Shelter and first aid. Shun wasn't completely unfamiliar with either. Granted, he never really built his own tent or anything like that before. It was usually just a matter of finding a place to sleep while out in the streets. As far as first aid went, he had a relatively basic idea of how to deal with minor injuries.

But first came first. The tent.

Shun glanced over at his partner with a furrowed brow. He had seen him around, but never really spoke with him prior. Then again, he didn't really make too much of an effort to talk to people in most situations. The young man just gave him a sort of curt nod, then looked over their supplies. One tarp, a bedroll, and some rope. They were going to need to get some things to support that, as well as a few other things, maybe. He didn't really have much of an idea on that, really, but he figured it shouldn't be too hard to manage.

"We'll probably need a few good sized sticks.."

Phillip followed along with the rest of the trainees, listening to his instructor. A smirk finding it's way to his lips as he was told that their training this week was to be shelter and first aid. Excitement grew in the auburn haired boy till the word 'partner.' He groaned and rolled his eyes, gathering his materials to make the shelter as he listened to the groups being called out. His ears perked only a little bit as he heard his name then the name following after it, Alec Scott. He sighed and rolled his eyes, continuing to get the shelter materials ready.

As he reached for the bedroll, Lip was interrupted by a hand in his face. He looked up to see a red haired fellow with goggles. His gaze narrowed on him then pushing his hand away, "I take it you are my pathetic partner... Do you even know how to build a shelter?.....or first aid? If not, you are completely useless to me." he practically growled as he stood up, looking down to the smaller male. "Heh, a bit puny aren't you?... I think even Chris is taller than you... Little tike." He mocked as he handed him some tool. "Go on, be useful." He smirked, not believing the other could do it.

"It doesn't count if it never leaves the ground!" Jeong and Larisa passed by, offering up a challenge to keep the tarp up longer and Hwan watched them trek out into the open grass. What could they possibly build out there? He was curious to see but had a suspicion that the poor blonde girl would end up drenched under whatever mad design his brother threw together. Granted, it wasn't like Hwan himself would perform much better but at least he wasn't going to get grass stains on top of wet clothes.

"Right, right. Back to work." Shakuntala had initially stayed quiet after his slight flirting but spoke up after a minute. Her shyly fumbled words were a cute reaction and Hwan watched her stiffly unfold and drop the tarp with an amused expression. He squatted down to gather it up again and straightened back up with it in his hands. He looked it over quizzically, wondered exactly what to use it for. It would work as a roof but only if they could figure out a way to hold it up. And the light-hearted carefree boy had no idea how to do that. He would have to work with sturdier less flexible materials like...

"I know! Get as many tall branches as you can and we'll make a hut." Through a mixture of further destroying the tree in front of them and scavenging from abandoned sticks on the ground from previous classes, the two of them finally had enough materials to get started. Planting them firmly into the ground in a circular arrangement, he tried to lean them all inwards towards the center to hold each other in place. An experienced survivalist could easily achieve this but a young man with no construction background found it incredibly difficult.

Thud. The first to fall bounced off his shoulder and rolled to the ground.

The third barely missed Shakuntala's feet.

"Dammit, this is harder than I'd thought." Military life in general had been more difficult than he'd envisioned but this was the latest in embarrassing failure. At least the horse had gone sort of well for him. Thinking back on it, she'd done rather well during that lesson, hadn't she? A normally quiet and mousy girl expertly commanding her house around, it had been kind of strange to see but not in a bad way. There had to be more to the story here. Why had someone like her joined something as aggressive and intense as the military? Hopefully he'd have a chance to ask sometime today. Hwan liked to poke into peoples' stories. They always had something interesting to hide, good or bad.

"The horses were easier, weren't they? You handled them pretty well. Did you ride before you joined the academy?" He continued to arrange his sticks as they talked, slowly but surely getting them to balance. They weren't the most reliable shelter but visually they passed. He hoped.

Sorry for late response! Meant to reply yesterday but I was exhausted. @A @ You are welcome to roll the 2d6 in your post if you want. Or if you want to prolong the shelter building, I can roll them in my next post as well! Also Hwan is trying to build a teepee of sorts if it wasn't clear.

Shakuntala swallowed thickly and nodded her head in relieved acquiesce. Good. They were getting back to work. No more dilly-dallying, no more exchanges with double meanings, actual work. While this satisfied her tenfold, at the same time, the copper-skinned girl felt herself a little too tense around her work partner. The rigidity in her posture gave way to slumped shoulders and a light exhalation as they returned to their duties. She returned Jeong-jae's nod with a dip of her own chin and a small smile; the little issue challenged and exchange between him and his twin definitely lifting her spirits a tad. By the looks of it, however, they were going to need more than luck to achieve anything remotely good enough to sleep under.

She too stared quizzically at the square of canvas in Hwan's outstretched hands trying to mentally construct a structure that hopefully wouldn't cave in on them after its completion. Unfortunately, she was drawing blanks, and was quick to shrug her shoulders. Thus, when Hwan issued the suggestion of collecting wood, she found it to be the best start to go with. Breaking from his company, Shakuntala trekked about the circle of area they had claimed as their campgrounds and stacked stick upon stick under the crook of her arm. After a moment's haste, she had collected an admirable amount and hefted them to the area that was signaled to be the dumping pile.

The trainee bounced out of the way as Hwan's structure collapsed in on itself like child's blocks. She scratched the back of her head in a chagrin as she knelt to pick up whatever sticks had rolled away and began again on the shelter Shakuntala thought Hwan had in mind. Between leaning sticks against one another, she bowed her head at his inquiry, and thought back to her time as a small girl under her parents' care. A nod followed soon after.

"Y-yes. My, um, m-my pappa taught me how to ride..." she replied. "He... H-he used to work horses to pull wagons a-and, um, I learned as a girl so I could h-help him out whenever." She did not admit her time with them was sometimes brief as most were slaughtered for meat. Had she more time with horses as she did now, she was positive she would've discovered her connection to them much earlier, but regretting what was in the past did not bring much joy in the present, so she believed.

Their exchange seemed to lessen Shakuntala's worry in regards to their shelter and as she admitted a bit about herself to her partner, her mind was essentially distracted as she leaned branches and sticks upon one another. She stopped prematurely and stepped back from their handiwork to assess the percentage done thus far. With a c**k of her head, she said, "L-looks like... it will remain standing?" She really hoped it would. "D-do you... want to try the water now?"

Alister happily collected the materials for making camp, thanking Everette with a huge grin. So, he was assigned with a Lillian Carter. It was a pretty enough name, he supposed.

"Hello, hello! I'm Alister. I'm sorry, I think I spaced pout during some of the lesson so we might have to do this quickly. Oh!" Alister looked at her, green eyes widening. "You're refreshingly tall, aren't you?" Sheepishly, he rubbed the back of his head with one hand, aware that he might be speaking a little too frankly for their very first interaction. Alister felt his face flush a little and was thankful that his dark skin usually masked the proof of his embarrassment. But, at 6'3", Alister simply towered over almost everyone. He used to to it, being called tree.... clumsy tree. It was refreshing that she was only about four inches shorter instead of a full foot. Plus, she had the most interesting eyes! Coughing, he looked over at a nearby tree.

"Why don't we tie the rope between two branches and weight the tarp with rocks on one end, while we can use these to hold the tarp attached to the tree! Like a weird L-shaped house! What do you think? It would make for a roomier tent than the standard v shape, I think." His melodious voice took on a quiet singsong quality as he spoke; it was obvious that Alister was naturally inclined to be musical even when not performing. He had rummaged around in his pocket while speaking and produced four sturdy-looking nails that he now waved at the blonde girl. These they could use to affix the tarp to the tree if Lillian said alright. Alister shifted from foot to foot and smiled expectantly at her.

"Oh, for ********' wall's sake, Axel!" With a disgusted sigh, she drove her branch further into the ground, dropped her rope, and hurried over. The cut was clean, the lines of it unjagged, although it bleed a lot. Preacher tugged the tarp out of his hands and tossed it down. They could pick it up later, but it was better off on the grassy ground for now, before he bloodstained it completely. Turning, she bent and grabbed the top of the first aid crate, wrenching it open. They were only supposed to treat fake wouds, but...

"Yer a ********' idiot, ya ken? I was talkin' bout Harper 'cause some people kin't see how good a girl she is. N' she deserves to be appreciated. She's m'friend. Now you... Axel why in all tha ********; walls d'ya keep a pocket-knife on ya iffin ya can't iuse it without cutting yerself?!" Preacher's words were harsh, but her hands were gentle as they cradled it to clean the cut. She'd see a man's arm get so infected once that he lost the whole limb. They weren't in the slums now, but the memory of it like a bad taste in her mouth. Carefully, she began to bandage it.

"Soon as I'm done dealin' witchur fool of a hand, we gotta tie tha rope on tha two sticks like a clothesline or summat." Tying off the bandage, she smacked him forcefully on his arm. "Ugh., there." Lately, Preacher had felt too tired to really start fights.

Axel bit his lip while Preacher bandaged up his hand. It was the only way to keep himself from shouting at her. He was frustrated with himself for being clumsy, and frustrated with her for picking on him about Harper. The thought of Harper made him queasy from a combination of stomach-turning guilt and a little rebellious flicker of well-maybe-I-should've. The absolute last person in the world who ought to be picking on him about Harper, he thought irritably, was the girl he rejected Harper for in the first place. Although apparently rejecting Harper had been a mistake and somehow offended Preacher. Walls, he couldn't do anything right.

"Thanks," Axel said grudgingly, pulling his bandaged hand back and stomping over to the sticks. It was easy enough to string the rope between the sticks, though his cut hand was stiff and ouchy and made tying knots a little more difficult than it usually was. Once they had the rope strung up, Axel picked up the blood-spattered canvas and tossed it over without waiting for further instruction.

The canvas flopped over the rope and hung there, sagging slightly in the middle, like an overly large bloody towel.

"Well, great. We made a damn tent," Axel said. "And stop talking about Harper."

Alec hadn't exactly expected to have his hand essentially smacked away, nor to be confronted with the other males passive aggressive dismissal of him. Whoever Phillip Prezlocki was, he certainly wasn't in the best of moods nor thrilled to be working with someone. The friendly teen merely blinked at the other, some of that smile wiped off his face as he frowned at the others commentary, especially on his height and being 'puny' and 'Little tike'. Neither were nicknames he was willing to acknowledge, he made a face at the older taller boy scoffing.

"No..I'm not really great with either honestly. I'm kind of out of my element." Alec answered, feeling the stress of the others words, not use to being referred to as 'useless' and all the more determined to prove the other wrong. Narrowing his eyes with a huff he snatched the tarp the other had offered him away, into his grasp. "I'm not THAT small you know." he mumbled, walking away from the other. He vaguely recognized the name Chris but the reference of his being short only earned the other a shrug. By comparison, he was several inches shorter but that didn't stop Alec from pouting at the others ego busting comments momentarily.

First and for most, he scouted out an area unclaimed. He was quick to drop the tarp for their claiming a spot for them before another pair did. Alec was quick to head back for some rope, and his sleeping bag dropping it before hoping up on his tip toes to try and toss the tarp over a series of branches that proved adequate...they would just need to tie the tarp down, and secure it against wind and "rain" as the simulation dictated. "Hey um. Can you grab that side so we can tie this down?" Alec shifted moving to left side jumping up to pull the tarp down after one or two tries he managed to succeed.

You wanna do the dice thing at the end?

Farvardin was glad to have passed the horse riding training. Sure the last horse she rode was good and seemed to like her but... she wasn't sure it would last. She stood at attention as she listened to their instructor. First aid and shelter! She knew both of those things!

She nodded when they were put into pairs although she didn't recognize her partner's name. She also wasn't too thrilled about their injury but she'd deal. She moved over to Shun and nodded back at him. She then took stock of their 'supplies' and sighed. Well at least they got a tarp and rope. She had to work with less before.

"Yeah we'll need some large sticks. Especially ones that still have branches on them. We can cut off or break off the branches and leave a little so it'll hold other sticks horizontally." She said taking charge of the shelter building, "Hm... I wonder if she'd let us use our blades to cut branches."

Spotting Jeong-jae waving her down as the others began to pair up and move out, Larisa smiled and moved forward to join him. His immediate snagging of her pigtail made her yelp and she quickly swatted his hand away as they started to walk along. It was just something she was going to have to get used to while she was friends with the twins, she was beginning to see, but she guessed it wasn't such a bad thing to have to get used to. It was a pretty small price to pay to actually have friends! Brightening with the thought and then laughing with extra delight as he thanked the instructor for pairing them up, she wrapped her arms around the tarp and followed.

"Oh, I um, I've never been camping either, not really. But I'm sure we can figure it out!" Like he said, it was just tying things to trees! Which made it all the more confusing when he led her away from the very lovely forest to a spot in the open field. It was almost like that night of Truth or Dare, when she'd thought Hwan was going to stay by the buildings but had run out in the open instead. Was this something they did on purpose? To confuse her? She turned puzzled eyes from the pile of supplies to the dirt he was digging into, then nodded hesitantly and knelt to help dig into the ground. She wished they'd been given a shovel.

"I've never...um. Never seen anyone dig a place for a tent before. How do we...? I mean, I'm sure it's a good idea! But I don't think I understand how we'll secure the tarp over it? Won't the rain just...seep in with us?" Glancing out at the other teams and their instructor, it was pretty clear no one else was trying this either. Was it really something people did for shelter? "N-not that I'm doubting you! I haven't been camping at all, so you're probably on to something and I've just never seen, but..." She faltered again, then let out a little sigh. "How deep should we dig, you think?"

Sure!

"Don't use your blades unless you have to. It'll end up dulling them," Shun noted, "Let's see what we can find first."

That said, he took in a breath and began to search for anything that might be suitable. It wasn't really easy spotting anything that seemed as though it'd work. He found a few long branches, but they were far too skinny and flimsy to be of any use. Others were just too small. He did have his knife as a back up, but it wouldn't really do much as far as hacking away at wood went.

Eventually, he did find one sturdy stick. Maybe it'd work. They were going to need more, but it was a start in the very lease.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 17, 2014 9:51 pm

"Helping your dad out? That's pretty cool. Oh, yeah, water! Let's do it." A twinge of guilt passed through him as he realized he'd caused trouble for his dad more than he'd ever really helped him around town. Still, their father had seemed to enjoy the shenanigans (more so than their mother) and he could only hope that his old man was looking down at him with pride now for finally doing something responsible with his life.

He nodded in response to her story as well as her question. Shakuntala stammered whenever she talked to him and he wondered if he was making her nervous. Despite whatever was going on internally, she continued to help stack the branches together and he reached for the rope to hold the top together. Looping around where all the ends met, it seemed to hold together well enough. The shelter wouldn't be able to withstand a windstorm or anything but for their first try, Hwan thought they had done pretty well.

"Wait, let's set it up proper-like." It would be half assed not to set up the entire campsite, right? Extra unused wood was arranged as if to start a fire and he shoved the mound of pine needles he'd collected inside their hut. Smoothing out the bedroll on the ground to check the length, Hwan decided it'd fit and squeezed it inside their bundle of sticks. She watched him nervously and he grinned at her shyness over his shoulder. The way she tried so hard at things despite obvious discomfort was kind of cool and he motioned her closer towards him as he turned to face her. Sitting on the mat, it didn't feel as comfy as a normal bed but it would do.

"C'mon, I know it's tight but you can sit on me~" His voice was warm and playful as he grabbed at her wrist and tried to drag her in as well. There was barely enough room for them both and he laughed as their bodies crashed together with her likely attempts to get away. Now that the hard work was done, it was time to play a little, right?

"Teacher, we're ready!" He called out loudly, cupping a hand by his mouth to direct the sound. The other hand firmly held the adorable Shakuntala in place near him. It was only after Ervette arrived that he realized the one flaw in their grand plan.

He'd been so busy checking out Tala he'd forgotten to wrap the tarp around. They were gonna get drenched.

NaomiNaomi
Oh man, they got a 1 for waterproofed?! XD I hope it's not too godmoddy to drag her in on top of him but I left it open for her to pull away if you want.

The Semblance of Unity

First Aid and Survival? Lillian had read a few books on it in the past, but was never really forced to "rough it." It didn't take long for her to find her partner, he seemed to cover that for her and quite cheerfully it seemed.

"Hm? Spaced out? That doesn't bode well, but we'll manage. I'm Lillian, it's nice to meet you." She eyed the materials, and pondered what would make a good shelter, half noticing the other blush. Was she being flirted with? She was the most anti-social person likely in this course, and was not one to assume. "I'm taller than some, yes..." Awkwardly she shoved her hands in her pockets, not quite sure what to do with them. She glanced back at him, watching him pull the items form his pockets. She wouldn't admit it, but it was actually refreshing to have someone so cheerful to work with.

Lillian isn't one to stray far from plans. A shelter should be of working stature though, and while part of her brain screamed that they should not stray off of a standard V-shaped shelter, she tried to consider the merits of his proposed L-shaped one. More room would be nice. It would be less awkward for them both to fit under it, and would allow more space for their supplies. "If.. you think an L-shape would work, then trying can't hurt." She nodded at him, walking forward to start helping him move the tarp. "I admit though, you likely know more about setting this up than I will, so lead the way."
