Near was smarter but Mello was willing to to whatever was necessary to get his way. So Mello and Near turned out to both be successful but Mello rushed head into things without thinking carefully. Near was able to calmly analyze the situation without getting his emotions involved so he got further.

Jade the Hatless I'd say they were on the same level of cleverness except in different ways. Really, even though (SPOILER!!!!!) Mello lost, Near would have lost too if it wasn't for Mello doing what he did. (END SPOILER!!!) SPOILERS Mello didn't lose, he did what was necessary to save 7 other people's lives. He thought ahead, and HE was the reason the first, fourth and I guess you could call Takada the fifth Kira were caught.Near was more clever, but Mello was a more useful succesor of L.

I would have to say that although their intelligence in nearly equal, Near is better than Mello... Mello thinks too much with his emotions unlike Near and considering Mello ended up dead I would also have to say Near is superior...

Okay, people are saying because Near lives, he's more clever. Guess what? Aizawa lives. Gevanni survives. Sayu lives. I say that if Mello and Near got together for real, they would be unstopable.
Mello takes action, trust his instincts, gets the job done, even if he does tend to let his emotions get in the way, which unless youre Near, we all do for the most part.
Near on the other hand, shows no emotion, uses his head and sloves thing, as Mello said, like hes doing a puzzle.
If Near were to solve the case while Mello were to do all the a** kicking, they would be a force to be reckoned with. I certainly wouldnt want to be the kira theyre after.
I am partial to Mello though...and its quite obvious. Mello is my favourite character in the entire series besides L.
But thats just what I think sweatdrop

I think they're both equally clever.
It's just Near uses his logically why Mello uses his based on emotions.

hmmm...Near or Mello? I think that they are about the same on a level of intelligence but in the end Near thinks his ideas out which allows him to win

I have to say that Near was ..smarter.True that Mello took action but Mello is using force.Near using technique.Technique defeats force in a long run.So in conclusion,Near is smarter than Mello.

well i would have to say Near but as Near said "near and mello aren't as smart as L and well L wasn't as smart as Kira" so Light would be the most clever but i liked L and Near out of the three going for Kira but i also like Lights character because that is what power would do to someone who was essentially good
