"Cleverer" isn't a word. :/
Near and Mello, I'd say, are both on equal levels. Their ways of accomplishing obstacles are pretty different, but overall, they both end up getting the job done.
God, my post is lame. D:

Oh, that's a hard one. I don't really know...
It seems to me, Mello and Near are the perfect team. Near figures everything out, while Mello takes action.
I would have to say I think Near is more clever.
Of course, that may be quite biased. I don't like Mello too much.

Who is more clever?
That's pretty tough but I'll have to say Near. But it really is hard to tell because the two of them are so different. Near is clever because of what he says but Mello is clever because of the actions he takes. But overall I'm going to have to say Near because he was #1 and it was his logic that helped get Kira (but then again, it wouldn't have happened without Mello...).
Alright, no more going into detail. I love Mello to bits but I'm going to have to say Near. 3nodding

I'd say they were on the same level of cleverness except in different ways. Really, even though (SPOILER!!!!!) Mello lost, Near would have lost too if it wasn't for Mello doing what he did. (END SPOILER!!!)

Near. For previously stated reasons.
Mello was kind of rash about everything.

"cleverer"?? Well I think that Mello is more imaginative that Near because he is more willing to take a risk. I think that Near would not be able to do some of the things he did if it wasn't for SPOILER!! people like Mello that are willing to risk everything where he isn't. So, I think Mello is more clever n_n

It depends. Near is more the brain while Mello's more the body. One thinks, one takes action, together they create "The worlds tallest detective!!" sorry, Scrubs crack
I would say Mello's more clever though, because I like Mellon-kun. (I'm being biased too -_- wink

Near. Anyone who can accomplish more success without using violence is more clever in my book. Also, despite any expectancies, Near still has in an infinite amount of back up plans.
And I just don't like Mello. He frightens me. Sorry guys sweatdrop

Music -Epik HighI would probably say Near. Mello takes action before he should go over the plans. I might seem a bit biased though, 'cause I don't really like Mello :B 23.1k / 43.9k [ ] &it's so so real,

It was kind of established that Near was the cleverer* one. But Mello got a lot accomplished - his method was just more ruthless and impatient, while Near planned ahead. So I think they were equally intelligent, but Near's personality allowed im to demonstrate it better. Spoilerish: I think in the end they had been with each other so much that Mello could think like Near if he wanted to, but it wasn't his personality. (*it's in the dictionary, peeps).

they're basically equal, but the mangas state that Near was always #1 and Mello was always #2, so i would have to say Near is smarter....but Mello is NOT dumb! he figured out Light and Near's plans and helped Near before he died, so they do make the PERFECT team. Near: Together, we can stand with L. Together, we can surpass L. (yes, i know, im a TOTAL Deathnote junkie, geek, whatever you want to call it....how about way too obsessed?)
