JULY.O4.2OO7 Dear Diary...
• • • • •

Happy Independence Day~ Though, where I am now, they don't celebrate July 4th as anything special. Heh. I wish I was with Dad and Jin now. He'd be sure to do something fun, like watch a movie that just came out in the morning and have breakfast at IHOP. Then we would play in the backyard while dad started up the grill. The gate that Al and insisted on having installed in the fence would be left wide open until early in the morning because we would be too busy sharing food and fireworks.

Heck, even in Cali I had some fun. Jouji would always invite me over for festivities. But this fourth of July, no fireworks for me. Instead, I get something else.

Mr. Shirakawa (it's awkward to call him "step-father" or "step-dad"... And calling him by his first name is totally totally out of the question) and his mother had a debate as to which school I should attend. I don't understand why his mother thinks being surrounded by girls would turn me into a "proper lady" but Mr. Shirakawa was able to persuade her to let me go to the school all of his family members went to: Ouran Private Academy. It's co-ed, but consists of mostly rich kids (some scholarship students are selected every year, I hear).

Up until now, I've been home-school due to this conflict. The right high school is just as important as the right college, it seems here. I just wish they figured it out earlier because I missed almost half of the year already. Oh well, I've been missing some peer interaction. I just hope rich kids aren't all like... well, my step-cousin.

I've been admissioned into the High School division as of next week. Tomorrow though, I'll be able to meet the headmaster and roam around the school a bit. That'll be fun. Well, I guess I better end it here. Breakfast is almost ready.

JULY.13.2OO7 Work or Play? (Missing You)
• • • • •

"It's only been one week and I already have so much work!" Sai groaned as she opened the door to her room. Her bag was cramped with new books and in her hands were even more books. Dropping everything on the couch, she kicked off her shoes, let down her hair and went to freshen up in her bathroom. 'Thank goodness it's Friday. Maybe I can go surfing or biking tomorrow before starting on this...' As she thought about her future plans she slipped out of her yellow dress and into something blue. 'Or maybe I should start on some of it tonight... Better turn on the computer.

The schoolwork she had wasn't anything too hard from what she skimmed through. It was just time-consuming: a twenty page report here, a book assignment there, and then there was her own independent study on law that she had to catch up on. With much effort and concentration, Sai was the top attorney in the National Mock Trial competition in her freshman year in Cali, but she wasn't familiar with the laws in Japan. It was like starting all over from scratch. She thought that if she could understand how law works here and found a way to show off her skills in front of her step-father, maybe he would be able to convince her grandmother that she really is bright and gifted. Sure, her plan was very vague and sketchy, but it was a start. When she really thought about it, she shouldn't go out tomorrow. Time would be better spent inside, studying... no matter how much she missed the beach.

Once she was done, Sai plopped down in her computer chair and started it up. Balancing her chin on one fist while checking her e-mail with the other, she realized that someone she hadn't talked to for a while happened to sign in.

oneSAIoftwo:  Wow, Hawaii! How was the surf? What did you get to do?
1chi(ban)Jouji: D00D. It was water HEAVEN. & we got to do a lot of stuff. We went 2 a luau (the food was interesting) & went hiking. Man, most of the locals are sooo friendly. We met a few of them when we set up camp and one taught me how to play slack key guitar. :3
oneSAIoftwo: o.o Sounds like you had a great time! What's slack key guitar?
1chi(ban)Jouji: turn on your webcam & i'll show you
oneSAIoftwo: Ok.

Switching to webcam mode...

Successful.

"Woah, I LOOOOOVE your hair! Light blue~" Sai laughed and formed a heart with her fingers. He changed quite a bit from how he looked before. His moptop of blonde hair was cut short and spiked. Not to mention, it was dyed a vibrant, sky blue: her favorite color. In his form-fitting v-neck shirt, he obviously had been working out and for some reason... he looked cuter than she remembered.

Jouji grinned, taking his acoustic guitar into his hands. "Haha. I thought you'd love it. The con's coming up this weekend."

"Let me guess... you're cosplaying George from ParaKiss."

"Yup. Think I can pull it off?" He raised his arm to grab something above the webcam; Jouji took a vintage-looking hat and posed. Sai couldn't help but crack up.

"I think George is sliiiiiightly hotter. I'm sorry," she teased.

Jouji shook his head and mumbled a "whatever." Although he was pouting, attempting to gain some sympathy, both of them knew they were joking around. "Anyway, here it is."

"Say, isn't that just a regular acoustic guitar?"

"Wrong." Jouji grinned. It was rare for him to ever tell her that, and the feeling was wonderful. With one strum of the strings, Sai knew what was different. "The tuning's different." And with that, he began to play a song.

Sai was left breathless. It was a laid-back and calming melody that lulled her into a paradise. Through lowered eyelids, she watched his fingerings and strumming. I just got to learn how to play this.

Soon after the song came to an end, the sound of a one-man applause sounded like a big audience to him. Jouji smiled at her and took in her image. Somehow she looked more refined, in her expensive blue halter top draped in silk. It was hard to believe this girl was the same person that beat him in a surfing contest--twice. But it was the way her eyes sparkled that made Jouji sure that it really was her.

"That was wonderful!" Sai exclaimed. "You got to teach me how to play."

"Sure, of course. But I'm not really good enough yet to teach anyone." Jouji began to blush. "I only learned the basics and a couple of songs. Perhaps I'll teach you after you get your package."

Her brow furrowed. "Package? ... If I had a package it would be on my..." Sai looked over to the left at her bed. On it was a brown parcel taped up with stamps and his familiar chickenscratch adorn on one side of it. "Oh! Hold on."

Sai picked up the box from her bed and set it on her lap once she sat back down. With a pocketknife in hand, she cut the box open and shoved the bubblewrap out of the way so she could pull out a black, trapezoid-shaped case. "What's this?"

"Open it."

Click. The latches flipped up. Inside, surrounded by royal blue velvet was a beautiful tenor ukelele made of real, solid koa wood. Sai's eyes widened to the size of saucers. Slowly, a deranged and unbelievable laugh escaped her lips, crescendoing with every second. "NO. WAY!" she managed in between her giggles. "THIS MUST'VE COST OVER 300 BUCKS! HOW DID YOU AFFORD IT?!"

Jouji smirked, not knowing whether to be mad or insulted. "What, Ms. Snooty Rich Girl? Commoners can afford nice stuff too! I took up a part-time job and saved up so that I could get you something, and that's the thanks I get?"

"No, I don't mean that! Why would you get me such an expensive a souvenir with your hard earn cash?" Sai took the ukelele out of the case and began to check if it was in tune.

After singing "my dog has FLEAS!" for her to the picked strings, The blue-haired boy just shrugged in reply to her smile. "Don't worry, I got myself some stuff too. It's just that I saw it and thought you might like to play around with it. You taught yourself the guitar, so I'm sure you could figure this one out in no time. I'm always thinking about you, you know."

The girl's brow furrowed. "Really?"

"Yeah. Like I said, I really miss you."

An awkward silence then took over the conversation. Sai didn't really know what to make of it--what he was saying. Nervous, he decided to say somethin else. "I mean, you know... Some of the school subjects were really kicking my butt this year and you always help me out when it came to studying, and there's no real competition anymore when it comes to surfing..."

"I miss you too, Jouji."
"Huh?"
"I don't have anyone here to nag or compete with here," she told him quietly. "To be honest, it's quite awkward to try and be myself. I've met some people, and they're really nice, but... well." Sai wasn't really sure what was wrong. "I feel like I have to act a certain way that just isn't myself. And..."

Jouji waited. "Yes?"

"Well, it's just... I miss you. And Al, and my brother... I kind of miss being able to be a 'commoner'. I miss being around you and them."

"Oh." The disappointed way he said that and cast his eyes to the side made Sai skeptical. What did he think she was going to say? "Well, I'm sure it'll take some time for you to make some new friends. Just don't worry about it." He glanced back up to her with a small smile. "Your one tough girl, Sai. I don't think I've ever met anyone like ya."
"Thanks."

Suddenly the sound of a knock on a door came through the speakers. "George! Go to bed! It's already MIDNIGHT!"
"OK! OK! I'LL GET OFF NOW!" Jouji yelled back to his mother. He looked back at the computer screen, sighing. "I guess I'll try to catch you online another time, then."

"Alright, then. Sleep well, okay?"
"Sure. See ya."
"Bye."
"Oh, and Sai?"
"Yes?"
"I..." Jouji hesitated for a moment. He wasn't looking at her.
"What is it?"
"Um... nothing." Jouji shook his head and smiled back at her. "You might want to check one of the pockets of the ukelele case."
Sai was skeptical, but nodded. "Alright."
"Take care."
"You too."

And with that, his face disappeared from the screen and a notice popped up:

JOL INSTANT MESSENGER
1chi(ban)Jouji has signed off.

After he signed off, Sai did as she was told. "Jouji," she breathed, shaking her head. It was a mix of different songs he chose off some of the Hawaiian CDs he picked up, apparently. From the ukelele stylings of "the Jimi Hendrix of the Uke", Jake Shimabukuro, to the grammy-award winning slack key guitar artists, to the soothing voices of Na Leo, it was the sounds of Hawaii jammed onto one disc. She smiled as she took the CD in its slim jewel case into her hands, opened it, and popped it into the stereo system next to the computer.

Then she looked around.

"Well, I'm back to being by myself." Sai put the box and case on the floor by the computer and sat on her bed. She never noticed it there, but a thick leather-bound book was on it. It was a law book she requested to borrow days ago.

But she didn't feel like reading it now.

'It's the weekend after all,' she comforted herself as she laid back on the cloud-like comforter and plush pillows. As much as she wanted to get a head start on her work and ultimately, her mission, Sai just strummed the strings of her new ukelele along to "Dragon", imagining paradise, until she fell asleep.

Maybe getting some fresh air tomorrow wouldn't be such a bad idea after all.
