His sand is normal sand. It's his sand though. The whole, fused with blood, and mixed with blood part is just that he's killed people with it. It's not like he went through some ritual to make the sand and blood become one.
I don't remember reading that his chakra is FUSED with the sand, only that he controls the sand with his own chakra.

SHUKAKU DOES NOT GIVE HIM THE POWER TO CONTROL SAND.

Shukaku is the reason that the sand automatically protects him.
(Note: In the manga, Kankuro explains that the sand protects him against his will... as if it was alive.)

Gaara's sand is NOT alive. It has no spirit. It's just sand.

READ. in the MANGA. in the anime, it specifically says that sand is infused with his chakra.

I haven't read the Part 2 manga, but I've been watching the eps. as they come out, and I've read spoilers, so I know about the whole

Shukaku being removed and all. But I was wondering in anyone knows,

does the sand still protect him automatically after Akatsuki removes Shukaku?

There isn't a definite answer for that yet, as we haven't seen how Gaara was affected, other than the fact that he can still manipulate sand. However, I would think the answer is no.

The way I interpret it is that the sand automatically protected Gaara because Shukaku was the one controlling it in those moments. Afterall, if Gaara dies so does Shukaku. Thus, for his own preservation he had to make sure Gaara stayed alive. But, now that Shukaku is gone, I would assume that Gaara no longer has that automatic defense.

It also says in one episode

that the sand is made o his mother's will

and that's why it protects him.

True but didn't it say some where that he infuses his chakra into the sand to manipulate into certain types of shields or something?
