Gaara's sand is just sand right? There's nothing special to it?

I'd think chakra would be in it...how else would it move without Gaara touching it? Not that you see it.
And it probably smells like blood from all the people he's killed.

It's more than just normal sand. It has chakara and the blood of people he killed fused with it.
He can manipulate normal sand but the sand in his gourd is more powerful and can crush people better.

Its just sand.He can just munipulate it with his chakra,I dont think his sand is really that different.Exect that its Kinda alive and has peoples blood in it....

Its sand with blood mixed. He uses his chakra to manipulate it. He can manipulate any sand but he perfers that sand.
There's more than chakra and blood in the sand, people! There's the love of all Gaara's fangirls/guys at his control....Mwahaha!

It's sand from the Sand Village, he's able to control it because the of the sand demon, Shukaku being inside him,
I don't know how he's still able to control the sand after Shukaku, the sand demon was taken out of him though...

I think in addition to the blood and chakra there was a last wish from his mother that made the sand protect him. Not entirely sure on this but I think it was because she hated the village and wanted him to live because of that.

Well, the sand he has is definitely different, because he keeps it with him in his gourd all the time. It's literally infused with him [aka, his chakra]. As for the sand constantly protecting him thing, it's because of Shukaku. He won't let him kill himself, because he needs Gaara as his host, otherwise HE goes...At least that's how it looks,neh? 3nodding

The sand is just normal sand from Suna...
and even with Shukaku out of his body, he can still use it...

His sand is normal sand. It's his sand though. The whole, fused with blood, and mixed with blood part is just that he's killed people with it. It's not like he went through some ritual to make the sand and blood become one. I don't remember reading that his chakra is FUSED with the sand, only that he controls the sand with his own chakra.
SHUKAKU DOES NOT GIVE HIM THE POWER TO CONTROL SAND.
Shukaku is the reason that the sand automatically protects him. (Note: In the manga, Kankuro explains that the sand protects him against his will... as if it was alive.)
Gaara's sand is NOT alive. It has no spirit. It's just sand.

its just regular old sand that he uses. he CAN use other sand but he likes to use the sand in the gourd the best....

Gaara is able to use any sort of sand available, but the sand in the gourd is special in a sense. It was originally just regular sand, but, aside from the whole blood thing, it's a set amount specially containing a lot of old chakra. This gives it more power and speed, making it more beneficial for defensive and offensive purposes. It states so both in the manga and anime during Gaara's fight against Deidara.
