iolitefire Joshua_Ritter iolitefire Laren I've shared this with Yvaine, but I figure I'll post for the benefit of all. Many esoteric circles stand by hiding names, as names have power, and you should NEVER give a person your True Name. Also, in many angelic and satanic summoning spells, you must know the True Name of the entity you are attempting to call. Hiding your true name is understandable. More people do that than someone would think. It's giving yourself an uber pretentious name that annoys the hell out of me. Hey, I like pretentiousness. But use other languages so people don't know. Ritter, my last name on here? It's a german noble title meaning Knight. I use cool stuff in latin like Lux Imperator and Fiat Umbra to be pretentious but have it cool sounding as well.To me, the more pretentious the name, the smaller the p***s. Or the brain. Or both. razz German names are fine since thats the culture of those parts of Europe. Giving yourself names like "LightFlash FyreBalm TigerEyes" just makes me think your trying to compensate for something razz No, that would be "Fast Car Cylindered BulgyPants."

I recall speaking to a female friend of mine, who had a crush on me. She brought up the point that men who drive fast cars are compensating. I pointed out that at the time, I rode the bus. She laughed nervously...

Actually, I lied. Here's where I get extra-curious. I *have* heard people talking about ways to "discover your true name". I gotta say, I always figured your true name was the one you grew up with. Explanation, anyone? Scoffing? Apology for unnecessary rituals?

To your second question: I've heard of it, and my boyfriend wants to do it. He wants to because, while it might be true you grew up with you "true" name, he grew up with two.
He's Japanese and imagrated at 8. Then they changed his name to Ether. While that's an... odd name, he believes Ether is the name that brings him closer to "the higher being". He's now 14, and lived 6 years with his now name. But what about the name of the first 8 years of his life? Was he supposed to forget it?
So now he wants his "true" name. While he does believe it's Ether, he's willing for another idea. Um, he wants to do a ritual that's supposed to help. But it's kinda like starving yourself for a month and pushing your mental bounaries to the limit while looking for your "name".
So he might just stick with Ether....
To your first queston: I use one, sometimes... It's Cullen. Yeah, I know it's a boys name. Deal. I use it because met Christains. Now, even if I know the other person is pagan, I'm skittish to say that I am too. So now I use a "Craft name".

Well, when I think about true names, and the conflicting statements that names are just words and useless sounds like the rest of them, and the antithesis the true names give power over an individual, I must conclude that a "true" name is one which is not just noise, but in some way completely and truely represents the entirety of the person it is attached to, and in this way knowing their name might allow you to know all about them. Self knowledge of this name might give you similar power to improve yourself.

Going with Josh's post for a moment, while storking my ego, I will choose to remind people that my name is Michael. Michael means "one who is like God," and so when speaking to me you may consider yourself talking to a mortal-god figure.
In order to know me, you must do advanced theological research! Or you may choose to believe that someone that I am very much like (maybe even look like) died for your sins. Your choice.

I like that best.

So Josh, you seem to be advocating learning what name truly defines you through deep meditation or some personally significant ritual, ja? I mean, rituals are often very strict, but I'm gathering that unless it means something to you at your core level it won't help you much on the true-name front.
Khalida - you know, you could also be Mikey, who likes Life cereal...

Real honest Wicca? It is an extremely wise suggestion to take. For the Wicca I think you're talking about, it's not a requirement at all, in fact there are no real requirements for dedicant Wicca. Edit: If you were into real (initiatory) Wicca, your mentor/teacher/master would guide you on such topics.

Actually, if you would please post a bit (or start a new thread) explaining some of the differences. It would probably be of interest to many here.

That...that's just super.
Aren't magickal names supposedly a powerful thing? In which case I'm not actually sure why anyone would post theirs. Defeats the purpose of having the extra name, to my mind.
