She only does that when Inuyasha does something extremely wrong. It's sorta like training a dog, they have to learn what's wrong and what's right.
Not really. She does it when he's about to act rashly. Or when he's being an insensitive clod, which is part of what makes Inuyasha who he is. Or she does it when he just catches her in a bad mood. Punishment and reward might work for dogs, but she doesn't reward him, and inuyasha is at least 50% human. We try to teach morality and proper conduct to fellow sentient beings with our words, unless they're actively threatening our lives.
