I am one of three marching trombones at my school. We only have two french horns, both of which are in symphonic band, and four marching baritones. We have one bass clarinet player, but he doesn't even march! To tell you the truth, this is the first year that I remember that we had baritones!!! We also don't have any tenor saxes, and only one bari sax, and hes only in jazz band!

Our band needs so lower brass instruments badly We have 3 trombones, 2 of which are graduating, 2 french horns, one bari sax, also graduating, 1 tuba, 3 tenor saxes, 1 graduating, and 1 baritone horn. We have more clarinets than the whole lower brass combined! (Not that I really mind, I love my clarinet, but our band director won't shut up about it. also, we have bass clarinet players, but they march clarinet and not bass. Sad part is, clarinet section is actually going to be dwindling next year, because we have 14 right now, 6 are graduating, 1 is quitting band, another might, 1 is switching to tenor sax, and another might do trumpet. There will be 4 clarinets, not counting the freshmen gonk ! It's not fair!! Plus, I'll probably be section leader next year, and I won't have very many people to help me, because it will only be 2 juniors(I'm a sophmore right now), and 2 sophmores, and then I don't know how many freshmen. It makes me very sad. crying

My grade has 6 trombones, which is the biggest miracle the band has ever seen! We usually only have 1 or 2 trombones, but my grade has a good selection of instruments. We have: 1. 6 trombones 2. 1 baritone 3. 1 bari sax 4. 1 tuba It may seem like not that much, but to my band teacher next year, it is great.

Hyo_Aoki Woah...i didnt even look at your poll before i posted...0_0; ...freaky... Who marches with French Horn? My school usuall gets them to convert to Baritone...xD oh gosh....in our school it's the baritones who are endangered, meaning in our marching band of 160 kids next year i POSSIBLY will be the only one.... gonk so anyone with the slightest interest of converting to baritone is switched over

I'm proud to say that my school doesn't have any instruments dying out- our population exploded this year. We have forty some-odd trumpets, thirty six alto saxes, twelve tenors, nine souzaphones (sp?), fifty flutes (insane!), 10 mellophones, twenty-five trombones, forty-five clarinets, two bari saxes...in marching band. A lot of them also play in concert band, and including them, there are four bassoons, five oboes, and five bass clarinets. I guess it's actualy my instrument, teh bassoon, that's dying out, if anything!

My Band Director doesn't even march Trombones, the only guy who does play one switches to Baritone during marching season. But overall, I'd say Trombones are much more common than Baritones or Euphoniums.

Flosty Gritter So yesterday I went to a band competition to see my soon to be school's band play. While I was there I noticed that out of 11 bands only 5 even had trombones. And to make matters worse the band that got 1st in Kingston's (my soon to be school) division was huge and didn't have ANY. are there any other endangered instruments out there?? ive noticed that alot of marching bands are taking out trombones and putting in the evil of marching tromboned (looks like an inverted baritone)

I'd say the endangered instruments in our band have to be French Horns/ Mellophones. Last year we only had two, and this year we have two graduating of the five we now have (one of which is switching to trombone, and one of which has only been playing for two months and is quitting to do track). However we are getting two freshman next year so we'll still be alive. x3
Next year we will only have two baritones of the five we use to have because we have no incoming freshman playing baritone, and only one in concert band that isn't in marching band.
We have like 8 or 9 bass clarinets and 6 or 7 bari saxes, so I don't know WHAT's going on in your guys' band, or maybe if we're just special (we also have 3 Bassoons in concert band, a Contrabass Clarinet, and 5 Sousaphones/Tubas with one coming in, so maybe our band just attracts low instruments.) Just for reference I'd like to throw in that we're a 5A band, so this is like... a lot for us because of recent history. ._.;;
As for the main topic...on trombones...we have A CRAPLOAD compared to most of the bands I've seen. Right now we have 6 marching, two incoming, and three more who weren't in marching band because of football/ were playing Sousaphone while marching.
But the instrument that's just flatout dissappearing in our band is my BELOVED ALTOS. 2 seniors graduate this year, but next year 9 JUNIORS are leaving of the 13. That leaves 3 of us if no freshman join. Since when are alto sections allowed to be that small? D:
...anyway I've rambled long enough. x3 -runs away-
