Every time I think I can't top my previous adoption of a child, I surprise myself again. Look at me; I'm adopting a robot child this time! Well, I think it's a robot child anyway. Apparently her name is Eowyn, and right now she is just a chip. The doctor sort of indirectly hinted that she can hear me, though, so I've talked to her a bit. I introduced her to the family, and everyone seemed pretty delighted. I'm not sure why. Most of the family flipped out when they heard I was going to have another baby, but somehow a robot child is okay.

At least the family is happy this time; for that I am grateful.

I spent some time with the chip this evening, just wondering aloud, talking about my family. Maybe the chip can hear me. I talked about how Kayce and Tanith don't get along, but how they both absolutely dote on their equine companions. I talked about how Aiodhan and I met, and how we have two biological children, in addition to all the rest of the kids. After about an hour of thinking aloud to it (and feeding Yana), I had to get up and make dinner. Thus far, the chip has stayed safe. Even Erin seems to be aware that she can't touch it. It's probably the one thing in the house she leaves alone.

I hear crying upstairs, which means Erin is likely awake. I'd better go put her back down to sleep.

A Sisterly Discussion

In a household like the Raikes-Layden's, it was very easy for things to go missing. Books often disappeared from somewhere and turned up a week later, shoved between couch cushions. Toys were often recovered from strange places like behind the toilet, or sometimes, they weren't found at all. This was normal. Things just got lost, no matter how organized the house was... at times.

Sometimes, though, the things went missing deliberately. Amyla had placed Eowyn the chip on a shelf in the bookcase in her room, trying to keep the chip somewhere safe while she gave Caleb, Aryana, and then Erin their baths, none of which were easy (or mess-free) tasks. What she had not realized, though, was that Kayce had been keeping a cautious eye on her and the chip, just waiting for Eowyn to be put down somewhere so she could take the opportunity to investigate.

And Kayce realized that her time had come.

She had been curious ever since her mother had brought the chip home. Mum had mentioned something about the name 'Eowyn' being a character from a book. Kayce, out of curiosity, had read the Lord of the Rings trilogy and promptly decided that her sibling-to-be Eowyn was anything like the book-character Eowyn, they would be good friends. Imagine... a sister willing to swordfight, another being (even if it was a robot) who understood what it was like to show an icy face to the world! All right, so Kayce's ice-hearted nature was natural, but then, maybe Eowyn's was too. Who knew?! All she knew was that this sibling promised to be splendid, much better than any other she had.

That was why she was waiting for her mother to set the chip down somewhere. She intended to go pay the chip a little visit.

It took her all of five seconds to climb up the bookcase shelves and pluck Eowyn off. Carefully climbing back down, she slid smoothly down the hall and into her room, shutting and locking the door behind her. The chip felt rather cold in her hand, and she stared at it as she sat on her bed, crossing her legs one over the other to sit Indian-style. Mum had mentioned that the chip was aware, even if it couldn't talk. Very well. She intended to have a good chat with the chip.

"Mum says your name is Eowyn, like the character from the books. You liked to ride horses and fight with swords, but you were beautiful. You were of noble blood," the fae said, cradling the chip carefully in the palms of her hands and speaking quietly right to it. "I think you can hear me now. Even if you can't, maybe it will be stored somewhere in the back of your memory. We are alike, you and I. I can not wait to introduce you to Missy. You will love her; she is a beautiful horse. I love to fight with short swords. We can spar together."

Most other creatures would have felt foolish talking to an obviously inanimate chip, but for Kayce, it was as though she was conversing with another part of herself. Finally, she could have a kindred spirit, one who would understand that she didn't want casual affection. She wanted someone to think and practice with.

"I hope we can meet face-to-face soon," she added before taking a quick glance at the clock. She had time until the baths were done. She could talk to her sister awhile longer.

I nearly had a heart attack the other day. I went to give the babies their baths, and when I came back, the chip was gone. I panicked and looked all over the house for nearly two hours, but I was sure I left it on the bookcase. In the end, when I came back up to my room, there it was, sitting right on the bookcase where I left it. But it hadn't been there before when I had looked. I don't understand it. How did it disappear and then reappear? It isn't as though it has legs, that it could have walked up and moved itself!

I know Aiodhan didn't move it. He was helping me bathe Caleb, Yana, and Erin, which means the three babies couldn't have taken it. Kari and Nieva were downstairs, and Evie was with them. That leaves Tanith and Kayce. Tanith wouldn't take it, and she was downstairs in the family room reading her book at the time. Kayce doesn't care enough about anything to take it, so it couldn't have been her either. Which leaves me with.... nobody. That, or my mind is completely gone, and it could have been there the whole time while I missed it.

Who knows? It is safe, and it suffered no harm. Not even a minor dent or scratch. Therefore, I'm not going to fret about it too much. I'll just hope that it was an isolated incident that will never repeat again.

Girl Talk

"Won't Mum be mad at us?" Eowyn inquired, sitting cross-legged on Kayce's bed and staring at her sister. At Kayce's compliance, it was decided that Eowyn and Kayce would share a room. There were now two beds in the room, and the room was neatly divided in half. Not that it mattered. Neither sister seemed to mind the other's presence in close proximity. Even their decorative tastes were similar, though Kayce preferred the darker colors while Eowyn seemed to enjoy the earthy tones.

Kayce shook her head at the kybernetik's query before picking up a peach-quarter to eat. "As long as don't make a mess or attract insects, she doesn't mind," the fae said with careful precision.

That seemed to satisfy Eowyn, for she too picked up a piece of peach and began to eat. How good the fruit tasted! She indulged in a satisfied smirk before returning her attention to her elder sister. "Are we going to practice again tomorrow?"

It wasn't a question that really needed answering, for both girls knew that on the morrow, they would be outside and practicing again. Kayce, being much older and having far more practice, was obviously superior for the timebeing. Eowyn, though, was nearly Kayce's match as far as dexterity, and her reflexes could have been a smidgeon better. Either way, the match was a bit lopsided for now, but both knew it wouldn't be long before they were evenly-matched sparring partners.

"Yes. Riding, as well," Kayce added, though that was becoming a given. Eowyn was living up to her characteristic namesake. "Do you like living here?"

Eowyn blinked in surprise. Why wouldn't she like it? Of course, the two-- no, three-- infants were rather loud, Erin was a royal pain, and Tanith was vicious in nature. But it wasn't a bad place. She liked Mum and Dad well enough, and she even tolerated Kari. Kayce was her favorite, though. Not many families let sisters practice real swordfighting with each other. No, not many at all. She very much liked this place. "I like it," she said simply.

That seemed to satisfy Kayce for the moment, for the fae inclined her head, and then both girls went back to eating from their bowl of sliced fruit. Yes, this was a nice place to live.

Thankfully, Eowyn is fitting into the family very well. Well... to be honest, she avoids most of the family, except for myself, Aiodhan, and Kayce. She really adores and looks up to Kayce, and Kayce doesn't seem to mind her at all. I wouldn't say they like each other so much as they have a high level of tolerance and respect. They're like two, giant, humanoid cats. Kayce is very patiently teaching Eowyn, and Eowyn seems to have a few extra tricks up her sleeve as well that Kayce is eager to learn. I think Eowyn will likely always best Kayce at horseback riding, which means I'll have to get her her own mount at some point.

But, I digress.

They're practicing out in the backyard right now, and I'm surprised at how much better they're getting, both of them. Kayce is still lightyears ahead of Eowyn, but I have the distinct impression that Eowyn won't be long in catching up. That both of them are improving so much both excites and frightens me. Did I really do the right thing, letting them learn how to swordfight? Is it really that great that I'm encouraging them to be aloof to the rest of the family and so independently natured? I don't know. All I do know is that both of them seem to be happy and content.

I'm keeping Eowyn on the same sleeping schedule as Kayce, which means she gets around five to six hours of sleep a night. It's not a lot, but since both of them are incredible insomniacs, it is better than nothing. She eats with the rest of the family, though she has a lot more sugars and carbs and very little protein. I don't mind making the extra side meal, so long as she's flourishing, which she seems to be.

Anyway, I need to get both of them on a playdate. I know Ronnie has a fae, so maybe I'll get in touch with her when I can. Or perhaps Silverah. Kayce doesn't seem to mind Nereida very much.

This house has gone from crazy to crazier in a matter of weeks. I don't understand it. How in Gaia does this always happen?

Before Eowyn's arrival, I had one rough-and-tumble sort of child. Kayce was always outside and playing and never really socializing. Then Eowyn came, and I had two girls running around outside, riding horses, swordfighting, and just generally being completely unfeminine.

Now I have a third wild child, and he adds a whole new meaning to the word 'wild.' He is a wolverine anthro, and he is the most troublesome child I have to date. While he is perfectly happy to be solitary, like Eowyn and Kayce, he is also perfectly happy to be wrestling with his two sisters.

And wrestling, when taken in the context of those three, means that I'm always cleaning injuries.

I had been afraid that Dageus would be too rough with the girls, or that the girls would hate him. Strangely enough, they all share a mutual respect, and Eowyn, being the smallest and developmentally youngest of the group, seems to enjoy tagging along behind one of the older two.

I am getting slightly concerned about her, though. While she is learning how to read and write, she has considerably less interest in both of those activities than I had hoped. While I can coax her into reading for me every now and then, she is much more interested in playing with her sword outside. She is getting good, which frightens me.

Anyway, I hear them outside again, and it sounds like Dageus has found himself a practice sword somewhere. Something tells me that at least one of the three will need an ice pack within the next ten minutes.

Plotting as a Gang

For once, a moment of peace had settled over the three children seated in the backyard treehouse. It was a chilly winter morning, and all three were appropriately dressed to deal with the cold. Both Kayce and Eowyn were wearing jackets and boots, and Dageus.... well... he just wore boots, jeans, and a shirt with a nice large car on it. How he loved cars.

"Mum said Christmas is coming," Eowyn said to break the silence. She and Kayce had left their practice swords inside, and all three children had come to the mutual agreement that this would be their hideout from the rest of the family for the morning. The babies were being fussy, Erin was more cantankerous than usual, and Tanith had had a beautifully explosive temper-tantrum that morning. All in all, none of the three wanted to be in the house that much.

Eowyn's comment prompted a hefty snort from Dageus, and he gave a leisurely stretch, not at all bothered by the slight chill. The joys of being covered in thick fur. "Christmas. Gifts and decorations and bloody mistletoe," the boy grumbled, imitating his parents from the other side of the rift. He always got cranky around Christmas. He couldn't help it; things were just never that fun.

"Mistletoe is poisonous if you eat it," Kayce pointed out with her typical cynicism, not at all liking the sound of this holiday which promoted group gatherings, parties, and other sorts of large crowds.

Eowyn blinked. "But Mum said it's all about giving," she mused, looking quite thoughtful. She had never experienced this 'Christmas' thing before, but it sounded nice. Everyone gave everyone presents, and everyone was happy as a result. It couldn't be so bad, so long as they didn't have any guests over for Christmas.

"Yeah, it's about giving people presents and being nice and happy and a big family," Dageus scowled. If he had it his way, he and his two comrades-in-mischief would be wreaking havoc nearly all the time. He enjoyed wrecking things, wrestling, and just generally being... well.... difficult. A holiday that promoted niceness was just not high on his 'happy list.'

"At least neither of you is going to be forced to go to lessons," Kayce hissed quietly, not pleased about this thought of having to go interact with her tutors, one of whom she absolutely despised. "Lessons plus Christmas decorating."

The other two made faces. No, neither of them had to go through that torture, though Christmas decorating was going to be bad enough. Mum had this thing for decorations, and they had just finished taking things down from Halloween.

"Maybe she'll change her mind?" Eowyn said, mildly hopeful. She could tell by the expressions on the older childrens' faces, though, that this would not happen. Mum never changed her mind about decorating.

Ever.

"We could always rip down the decorations," Dageus chortled suddenly, clapping his clawed paws together with a gleeful expression on his face.

Kayce made a derogatory snort. "Yes, and have our weapons and your cars permanently confiscated. How brilliant."

The wolverine anthro's face fell, and he settled back down to ponder somewhat sullenly. There was just no way out of this.

The silence that ensued lasted awhile as all three tried desparately to think of some way in which to escape this nightmare of a holiday, which included decorations (Eowyn sighed), mistletoe and nice clothes (Dageus looked sick at the very thought), and gatherings of people (Kayce's normally expressionless face looked a tad murderous).

"No ideas..." Eowyn moped, giving the house a sullen look. "Maybe we should just help out and make it get done quicker."

Dageus moaned silently and tilted his head back. That was an awful idea, but they really had no choice. "Mum will make us."

Silent and very still, Kayce pondered for another moment before offering up a better suggestion. "Maybe if we choose something long, we won't have to help with the other stuff."

The two other children looked thoughtful and then glanced back at her. "Like what?" Dageus demanded, sitting fully upright and resting his clawed hands on the ground before him. "Mum won't let us set up the tree alone."

"Or hang up any of the stuff that breaks," Eowyn piped up, knowing full well that their mother did not trust any of them with an even remotely breakable object like an ornament.

A slow (and rather frighteningly wicked) smile spread across Kayce's face. "No.... like the outside lights on the house. And the garland that she wants to wrap around the railings of the front porch."

Dageus was dumbfounded by her brilliance, while Eowyn gave a smug grin. "Yeah, and it's outside too, which means we're away from everybody else," the Kybernetik said, her gray-green eyes alight with new energy. "And it'll take forever!"

"But what about the ladder? Mum won't let me up," Dageus said, looking down at his clawed hands and feet. No way in heck. She didn't trust him.

Kayce gave an impatient wave of her hand. "She'll let me. Besides, it'll take hours to untangle all of the outside lights before we even put them up."

After an additional few minutes of pondering, none of the three had come up with any real problem with the plan. In fact, Dageus even grudgingly agreed that it was 'bloody brilliant.'

"Then let's go," Kayce said simply, scooting over to the ladder to head out of the treehouse. Really, she was amazed with her own brilliance at times.

While I must admit that I still have reservations about Eowyn spending so much time with Dageus and Kayce, there is some good being accomplished, for all three. Kayce is getting some much-needed socializing, Dageus is becoming a bit less of a brute (a bit less), and Eowyn is becoming stronger by the day. Between the three of them, they took a good day or so to put up all of the outside Christmas lights, and it looks fantastic. Now I need to find them something else to do before they get into real mischief. I'm thinking of putting them on a sports team of some sort, but I'm not sure.

Eowyn may not be growing physically, but she is growing mentally. While she just tolerates her reading and writing lessons, she is getting more adept at things like strategy. She can give Kayce a run for her money when playing board games. Her real talents lie in her sword skills, though, and she is getting fast. I worry what happens when she gets into her first fight, which I know will happen soon.

I make sure that she eats at least three small meals a day, though she usually snacks in between as well. She likes fruit the most, but she does indulge in chocolate every now and then. She sleeps about as much as Kayce does, which is about five to six hours a night. They're both some sort of insomniacs, which I can't understand. Apparently, Dageus doesn't understand either. He's a great big furry bum. Can't help but like him. He has charisma, if no real charm.

Aiodhan and Eowyn get along well, which helps a lot too. He can administrate when I'm not around. He lets her get away with a lot more, though, which means that he has to keep Erin a good distance away. Otherwise, we'd find a very battered Erin and a very smug Eowyn wielding a damaged wooden sword. My children. So difficult at times.

I should set up another playdate for her sometime soon. She needs to get out and meet a few more children her age. Another Kybernetik would probably be good. I'll make a note to do that later.

Mum let me have the jurnal journal today. She says that I need to write. I have to tell things that she does not know about. Thats fine. I dont like writing, but Kayce (her name is spelled funny) says that I will like it later.

Kayce, Dageus (his name is hard too), and me I played outside. Dageus taught me how to ressle rassle wrestle (Kayce tells me how to spell it). He beats me now, but he cant do swords like Kayce and I can.

I like the house. I dont like Arin Erin but Dad is lots of fun. He teaches me how to do swords better and Kayce does too. I like to have little snacks in between fights. Kayce doesnt like snacks, but I eat apples and peaches. They taste good. I eat some chocolate too but I like apples better.

Mum says that I have to go back to see the doctor some time. I dont want to but Mum says I have to. Im just happy that Mum doesnt take away my sword anymore. If I act like Erin and yell, she will take my sword. I know it.

Kayce promises to teach me to climb trees better. We are going outside now.

Eowyn

I'm pleased to say that Eowyn is seeming to mellow a bit. The fellowship between her, Dageus, and Kayce lasted for a very short time, mostly due to Kayce's mounting temper and aggression. While Eowyn and Kayce still get together and practice their swordfighting, Dageus will have nothing to do with them, and Eowyn is starting to explore the finer things in life. She may yet become a lady; here is hoping.

Her reading and writing skills are improving, though she doesn't have as much interest in either. Her swords are still her top priority, though she did have fun shopping with me the other day. She is living up to her namesake and definitely has some royal blood in her, if only to give her a little dignity and vanity. Swordfighting in dresses, while amusing, tends to be a bit difficult and damaging to the clothing, as she is rapidly learning.

In other news, she seems to be healthy. She is a little more talkative and eats plenty. She is sleeping a bit more soundly, which is a relief, considering that Dageus and Kayce have become even worse insomniacs. Why can't our kids ever be easy?

I suppose because then they'd be too 'normal.' Aiodhan loves their quirks. He convinced me to let Eowyn and Kayce go to the Renaissance fair. Supposedly, Eowyn is to meet another Kybernetik there. While I wasn't (and still am not) pleased about the idea, I had to agree that it would be a good experience for both. Kayce promised to keep a distant eye on her. We'll see how it goes.
