My first exposures to Egypt was an Atari game called Tutenkahmen, where you have to navigate corridors, avoiding snakes and whatnot while making your way to the treasures. My second exposure was to Anubis. this was all when I was young, long before I even knew of Egyptian religion or anything. I didn't know there was actually a real religion unil later in lie and I didn't know about any current religion until i was over in Baghdad, where I would dream (frequently) abut Sekhmet long before I know who she was. At that time i was in love with Her (still am heart 3nodding ) regardless of her past actions which She attoned for (the near wiping out of humanity).

There was another Atari egypt-themed game that I cannot recall the name of where you travel across the desert and go to all of these different temples as the screen scrolled upward, avoiding scorpions and Anubis as well as His temple (they portayed him as a villian when we ALL know He's as far from evil as one can be razz )

I think it was first grade. We had free reading in the library. I was wandering around looking at the books and saw one that looked interesting. Okay, I was six, who am I kidding, I picked it up because it had shiny letters on the spine and looked pretty.
So I read it. It was about Ancient Egypt.
The obsession just grew from there.
It might even be hereditary...my dad is also very obsessed with ancient times (though not nearly so much as I am).

At the end of 5th grade I switched school, if I had stayed one more year I would have done a project in Egypt. A lot of my friends got to, I felt left out. There are a lot of interesting things, mythology first of all, I guess I like any mythology. Mummies will interest any 6th grader, I think it's cool that we don't really know everything about it today. My dad talks about modern Egypt a lot, he says the people don't think of as that big of a deal. I guess its understandable if you live there but still.

The vast amounts of sand. wink

No actually the art. I love the art, sure its not proportionate or has correct perspective, but each picture, literally, tells a story. Fiction or non-fiction, that makes you wonder how and why they did all the things they did, in such an elaborate and huge scale.

I agree, the art had a lot to do with it for me too. It's so intriguing, so powerful, and most definitly beautiful... But since you brought up the fact that it's not proportionate or in a correct perspective, I just thought I'd mention that there was a reason for this. The Egyptians wanted to make sure that all of the important parts of the body got represented in an important way. It all has to do with it's magical purpose, really.
Here's a small webpage about it.

Oh, geez. You want me to remember something that happened that far back? evil (j/k wink )

I suppose it started because my parents and older sister are crazy Trekkies and so I grew up watching Star Trek NextGen. Picard's an avid archaeologist and I loved the episodes that had him running around after ancient artifacts. Ahahaha! Alliteration! xd It also goes to show that there is a place for ancient stuff in the 24th Century. 3nodding

Later on, I checked out a book from the school library about the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, got hooked, and never looked back. I discovered Neith in sixth grade and something just clicked between me and Her, it's hard to describe. And now I'm looking at the best college route that will take me to an Egyptological career. cool

I'm not sure. I think it started when I was in Jr. High. I would sometimes go to the library and walk around and look at the books. I found an Egypt book (because I liked different places) and it was on Ancient Egypt, and it shot me off there. I think that's how my liking for it started, I'm still not sure. sweatdrop

Lokun
[M]y cousin had a PC-game about Egypt 4laugh It was very funny and enthralling. You are supposed to help the pharaoh to build a pyramid, and you get quests from Ra and Anubis (!) ninja

*excitedspasticfreakout* HOMG, that sounds like Pyramad! xd heart

It was a puzzle game where you had to match heiroglyphics by color and type to make a pyramid.

If you did it wrong, Yinepu would come out, tell you it was wrong ("You. . . did. . . not. . . even. . . try." xd ), and your pyramid would vanish so you could start again.

If you did it right, Ra would come out, say "You win" in this weird, tri-tone voice, and raise his staff; a bolt of lightning would shoot out, hit the top of the pyramid, and it would. . . vanish so you could start again. whee

I loved that game. . . I need to see if I can find a download of it somewhere I just downloaded it again and remember why I loved it so much when I was younger: it's wonderfully frustrating. heart whee

Anywho, back to what first interested me in Egypt. . . pure and simple, it was the mythology. I was enchanted by the animal-like gods and devoured every piece of literature I could find on them-- still do. 3nodding heart

My grandmother. She's full Egyptian and has always been proud of it. Ever since I was old enough to walk and talk and the like, she'd tell me the stories about the Gods and Goddesses and the ancient rulers of the land. ^_^ When I got into school, I'd always take books (even though I couldn't read them) and look at all of the colorful pictures. Alot of kids would ask me "What is that?" "That's cool!" Then I would explain it to them. Often that would get me into trouble because the kids' parents would contact the principal and complain that a fellow student had "corrupted and filled" their heads with "satanic thoughts". It made me laugh because my grandmother would always come in and tell the people that I was merely sharing my culture. The people would be angry all the same. I suppose that my grandmother was my favorite family member because she had named me (Caira after the Egyptian capitol Cairo), shown me Egyptology, and always answered my questions enthusiastically.

For me, it was a class I took my senior year of highschool. Humanities.
What furthered it was an adult sunday school class at my church. The guy who led it was really into biblical history and knew a LOT.

Please, don't kill me guys: But after I saw "The Mummy" in the theatres, I was hooked on ancient Egypt. I started reading about the mummification process, the gods, the places and I started to become obsessed! Now I'm planning on spending two years there for college and becoming an Egyptologist. Well, that's a lie. I've branched out to archaeologist now, dealing with classical civilizations. But Egypt's number one on my list...all because of a movie...who knew?

Hehee... I love the Mummy movies! I have all of them on tape or DVD- the reenactments are beautiful, even when not historically accurate. blaugh So don't worry, no Mummy lynch mobs here- you just have to have a sense of humor about these, y'know? wink

I love those films too!

I didn't know that the Book of the Dead actually existed. Well it obviously does now, but in a form of a scroll, not an actual book, lol.
