I'm a Picc and my section kind of prides itself on music memorization but most of my band is so lazy they just have some random Band-Aid hold their music.

Is that like a little deely that holds your music in front of your face?? I feel kind of stupid for not knowing what the heck it is.. >_<

Yes, it is. It attaches to your instrument, and it's called a lyre because it's usually shaped like one of the ancient Greek (or Roman, or something) harps (that you sometimes see angels carrying), and that's what they're called.

I have a lyre, though no one else in my band does; it came with my old clarinet. I used it a bit my freshman and sophomore years for pep music and in a parade or two, but by now I've pretty much memorized everything, and there's room in the stands to just lay the music down if I need to look at it.

I used my lyre in 7th and 8th grade and we're not allowed to use them in high school. And I don't have to use them in the stands because 2 of the band parents that attened the game and help the band during games are Tenor Sax moms...So they hold up the music for us. blaugh We're so lucky! And too lazy to memorize the music!

we use them in the stands and in the first week or so for our show music till we memorize it.

It's not so hard to memorize the pieces, anyway, 'cause they're usually quite short. We're doing Proud Mary and some other one this year! surprised exclaim *likes that song lots* heart

We only use lyres in the stands, never on the field. They're pretty optional, 'cause after playing the cheers, our fight song, and 'Hey Baby' (etc) 47 thousand times in a row, you can't help but have everything memorized. XD

We had ones that held our pep band music for football games, but they were forbidden for shows. Probably because we didn't have enough of them. We just memorized the music. In order to do this, we had to clothespin our music (which had been placed in those plastic report sleeves to protect them from the rain) to stands from the band room and lug those all over creation until we had the music memorized. You can imagine our motivation.

Im insanely good at memarizing so i have never needed to use one.

Jumar
my band instructor talks about how bad it is to use those. he says that if you march with them, you are more likely to be off step, and you wont watch the drum major

I dissagree. I use mine all the time in parades and at our annual inpection with the Cadets. I can always see the drum major. Then again....our band doesn't go over like 30 or 40 Cadets...so.... sweatdrop

I, personally don't believe in marching with them, as they're a bit of an eyesore. However, if you have tons of stand music, which I don't, using them is probably a good idea. Ugh, the other band used lyres last friday. But it wasn't cool. You know why? Because they also had a KEYBOARD PLAYER!!!

Shame, Trace, shame.

Lessee, flute lyres are EVIL!!! (yes I know someone already said something like that) Hmm, we only play in the stands at pep games, so we have our music with us. However, just 'cause you got the music doesn't mean you need the lyres. I'd rather keep my music on my lap than use the devil's music holder-thingy. scream Hmm, in the rodeo parade, we have our pieces memorized, but we had to march with them at the veteran's parade and it was awful!! I was off-step the entire time.

Heck yes, we have them too, and they are called "Flutist's Friends" *waves her around for it is home because she is memorizng the music better*

I named it Fred, but we also had this talk about how they aren't really our friends, since they leave marks on your arms (if you're not wearing longsleeves, this becomes a major problem with band camp) and cut off curculation.

We use them in the stands for pep-band stuff and for band camp, as well as the first halftime show. But we usually don't use them now in shows.
