Packing Up “Explain to me why we’re unpacking stuff from some boxes and then packing it back up into other boxes?” the brunette sitting on the floor said as he tried to pick packing tap off cardboard. Something easier said than done.
Tristan laughed as he tackled his own box across the room. “I didn’t unpack everything when I moved here last year and I wanted to check all the stuff to actually make sure I want it. I don’t want to bring any bad memories.”
Tristan’s friend, his best friend Cody, gave him a flat look. The two had met in university, even worked in the same zoo for a little while. Cody was the only one who knew everything that went on in Tristan’s life. He knew things not even Tristan’s parents were privy to, the cause of the man’s deep depression about a year ago for example.
“You don’t want bad memories? Then why are you taking along pictures of Felix?” Cody asked.
Tristan frowned a little but didn’t say a word. He didn’t have an answer really. He had no reason to bring those pictures along. Even though they hurt to look at some times he couldn’t bring himself to throw them away.
“You have to hurry up and get over him man. It was a year ago,” Cody had been joking with him before. He always joked, about everything. Even though his best friend’s ex-lover was kind of a touchy subject, he’d joke about him. However his voice was serious now.
“I’m trying, I just…” Tristan’s voice caught in his throat.
It was clearly time to change the subject. Cody got to his feet and walked into the kitchen of the small apartment. Hamlet was lying there, next to his food and water dishes. He had tired himself out playing with the boxes so he just gave Cody a lazy look and yawned.
“You want anything to drink?” Cody asked his friend as he swung the fridge door open.
“A beer, thanks,” Tristan said just loud enough for the other to hear. He was slumped against a box now. For what was supposed to be a fun night of packing he was suddenly feeling very depressed.
Cody fished two beers out of the mostly empty fridge. When he closed it again he noticed a piece of paper stuck on beneath a magnet, a phone number scrawled on it. He smirked.
Well, well, maybe Tristan was further along the road to recovery than he was letting on Cody thought. He was just asking to be teased about this and even if it did nothing but make him mad, at least he wouldn’t be depressed any more.
He took the number from the fridge and made his way back to the living room, handing Tristan his beer before taking up his seat on the floor again. After opening his and taking a long swig and starting on a new box, he spoke. “So getting numbers from girls again eh? Tell me about her.”
He could feel the confused look Tristan was giving him before he looked up. Grinning he held up the paper with the number stolen off the fridge. Realization suddenly dawned on the doctor.
“That? It’s not a girl; it’s- “ he started but was soon cut by his friend.
“I should have guess. I’m not complaining though, if your moving on it doesn’t matter who its with, guy or girl,” Cody said with a shrug and pretending to sigh.
“No, no, he lives at the compound he- “ again Tristan was cut off.
“Oh that’s nice. Easier for little rendezvous then,” a wicked smile, he knew he was getting on his friend’s nerves.
“He’s helping me move in!” Tristan said frustrated.
“Sure that’s what you want me to think.”
“We just had coffee!”
“Sounds like a date to me.”
Cody barely had time to dodge the book that was thrown across the room, aimed directly at his head. Tristan glared and Cody just laughed. It was far too easy to get the man worked up about his personal life.
Tristan got to his feet and walked over to his friend who was now sprawled on the floor laughing his a** off. Tristan gave him a quick kick in the shin (though his original plan was to hit him elsewhere that would do a lot more damage, but men just don’t hit other men there.). He then took the number back and returned it to his fridge.
“Look I’m glad you found a friend,” Cody said once his laughter had subsided, still on the floor, “your not the kind of person that does well alone. I’m not going to be able to visit you much either, kinda busy when the baby comes.”
That was right. With running around and packing Tristan had almost forgotten, he wasn’t the only one who was going to have a kid soon. Cody’s fiancé, Mel, was expecting soon.
“Do you guys know it’s going to be a boy or a girl?” Tristan asked returning to the living room, having cooled down. He could never stay mad at Cody for very long.
“Mel doesn’t want to know so that means I don’t get to know,” Cody replied as he took a sip from his beer. Tristan had always marveled at his ability to drink while lying down. “What do you want it to be?” Tristan asked as he made his way back to his own beer.
“Dunno,” came the reply, “Don’t care I guess. What about you? What do you want you kid to be?”
“A boy,” Tristan answered without a moment of pause, he had thought about it, “Less drama.”
“You know if it is a boy and it turns out anything like you, there will be just as much drama.”
Tristan managed to crack a smile, “You know… your right.”

Phone Call "So how ya doing buddy?" Cody's voice came from the other end of the phone line after Tristan had picked it up. He was happy to hear the voice. He had spent most of his time since moving in just sulking in his apartment or the garden. He could really use his best friend.
"Okay I guess. I've been better," Tristan admit. He had been watching a movie but talk was more important so he reached for the remote and hit the pause button, freezing the actors in their place.
"Yeah, but you've been worse too," Cody reminded him.
"Point. So how are things going with you?"
"Same old, same old. Cept Mel is getting fat," there was a sound of another voice in the background and then a loud smack. "Ow! I was joking Mel, joking!"
Tristan snicker. No matter how depressed he was Cody could always cheer him up. Even if it was only because he was getting beat up.
"Shut up dipshit, at least I have a girl," Cody retorted to his friends laughing, but it was all in good fun. "Anyways how is your dating going?"
"It's non existant," Tristan replied. Now most of the time Tristan disliked talking about his, at best, paper thin love life, but talking to Cody was making him feel better. At least enough to talk about it. "You know I was thinking. Every girl I have gone out with has screwed me over, the only man I've ever dated ******** me up big time... I should stick with animals"
There was suddenly a lot of snickering at the other end of the line. It took him a moment to to figure out why and then he just shock his head. "Your so mature you know that.. While I enjoy your childish antics was there a point to this call?"
"Just checking in man. You said you would call me when you got settled in."
"I did. You weren't home. How do you think you got my phone number?"
There was another pause. "Shut up"
Tristan smiled, "I love you man." It was the love of a best friend, or closer. He thought of Cody as a brother and he had said it more than once.
"Dude, you know I'm not that way. I have a fiancé man," Cody replied as if he was truly shocked by the statement, he was just mocking his friend. But then he lowered his voice to a whisper. "But you know what? I love you too."
"Right now that we got that over with. Shut up so I can get back to my movie."
"Fine, I'll talk to you later guy."
Tristan hung up feeling much better than he had before. It would only last until he went to sleep but for now he was happy. He put his movie back on and sat there, a smile on his face.

Interesting Development To say he was frustrated was a bit of an understatement. It had been a day and Tristan Kane was already at a loss at what to do with the little raccoon boy sitting across from him. Holden wouldn't eat, he would drink, down the milk Tristan had put in front of him but he wouldn't eat. He just looked at the food, occasionally poking at it with his fork, but he wouldn't eat.
He had to be hungry too, he hadn't eaten anything since coming into Tristan's care. He had tried at one point. The raccoon boy had taken a bite out of a sandwich but he quickly made a face and spit it back out. That had been yesterday evening, Holden hadn't even tried to eat anything since.
Tristan failed at parenthood. Already.
He watched the boy who just watched him back. It would be easier if Holden could talk too, but he had yet to say a word. That could be completely normal as far as Tristan knew though. He was about to give up, they had been sitting there for a while and he was all done and he couldn't think of what to do when the boy moved.
He stood up on his chair, causing a bit of worry to run through Tristan, he had been overly protective of the boy thus far, worried he would hurt himself over everything. He didn't do anything though, he was curious so he just shut up and bit his lip. Holden reached across the table and grabbed the glass of water that Tristan had gotten for himself (he hadn't touched it though, to concerned with the not eating) and then he pulled it back so he could sit down.
Tristan sighed. So he just wanted something else to drink? “If you want I can get you more milk,” he said, though he sounded half hearted, he felt defeated.
Holden shook his head 'no' and then he did something that would amaze Tristan for a long time. Holden picked up his fork, skewering one of the French fries on his plate and then, the odd part, he dipped it in the glass of water, swished it around and the ate it.
Tristan just kind of gapped at the boy as Holden kept doing it. He was eating quickly, he really was hungry. “Holden... what are you doing?” he asked after a moment even though he didn't expect an answer.
The boy looked at him as if he were dumb. Wasn't it obvious? He held up his fork to show Tristan, couldn't he see it, and for that matter, feel it when he ate it. When Tristan just stared blankly at him he shook his head before he did something else that would amaze the man. “Dirty,” he said before he put the food currently on his fork in the water and ate it.
Tristan blinked a few tries before barely managing a “huh,” and nodding as he watched the child for a little longer.
Holden polished off his food rather quickly before smiling at Tristan and slipping off his chair and running off to their living room, probably to play with Hamlet. Tristan sat there for a little longer, now looking at the glass that now had little bits of food floating in it.
This would certainly make that parenthood thing more interesting.
