Rokurokubi Where does magic come from and how does it work? Lets see how many variations can be driven from this idea. A wizard gains his power by drinking a kind of tea maid from the skin of a frog. This has to be repeated every time that the wizard wants to cast a spell. However there is something in the skin of the frogs that works like a narcotic so it is possible to become addicted to magic, go insane from the side affects. (Like hallucinations.) I'd want to know why the frog's skin had the magical properties in the first place. Was it a particular species of frog or from a certain area? Something in its' diet? There's all sorts of things you could do with this idea.
Heck, it could even be used in a modern fantasy story--a new species of frog found in the darkest depths of some jungle (Amazon, African, Australian, etc.) is used in ceremonies by a tribal shaman to bring rain, heal the sick, whatever, and is 'discovered' by some interfering non-native who steals one (or more) of the frogs.hybrid_13 Most humans carry the magic gene but only in very few does it take hold and flourish. Once the gene has established itself the the magic user may take years to actually 'get the hang of magic' so to speak. This could combine with the frog theory and the theory of human genetics affecting addiction, so only a certain subset of the population is affected by the 'drug', possibly the same subset that is pre-disposed to addiction.

Rokurokubi Ok so magic comes from Unicorns The wizard steals the shadow of a unicorn and uses it to siphon off the unicorns powers and use them for himself. The only problem is that after the unicorn is drained of power the unicorn dies and the wizard has to find a new unicorn to draw power from. ((Please come up with a variation on this.)) VARIATIONS/EXPANSION: Using the power of a shadow could have a detrimental effect on the magician. Also, the loss of something as magical as the unicorn would eventually lead to the loss of balance in the world's energies. The unicorn is a healing influence, without which the world doesn't cleanse itself...

All living creatures have magic. It's wether or not they can us it that's the question. The ability to use magic is more of a genetic trait, but it can just appear in a family line, too. This ability comes from a rare gene in a creature's DNA that gives them the ability to harnes their life energy (the power that binds the soul to the body AND the driving force of magic) to perform magic. Some humans have it, some don't. However, as all dragons, Stymphalian birds, and a few others have this gene, a close encounter with these creatures may pass on the magical ability. Also, any human may gain magical abilities by becoming a Mage, as these powers are caused by a human being bonded with one of the thirteen spirits. Unfortunately, as there are only thirteen spirits, there can only be thirteen Mages, as well. Thirteen in the entire world... (a little teaser of one of my stories...)
Also, unicorns should die. twisted

This topic seems liked, so I'll put my variation down.
Magic is a sacred and mysterious thing that was created long ago within life. Because of this creation, magic is the very life force itself. Every creature has the ability to use it since they are born but many creatures of earth choose not to tap in to it and forget it for the rest of their days. They say magic lives deep within us and it connects us to others and all the natural things around us. When humans started to advance with technology, more did they forget of their sacred roots to the Earth. There are still some today who will go back in time and reconnect with the Earth and the magic it holds. This allows that wonderful magic to refill them once more and open them up to a whole new way of life. Few choose this path, but never regret taking it.
And there is one of my variations on where magic came from.

This variation of magic is part of my book. Which is going to be published sometime in the next two years....so no stealy!
People can't actually use magic. The races, like the drakath, dragons, lumen, and humans, can use magic like abilities like empathy, telepathy, future sight, but these aren't magic, only extra senses that in some animals are quite common.
True mages use the power of familiars, spirits contained within seemingly ordinary objects (like a pebble pendant, a belt buckle, or perhaps even a small statuet carved in the likeness of the familiar). A familiar grants the mage magical power, and a certain amount of control over it. This is more a partnership then a master-servant relation because a familiar can easily abandon a master it does not like and even go and house its spirit in a brand new object. Familiars themselves are usually passed down long lines of families, often as guardian spirits, and are born from 'the great mountain.' Their usually animalistic in appearance and a coalescence of the spirits of the deceased animals which they resemble. People can also become familiars and familiars can take on physical form to aid their mage in battle, mainly protecting him while he's casting his magic.

I am still working out the magic system for my story (which I have yet to write more than a few short stories), so this may not hold.
Magic originates from the Gems, which are a portion of ones soul. When ones soul is created at birth, it has a Gem in it, though the Gem is commonly very weak. The nature of a newly created Gem is dependent upon many factors, most of which are still unknown. Two major factors are the Gems of the parents, though it is unknown the effect cloning would have on the clones Gem. As one grows, the Gem in one gains power. When invoked, the Gem releases power based on it's own properties, and that of the world around it.
Using methods still unknown, a Gem can be stolen from the soul and be forced to crystallize. What can be done with crystals is still unknown in many cases. What is known is that a crystal can be attached to an item to give it something like a partial soul. In truth, Gems can be crystallized in such a way that they destroy the remains of the soul. Such crystallized Gems contain the blue prints for reconstructing a soul, though how to has been lost.
In the case of humans, at least the ones we know, no record of Gems can be found. As far back as traced, no Gems have existed. The reason for this is unknown.
Gems function by controlling chance. Not the type of chance that exist in a game of dice, but the chance inherent in matter. Recent discoveries in Quantum Mechanics may allow one to attempt to use one's Gem on a more fundamental level, and thereby do things previously impossible for them.
Sorry if this is a little confusing. Also note, the name Gem will probably change to something I feel is better fitting.
