I hate LOTR, they're are way to long, and they aren't the kind of books I read; (they're not confusing or anything I just hate those plots),however, i watched the movies and i hated them i only like all the scenery they had.

why do you hate the movies... what is it about the plot?

I loved the Hobbit. The trilogy wasn't all that bad--they actually kept the movies rather accurate to the books. I tried reading the Silmarillion, but the way it was written...ugh. Interesting plot, but the archaic (is that the word I want?) writing style bored me to death. I just couldn't concentrate on it.

I said RATHER.
I know they cut out the last bit with the Shire, but the movie was long enough as it was and most people probably would have been extremely upset if the shire was touched, regardless of the fact that that's how it was in the book.
Get over it.

i normally have no issue with movie changes... however, the scouring showed Tolkien's love of the commen man. It was the entire point of the series

um, seeing that they were trying to make 1000+ pages into 3 movies, they needed to be long... how was it dark?

I grew up reading those books. They are the ones that got me into reading when I was in 3rd grade. I started to read the Simarillion but I lost it before I could finish it, some day I will buy another copy.

i wish he had writen more books on Frodo and Gandalf in the main land. that would have been realy cool. xd

Hehe, I've not only read the silmarillion (I only read it once though... I've read LOTR and the hobbit twice), but I've also read part of Unfinished Tales. I would have read more, but it was so discouraging, because none of the stories had an ending.

Oh, and my friend's parents are comic book collectors. I went to a convention once and got this galadriel (s/p?) doll with real hand-sewn clothing... it's a collecable. I also have a few frodo action figures, and A witch-king action figure, a few other hobbit action figures, and an arwyn action figure. AND, best of all, I have an original script from the first movie.

Such a story must be long.

And the life is sometimes dark as well. blaugh And I quite like dark movies or stories cos they seem more true than the sweet ones. wink

But don't take it as I'm saying you're weird or what... Everyone's got their opinion and that's great. We shouldn't be, feel or act alike.

You're definitely right. The scouring of the shire demonstrated everything that Tolkien had been trying to get across in the series. That, of ALL things, should not have been cut out of the movie.

Still, I think that Tolkien's style made it the transition from book to movie a lot smoother than most, and even with Peter's editing, the soul of LOTR was captured.

And Silmarillion is a must read for Tolkien fans. It demonstrated his genius as a linguist as well as a writer. It is very difficult to read though.
