The 2nd most read book on the planet. You've probably seen the movie, but have you read the book? And for thoes of you who have, GOOD JOB, but have you read the Simarillion?
Your thoughts on both book and author?

I tried to read it, but I couldn't understand it much. The movies were great though.

I've read LOTR, but I haven't read the Simarillon yet. The movies were pretty awesome, too.
Peace! ninja

The movies were good. I couldn't read the book either, it was long and confusing. If I could understand it, I would read it.

I love the books! I especially admire Tolkein's creation of the racial languages in his LOTR books. He was a linguist- so his particular interest in this makes sense, but his use of combinations of different European languages is fascinating. I believe (I am not 100% certain) that he created the Elven language using Irish Gaelic and (maybe) French or some other language? I'm positive he didn't make up every word to each language he created (elven, runes, dwarvic, the language of Mordor), but he created distinct grammatical and aural patterns for each one... Genius mrgreen

I've read The Hobbit and the Lord or the Rings Trilogy (and the movies cut out my favourite character: Tom Bombadil crying ). I might read the Simarillion some time this year, when I've finished another novel I'm getting into.

The Simarillion is in my opinion Tolkien's greatest work. It is by far my most favorite book he has written that relates to Middle Earth.
It was a difficult read sometimes, but it was completely worth it.
You should try reading some of his short stories, he's quite funny.

J.R.R. Tolkien was brilliant man. he made a complete universe, with languages and religion and history and everything. i just hope i can be even half the writer he is. i heard that he began the Lord of the Rings during WW II, and his story helped convert his best friend, C. S. Lewis, to christianity. There are many parallels that one can see between the New Testament and The Lord of the Rings.
J.R.R. Tolkien was a brilliant author. i honestly think one of the best in the world. i would give anything just to have a face to face conversation with him.

You may not believe me, but we had to read one book for our university studies, and I fell in love with the book and read all the trilogy. And after some time I heard that there should be films based on Tolkien's trilogy, and I was excited by that! I've also read Silmarillion, Hobbit nad Unfinished stories. Hobbit is in my opinion the easiest to read, then LOTR, Silmarillion and Unfinished stories are a bit apart from all the rest. Those of you who like books which make you think during reading, Tolkien is for you, believe me.

I hate LOTR, they're are way to long, and they aren't the kind of books I read; (they're not confusing or anything I just hate those plots),however, i watched the movies and i hated them i only like all the scenery they had.
