I'm trying to get published by Wizards of the Coast when I turn 18 and when I finish my book; Tales of Astrodoth: The Fall to Darkness. Its about the world I created :3, taken a while making maps of it... fleshing out every aspect. It's hard making a huge, fleshed out, living, breathing world o.o But I can do it!!! razz I might post a few chapters in the guild here, so you can get a glimpse. When I read R.A. Salvitore, sometimes it makes me doubt myself cuz he's so good rofl

I've written a novel! The first draft of it anyway, I wrote it in 2 months (Evenings only, I did it over the summer when I was working 14 hours a day, came home and the only thing I felt like doing was writing, landscaping is hard crying )and it finished at 27 chapters and 80,000+ words. It might seem like a big rush job, and it was really, but I've had the idea for my novel series for 8 years and I finally started taking it seriously in Grade 9 when I ended up using some of the characters for my final assignment my teacher encouraged me to make the ideas work.

Granted, if I ever found a copy of my assignment from back in grade 9 I'd probably die of either laughter or embarassment.

I have drawn sentient creature sketches in my spare time I think 3 years ago, one for a species called the Scharda, which is on average a five foot tall killing machine. I borrowed about 10 ideas from different TV shows, books and things to make this race and am happy with the outcome. I also drew a bust for a species called Nafalians, 2 foot tall humanoid creatures used as slaves with blue-grey complexions. I'll try and post them up over the weekend, I think the Scharda sketch is one of my best drawings in pen.

My novel is more going to be a series of novels that circle around one character who I want readers to not know whether they like or hate him. He's an extreme anti-hero but not overly bad, nor is he the greatest hero of all time, he's only human after all! I used to want to write lots of different novels, but I once read somewhere that if you get an idea, don't wait until your next project, throw it into the one you have now and make it work. This is what I'm doing, and it's working out fantastically! Every idea I have, and I get about 50 a day, gets logged away for this series, I'm hoping to finish the first book before I graduate university in 2 years, I think I can do it!

I have stories in mind, but there's so many that I haven't actually gotten to write them down. sweatdrop Though, I am planning as a long term goal to publish a book with short stories, like fables and that kind of manner.

i'm currently writing two books, the main one about this girl who find out that she has three months to live- it's not actually a sad book. It's sort of about living life to it's fullest and not being afraid to take risks. The only problem is, with book i write, i usually make it around 30 pages, then get bored of the story, or don't like it anymore, or something like that.....

Never delete your writing! It makes for great laughing material later on down the road and contains ideas and even HIDDEN ideas that you can use and decipher for later stories, chapters, updates, etc...

I find the best way is to simply start over. Read over the chapter/part you are unhappy with, imagine what you want to happen/write/etc. and open a new file and write that part down. If you are happy with the new material copy paste it and save! Then all you have to do is fix up slip ups and loose ends.

I've written numerous children's books that I plan to get published...When I have time to do all the work for it.
I am presently writing a novel though, and it should be done in a year, then maybe another year for revisions and such. 3nodding

I agree with Desert_Demon...NEVER delete your writing! Keep it. Print it off, keep the crap in a folder, hide it from yourself. I miss all my old stories that I've lost/deleted over the year...;_;

If your an artist, it's recommended you keep your drawings, paintings and all your work in a portfolio. I recommend doing that.

Here's another thing...A question... WHY write to get published?? Write your book. Get it copyrighted. Then give it to your friends, random people on the street, family, associates, etc. Put it on the internet. There's hundreds of sites. Do e-books. Publish yourself! XP It would take leg work, but maybe you'd become like a local hero or something.

And, why not just write for yourself? I'm guilty of wanting to get published too...but, why not just write for yourself? Friends and family? Come on, they love you, and my family is always amazed when they read something by me. Maybe it's the same for you? ...unless they hate you O.o hmm..

I think you can get your work copyrighted by mailing a copy of your book/writings to yourself through the postal mail, then just hide it and NEVER open the envelope. I read you can get it notarized too... There's a few ways I've read to do it. We should start a topic for copyright discussion mrgreen

One more thing...WHY does your writing have to be 100%, god-like perfect? Just write and finish it. Go nuts at it. THEN revise. Get the story over with and revise like a crazy person. Make it less of an eyesore. Then get it where you're proud of it, love it, get it copyrighted, published, and tada!

Mean? MEAN!? You sound Cah-RAZAY!

Well, not really, I wrote a short story friggin' YEARS ago and I get goosebumps when I read it because I think it's both amazing that I actually wrote something and finished it and I think it's terrible because at the end of the day I always find ways to demean and hate my work for not being better than it can be.

Hurray! Someone agrees with me!

I'm writing a book, too, and it has a good 90 pages or so in it.

The problems however, are many.

First, I keep getting writer's block at the worst times, like in a love scene or a fight scene.

Second, no matter what I do, the characters feel a little too cardboard, and I can't seem to make it fit well.

Third, the plot doesn't match up in some parts, and the magic system is far too complex to be explained in 90 pages, but I can't find a way to cut it down.

Fourth, the scenery seems to be the best part of my work. gonk I don't want to hear a J.R.R. Tolkien reference.

Fifth, and perhaps foremost--the beginning seems very random aand unrefined, but I don't understand how I can change that without changing everything else.

Which I might have to do, I concede. gonk crying

Anyway, let me know if anyone has advice.

Thanks, and Vale,
-LD

Well, can't tell you what to do about that... xp My problem is I tend to make great characters in the beginning, but slowly they seem to all start to become one character until you can't really tell them apart, aside from their names. stressed

*Says a bunch of stuff* Blah blah blah, bluh blah; Blah blah bleh blah blah.

I understand that. It actually paralyzes me into not writing though ;_; My great stories will forever be stuck in me head-head....

I do that! XD I do it when I Roleplay. They end up being silly, crazy, kinda...gay XP Usually smart and powerful, sorta..O.o;;; Or, to another extreme, hard, mean, revenge driven. But then I get into these hardcore, focused moods O_O And I think I might actually write decent characters then. ^_^

PS: Leavaros, you know I'm teasing =P
