Prentice Journal 1

The sun broke through the horizon and quickly landed on Betoto's face, causing her eyes to flutter awake. She looked around realizing today was a very important day. She waited patiently for her brother to allow her to go hunting with him. It would not only be her first time going but her first kill for her family. Her feet paced outside of the storage hut, it holding all of the family's weapons.

Her bother Namagg lazily joined her, his friends tailing behind. He wasn't that much older than the young leaf girl but she gave him the proper respect any of her elders got from her. Waving at the two tall Leaf friends, her smile beamed from them to Namagg. "Are you ready brother?" She asked, ready to start her adventure as a swordsman. He turned and laughed. "So eager are we?" He stated jokingly.

Betoto was always picked on by her older brother, yet he meant no ill-will. She knew that if she was ever in trouble, he would be the first one to stand up for her. Her green eyes met his and they both laughed, getting an inside joke from their expressions.

Namagg opened the storage and handed the Leaf girl her training sword. It was the only one weighed for her. A couple of twirls in her hand caused Betoto to giggle as she placed it in her hilt, waiting patiently as the boys followed suit.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Hours passed and the group had done nothing but travel and laugh together. They had to get far enough from the village, to where the Aldabuk roamed. They already talked about splitting the meat they got and giving the pelt to the elder women to make clothes and things needed. As they walked under a large tree's root, they heard a noise coming from the West of them. Namagg's hands quickly pushed Betoto down into a crouch, her hands instantly on her sword. Her brother placed his hand on the taller friend, and he began setting up his bow for shot. He only wanted to injure it, so Betoto could use the sword for a clean cut. The pelt couldn't get stained.

His finger moved quick and soon an arrow shot out and whirred through foliage, hitting the creature in the back leg. It bucked and screeched before taking off, yet the Leaf Earthlings quickly followed. They spaced out to get as much range on the animal, in case of any direction it decided to go. It ran for a while, Betoto was almost losing sight of it. As she jumped over a low root, she saw the horned beast finally fall, flailing it's legs as it huffed in defeat.

Betoto made a quick call, one that her family used for locations. Soon the men joined and they all nodded, approving of the kill. The leaf girl's hands grabbed the blade and brought it up above her head. Her aim was right under the horn, as to save that as well for some traded goods, and it came down swiftly. Her eyes absorbed the sight and her body took in the feeling. She can't say she enjoyed it but she can't lie and say she didn't. It was instinct, survival.

The head rolled and dead eyes faced the sky. Her brother gave her a huge rewarding smile and embrace, remembering the emotions he had when he killed for the first time. A stray tear rolled down Betoto's face, and she gave a smile. 'Thank you beast. You're death will have meaning.' She thought to herself as she cleaned her blade. The only thing that upset her the most was when people killed for sport, leaving the carcass behind. Every part of this animal would be used in a beneficial way, she would make sure of it.

Once her weapon was back secured on her side, the boys tied the animal up with branches and heaved it over their shoulder. It would be a tiresome journey to carry that thing back, and they all knew it. Betoto stood tall and spoke very clearly. "I killed this, I will help carry it." She didn't want any special treatment, so the other Leaf people nodded. "We'll carry it first. Then switch halfway." One of the friends said. She smiled, grateful that they still cared for her like the younger sibling, but with the respect that now comes with her age.

~*~*~*~*~*~

The group got back to village, the men true to their words, with Betoto holding the front of the carcass over her shoulder. Many people they knew smiled and nodded in aprroval, giving their compliments with it. They hurlled the dead animal ontop of a table near the shed of tools, where they would sharpen their swords when there was no kill. With skilled fingers, Namagg taught the leaf teen how to properly take care of things so that nothing was damaged more than needed.

After some hours of carving and trimming meat, it was finally over. More than 50 pounds of meat laid on the table, the pelt was cleaned and hanging to dry, and the horns polished. Wiping the sweat off her brows, Betoto smiled. "There. Finished!" She said, excited the tough journey was over. They all started carrying different piles, to sell to merchants and other families, and was finished by the time the sun was setting. Her body ached all over but she was glad that she was finally treated like a true swordsman.

Prentice Journal 2

The day had a dry warmth to it, making small beads of sweat begin to fall at the nape of Betoto's neck. She lunged forward with her father's training sword in her hand, hitting one of the straw training dummies her father had since she was young. It looked quite beat up from her family's intense assault on the make-shift bodies, with straw sticking out in all directions and cloth tied around the body to hold in the straw that once tried falling out.

Her feet moved quite quickly and she took another swing at the dummy before she heard her father, Negoss, chuckle as he began walking closer to Betoto from their home. "You're swinging too wildly child, leaving large openings for your opponent." He said as he snagged another one of the wooden practice swords and held it loosely in his left hand. Both her Father and Brother were both left handed, while she was right handed. Her father let out a small sigh and began slowly clicking his sword against hers. The wood make muted thump noises and soon the two Leaf Earthlings were slowly beginning to go faster and harder with each hit.

Betoto took an offensive stance and began plowing forward, trying to have her father take a misstep, yet for an older man he kept up quite easily. She lifted the sword up and brought it down to hit her dad's shoulder, but Negoss was faster once again, and she instead felt her side make contact with his wooden weapon. A gasp escaped her lips and she crouched down. "I said you were leaving openings." He said with a chuckle as he extended his hand. Betoto flipped her hair up as she looked at her dad with a grin. "Let's see how open I'll be next time then."

~*~*~*~*~*~

The two continued well into the evening, each landing a couple of blows onto their opponent. Sweat was pouring out of Betoto's pores and her body screamed from soreness, but her father didn't even look phased, like he had well more energy in store. She fell to her knees and made a 'T' with her hands - finally calling it quits. Her dad smiled and nodded his head, before helping her back up to her feet.

Betoto looked worse for wear, with a cut lip and some small bruises forming on her left side and her right leg. "Mishara is going to kill me when she sees you." Negoss stated as he referred to his new wife, who took her new motherly role quite serious with Namagg and Betoto. Betoto laughed and continued. "You must be careful dad, I don't need to lose another parent." She said as she wiped her face with a cloth she brought. She could only image her step mother's shrill voice nagging at her father that he needs to be more careful and how there isn't a war so why are we fighting like we are in one. The thought made her chuckle. Her father joined in on the chuckle as he patted her head. "Yes between your mother when she was pregnant with you to Mishara now, I had a lot of angry women screaming at me."

Betoto imagined what her mother, Berirri, would have said in this instance, and after her heart swelled and her side began to hurt from breathing, she brushed the idea out of her head. Mishara was with her father since she was such a young child, and made a second title of mother to Betoto. As she was brought back into the present with her dad, she flexed her bicep. "I might've lost the battle but I'm sure you will lose the war old man!" She said as she scurried inside to wash up.

Betoto was in her home, with her brother Namagg, when their step mother Mishara entered the home with a worried look. The two children looked over and instantly stood up, wondering what could make her have this expression. "What's wrong?" Betoto asked as she placed a hand on Mishara's shoulder. Her step-mother was never one to get so worried, as she usually kept a calm and controlled attitude. She gave a huff while she turned between Namagg and Betoto. "Your father. He was supposed to return from Isd today, yet the group who returned stated he was not with them." She said as tears began to fall from her eyes. Namagg gave Mishara a hug as Betoto tried to rationalize what could have happened to her dad.

"It's okay Mom." Namagg said as he calmed her down. Betoto instantly went into the small extension where her and her brother slept and grabbed her bag and slung it around her shoulder. "I'm gonna go find him." She said with no hint of humor in her voice. Her brother shook his head. "You aren't going out by yourself." But Mishara stopped him. "Go with her then. I'll stay here so if he comes home I can keep him in one place rather than try and stop him from going back out for Betoto. Then we will be in this mess all over again." Betoto sighed and placed a hand on her hip. I'm okay with that but let's go then." Her brother lightly punched her arm. "I'm upset too but don't forget who's older." Before Betoto could spit out her retort to him, Mishara stopped them with a loud, "OUT!"

The two left their front door already mumbling about what could be happening and bickering about having to go with each other. They began their way through to the north entrance of Vers, ready to trek through the sands into Isd. The sun was high above them, and with little coverage while they were travelling, Betoto could feel the warmth penetrate her skin. She gave a sigh to her brother and asked. "Do you think we will find dad?" Her brother gave her a very serious look. "Of course we will.

It took some time before the siblings were near the halfway point, as there was a small sign with the direction pointing to Isd. It was there that they saw
a bundle of cloth near the side of the trail and Namagg called out to their father. As he called out, the cloth pile moved slightly and Betoto ran up to it. She carefully moved the top layer to find their father with a pained expression. "Dad! Are you okay?!" She asked as he hands hovered near him in case he needed her.

Negoss opened his eyes to see his kids and winced as he tried to move. "I think I twisted my ankle. I told the others to go on so they weren't behind our schedule." Namagg gave a small scoff. "You're a fool old man. You should have told them to help you back home. His father was about to interject when Betoto sharply shut him up. "Now is NOT the time Namagg. We need to get dad home."

The two children helped their father to lean against the post, and Betoto took a small bandage from her bag. Her hands wiped the dirt on her fathers foot and then slowly began wrapping it. "It's not like Mom's but it will do for now." Negoss looked at the two and felt very proud to call them his children.

~*~*~*~*~*~

The sun was now almost gone for the day by the time the family came back home to Mishara. As the house was now full, Negoss was full of apologies to his wife and children, and Betoto and Namagg were now fully bickering about the struggles of having to do this with each other. Mishara looked to her family and even with all the commotion, couldn't help but smile that her family was back home.

Class Quest

The home where Betoto stayed with her brother, father, and Step Mother was quiet as they were peacefully sleeping under the starful sky. Snores came from the small rooms, but Betoto tossed and turned and began to wake up. She could feel it was late in the night, though she could not get her mind to calm to her back into her dream state. After a couple of moments, she felt a small shiver behind her neck and perked further awake. Her hand instantly reached out to wake up her brother Namagg, and after a couple of small shoves, she gave him a harder smack to his arm. "Bee what are you doing?!" He said before she shoved her hand on his mouth. "Shhh.... I think someone is here." She said as she pointed to their small living room area.

The two got up from their hay beds and knocked softly on the wall that joined to their parents rooms. When there was no answer from them, Betoto snagged a small dagger from the table, and Namagg grabbed his sword. It all seemed like a flashed forward at that point. They heard their father yell out and grunt and Mishara gave a scream. Namagg was slightly faster than Betoto and ran into the room, where a man had slashed at Negoss's arm. Blood was falling down his arm at a somewhat fast pace and then the random man went into it with Namagg - swords clicking together quickly, as if death himself was screaming with each blow.

Mishara went into medic mode and ripped the blanket that was covering her and her husband and went into applying pressure to the wound and wrapping it up to stop that bleeding. Betoto heard more ruckus near the outside of their home and ran out and saw another man with a torch, looking like his was about to set their house on fire, with them in it. Betoto twisted her dagger, where her thumb settled on the butt of the handle, and swung at the man. He fumbled back and gave a sly smile before dropping the torch and running. The flame was just starting to spread when Betoto turned and snagged the pot of water that was full with water, quickly pouring it over the smoldering flame.

She gave a sigh of relief and then heard a yell and a thump inside. She was worried she would enter back into her home, seeing one of her family members taken from her life. She ran back in and saw Namagg, with his blade through the intruder. The man went slack and they knew he was out of their world. Namagg turned to Betoto and then both slowly went to their parents. "Are you okay Dad? Mom?" They both nodded, almost afraid if too many words were spoken, the night would not be over with.

Betoto slid her back on the wall as a small tear fell down her cheek. Her heart was still pounding from what they just went through and she looked at her family once more. They were almost taken from her. And she would never feel that again.
