▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ Class Choice Solo - Prentice - WC 789
She had long since been more interested in making music than she had been in fighting or fishing. Despite what her parents might have tried to instil in her. Sure, her mother had tried many times to get her to pick up a weapon. It had ended fairly badly on multiple occasions. Usually with a cut or two maybe even some bruises. Definitely a bruised ego or more. And her father had taught her how to fish. While it was easy and she wasn’t horrible at it, it wasn’t what she wanted to do with her life.
Not that Eihari wasn’t grateful to her parents for at least teaching her some basic skills that would help her through life. Obviously knowing how to fish for her own food would be beneficial if she ever found herself in a situation where she needed it. And knowing how to at least defend herself would come in handy she was sure. After all, when she got into little wrestling matches with her older brother she now had some new techniques to try out. But Eihari didn’t have a passion for either of those routes.
In truth she had known all along that she wasn’t cut out to be a fighter. Eih could keep herself from getting seriously hurt so long as she wasn’t up against an expert but if it came down to her having to be the offensive type? She’d fail. And if she needed to fish to support a family then people might go hungry. She didn’t have the patience to sit around all day and wait. Nor was she exactly quiet enough to not scare away all the fish. Singing tended to alert them that there was someone there.
What she had a passion for the most was music. She loved to sing. She loved to drum out a beat on any available surface. Eihari could feel it in the very pit of her stomach that she was simply made for music. Even sitting where she was now she was lightly humming a tune. She just couldn’t help it. It was like the sound bubbled up from inside her and had to spill over or she might explode.
The only bad part about her humming at the moment? Her mother was trying to talk to her and she wasn’t paying much attention. Instead her hands were tapping out a slow beat on her thighs as she went about.
“Eihari! I am trying to talk to you.” Her mother scolded.
“Hm? Wha- Oh. Sorry.” She stopped and looked at her Alkidike mother with a slightly sheepish smile. “I just had this beat in my head that sounded really great.” As if that would excuse her.
“Really Eihari..” It looked like the woman had an argument on her lips but she sighed instead and just shook her head. “You really like music don’t you?” It was more of a rhetorical question as she looked at her daughter.
Eih nodded her head at her mother in answer even though she knew it wasn’t needed. “I really do. Haven’t you just.. Felt a rhythm that needed to be followed? Like when you walk, you walk a certain way at a certain speed and if its thrown off it’s not right.” She tried to explain it as best as she could but when she saw her mother’s blank stare she slumped a little. “Nevermind.”
“I will never understand where you got this music thing from.. But..” The woman paused for a second so that she could walk over to a small package she’d set on the table some hours before. It was a chance find while she’d visited the market. A chance she couldn’t pass up. “Here. Maybe you can use this..” She pulled the cloth wrapping back to reveal what had been underneath.
Eihari stared at her mother with an odd expression for a second before her eyes dropped down to see what was being unmasked. The first glimpse of it made her gasp, followed by silence. Her mother had gotten her an instrument! A guqin no less! Instantly she was on her feet and crossing the room so she could get a better look at it.
“This.. this is mine?” She had to make sure before she got any more excited about it.
“Yes. The merchant called it a uh.. A.. Ju-shin?”
“Guqin. Mom. Gu-Qin.” She had to correct the butchered word but she was grinning from ear to ear regardless. “Thank you!” Her arms moved to wrap around the taller woman’s middle and squeeze as tightly as she could. The amount of gratitude she felt couldn’t be measured. “I will become the best Minstrel in the world with something so grand.”

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ Practice Makes Perfect Solo - Prentice - WC 919 ( 3pts )
She had nothing else to do for the day, after completing all her chores of course, and so Eihari had grabbed her guqin and headed out. She’d played her instrument in the house multiple times but she always thought the limited acoustics made it sound a bit harsh. So today she wanted to try playing it out in the open air.
Of course she couldn’t just take it outside and be happy with that, nope. She had to trek through the wilderness and find the perfect spot. Which she did, after about forty minutes of walking around and tripping over nothing, almost landing on her instrument and ruining it. Now she was all set up with her guqin laid out on a level surface in front of a small pond and surrounded by trees. Eihari sat on her knees in front of it, legs easily folded beneath her and her feet positioned to make a little seat for her bottom.
She tucked a bit of hair behind her ear then lowered both hands to the strings, one on each end of the wooden instrument. A deep breath in and she looked down at the wire strings. Her right hand plucked a string and her breath left her. The sound reverberated through the air and soon after she struck another note. Before long both hands were moving along, fingers deftly pulling or pushing at the wires to create a beautiful melody.
Eih’s eyes drifted shut as she let the music flow out from within her. Fin ears caught the sound of her own song and she moved accordingly, continuing on with the melody.
As a breeze passed by it picked up the sound and pulled it away from her, making it sound just a little bit distant. To her that added a slight eerieness to it, a longing almost. Eihari had to turn her head to the side and down so she could catch the fading notes and as she did a smile spread across her lips. She’d been right to take her guqin outside to play. It truly sounded amazing.
Each movement of her fingers meant a new note. To manipulate the sound she used her left hand. Those fingers pressing down on the strings that were plucked and moving closer or farther away from her right hand. Sometimes even wiggling to make more than one note sound at once. It gave a quiver to the music as it played out.
When she got the general sound of the song down she would add her voice to the mix. The words came out at the same rhythm. Soft and elegant.
“Hear the flute, alone in its melancholy..” The words slipped out in a soprano pitch. “The night is still young..” Each word pairing with the music of her guqin. “Right and wrong are all in the past..” Here the notes hung in the air as both string and vocals slid along the scale to mimic one another.
As her hand moved to continue on she hit a wrong note and that ended the harmony of it all. Ruined the illusion of perfection. Her head came back upright and she opened her eyes to look down. Her gaze alone said she was offended by the mistake, though whether it was her hand or the instrument itself she stared at was unclear. Eih lifted both hands and flexed them slightly, stretching them a little before she replaced them to where they’d been.
“I can do better than that.. Let’s try that again.” She nodded to herself and started from the beginning. Once more the notes went up into the air, teasing at her ears before drifting away. Her hands worked the strings just as before and when she reached the spot where her voice joined in the flow was flawless.
“Hear the flute..” She sang, “Alone in its melancholy..” Again her right hand picked at strings while her left tapped and slid over them to create the sounds needed for the song. “The night is still young..” Eih focused her attention on her hands, knowing that the spot she messed up at was approaching. “Right and wrong are all in the past.” This time with the added focus she managed to hit the right note and the smile she gave proved it. “When I wake, how can I act like it was a dream..”
Again her voice floated up with the beautiful notes of the guqin as she played. Eihari’s ears felt like they were in heaven. The sound she was getting from her instrument outside in the open made her even more certain that this is where it was meant to be played. In a place that made the sound softer and more distant. Begging people to strain to hear it. To truly give their attention to it. A subtle domination of the environment around it.
Eventually her voice faded away and she simply played with the strings. It was less so about the song and more about the sound that seemed so relaxing. The tune changed to something more slow. Less strained. It was an outflow of notes that allowed one to get lost in the sound more than the structure. Eihari had found her new favorite playing place and past time. It was likely she would be spending all of her free time right next to that pond playing her guqin to the lonely wind and wilderness around her. An audience that couldn’t critique her as she learned.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ A Journey Begins Growth Solo - Prentice - WC 683
“Eih, I don’t think its a good idea for you to go.” Her father’s words reached her ears even as she was packing a bag.
“Huh? What are you talking about? I’ll be with Uzmae the whole time.” She spared a glance to look at her dad.
When she heard that her older half-brother was going back to stay with his mother for the winter she had the bright idea to go with him. Not only would she get to spend time with him but it would give her some travel experience. She’d be with someone her family trusted, because if you couldn’t trust your oldest son with your middle child there was an issue. And she could see some parts of the world!
“Yes but.. I haven’t asked his mother if it will be alright.”
“Dad its fine. Mom has already said that if Eih wanted to come down to visit she could. She knows Eih gets mad at me when I leave.” Her brother chuckled as he moved closer to ruffle her hair.
The move messed up her side braid and she huffed at him as she waved a hand to move him off. Last thing she wanted to do was be worried about her hair. Her eyes then searched her room as she looked for her favorite shirt. She couldn’t go clear to Matori without it! Now where had she put it?
“That’s not the point Uzmae. It would be rude of me to just send my daughter down to my ex for the winter and expect her to take care of her.” He also felt a bit awkward with the whole situation.
“What? You think mom is gonna tell her embarrassing stories about you?” He grinned.
At that Eihari perked up. Her shirt momentarily forgotten. Were there stories that could embarrass her father? Did her mother know these stories? Should she collect them and bring them back like the good bard she was trying to be!? Oh that was a tempting prospect!
“That’s not a concern.. And just what stories would your mother have?” Now he was curious.
Eihari laughed when she noticed her older brother wiggle his eyebrows. That was never a good sign. It meant Uzmae had something on the person that they likely wouldn’t want others to know. When she moved her gaze just a little she noticed her shirt and made an excited noise before moving to collect it.
“Dad it’ll be fine. I’ll be with Uzmae. I’ll get to spend time at the beach with him. And while I’m there I can learn some new music! Please!” She begged as she stuffed her shirt into her bag. “It’ll be totally worth it for me. Uzu isn’t gonna let anything happen to his cute little sister.” She tried to employ her radaku eyes with a bit of batting.
“Ugh. Your mother is going to yell at me for agreeing.” He tried to reason.
“No I won’t.” Speak of her mother and the woman shall appear!
Eihari turned to look at the alkidike woman. Uzmae grinned at her as he shoved his hands into his pockets.
“So does that mean I can take Eih with me to Matori for the winter?” He questioned.
The woman looked from one person to the next with a bit of worry on her face before she nodded slowly. She understood the need to spread ones wings. When Uzmae gave a whoop she raised a hand to point a finger at him.
“Ah ah.. You will take care of your sister while she’s with you. I mean it. I didn’t teach you to take someone down just for you to let that skill go to waste.” She gave the boy a stern look.
Eihari grinned from ear to ear. “Thank you mom! I promise I’ll come back with tons of new songs.”
With the go ahead she started to move around her room to collect other things she would need. Most importantly - her instrument. This was going to be the beginning of her journey to collect songs from around the world.
(( Eihari gets permission from her parents to officially start her journey to becoming a bard! ))
