Green Cartujanth

Origin of Name: Cartujanth derives from Cartujano, or the Carthusian Andalusian, considered the most pure bloodline of the Pure Spanish Horse.

Inspiration: Andalusian

The Andalusian, also known as the Pure Spanish Horse or PRE (pura raza española), is a horse breed from the Iberian Peninsula, where its ancestors have lived for thousands of years. The Andalusian has been recognized as a distinct breed since the 15th century, and its conformation has changed very little over the centuries. Throughout its history, it has been known for its prowess as a war horse, and was prized by the nobility. The breed was used as a tool of diplomacy by the Spanish government, and kings across Europe rode and owned Spanish horses. During the 19th century, warfare, disease and crossbreeding reduced herd numbers dramatically, and despite some recovery in the late 19th century, the trend continued into the early 20th century. Exports of Andalusians from Spain were restricted until the 1960s, but the breed has since spread throughout the world, despite their low population. In 2010, there were more than 185,000 registered Andalusians worldwide.

Strongly built, and compact yet elegant, Andalusians have long, thick manes and tails. Their most common coat color is gray, although they can be found in many other colors. They are known for their intelligence, sensitivity and docility. A sub-strain within the breed known as the Carthusian, is considered by breeders to be the purest strain of Andalusian, though there is no genetic evidence for this claim. The strain is still considered separate from the main breed however, and is preferred by breeders because buyers pay more for horses of Carthusian bloodlines. There are several competing registries keeping records of horses designated as Andalusian or PRE, but they differ on their definition of the Andalusian and PRE, the purity of various strains of the breed, and the legalities of stud book ownership. At least one lawsuit is in progress as of 2011, to determine the ownership of the Spanish PRE stud book.

The Andalusian is closely related to the Lusitano of Portugal, and has been used to develop many other breeds, especially in Europe and the Americas. Breeds with Andalusian ancestry include many of the warmbloods in Europe as well as western hemisphere breeds such as the Azteca. Over its centuries of development, the Andalusian breed has been selected for athleticism and stamina. The horses were originally used for classical dressage, driving, bullfighting, and as stock horses. Modern Andalusians are used for many equestrian activities, including dressage, show jumping and driving. The breed is also used extensively in movies, especially historical pictures and fantasy epics.

"... the noblest horse in the world, the most beautiful that can be. He is of great spirit and of great courage and docile; hath the proudest trot and the best action in his trot, the loftiest gallop, and is the lovingest and gentlest horse, and fittest of all for a king in his day of triumph."
—William Cavendish, the Duke of Newcastle, 1667

The Andalusian horse is descended from the Iberian horses of Spain and Portugal, and derives its name from its place of origin, the Spanish region of Andalusia. Cave paintings show that horses have been present on the Iberian Peninsula as far back as 20,000 to 30,000 BCE. Although Portuguese historian Ruy d'Andrade hypothesized that the ancient Sorraia breed was an ancestor of the Southern Iberian breeds, including the Andalusian, genetic studies using mitochondrial DNA show that the Sorraia is part of a genetic cluster that is largely separated from most Iberian breeds.

Personality: This green is keenly intelligent. Perhaps a little too intelligent, in fact, for she is very well aware of her place within the Weyr. And, it might be noted, deeply resents it. It is not that Cartujanth believes that she ought to be leading the Weyr, no. But the amount of disrespect cast upon those of her color and kind leaves her feeling extremely sullen when it comes to following orders. Sure, she'll do what needs to be done, but don't think she won't resent it if she feels she's being treated unfairly. Don't think she won't put it down on her list of grievances. While she might be a perfectly reasonable dragon on the whole, when it comes to the bronze club, she has a chip on her shoulder.

This hasn't exactly been helped keeping the company she's kept; it is very obvious that there has been a color bias in High Reaches Weyr, as well as within the clutch. She doesn't particularly care for the way that Candidates so clearly favor certain colors. Isn't she just as worthy? But don't expect Cartujanth to start some kind of uprising. That would go directly against her grain, as she is a warrior at heart... and this warrior is aware that that would be against her best interest and safety. What she wants more than anything is to face Thread, and she'll get her wish.

For all that she has a fierce temper, she is also a lively creature who enjoys life to the hilt. She's not a thrill junky, but she does enjoy showing off when it comes to drills and the like. And why not? Cartujanth is naturally suited to such things, with speed and skill that is as much inherent as it is earned. In fact, Cartujanth loves drills. As uncooperative as she can be, she'll join the ranks when it's time to be put through her paces. After all, she has so much to prove. Not to mention that she won't act against the good of the Weyr, however irritated she might be about the way it seems to treat its best fighters.

Positive Traits: Bright, lively, brave
Negative Traits: Aggressive, uncooperative, disrespectful

Snowflake Egg: A medium sized egg.

Adult Size: 25'
Physical Attributes: A large green, Cartujanth has a long, graceful neck and tail, with an overall muscular build. Her chest is unusually broad for a green. She is a natural Theadfighter, and proud of it.

Additional Notes: Equally prone to desire for males and females, Cartujanth is likely to desire a mental connection above a physical one. While she is not asexual, she might be considered sapiosexual, for she will find intelligence and wit to be the most attractive aspect of another dragon. She has a clear separation between Flight partners and mates, not viewing any pairings as 'cheating', for it is simply instinct that sends dragons up.

Impression Effect: Urzoh is about to find it much easier to think through situations, for all she need do is lean on Cartujanth a little. And she won't even have to try. It will flow more naturally, giving her insight and eloquence that she perhaps did not possess prior to Impression. +10 intelligence & charisma!

Why Me? In Urzoh Cartujanth has found a kindred spirit. As brilliantly intelligent as the green is, she is also a fighter to the core, and needs someone who can keep up with her. The pair is well matched in their strengths and weaknesses, for Cartujanth has innate experience dealing with the frustrations inherent in being overlooked and underappreciated. She is a green of High Reaches Weyr, and that means that no matter how incredible she is, she'll never be as venerated as a bronze or gold might be. But within that frustration is a strength of purpose and will that they both share. Stubborn to a fault, this pair is likely to be trouble if they don't find some way to keep one another in check. Perhaps Urzoh can teach Cartujanth about expressing emotions in a less aggressive way.

Green Indarrath

Origin of Name: The Shire has an enormous capacity for pulling weight. In 1924, at a British exhibition, a pair of horses was estimated to have pulled a starting load equal to 50 tonnes, although an exact number could not be determined as their pull exceeded the maximum reading on the dynamometer. Working in slippery footing, the same pair of horses pulled 18.5 tonnes at a later exhibition.

The largest horse in recorded history was probably a Shire named Mammoth (also known as Sampson), born in 1848. He stood 219 cm (21.2 h) high, and his peak weight was estimated at 1,524 kilograms (3,360 lb).

Given the Shire's history for strength, Indarrath gets her name from the Basque word for strength, indarra.

Inspiration: Shire

The Shire is a British breed of draught horse. It is usually black, bay, or grey. It is a tall breed, and Shires have at various times held world records both for the largest horse and for the tallest horse. The Shire has a great capacity for weight-pulling; it was used for farm work, to tow barges at a time when the canal system was the principal means of goods transport, and as a cart-horse for road transport. One traditional use was for pulling brewer's drays for delivery of beer, and some are still used in this way; others are used for forestry, for riding and for commercial promotion.

The Shire breed was established in the mid-eighteenth century, although its origins are much older. A breed society was formed in 1876, and in 1878 the first stud-book was published. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there were large numbers of Shires, and many were exported to the United States. With the progressive mechanisation of agriculture and of transport, the need for draught horses decreased rapidly and by the 1960s numbers had fallen from a million or more to a few thousand. Numbers began to increase again from the 1970s, but the breed is still considered "at risk" by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

The most outstanding characteristics of the shire horse are its imposing height and extreme strength, traits documented both in record books and anecdotally. The breed also is well-known for its easygoing nature. Shires don't spook easily. This trait likely arose from the breed's original use confidently carrying soldiers in heavy armor into loud, dangerous battle situations.

Personality: Indarrath is a large green, but there is a gentleness about her that is obvious from the start. This is a green who is gentle both physically and emotionally; it is rare indeed to find her incensed or ready with a barbed word. Instead, this green is known for her gentle approach; instead of overwhelming someone who might be spooked, she will reach out first from a distance, or offer a calming hum and thrum. Instead of overwhelming those in need, she is happy to take her time. Every boop and nuzzle is done with great care, and even at her most irate, she is cautious bruising someones feelings.

It's easy to call her a considerate green, and such traits allow her to befriend many in the Weyr--and without. Ever thoughtful, this green enjoys learning about others so she might best tend to their wishes and desires. She reads body-language easily and will stay away if another seems to want their space; that said, she's always happy to linger if her company is desired, and will make as much time for her clutchmates as necessary. If someone looks like they need something, Indarrath will do what she can (or encourage her rider) to help. She's always keeping tabs on what those she loves enjoy--does someone prefer caprines to wherries? She'll make sure to leave them the fattest caprine she could find on their hatchday. If someone seems to enjoy cuddles after Threadfall, she'll be there to cozy on up, and offer them all the support and assurance she can. If Indarrath can do something for you, then she will, and happily so! Everything she does is done deliberately--she's not the sort to hurry through anything, because this green is constantly thinking about others, and how her actions and words might effect them.

This can lead to Indarrath in thinking too much about the wants and needs of others, and sometimes, what they want and need isn't good for them. Alas, this sweet green doesn't always connect her actions with possible harm, for it isn't in her nature to harm or hut. She'd never try to upset or distress another, or get underfoot, but sometimes she can be over-indulgent. She'll coddle those who shouldn't be coddled, or give into others wishes even if she knows that might go against a rule or order.. So long as it's not something that will clearly harm them, Indarrath can be too soft-a-touch--especially when it comes to those who look most weak or most desperate.

All of her coddling is done with only the others best-interest in mind. While some might push a wherry out of the nest to learn to fly, you can bet that Indarrath would much prefer to let them spread their wings in their own time. So what if they never leave the nest! At least, on the bright side, it means they're safe under her care--and caring is what Indarrath is best known for! She'd rather take the hit than let one of her clutchmates be harmed; she'd rather do the work, to ensure her rider can catch up on sleep or a minute relaxation. She might shelter those under her wings, and keep them from the experience that would help them grow. She'll do her best to support those she loves, but sometimes, she'll shield them far too well--which can and will cause complications later.

A lover of routine, Indarrath can be more than a little predictable as she grows. She is the sort of dragon who enjoys walking the same trails, flying the same flight formation, and having lists and plans all day, everyday. She isn't usually keen on deviation from such pattern, or surprises. Surprises mean the unexpected! How can she prepare or take careful consideration of what needs to be done when one is caught off guard? So it is, this green will follow old-habits and usual patterns, once made. She likes it, even if it makes her predictable. She's not a complicated creature, but she is by no means simple.

Positive Traits: Deliberate, Gentle, Considerate
Negative Traits: Indulgent, Predictable, Sheltering

String of Lights Egg: A medium sized egg with a shell that almost feels like down..

Adult Size: 28'
Physical Attributes: This green is as large as a green can be, and then some. She is a very muscular dragon, and quite heavy for her color. She might be slower than some of her sisters, but she has stamina more in line with that of a blue, and a great amount of strength. Her wings are large, her headknobs stubby, and her hands and feet large for her size.

Additional Notes: Indarrath will be a green who is often predictable during flights. If she has a favorite, you can bet she'll give them ample opportunity to win. Should her preferred mate not be present, then she will be deliberate about who wins in their stead--she isn't a green who leaves much up to chance. She would rather avoid breaking hearts, after all, though her own might well be bruised. Should someone covet one of her chosen mates, she might well encourage them to pursue, even if her own hearts are shattered in the process.

Impression Effect: Ruunan will walk away a much more confident man. Where he once might have struggled to communicate his desires, or to get involved in more intense conversations, he will struggle no longer. Not only is there newfound clarity and purpose in his life with duty and dragonriding at the forefront, but there is someone that will always have his back, and support him whenever he might begin to falter. He will stand taller, smile easier, and know that his place in the Weyr, and with Indarrath, is secure. He doesn't have to be afraid--not while Indarrath has his back.

Why Me? No one needed her more than sweet Ruunan. All his doubts, all his fears, all his uncertainties will be hoisted away by this green. This is a green who is here to coddle, to protect, and most importantly, to love. Where Ruunan is known to be unambitious and scatter-brained, Indarrath will be there to keep him to task. Not harshly, of course, but as a green who moves through life with determined deliberation, you can bet she will ensure they finish any projects given them.

Ruunan is passionate about his work, and Indarrath will always encourage him to continue his craft as he's able--but she is also his new passion, and Ruunan's focused care will move from woodworking to dragonriding. Indarrath knows if he puts as much care into weyrling training as he does his Craft, there is no place they couldn't go. Additionally, where Indarrath is all about routine and the same-old, same-old, Ruunan has a creative mind. Should they ever find themselves dealing with the unexpected, he will be able to help navigate them through by thinking outside the box. This is a much needed skill as Threadfall rarely goes by-the-book. She will rely on him to help get them through when she has no plan of action.

Ruunan needed a gentle but encouraging soul and a kindred spirit. They might well be gentle souls, but Indarrath will carry Ruunan to the stars and back if he so wished it. There is nothing he can't do. He is perfect how he is, just as he is--and Indarrath would never change a thing.

Origin of Name:
Originally, the Appaloosa were named for the Palouse river by which the original people who bred them. It was from this name that, over time, the Appaloosa name came to be. Palouseth's name is derived from that same river.

Inspiration: Appaloosa

The Appaloosa is an American horse breed best known for its colorful spotted coat pattern. There is a wide range of body types within the breed, stemming from the influence of multiple breeds of horses throughout its history. Each horse's color pattern is genetically the result of various spotting patterns overlaid on top of one of several recognized base coat colors.

Artwork depicting prehistoric horses with leopard spotting exists in prehistoric cave paintings in Europe. Images of domesticated horses with leopard spotting patterns appeared in artwork from Ancient Greece and Han dynasty China through the early modern period. In North America, the Nez Perce people of what today is the United States Pacific Northwest developed the original American breed. Settlers once referred to these spotted horses as the "Palouse horse", possibly after the Palouse River, which ran through the heart of Nez Perce country. Gradually, the name evolved into "Appaloosa".

The Nez Perce lost most of their horses after the Nez Perce War in 1877, and the breed fell into decline for several decades. A small number of dedicated breeders preserved the Appaloosa as a distinct breed until the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) was formed as the breed registry in 1938. The modern breed maintains bloodlines tracing to the foundation bloodstock of the registry; its partially open stud book allows the addition of some Thoroughbred, American Quarter Horse and Arabian blood.

Personality:
One thing you can be sure of is that Palouseth is almost unflappable. Even in the face of new and dangerous situations, this green seems to have a rather steady and calm approach to everything. Nothing really spooks her, or drives her to fear. Rather, she tries to analyze the situation just enough to make sure her Rider stays safe. All the same, she can be a bit too passive about things. She tends to avoid confrontation, or getting angry, and if her Rider isn't careful, this Green will be a bit of a doormat. Everything's alright by her, and it's difficult for her to get any kind of worked up about anything. She tends to be as even-keel as they come, even when something is terribly upsetting to everyone else.

She will never let Hers down, no matter what. After all, they are one of a kind, and her bond to them is the most important! She will be an asset to any Wing, duty-bound and happy to follow orders. It's not hard to teach this Green new things, as she seems to love being able to please. However, Palouseth won't take on anything without an order or some direction. She's incredibly passive, and prefers letting others tell her which way to go, and how to go about things. Even her own emotions will remain passive, never too high or low, just content to be as it is.

Palouseth is extremely bright, and often will pick up on new orders and tricks within Weyrling lessons, or wing drills, with little to no trouble. She likes to learn, especially in the context of training, and will happily follow instruction and do her best to get it perfect the first time. The little Green has a natural tendency to hide behind whoever's in charge, which mostly tends to be Hers, and not really press forward of her own volition. She won't actively seek out the company of others, tending to bond specifically to Hers, but she doesn't mind the company if it's there. Naturally, she's a bit shyer, and takes longer to talk to others, since she gets a bit anxious if she's encouraged to engage, even when she wants to.

The biggest problem that her Rider will face with this Green is the fact that she will always throw herself headlong in to work. If you ask her to do something, Palouseth will do it with out any question, and keep going until she's stopped. She wants so badly to please Hers, and to work, that she will often disregard her own well-being. Strained wings, broken nails, anything, all are easily forgotten in favor of what she's been asked. Her Rider might have to curb this early, since it will only grow as a drive as the Green gets older, especially as an adult in a Wing.

Positive Traits: Unflappable, Reliable, Intelligent
Negative Traits: Shy, Passive, Self-Sacrificing

Gingerbread Egg: A large egg.

Adult Size: 23'
Physical Attributes:
Palouseth is a well proportioned Green. She has a tall, lanky elegance about her, complete with long legs, broad barrel, and an elegant neck. Her face has a bit of a flatter nose-bridge, and her headknobs are a bit short, but she seems to be rather content with this. Her tail is mid-length, and very whiplike. This female's eyes will frequently be found whirling blue with contentment, and it is rare day indeed when they completely wash out into other, warmer colors. Her wings are large, in comparison to her body, making her maneuvering a bit easier in the air.

Additional Notes: Palouseth is a green who is rarely passionate about flights or particular about who catches her. It's not that she can't form passionate or strong relationships, she just tends to go so much with the flow of things, that it would take quite a spectacular dragon indeed to stand out among the crowd. Until she finds this amazing one (if she ever finds him or or her at all) Palouseth is more than happy to simply let fate dictate a winner, as opposed to choosing herself.

Impression Effect: Never again will Tuelarua ever have night terrors. She will be blessed with wonderful sleep, and dreams that are nearly always pleasant. As such, she will be endowed with an extra burst of energy upon waking, for Palouseth shall shield and guard her nights. +10 to stamina.

Why Me? Gentle Tuelarua, it is your kind soul that shone brightly to Palouseth as she searched among the Candidates for her one true rider. As unflappable as she might be, Palouseth is nevertheless shy, and tends to put others before herself. They are both hardworkers, and will no doubt shine in Weyrling training. Those fears and sorrows will be soothed away by the most pure love that anyone might ever hope to know. Tuelarua will offer Palouseth her creativity, which will in turn be matched by Palouseth's intelligence. Neither will ever need fear being alone... ever again.

Green Skalmath

Origin of Name: Skalmath, named for Skalm, the first named Icelandic horse included in the annals of the Icelandic settlers. Skalm was a mare of the Icelandic breed from the 12th century - it is said that the colony was established where Skalm stopped and laid down her pack.

Inspiration: Icelandic

The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse developed in Iceland. Although the horses are small, at times pony-sized, most registries for the Icelandic refer to it as a horse. Icelandic horses are long-lived and hardy. In their native country they have few diseases; Icelandic law prevents horses from being imported into the country and exported animals are not allowed to return. The Icelandic displays two gaits in addition to the typical walk, trot, and canter/gallop commonly displayed by other breeds. The only breed of horse in Iceland, they are also popular internationally, and sizable populations exist in Europe and North America. The breed is still used for traditional sheepherding work in its native country, as well as for leisure, showing, and racing.

Developed from ponies taken to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries, the breed is mentioned in literature and historical records throughout Icelandic history; the first reference to a named horse appears in the 12th century. Horses were venerated in Norse mythology, a custom brought to Iceland by the country's earliest settlers. Selective breeding over the centuries has developed the breed into its current form. Natural selection has also played a role, as the harsh Icelandic climate eliminated many horses through cold and starvation. In the 1780s, much of the breed was wiped out in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption at Laki. The first breed society for the Icelandic horse was created in Iceland in 1904, and today the breed is represented by organizations in 19 different nations, organized under a parent association, the International Federation of Icelandic Horse Associations.

The ancestors of the Icelandic horse were probably taken to Iceland by Viking Age Scandinavians between 860 and 935 AD. The Norse settlers were followed by immigrants from Norse colonies in Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Western Isles of Scotland. These later settlers arrived with the ancestors of what would elsewhere become Shetland, Highland, and Connemara ponies, which were crossed with the previously imported animals. There may also have been a connection with the Yakut pony, and the breed has physical similarities to the Nordlandshest of Norway. Other breeds with similar characteristics include the Faroe pony of the Faeroe Islands and the Norwegian Fjord horse. Genetic analyses have revealed links between the Mongolian horse and the Icelandic horse. Mongolian horses are believed to have been originally imported from Russia by Swedish traders; this imported Mongol stock subsequently contributed to the Fjord, Exmoor, Scottish Highland, Shetland and Connemara breeds, all of which have been found to be genetically linked to the Icelandic horse.

Personality: Within this young green exists a deep wellspring of curiosity. She is prone to getting herself into dicey situations while pursuing the answer to a niggling questions or trying to figure out some secret one of her wingmates is trying to keep. She is not afraid to delve deeper than anyone else might choose to, for although she is quite bright she also has a terrible tendency not to recognize when she is in over her head. After all, there will always be a way out of any given snare... right? Never mind that the world does not work that way. If confronted on her behavior, she will staunchly defend it. Is not curiosity the birth of new ideas? New tactics? Without that creativity, the Weyr would stagnate. Pern has not gotten to this fluorescence by remaining in place.

... Or so she might hope. She is an independent soul, inclined to striking out on her own in pursuit of the newest mystery, never quite pausing to think that it might be better if she were to take someone along for the ride with her. After all, who but Skalmath would think of the next great thing to do? Unafraid, and to her detriment, she'll boldly go where few would dare to follow, stubbornly insistent all the while that she knows best. Doesn't she, though? Know best? Determined to prove herself in a world that thinks her less than equal to the task, Skalmath has a spirit and verve that will take her places. Whether she ought to go those places is another question entirely.

She is good-natured, but frustrating. Convincing her to slow down long enough to let someone else catch up can be an exercise in futility, and not at all for the faint of heart. The job of bringing Skalmath to heel is one that will last a lifetime, and it is probably for the best that she has a rider who must spend their life in that very undertaking. Where others might fear Thread, she does not. If anything, she is fascinated by it, and would love nothing better than to examine it up close - although at least that she knows that she must not do. As a dragon of Pern, Skalmath has been hatched to fight Thread, and she knows her enemy when she sees it.

Positive Traits: Curious, intelligent, independent
Negative Traits: Spirited, fearless, stubborn

Caroling Note Egg: A large sized egg.

Adult Size: 18'
Physical Attributes: Small but bunchy and hardy. Skalmath is a charming thing, but not especially striking. That is quite all right with her, however, as she finds her own self worth in other things. Her explorations have left her with a decided stamina for her small stature.

Additional Notes: It will be very difficult to pin Skalmath down. Along with being an explorer, she has the hearts of a warrior. Only her equal could truly stir her hearts, and it might take some time to find that beast. In the meantime, she will enjoy Threadfighting and Flights with equal fervor. She'll have a particularly long flame for her size and color.

Impression Effect: Those around Brenva will find themselves heeding her words a little more closely than they might otherwise have. Skalmath lends the young woman her indomitably spirit, and will grant her +10 stamina upon Impression.

Why Me? Dear Brenva, Skalmath sees you for the fierce QUEEN that you are, and means to be your one and only. She knows that Brenva was trapped in the darkness of Nabol, but never again need the dancer fear that she will be anything but a greenrider of High Reaches Weyr! They are home together, although Skalmath will want to spend time exploring all of Pern, they will never again have to return to Nabol as anything but the glorious Threadfighters that they are to become. Strength is not just found in the body, but also in the mind, and it is this strength that Skalmath reveres in Brenva, and returns in kind.

Green Trimestreth

Origin of Name: Trimestreth comes from the French word trimestre which means quarter. The American Quarter Horses are known for being able to run a quarter of a mile faster then other horse breeds.

Inspiration: American Quarter Horse

The American Quarter Horse, or Quarter Horse, is an American breed of horse that excels at sprinting short distances. Its name is derived from its ability to outrun other horse breeds in races of a quarter mile or less; some have been clocked at speeds up to 55 mph (88.5 km/h). The Quarter Horse breed began when colonists in the 1600s on the Eastern seaboard of what today is the United States began to breed imported English Thoroughbred horses with assorted "native" horses. This included the Chickasaw horse, which was a breed developed by Native American people from horses descended from Spain and brought to the United States by the Conquistadors. These horses were developed from Iberian, Arabian and Barb stock brought to what is now the Southeastern United States.

One of the most famous of these early imports was Janus, a Thoroughbred who was the grandson of the Godolphin Arabian. He was foaled in 1746, and imported to colonial Virginia in 1756.[3] The influence of Thoroughbreds like Janus contributed genes crucial to the development of the colonial "Quarter Horse". The breed is sometimes referred to as the "Famous American Quarter Running Horse". The resulting horse was small, hardy, quick, and was used as a work horse during the week and a race horse on the weekends.

As flat racing became popular with the colonists, the Quarter Horse gained even more popularity as a sprinter over courses that, by necessity, were shorter than the classic racecourses of England. These courses were often no more than a straight stretch of road or flat piece of open land. When competing against a Thoroughbred, local sprinters often won. As the Thoroughbred breed became established in America, many colonial Quarter Horses were included in the original American stud books. This began a long association between the Thoroughbred breed and what would later become officially known as the "Quarter Horse", named after the 1⁄4 mile (0.40 km) race distance at which it excelled. Some Quarter Horses have been clocked at up to 55 mph.

The American Quarter Horse is the most popular breed in the United States today, and the American Quarter Horse Association is the largest breed registry in the world, with almost 3 million living American Quarter Horses registered in 2014. The American Quarter Horse is well known both as a race horse and for its performance in rodeos, horse shows and as a working ranch horse.

The compact body of the American Quarter Horse is well-suited for the intricate and quick maneuvers required in reining, cutting, working cow horse, barrel racing, calf roping, and other western riding events, especially those involving live cattle. The American Quarter Horse is also used in English disciplines, driving, show jumping, dressage, hunting, and many other equestrian activities.

Personality: If ever there was a dragon made for working with others its Trimestreth. This green is the model of a team player and especially loves to work with others. If someone needs help with something she will be quick to offer her, and her riders, assistance. Flying in a wing will always be something that Trimestreth will enjoy, she isn't one to buck against authority because of this either. Her rider does have to be careful because Trimestreth can spread herself thin by offering her help to others.

When it comes to work, Trimestreth throws herself into everything that she does. This green doesn't really understand restraint and puts her all into a lot of what she does. Because of this Trimestreth can end up burnt-out or overworked. If her rider isn't careful it can cause problems. As a weyrling, she might well hurt herself by trying to keep up with larger or stronger clutchmates; and as an adult, she could well push herself to the point of collapse. Her rider is going to need to keep an eye on Trimestreth to ensure that she doesn't ignore her own needs and limitations.

There isn't much that will scare of even surprise Trimestreth, especially as she is willing to work through just about everything. Even Thread itself does not scare this green, especially when her Rider is with her. With her rider the green will always feel that there is nothing that they cannot face or do and she will not hesitate to jump straight into anything. Her rider could have a tough time, if they are not forceful, to remind Trimestreth of the dangers and that it is okay to be afraid. This green is fearless to a fault, and in fact, tends to border on foolhardy. Not because she is a fool, but because her lack of fear causes her to lose any ounce of caution. Where some might be hesitant or take a moment to think things through, Trimestreth is a go-getter, and doesn't always think about how she might be biting off more than she can chew. Along with her belief that she can get herself out of any mess, this green can find herself leaping before she looks!

Ah, but Trimestreth is nothing if not adaptable--even when things aren't looking great. Having to switch teams and work with something new is not ever going to faze her. Changes are something that Trimestreth takes in stride. Should she need to move to a new wing? It isn't a problem for this little green. If the leadership changes? Once again, not an issue. Life is all about change, after all, and she has no problem going with the flow.

Along with an easy-going nature to help her through any surprises that life throws at her, this green has great stillness of the mind. Not many things get under Trimestreth's skin, especially when Hers is with her. Where certain things might scare or frighten others, Trimestreth tends to be unphased. The green carries a calm demeanor around her on the best days, but at the worst it might border on laziness. While she does put a lot of herself into her work she does enjoy the down time of just relaxing and lazing in the suns with her rider.

Not many people will find that Trimestreth will hold a grudge against them. In fact this green is quite a forgiving beast--in fact, she's too forgiving. Even the deepest of hurts will not cause her to turn against the ones who have harmed her. This extends to her rider as well, of course. Though her hearts might break, Trimestreth simply isn't the sort to hold it against them. This can cause her to be easily taken advantage of by those with crueler intentions. Her rider has to be careful to make sure that Trimestreth does not allow herself to become a pawn or doormat to others, though the likelihood Trimestreth will listen is small. She would much rather forgive, even at her own expense, than to look upon another with mistrust or suspicion.

Positive Traits: Cooperative, Adaptable, Calm
Negative Traits: Too Forgiving, Foolhardy, Workaholic

Elf Stockings Egg: Medium

Adult Size: 23'
Physical Attributes: Trimestreth has a smaller and slicker head. This green's body is muscled though the majority of it is around her chest. Her hindquarters are also nicely rounded as well.

Additional Notes: Trimestreth's flights will never be very long affairs. This green enjoys fast and quick sprints over longer drawn out flights. Her rider will have to be careful to make sure that Trimestreth learns to pace herself, otherwise this green will use up a lot of her energy in the first part of Thread flying as fast as she can.

Impression Effect: Never again need Valeska fear speaking her mind, for she has Trimestreth's pure love behind her at every step of the way. Her anxiety will be soothed in a large part by the bolster of the green's adoration, and patience. Those who spend time near Valeska will find their moods shifting more toward the positive, for no clear reason at all.

Why Me? Valeska was Trimestreth's perfect match from the start. They are both so very industrious, and if Valeska is a little shy and anxious, then Trimestreth is calm enough to smooth all of that over. There is not a mean bone in this sweet green's body, and she needed someone whom she could truly trust and confide in. Valeska is that perfect someone. They are each other's mirror - both so similar, and yet opposite in all of the ways that matter most. Complementary in their strengths and flaws, this pair has the potential to go very far indeed. If ever Valeska requires encouragement, she will find all of that and more in Trimestreth. The green adores the way that Valeska protects and aids others, and wants nothing more than to assist her in that regard.

Origin of Name: Uvaldoth is named for Uvalde Doll, the 1965 and 1967 APHA National Champion Cutting Horse. Two of her children - Jose's Una Muneca and Doc Doll - went on to become top APHA performers as well. She was inducted into the American Paint Horse Foundation's Hall of Fame in 2012.

Inspiration: American Paint

The American Paint Horse can trace its ancestry back to the horses brought to North America in the 1500s by Spanish explorers. It is believed that these horses most likely had Barb, Andalusian, and Arabian bloodlines and already sported the distinctive spotted and two-tone coloring their descendants are known for. Many of these horses ended up roaming wild across the continent, and were eventually adopted and bred by Native Americans.

When North America was colonized, British colonists started to introduce thoroughbreds to the gene pool, creating a sturdy working horse with a keen intellect that was steady on the trail. This continued until 1940, with American Paints sharing a gene pool with Quarter Horses up until the foundation of the American Quarter Horse Association, which excluded horses with too much white from its registry.

Despite this, the breed remained popular, and survived to see the formation of the American Paint Quarter Horse Association and the American Stock Horse Association - the two of which joined in 1965 to form the American Paint Horse Association which now maintains the breed's registry.

The registry counts approximately 100,000 members in roughly 40 countries around the world. The American Paint Horse is a very popular breed in part because it is suited to riders of all experience levels, and the breed excels in multiple equestrian sports, as working horses, and as all around general riding horses.

Personality: Uvaldoth is a dragon brimming with energy from the very moment of her hatching, bursting from her shell alongside her twin and charging towards a cluster of Candidates without much warning. It turned out well for her that time - she found Hers, after all - but this kind of energy and lack of forethought is something she seems to bring into her life every day. And it isn't for lack of trying, either. Even with the steadying influence of her rider, Uvaldoth has more energy than she seems to know what to do with, and is prone to making snap decisions without pausing to think things through.

It's especially egregious because she can think things through when she takes the time. In the moments she's burned off most of her energy and capable of finally slowing down, Uvaldoth proves herself to be a remarkably intelligent dragon. She picks up new maneuvers and wing formations easily, and for all her impulsive decision making, sometimes her quick thinking proves her well. She's the type of dragon with a mind that races constantly, focus hopping from one thing to the next, but when she does focus it's truly a sight to behold.

And nothing gets her focused more than competition. While Uvaldoth is capable of friendly rivalries, she also has a bad habit of setting herself up to compete against anyone and everyone, regardless of whether or not they're interested in competing with her. She's always pushing herself to do better, to be better than her peers. She wants to fly faster, rise higher, go farther, flame longer than any dragon she sets herself against, and is prone to wearing herself out in pursuit of competition.

But as competitive as she can be, she always puts those unrealistic expectations on herself. Outside of her self-imposed challenges, she is a friendly dragon who is capable of getting along with almost everyone. The pressure of competition may see her thriving, but surrounded by other dragons is where she flourishes - eagerly socializing with anyone willing to stop long enough to chatter with her. She could easily spent hours each day catching up with whoever came close enough for a quick hello, and lingered past her initial greeting to actually engage with her. And with her keen intellect, she remembers all the fine details of each of her friends, from whose favorite meal involves wherry to which dragons also favor her own favorite sunning ledge.

Positive Traits: Friendly, highly social, intelligent
Negative Traits: Competitive, hyperactive, impulsive

Adult Size: 21'
Physical Attributes: Uvaldoth is on the shorter side of average length, but she has an overall strong and well-balanced body. While she is a bit heavier than most greens her size, a glance makes it clear that the extra bulk is all muscle - with most of it concentrated along her flight muscles and hindquarters. And her heavily muscled chest is perfect to support her wingspan, which is rather large for a green of her size, giving her excellent maneuverability.

Additional Notes: Uvaldoth is capable of powerful ground takeoffs thanks to the muscle in her hindquarters, and her well developed flight muscles allow her to rapidly accelerate to top speed. She is also capable of surprisingly tight turns for a green of her bulk. Unfortunately she has terrible stamina even for a green, and will need a firm hand to make sure she doesn't wear herself out early into Threadfall with fancy maneuvers.

She rises an average amount for greens - usually between three to five times a Turn, depending on how she feels. She welcomes all who'd like to chase her, even fellow greens - and frankly her fellow greens stand the best chance at catching her. She breaks out all her wildest acrobatics during her flights, wearing herself down quickly but making herself difficult to catch thanks to all her on the wing turns and agile maneuvers. Those who hope to catch her will have to impress her with their own feats of agility and acrobatics!

Out of all her clutchmates, she is closest to her twin, Wahokinth - although she also has a mild rivalry with him. They challenge each other to do better each day, and their biggest disagreement to date is over which of them is older. Uvaldoth will swear to her dying breath that it was her nose that came out of their egg first!

Why Me: Why do the tides follow the moons? Why does the sun rise and set? Why does the Red Star bring with it Thread? It all simply is, and for Uvaldoth, it simply is that Niselle is Hers. For who else could be Hers but Niselle? Willful Niselle, who can reign in the worst of her impulses. Thrill seeking Niselle, who she can share the joys of acrobatic flight with. Loving Niselle, who she can always rely on to talk with her until the small hours of the morning if that's what it takes to get her to sleep.

Uvaldoth chose Niselle for balance, to both smooth out her rough edges and to bring forth the parts of themselves that could be even greater. Much like her, Niselle doesn't let the dangers of Thread intimidate her, and is fully prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice if that's what is required of her. Her rider is the woman who can bring her to focus when she most needs to, who can guide her impulses where they are best served. A woman who won't look down on her for wanting to befriend everyone she possibly can, who will support her desire to challenge herself to be better every day. A diligent woman who doesn't shy away from work, and would be more than willing to work with her until finally her energy is spent and her mind is calm.

And in return she can give Niselle that ultimate joy of joys, to take her to the skies as her heart has always so truly desired.

Origin of Name: Her name is taken from the Tyrol region (where the breed was developed), and combined with the practice of giving fillies a name beginning with the first letter of their dam's name.

Inspiration: Haflinger

The Haflinger, also known as the Avelignese, is a breed of horse developed in Austria and northern Italy (namely Hafling in South Tyrol region) during the late 19th century. Haflinger horses are relatively small, are always chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, have distinctive gaits described as energetic but smooth, and are well-muscled yet elegant. The breed traces its ancestry to the Middle Ages; several theories for its origin exist. Haflingers, developed for use in mountainous terrain, are known for their hardiness. Their current conformation and appearance are the result of infusions of bloodlines from Arabian and various European breeds into the original native Tyrolean ponies. The foundation sire, 249 Folie, was born in 1874; by 1904, the first breeders' cooperative was formed. All Haflingers can trace their lineage back to Folie through one of seven bloodlines. World Wars I and II, as well as the Great Depression, had a detrimental effect on the breed, and lower-quality animals were used at times to save the breed from extinction. During World War II, breeders focused on horses that were shorter and more draft-like, favored by the military for use as packhorses. The emphasis after the war shifted toward animals of increased refinement and height.

In the postwar era, the Haflinger was indiscriminately crossed with other breeds and some observers feared the breed was in renewed danger of extinction. However, starting in 1946, breeders focused on producing purebred Haflingers and a closed stud book was created. Interest in the breed increased in other countries, and between 1950 and 1974, the population grew, even while the overall European horse population decreased. Population numbers continued to increase steadily, and as of 2005, almost 250,000 Haflingers existed worldwide. Breeding farms are in several countries, although most of the breeding stock still comes from Austria. In 2003, a Haflinger became the first horse to be cloned, resulting in a filly named Prometea.

Haflingers have many uses, including light draft, harness work, and various under-saddle disciplines such as endurance riding, dressage, equestrian vaulting, and therapeutic riding. They are also still used by the Austrian and German armies for work in rough terrain. The World Haflinger Federation, the international governing body that controls breed standards for the Haflinger, is made up of a confederation of 22 national registries, and helps set breeding objectives, guidelines, and rules for its member organizations.

Personality: Though generally quiet, Zyreth is definitely intelligent, and make no mistake. She's quick to catch onto things while training, and easy to work with. If a behavior is encouraged (or not discouraged), Zyreth is likely to pursue it further. Her rider will need to keep that in mind as she grows. Being this bright means she's likely to get into mischief though, whether it's by stepping beyond the boundaries of her station as a green, or something as silly as trying to sneak out late to play in the snow.

She can also be rather stubborn at times. If Zyreth believes that she knows more than her rider, or that her plan is better, it can be difficult to convince her to listen. For example, if she has decided that doing drills in a rainstorm is unsafe, she may be very reluctant or refuse to go. She's not doing this to be vindictive or problematic, she's simply decided that it might be dangerous and that the wisest course of action is to stay out of it. In such cases, it's better to just show her that it's ok, by having someone leading the example.

Perhaps it's not too surprising, though, to learn that with her friendly nature, she's likely to make a good Searchdragon when she gets older. However, she might well unnerve some of the more nervous candidates with her tendency to nuzzle them while doing so.

Positive Traits: quiet, friendly, intelligent
Negative Traits: stubborn, wary, inquisitive

Adult Size: 21'
Physical Attributes: Though she's not particularly tall, Zyreth will always have a slender look to her. She's well muscled, her back slightly longish, and her wings a little wider to accommodate that. Her legs are perhaps slightly longer than the average.

Additional Notes: Endurance might not be her greatest strength, but with her lighter build Zyreth will be a touch faster, and maneuverable. Her tolerance for pain will be high, though naturally she'll still try to avoid it. It will definitely help if she ever needs the assistance of a healer, though.

Why Me: Really, none other would do, and this green knew that the moment she sensed the girl. The two are remarkably alike, though they're just different enough to be able to help one another. In Avali, Zyreth has found a quiet mind who is not likely to try to force her to do something before she's ready. The girl offers patient explanations and examples to help her new winged friend to learn what she needs. Likewise, though the girl is rather shy, this green's tendency to be friendly will lead Avali into situations where she must learn to interact with others, and over time help her to feel more comfortable when speaking with people, and increase her self confidence as well
