Name: R'uun (formerly Ruunan)
Age: 17
Nameday: 3558.07.07
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Unrealised homosexual
Craft: Woodcraft
Rank: Weyrling Candidate, Apprentice Woodcrafter
Location: High Reaches Weyr

Physical Description:
A curly crop of messy, dark brown hair gives Ruunan a boyish, innocent look. His eyes are a warm chestnut brown, and thick lashes cloak them in mystery. He has a rounded nose, and a rather long face with high cheekbones. His dimples are ever visible, his pleasant smile an almost-permanent feature of his demeanour. Despite a tendency to blush, very little colour shows through the olive tan of his skin. He has a soft, expressive face.

He is lean, and slightly below average in height. Muscle and fat seems to hide beneath slender limbs. His fast metabolism gives him an undernourished look despite a healthy appetite. Ruunan sickens easily with common ailments, prone to bad sniffles and occasional fevers in winter, but he is surprisingly sturdy. To date he has not broken any bones, despite his peculiar clumsiness. Small scars criss-cross nimble fingers, the results of his long Turns of woodwork and carpentry.

He dresses simply, never complaining of hand-me-downs or patchwork clothes. He has no preference for colour, either, but his mother tells him that earthy colours suit him more. He dresses slightly better for Gathers, but with little care for fashion his wardrobe seems a little lacklustre amongst the frippery of celebration. He keeps bits and bobs and things in his pockets- often things that he has made himself, like wooden buttons or dice. Being able to touch these things brings him a great sense of calm, and he is a bit of a fidgety hoarder.

Personality:
A softly-spoken, mild-mannered young man, Ruunan is content with the simple things in life. He daydreams a lot, often fantastical scenes in which he is more extroverted or confident. He is pleasant but may strike some as not quite wholly there, attention-wise. Easily distracted and sidetracked, Ruunan might even be described as slapdash and unfocused. He means well, but there are just so many more interesting things to think about… so his attention slips.

He is a sweet young man with a tenderness that does not discriminate. His lack of realism gives him the wonderful ability to ignore people’s flaws: criticism and malice do not affect him at all. He tunes out yelling, and makes a hasty departure from violent scenarios. Affable and kind-hearted, he is unphased by the general awfulness of humanity, content with his lot in life and thoroughly unconcerned with changing it.

Unambitious and often scatterbrained, it's a wonder that he achieves anything at all. Ruunan is actually quite proud of his carpentry skills. His slow, methodical approach to life sees him making few mistakes, and he is a highly creative individual. He likes to express himself through his work, which is probably his only serious passion in life for the time being. He is possessive of his tools and final products, painfully uncomfortable if someone were to break something he had made.

He has very little in the way of temper, but tends to grow silent and cold when teased or bullied. He doesn't mind speaking with others, but his whimsical tendencies often result in him trailing off or losing the thread of the conversation. Intense discussions are difficult for him to process, so he grows quieter during debates or arguments. He dislikes difficulty in his life, and clings to a happy-go-lucky facade to avoid dealing with life’s complications.

Ruunan has not experienced all of the hormonal attraction that supposedly drives folks his age to pursue other folks around his age, but he is all too aware that his attention is drawn more to men than women. Love is a difficult, messy thing, so he does most of his observing from afar, quiet and content to enjoy what he sees. He does not dispute his own homosexuality, but Ruunan preys that nobody will notice at all because of his marked disinterest in romance altogether.

Positive Trait List Happy-go-lucky - Kindhearted - Deeply selfless
Negative Trait List Lacking motivation - Non-confrontational - Inattentive

History:
Rakara was a talented Journeyman Weaver stationed at Igen Hold. An intimate relationship with a man by the name of Evidan resulted in pregnancy, but she chose to hide the baby from him and his family as he was being pressured to pursue his own career. She gave birth to a girl whom she named Nyaranau in 3555. To avoid pressing questions and awkward remarks, Rakara chose to move somewhere she would never be recognised.

High Reaches Weyr became her and her daughter’s new home. Rakara could continue to work on her Craft, and Nyaranau could grow up without any awkwardness in her life. A few Turns later, as a result of a Goldflight, Rakara had a one-night Stand with bronzerider U’zan. In 3558, she gave birth to her son, and named him Ruunan.

And so it was that Ruunan became a weyrbrat. He had an unending curiosity for the world around him that was rarely satisfied, coupled with a strong desire not to make any waves whatsoever. Nyaranau was far more adventurous than he, but his sweetness and affableness endeared him to the creche workers and many other weyrbrats his age, and he was not lonely despite his lack of motivation for most of life’s real responsibilities (like growing up and finding a Craft).

Eventually, at age ten, he became a formal apprentice to one of the Weyr’s Journeymen Woodcrafters, and began to develop a passion for carpentry. As he gained experience, he discovered an ability to communicate his inner emotions through embellishments on simple pieces of furniture, and developed an eye for style that reflected his inner creativity. It was one of the few true passions he had in his life.

At fourteen, he joined his sister as a candidate for High Reaches clutches. When Thread began to fall once more, and devastate Pern as the ballads of old had warned, Ruunan found himself truly afraid for one of the first times in his life. If he did Impress… shells… he’d have to fight, wouldn’t he? Well… Nyaranau seemed excited by the prospect… but he wasn’t exactly thrilled. Plus people died. He was happy with not dying. The Weyr was in uproar. The world was thrown into chaos. And his gentle, bubbly life-river was throwing him into stronger and faster currents.

He might have to face his father's disappointment if he gave up. The Weyr might turn him out if he failed in his duties. Ruunan kept up his work in carpentry and pursued candidacy when needed, when clutches filled the sands of the High Reaches hatching grounds. Even now, with doubt and fear nibbling away at his thoughts, he hopes fate remains kind to him.

Origin of Name: The Shire has an enormous capacity for pulling weight. In 1924, at a British exhibition, a pair of horses was estimated to have pulled a starting load equal to 50 tonnes, although an exact number could not be determined as their pull exceeded the maximum reading on the dynamometer. Working in slippery footing, the same pair of horses pulled 18.5 tonnes at a later exhibition.

The largest horse in recorded history was probably a Shire named Mammoth (also known as Sampson), born in 1848. He stood 219 cm (21.2 h) high, and his peak weight was estimated at 1,524 kilograms (3,360 lb).

Given the Shire's history for strength, Indarrath gets her name from the Basque word for strength, indarra.

Inspiration: Shire

The Shire is a British breed of draught horse. It is usually black, bay, or grey. It is a tall breed, and Shires have at various times held world records both for the largest horse and for the tallest horse. The Shire has a great capacity for weight-pulling; it was used for farm work, to tow barges at a time when the canal system was the principal means of goods transport, and as a cart-horse for road transport. One traditional use was for pulling brewer's drays for delivery of beer, and some are still used in this way; others are used for forestry, for riding and for commercial promotion.

The Shire breed was established in the mid-eighteenth century, although its origins are much older. A breed society was formed in 1876, and in 1878 the first stud-book was published. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there were large numbers of Shires, and many were exported to the United States. With the progressive mechanisation of agriculture and of transport, the need for draught horses decreased rapidly and by the 1960s numbers had fallen from a million or more to a few thousand. Numbers began to increase again from the 1970s, but the breed is still considered "at risk" by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

The most outstanding characteristics of the shire horse are its imposing height and extreme strength, traits documented both in record books and anecdotally. The breed also is well-known for its easygoing nature. Shires don't spook easily. This trait likely arose from the breed's original use confidently carrying soldiers in heavy armor into loud, dangerous battle situations.

Personality: Indarrath is a large green, but there is a gentleness about her that is obvious from the start. This is a green who is gentle both physically and emotionally; it is rare indeed to find her incensed or ready with a barbed word. Instead, this green is known for her gentle approach; instead of overwhelming someone who might be spooked, she will reach out first from a distance, or offer a calming hum and thrum. Instead of overwhelming those in need, she is happy to take her time. Every boop and nuzzle is done with great care, and even at her most irate, she is cautious bruising someones feelings.

It's easy to call her a considerate green, and such traits allow her to befriend many in the Weyr--and without. Ever thoughtful, this green enjoys learning about others so she might best tend to their wishes and desires. She reads body-language easily and will stay away if another seems to want their space; that said, she's always happy to linger if her company is desired, and will make as much time for her clutchmates as necessary. If someone looks like they need something, Indarrath will do what she can (or encourage her rider) to help. She's always keeping tabs on what those she loves enjoy--does someone prefer caprines to wherries? She'll make sure to leave them the fattest caprine she could find on their hatchday. If someone seems to enjoy cuddles after Threadfall, she'll be there to cozy on up, and offer them all the support and assurance she can. If Indarrath can do something for you, then she will, and happily so! Everything she does is done deliberately--she's not the sort to hurry through anything, because this green is constantly thinking about others, and how her actions and words might effect them.

This can lead to Indarrath in thinking too much about the wants and needs of others, and sometimes, what they want and need isn't good for them. Alas, this sweet green doesn't always connect her actions with possible harm, for it isn't in her nature to harm or hut. She'd never try to upset or distress another, or get underfoot, but sometimes she can be over-indulgent. She'll coddle those who shouldn't be coddled, or give into others wishes even if she knows that might go against a rule or order.. So long as it's not something that will clearly harm them, Indarrath can be too soft-a-touch--especially when it comes to those who look most weak or most desperate.

All of her coddling is done with only the others best-interest in mind. While some might push a wherry out of the nest to learn to fly, you can bet that Indarrath would much prefer to let them spread their wings in their own time. So what if they never leave the nest! At least, on the bright side, it means they're safe under her care--and caring is what Indarrath is best known for! She'd rather take the hit than let one of her clutchmates be harmed; she'd rather do the work, to ensure her rider can catch up on sleep or a minute relaxation. She might shelter those under her wings, and keep them from the experience that would help them grow. She'll do her best to support those she loves, but sometimes, she'll shield them far too well--which can and will cause complications later.

A lover of routine, Indarrath can be more than a little predictable as she grows. She is the sort of dragon who enjoys walking the same trails, flying the same flight formation, and having lists and plans all day, everyday. She isn't usually keen on deviation from such pattern, or surprises. Surprises mean the unexpected! How can she prepare or take careful consideration of what needs to be done when one is caught off guard? So it is, this green will follow old-habits and usual patterns, once made. She likes it, even if it makes her predictable. She's not a complicated creature, but she is by no means simple.

Positive Traits: Deliberate, Gentle, Considerate
Negative Traits: Indulgent, Predictable, Sheltering

String of Lights Egg: A medium sized egg with a shell that almost feels like down..

Adult Size: 28'
Physical Attributes: This green is as large as a green can be, and then some. She is a very muscular dragon, and quite heavy for her color. She might be slower than some of her sisters, but she has stamina more in line with that of a blue, and a great amount of strength. Her wings are large, her headknobs stubby, and her hands and feet large for her size.

Additional Notes: Indarrath will be a green who is often predictable during flights. If she has a favorite, you can bet she'll give them ample opportunity to win. Should her preferred mate not be present, then she will be deliberate about who wins in their stead--she isn't a green who leaves much up to chance. She would rather avoid breaking hearts, after all, though her own might well be bruised. Should someone covet one of her chosen mates, she might well encourage them to pursue, even if her own hearts are shattered in the process.

Impression Effect: Ruunan will walk away a much more confident man. Where he once might have struggled to communicate his desires, or to get involved in more intense conversations, he will struggle no longer. Not only is there newfound clarity and purpose in his life with duty and dragonriding at the forefront, but there is someone that will always have his back, and support him whenever he might begin to falter. He will stand taller, smile easier, and know that his place in the Weyr, and with Indarrath, is secure. He doesn't have to be afraid--not while Indarrath has his back.

Why Me? No one needed her more than sweet Ruunan. All his doubts, all his fears, all his uncertainties will be hoisted away by this green. This is a green who is here to coddle, to protect, and most importantly, to love. Where Ruunan is known to be unambitious and scatter-brained, Indarrath will be there to keep him to task. Not harshly, of course, but as a green who moves through life with determined deliberation, you can bet she will ensure they finish any projects given them.

Ruunan is passionate about his work, and Indarrath will always encourage him to continue his craft as he's able--but she is also his new passion, and Ruunan's focused care will move from woodworking to dragonriding. Indarrath knows if he puts as much care into weyrling training as he does his Craft, there is no place they couldn't go. Additionally, where Indarrath is all about routine and the same-old, same-old, Ruunan has a creative mind. Should they ever find themselves dealing with the unexpected, he will be able to help navigate them through by thinking outside the box. This is a much needed skill as Threadfall rarely goes by-the-book. She will rely on him to help get them through when she has no plan of action.

Ruunan needed a gentle but encouraging soul and a kindred spirit. They might well be gentle souls, but Indarrath will carry Ruunan to the stars and back if he so wished it. There is nothing he can't do. He is perfect how he is, just as he is--and Indarrath would never change a thing.
