x A Propensity for Fixation x

'Tiktiktiktiktik.' Nataniel rapidly clicked his pen tip against the surface of his desk. He sat in his first class, eight o'clock in the morning, staring at his computer screen and tapping his pen impatiently as he waited for his professor to show up. It was the day of their final for the summer course, and this man had the audacity to keep them waiting after all the effort he'd had to put in over the short summer term?

The class was, admittedly, far from Nataniel's favorite. It was something called 'Principles of Morality,' and his academic advisor had assured him there was almost no reason for Nat to take the class unless he wanted a degree in Philosophy or maybe Psychology...

Nataniel did not want a degree in either of these things, but as he hadn't selected a degree path, yet, despite his age, his advisor had eventually conceeded to the thought of allowing him to register for the class on the off chance it might be something he enjoyed. Nataniel had not seen fit to correct him. He wasn't in school for the degree, something he'd said to his parents a handful of times.

He was in school because he didn't know how to not be in school. It was as simple as that.

For as long as he could remember, it was all his life had focused around. Wake up, get on a bus, go to class, come home, do homework, excel in whatever subject he set his mind to. That was just how it was supposed to go. It was all Nataniel understood. Coming of an 'adult' age shouldn't mean an end to that, and it didn't have to. ...So long as Nataniel didn't fulfill whatever specific requirements would grant him an actual degree.

His mother complained, of course. "Bakavaas, Nataniel," she would hiss, her voice low and her eyes narrowed as she would glower at him. "Waste of time. Waste of money." And he certainly understood the sentiment. Despite her ire, though, she never stopped funding him, so he never stopped going.

To someone with her perspective, it was wasteful. There was no benefit for Mikali to fund her son's exploits when there was no definitive end to them. Nataniel understood that much. But even if he didn't like the classes or the knowledge wouldn't ever be useful to him, there was still benefit in the schedule, and that wasn't something Nataniel couldn't dismiss so easily. Of course it was easy for him to blow off expenses when his parents paid for everything. Of course it was easy for him to justify the time it took when there was nothing else to fill the gap. Of course these nonsense classes were useful to him because he needed this.

He simply didn't know what he'd do, otherwise.

Even the annoyance over a late professor was something that could be managed better than facing the unknown... And there were too many unknowns in Destiny City to risk adding another. Too much was already too strange and too convoluted. So this was simply for the best.

This schedule, this routine. This was the only way Nataniel knew to make things work.

x Senior Audit x

Nataniel checked his school email every day he had class. They mostly consisted of campus-wide bulletin announcements, with an interspersed scattering from his professors on class scheduling and details of assignments that were due. Sometimes his advisors would send out reminders about registering, or the career center would advertise positions for student openings. Most of them Nataniel found irrelevant. Certainly nothing worth responding to, so long as he gave a passive acknowledgement to the information, as none of them were specific to him, so much as they were for an entire class or the school as a whole.

In the wake of the beginning summer semester, Nat had ignored most of what was more ‘personalized’ to him. He noted them peripherally, then moved on to topics more engaging. One such email to accidentally fall to the wayside was the gentle prompting that he had (at some point) designated that this was to be his last year attending DCU.

During various forms for enrollment and selecting which major he had graduated under, Nataniel had claimed that he intended to graduate with a Bachelor of General Studies in the Winter of 2019. The end of the fall semester.

He’d switched majors a handful of times already, perhaps enough so and with the frequency that such an email had never managed to make it to him, previously. After all, it was much his goal to simply not graduate. He wanted to attend class. The subject of his studies hardly mattered. He was good at school, and it was familiar to him. What could he possibly do if he wasn’t in school? But here it was, an email reminding him in no uncertain terms that he was approaching the end of the line.

A “Senior Audit.”

He’d accidentally-intentionally ignored the first prompt, that had come during the previous spring. The alleged ‘graduation’ was to be in the winter, many months away. He had time. The follow up that had come at the beginning of this semester had been treated similarly. There was still time, and this was not a topic Nataniel wanted to face unnecessarily.

The third email, however, came with a threat: until he completed the audit with his advisor, he would not be allowed to register for fall classes.

If he didn’t do what was being asked, he would simply not be permitted to resume the routine he craved so desperately.

How sick.

Nataniel glowered at his laptop screen, lip curling in distaste as his brows pinched in frustration. What a ridiculously cruel and unnecessary ultimatum to coerce him to respond when he simply didn’t want to. Even if he had procrastinated and would continue to do so if allowed, was it really so terrible? It wasn’t as though the decision was impacting anyone else or their studies…

Maybe it was odd to have a twenty-four-year-old still living in university housing, and maybe the school was tired of providing him with grants and scholarships if it happened they never amounted to anything, but overall, no one was being harmed or hampered…

Nataniel sighed, letting the tension melt from his shoulders as his fingers roved quickly and quietly over the keyboard. But neither was he being harmed, either. Just greatly inconvenienced. He could set up a meeting with the advisor, straighten it out by explaining that he’d decided of his own accord to switch majors once more, and his graduation date was going to need to be pushed back.

Yet again.

Nataniel doubted there would be any push back.

x Months of Change x

Yet there was more than just school happening in Nataniel’s life, now.

It was unusual, as he was accustomed to a ‘norm’ that seemed absolutely desperate to shatter beyond the realms of Nat’s comfort and understanding… He was used to rising before the sun, working out for an hour or two to maintain his preferred body shape, returning home after his jog to shower and prepare for the day, attending classes (even during summer), and then spending the majority of the rest of the day in the sanctity of his bedroom with the entertainment of his laptop.

How could there be so much craziness beyond his scope of knowledge that he’d been so unaware of…? Nataniel wasn’t social and spent only a minimal amount of time engaging others. He didn’t often pay heed to senseless propaganda and only rarely spent time outside beyond his ritual jogging.

Yet in a matter of only a couple months, he’d had opportunities to meet a wolf-boy who harvested energy from passerby, a ‘senshi’ out combatting vicious shadowy monsters, and a talking cat with the ability to transform into something that was practically human… ‘Meet’ was perhaps a gentle word for the myriad of odd encounters, but he had learned something from each of them. About more being out there than Nat may have thought reasonable to give credit to.

Though he’d always heard there was some modicum of truth behind every good rumor or tall tale.

Nataniel was only left to wonder what he was supposed to do with the information. Despite a jibe from wolf boy about making Nat ‘just like him,’ there didn’t seem to be evidence that he could do anything with the knowledge. Anyone who was unfamiliar with the events wouldn’t believe him, and anyone who was already in on it… Well, it was unknown what they would do. But he had already been threatened once and cautioned another time. So many questionable variables…

And no way to tell what was what or who was who. No way to guard against future encounters with werewolves or shadow monsters…

What was someone like Nataniel supposed to do the next time a youma came after him, beyond just pray that someone like Zubeneschamali happened to be around again? What would he do if dog-boy had decided to kill him, as he’d so eagerly threatened? Nat could choose to never go outside at all, but he already did so so infrequently that he couldn’t imagine limiting it further would be any heightened boon to him.

Even Nataniel could not remain cooped up in his bedroom indefinitely…

And he was not a man to allow fear to dominate his motivations.

When it came down to it, this didn’t have to affect him anymore than it had for most of his life. It was odd that such a flurry of activity happened within such a brief time frame, and Nataniel would of course prefer to have a bit more control over these occurrences and the situations they led to… But it happened that his preferences mattered little. There was no choice but to accept things as they were.

No matter how bothersome it may be.
