Pello was a bundle of nerves. It took away from his normally grinning self, but it was there none the less. As he floated around, his face a mask of seriousness, he considered why all of this was happening. It was really simple, enough so that he was able to count it off on the slim fingers that lined his hands.
Firstly, he was trapped within his home thanks to this terrible storm, the anger of their great mother tossing against the reef he called home. It was too dangerous even for the strongest swimmers to go outside of the safety of their village, because the currents pulled and tugged until one grew lost out at sea. Getting back from that was near impossible, and some who had tried were assumed to have settled with their deep sea neighbors, waiting it out much like those closer to the sands.
Secondly, he was stuck with his small family, entertaining his sister who was even younger and even more energetic than he. Usually, Ngaio was someone he could play about with, but even he wasn't used to spending every single day with the bright little girl. Eventually, he shoved her off on their mother, and hid away in the little corner of his room hoping she wouldn't dare crawl in after him.
Thirdly, everything was just so bland in the world. The rains seemed to cause a shadow across the world. Less light came through the waves, there was no sun to sunbathe, and sometimes it got so stormy that it was like night, with flashes of light the only illumination. For a kid born in the sun, it was difficult to swallow. His family tried to cheer him up, but eventually they focused on Ngaio, maybe as a distraction for their own woes of lack of work thanks to the dangerous travels.
Finally, when the sun began to shine a little between the clouds, leaders from their home traveled out to seek those lost and connect with the other settlements. With the hapuna being such swift simmers, and having a network of established communication teams, word came back quickly that something had changed around them. Where there once was a grooved bank of sand and grass, a river sprung to life feeding freshwater into the ocean. Those that swum into it began to feel light headed, like they were walking on land, and struggled to adapt. Only a few lasted long enough to acclimate, and were determined to explore deeper.
Pello wasn't really sure why everyone was excited to swim up against the strong river current. The few other rivers they found led no where fast, so why was this one so different. It was little Ngaio who grinned, having heard from her friend who heard from her parents, about the truth of the freshwater. Ages ago, there used to be races above the sea. They lived in the shallow rivers and murky swamps of the mainland, where they survived with little support from the ocean dwellers. The reef travelers would be a trading post, but most deep sea dwellers cared not to interact. It mainly was the reef and the rivers, with the others content to sit outside of the partnership.
Eventually, the river began to dry out, and any possibly way to pass was cut off. Most assumed the rest of the mainland dried too, but still there was curiosity and hope. Maybe, they still lived. Maybe they thrived. Maybe they would be ready for another relationship.
Pello found the curiosity inspiring him to perk up. The sun was starting to shine, an adventure was about to begin, and he was finally ready to visit his friend. Oh, he couldn't wait to see Kaikamahine, to see what she heard and what she thought. His friend was just as curious as he, and he loved to visit her and gossip while they played. He also was curious about what Etana would think. He wasn't too sure about her, their relationship merely once every so often meetings, and her sister scared the heck out of him. But he wanted to talk about it, and see if others were as curious as he. The muds and the rivers sounded....interesting. It wasn't home, but boy did he want to see what it was.
In fact, he would ask his mother if she planned on shipping out to there. If so, maybe he could offer his help and get a free trip up the river. People claimed the river people were like ghosts, the color of the rippling freshwater they lived in. Others said the marsh people were like monsters, covered in mud and grasses and able to see even through the ground itself. He wasn't sure about that, but so many were certain that there had to be some sort of truth...right?
Pello laughed to himself, swimming to the waves of the surface and surfing a bit to get on top of a crest. He tried to see beyond their sands, beyond the trees, beyond everything. But he could only see trees and grasses and maybe the top of a tall, tall hill. Everything else was covered in clouds and mists, the rains still hitting the lands but not like before. As he fell back to the waters of the reef, he looked around at the others coming out into the open. Everyone was gossiping, everyone was excited, and everyone seemed ready to get back to the happy lives they once lived.

Solo ☼ The Idea Of Home Posts ☼ 614 Points ☼ 2
His parents were doing it, they were really going to do it. They were going to the freshwater, to the lands of the silverfish and swamp things. They were going to a place not many had gone to before...well before the storms. Now a days it seemed like everyone was going at least a little into the land, to see what the fuss was about. Or everyone was coming to see them.
Pello didn't mind it, in fact he appreciated witnessing the new culture. Seeing the regal river people and their silver colors, like the moonlight filtering through the sea right before he goes to bed. Or those few swamp people who were so strict and didn't seem too much fun, but determined to make something of themselves. They were both so interesting, and it was exciting to see them appear as good out of the month's long storms.
But there was something else brewing below his excitement. The fact was, he was nervous about the idea of his family traveling somewhere new. It felt so strange to him, the happy-go-lucky kid who always tried to be the life of his friends. To be nervous, to be uncertain, it felt strange.
Maybe it was the idea of not being home, and what home really was. One of his friends asked him why he didn't mind going to the deep sea, and he responded quickly in the fact that the deep sea was pretty much his home. He grew up traveling there, making friends with those down there just as much as his friends in the reef.
He didn't know anyone in the rivers and swamps.
He wanted to know them, but they weren't his home.
He was already feeling homesick and he hadn't even left yet. Pello took a moment to consider that thought, to consider why he couldn't have the other areas his home. Home wasn't one place, but the people that he surrounded himself with.
Originally, he was so excited with the idea of going to the rivers, especially when it was announced. Maybe it was a little fear. Fear he wouldn't find homes up there like he did in the sea. Fear that he wouldn't find friends to meet and play with. Fear that it would be one big disappointment.
Pello shook his head with determination. It wasn't right to be so down. This was an opportunity for him to really make a change with his life. He could show his friends in the deep sea that he was cultured, explored, and bring a little sea life to the uptight riverfolk and the bland swamp people. He was, afterall, pretty darn good at making friends with those around him.
Yes, this was a good thing. Being nervous, that was just a small little hiccup that could be overshadowed with his excitement. His family was going to travel to where the sea met the swamps. His sister was going to go on her first trip, to explore and learn new things and make friends herself. His parents were finally able to travel again with each other, and not in waves (pun intended) so they could watch the family. It seemed like only positives, and that his own feelings were not necessary. At least the negative ones.
He nodded, ready and determined to focus on the positive side of things and ensure that he went into things with the optimism he was known for. He was with his family, and that was his home. He'd make more homes with this trip, more friends and more family, and he knew that his worries were for naught. It would all work out in the end.
