Rowena was stirring a potion in her black caldron. As soon as she was done she bottled it up and put it on her top shelf and label it lucky juice. She sat down and looked at Rowen and seen that he was asleep. She started to stare out her window and she started to feel lonely. She realized that her life was boring. She would go on date but no one would satisfy her. She started to worry that she wouldnt find anyone to give her a child. She woke Rowen to get the mall next to him. He handed her a newspaper and the title the first article was about Orphans that are looking for forever home. A idea popped in her head. If she couldnt bare a child of her own she will find one. She read the article for information on how to contact the orphanage. She decided it would be a great idea to ge there herself. She woke Rowen and wrap his black scarf around him and she grabbed her black jacket and headed out to the orphanage. In her black carriage. When she arrived Rowen look confused and asked her what this. She explained everything to him and he became very excited. He always wanted someone else to play with. He didnt really enjoy sleeping all the time. The walked into the door a d she could hear the laughter of orher children running around. Some of the children even stopped to pet Rowen and gaze at him. He smiled and did a funny dance to make the children laughing, Rowena walked to a door the said office and please knock. Rowena knocked on the door and walked in.

RP Response:

With a rather unladylike grunt, Erwyna hefted the last box of small pumpkins onto the tables the orphanage director had allowed her to set up outside. The table tops were covered in plastic and atop that sat various paint brushes, stencils, a rainbow of paints, glitter, ribbons, and just about anything she could get her hands on at the craft store. She smiled widely as she looked at her work. The director had been kind enough to allow her to set up pumpkin painting as the activity for the freshlings under their care for the day and she couldn't have been happier. She loved children and when she had heard they needed extra help at the orphanage over the holidays she had beendeeplyf their first volunteers.

Now, as she and the director herded the children out the door and watched as they swiftly began to claim seats, her heart was filled with pride and an overwhelming amount of love that she wanted to give to each and every child before her. One in particular caught her eye as they stood back away from the others. Sharing a look with the director, she made her way forward, bending to speak with the small one that seemed frozen in place. “Hi there, little one,” she began with a soft smile, “is everything alright?” The child stared at her, clutching their stuffed animal close to their chest. She waited patiently, and even though she wanted to, she didn't stroke her fingers through their hair or rub her palm over their back. After a moment longer, the child shook their head. Her brows furrowed at their answer. “What's wrong?”

Again, the child stayed silent and simply stared at her for a moment. Their eyes moved to the tables full of other children and they clutched the plush tighter. “They make fun of me,” the child murmured softly.

The naiad frowned deeply before turning her pale golden gaze to the other children already elbow deep in paint and pumpkins. She knew the level of cruelty small children were capable of when not given the right direction. With a flourish, she stood once more, offering a hand to the child with a smile. “How about you sit with me, then?” Their eyes widened just a fraction at her proposal, but after a moment of consideration, they took her hand with a small nod. As she led the freshling to a pair of open chairs, she glanced down at them again. “Do you know why they make fun of you, sweetie?” After letting go of her hand, the child clambered up onto a chair and immediately pulled a pumpkin out of the crate in front of them. They nodded as they picked up a paintbrush. Sliding into the seat next to them, she frowned once more. “And why is that?”

“Because I'm different,” they answered while focused on the pumpkin before them. They dipped the brush in the open vial of black and began to go to work.

The naiad couldn't help the small snort that left her upon their answer. That was certainly no reason to pick on someone, but these children didn't seem to know any better. That combined with the utter loneliness they surely felt despite being surrounded by others probably fueled fires settled deep in their little hearts. Reaching out, she placed a hand on the child’s shoulder as she leaned closer to watch them bring their pumpkin to life. “Being different isn't such a bad thing,” she began, “Everyone is different, some more than others. Some of us are different on the outside and that scares people but looks aren't everything you know.” She smiled softly as the child looked up at her.

“Really?”

She nodded, “Mhm. As long as you're a good person in here,” she moved her hand and tapped their chest, just over their heart, which earned her a laugh, “people won’t give how you look a second thought.”

“But,” their brows furrowed as the brush stilled, “the other kids say I'm ugly.”

“Well then… I think the other kids all need glasses because you're certainly not ugly,” the grin the child gave her warmed her heart. “You know… They say when another kid picks on you that they like you. Maybe they all have crushes on you.” The look of appalling disgust that twisted the child's face made her bite her lip to hold back a laugh.

“That's gross!” They exclaimed before resuming their painting with a smile and a new twinkle in their eyes.

RP Response: Nebula had a child. She had a child and loved her very much. Pomona hadn’t been what she was excepting, but sometimes unexpected things were the most rare and wonderful treasures. Of course, having a child meant that there was a lot of room for error, so Nebula spent a lot of time on the internet trying to figure out things on how to make Pomona’s life better…and something that she read over and over again was that having a sibling was always good.

Pomona had a sibling, that was true but…Nebula hardly got to see Bellatrix, and somewhere wires must have gotten crossed that siblings only counted if the parent saw the both of them together…no matter how they interacted at the Academy.

While she would have liked more children of her own, imbuing stones right now would have taken a little longer than she figured on having…with Pomona already in school…no, she needed another child who was around the same age and that would foster…“Healthy Growth and Relationships” according to one website…and that sounded good enough to her.

It was difficult sometimes, not knowing if she was doing the right thing when it came to raising a child. Sometimes there were doubts, strange doubts which told her what she was doing was utterly illogical. How could a being who could not comprehend emotions hope to raise an emotionally stable child? Especially since her child was not a pure doll as she was…

She wished that she could be the one giving the boisterous laughter instead of the calm, quiet…often puzzled smile. She wished that she could be better equipped to handle the roller coaster of emotions that came with childhood…but she just wasn’t.

Nebula extracted the email file which she had written the day she had brought Pomona home, an email to the orphanage that she had written in a fit of confusion and alarm due to the child’s crying, an email which she had never sent and now she edited a few of the lines to better fit what she was trying to say.

Dear Reader,

My name is Nebula, and I have a child who I think is rather lonely. I am a Doll, and as such I have issues with understanding what my child is feeling. I did not expect motherhood to be quite this challenging; I did as much research as I could before entering in to imbuing, though now I am not sure that I did enough to cover all of the variables that come with raising another living being. I write to you today in hopes that you can help me.

I feel that my child is lonely and I would love to make an appointment to come in and find her a friend. Another child, someone else who can better understand her emotions, who can better share in her joy, her sorrows. A source of empathy to aid in her growth to be a more well rounded person. And I would like to help one of the children that you have become that type of well rounded person as well. According to what I have read online, and you will have to excuse me. I mean your establishment no disrespect, but if a child is raised in a “stable home” they are more likely to thrive. I would like to provide such a place.

I think you for your time in reading this. If you are interested in my proposal, please write me back and I can come to find the perfect child for me, and perfect sibling for my Pomona.

Best Regards,

Nebula

She read and reread the proposed email and finally hit the send button, feeling a knot somewhere in the region of her stomach. A strange feeling, one that she had to look up, taking a long time to get the right words in the search engine. Finally she decided that it might be apprehension. Either that, or she wanted it to be such.

All she could do now was wait. Wait and hope for a favorable answer.

RP Response:Carnelian was sure; she had to be.

She had been sent here to learn about magic and how to better herself. She was in no way overly gifted with her magical abilities, but her family wanted her to pursue great things. She had to leave her betrothed, though she didn't care much for them, before they were able to imbuing a stone. Her small family group had every right to expect her to come back with her new world knowledge and make a name for herself and add a child to their fold, but she was hesitant. She displayed magical prowess, that much was certain, but she still had doubts that she could adequately create a life with someone. Her nightmares since she learned of being paired off haunted her. In some, the stone failed to awaken as if it refused to accept her magic. As if she wasn't good enough. In others, her magic was sapped away and there was nothing to do to stop it as the stone still required more and more of her, slowly stealing her essence.

The Sluagh shook her head of these thoughts, eyeing the orphanage's sigh. She had thought to write a little, but who was to say it would actually reach them? Her little trust in strangers, even her peers, were nothing new of a Sluagh, but it also kept her isolated and rather lonely. Although Carnelian had been in school for what seemed like forever now, she still didn't have anyone she connected with.

Carnelian felt like she connected with children the most. They were still being molded into what they would become later on in life. Carnelian had an easier time trusting them, to a fault. She wasn't so easily doped by children, but she had a soft spot for them and raising a child would benefit them both. There would always be time to imbue if she was ever ready.
She walked up to the front desk, eyeing one of the helpers. "Carnelian." She said flatly. "I trust you've kept my appointment?" She felt a bit nervous, clearly uneasy with people judging her.

"Hm? Oh yes! You're early! Why don't we visit the children before we get started. They're out at recess now and the aides could use all the help they can get!" Cheerier words were never spoken, but they did little to ease her nerves as they continued forward. She worried that they might not deem her fit enough to adopt a child, but she'd never know until she tried.

Carnelian put on her bravest face; she was sure that this is what she wanted.

RP Response:

Col knew there were no unplanned children in Below. The concept of accidental stones didn't even make sense to him. But he was well aware that there were kids who were wanted and ones who weren't. Sometimes such sentiments were expressed simultaneously, with one parent desiring a child more than anything in the world in that moment and another running around imbuing stones for funsies... like his dad. The bakeneko who had helped to conceive both him and his half sister had done so on a trickster's whim, leaving the partners he'd been stringing along with two options once he had left them:

    1) raise their Hallowed child as normal, a daily reminder of their shame, or
    2) put that child up for adoption and pick up the pieces of their broken life.

    Both had chosen option two.

Coluthon understood, especially now that he was an adult, but he'd be damned if he wasn't going to try to be a father to as many unwanted kids as he was able, Hallowed or not. It wasn't that the orphanage was bad place to grow up, he just couldn't help thinking that having a parent or three would be way better. Would have been.

He had arranged a Haunted-Hallows-Hot-Chocolate-Tea-Party with a handful of kids this afternoon, and he arrived early to both set up the drinks and have the daycare assistants confirm that he wasn't covertly trying to poison anybody. After the cocoa and candy had checked out, Col arranged his cups around the tiny table. He took a seat on an equally diminutive stool once he was done and looked down at his clawed hands, surprisingly nervous for someone whose only aim was to please a bunch of toddlers. He remained quietly seated for a minute or two before he heard low voices and tappy little footsteps emanating from the hall. The door swung open, revealing a kirin caregiver and three small children. The first scurried over to the table, eyes wide.

"Is that choc'late?" she asked, grinning up at Col.

"It is. Want some?" He looked over at the other kids. "I've got tea and candy too, if you'd like."

"What kinda candy? What's yer name? Are you a Hallowed?" She stood on her toes and squinted, presumably in an effort to see him better. Col bent closer, dubbing her Question Girl in his head as he did. His hair was tousled artfully over his third eye today, but his pale, diamond pupils made it easy enough to confirm the answer to one of her questions before he even spoke.

"Grape and strawberry, Coluthon, and yes." He chose a miniature candy bar from the bowl and held it out for her.

"I want a berry one more."

    Of course she did.

The other two kids proved to be much less willful, though each was curious in their own way. Instead of posing questions, Smart Kid answered them, spouting intermittent facts about tea, their caregiver Miss Zeloa, even the stools beneath them. Huggy Boy just hugged. It was an entirely agreeable experience, just as babysitting Cardiff had been before it. Zeloa wrapped things up about a half an hour later when Huggy Boy started to nod off, and once the kids had said their goodbyes and were presumably back in their rooms, the kirin pulled Col aside.

"Great job today. The kids really took to you."

"That'll happen when a grownup comes bearing candy." He chuckled.

"True. Even so, I hope you're still considering adoption with us?"

"Oh... yeah! Definitely. If you'll have me, I'm—"

    "Mister Col!"

Question Girl pushed back into the room and ran to his side, tugging at the hem of his shirt to drag him down to her height.

    "I wanna give you somethin'!"

She reached into the front pocket of her overalls, pulled out a much-folded nugget of paper, and handed it over.

"Don't open it here," she whispered. "Issa secret."

    "I won't."

The girl wiggled her fingers at her caretaker. "Hi, Miss Zeloa."

    "Hello, Rhea. Run along now."

Question Girl scampered away, leaving Col alone with the kirin once more.

"We'll definitely keep you in mind, no matter what happens this year." Zeloa held out her hand, a small smile softening her businesslike exterior.

He shook back with a nod, slipping the freshling's note into his jacket. "Thanks. I look forward to being kept in mind." His lips curved into a smirk, the expression putting the barest of dents in his resting bitchface.

RP Response: Meztli was nervous, wringing his rather large hands together in front of him as he stood outside the orphanage. He had long since decided on wanting to become a foster or adoptive parent, but now that he was staring the building in the face his heart and mind were racing. He loved kids, was taking childcare classes at the community college. But he was infertile, and too shy to approach a battery for help. Besides, this way he could help a child that was already in the world. A child that someone didn't want after they had wakened their stone.

That thought got him moving toward the door. Who did something like that? If you imbued, you must have wanted a child, thought you were ready for the responsibility. He hadn't been an orphan, but his parents had all but left him to the care of the Academy care takers. Even now the best way to describe their relationship was 'cordial.' He didn't want that kind of relationship with someone who was supposed to be his family, but his parents were off traveling somewhere now that he was in college. Meztli sighed as he pulled the door open and slid inside. There were kids everywhere and he smiled at the sight. Watching kids play was one of his favorite things. They were so creative and imaginative. So enthusiastic.

One particular freshling wasn't quite watching where they were going and tripped over the end of his tail. "Oh, no! Are you alright, little one?" he asked softly, bending to help them up. The child nodded and looked up at him with wide eyes.

"I'm sorry!" they squeaked, looking almost frightened.

"No, no, it's okay, I should have kept my tail closer," Meztli chuckled and offered a smile. "I'm Metzli. What's your name?"

They were still a little tentative, but gave their name and relaxed a little. Meztli spent a few more minutes speaking with the child before they went off to play with their friends.

"I see you've met one of our darlings," came a voice from behind him. He turned to see a matronly Nightmare with a warm and affectionate smile on her face. "Are you looking to adopt?"

Metzli smiled as he straightened to face her. "Yes, please! I would love to," he answered. The nerves were gone, and only excitement was left now. He was looking forward to becoming a parent, eager for the responsibility and the experience.

RP Response:

Kali stood nervously on the steps in front of the orphanage. It wasn't the thought of adopting that had her hesitating to go in. No, it definitely wasn’t that, she had realized when hanging out with Onyx how lonely her life was. Ever since she was little her mutations often freaked the other children out, or they had bullied her. So when she had been pulled out to be home schooled, no one had kept in contact, and the friends she thought she had made in university hadn't bothered to contact her at all after university. It was okay though, she was used to people leaving her and the first impression she often got.

However she knew now that not everyone was like that, and with the knowledge that many her life wasn’t going to be lonely, well the silence was just getting to be too much. She wanted company. Someone she could love and understand, and well a friend. However it was a big decision and she still looked weird. Maybe she would scare them away. Maybe they would find her unfit in some way. Still if she sat there on the steps then nothing would change. She would never know if there was a child out there that she could have helped and made a part of her family. If it didn't work out, she wanted to know that she had tried her best. So with that she walked up and opened the doors.

As she walked in, she listened to the caretakers about the procedures she would go through, that adoption wasn’t guaranteed. They showed her around to the different rooms and where the children would often play. Eventually they led her into the room where their charges were currently doing arts and crafts. The children were making what seemed to be Bat streamers for the holiday.

After a little bit of urging by the caretaker Kali found herself walking over to sit down. The children were hesitant to approach her, and she chewed the inside of her cheek nervously asking for supplies to help them with the decorations. Only she kind of sucked and her first attempts… well they weren’t worth talking about.

One of the kids, who had been mostly by themselves chuckled and seemingly as if seeing Kali struggle made her less scary scooted over.

“No, No you don’t do it like that. You have to cut the paper like this, see” The child said taking Kali’s paper and showing her how it was done.

“Like this?” Kali repeated trying to do what she was shown. It looked more like a bat at least. The child burst out to giggles and showed her again.

“Do your teeth give you trouble?” they asked after the second attempt with bluntness that was often the case with children. The child had stopped what they were doing, intent on listening to Kali’s answer.

“Some times, I had problems talking when I was little” Kali admitted. They pondered her answer and nodded.

“They were scary at first, but you don’t seem really scary. Scary people don’t fail soo badly at making bat streamers. What’s your name, I’m Leif” They teased.

“I’m Kali. Pleased to meet you. Well truthfully I’m better at making pumpkins.” Kali replied. She took another streamer and made said pumpkins.

“Those are awesome. Teach me! Teach me please.” Leif replied. Kali did just that. As they tried making different haunted hallow type designs, the two started talking. Just about small things like their favorite color, and animals and what familiar was the best. The other kids seeing that leif was fine even joined in and added other haunted hallowed type things they should try making.

The time flew and Kali hadn’t realized she had spent the last four hours here. It was around this time that Leif mentioned they didn’t have too many friends at school because others thought they were weird. It was partly why he had come over.

“But it’s okay, the caretakers say it’s just because I haven’t found the right people yet. There will be people that don’t care, and will like me for me. Say Kali, will you come back tomorrow. Today was fun.” Leif admitted looking up with big eyes.

“I can try” Kali replied. Today was fun, and she definitely wanted to keep coming back. Maybe she wouldn’t be considered a good candidate for adopting anyone but that didn’t mean she couldn’t start volunteering. The children didn’t seem like they had many visitors after all. “No I’ll do better than try. I will come back. “

“Can you keep coming back forever? I won’t ask for you to adopt me or to try to take me home. I know some times things don’t work out but I think we can be friends. Nope… we are friends. So you gotta keep coming back forever and next time you gotta show me how to carve that castle jack-o-lantern you were talking about okay” Leif nodded like it was all decided.

“Well I don’t know about forever, that’s a long time” Kali said lightly. ‘but I’ll try my best, in what ever form I can.” The smile Leif gave was worth it.
