We've all been fauxed. The diglett is actually a very shy creature that spends most of its day digging beneath the ground for food. What we see above the ground is actually its extendable tail as illustrated in the figure above.
Working together by digging in three different directions, the moment one of the dugtrio members discover something worthwhile, it will use its tail to communicate this to the other two following which the other two members can then retrace their steps back to where all three tails were originally and then make their way together down the tunnel that their companion had made to reunite with it.

The source of the dugtrio. That was the question that had plagued poke-scientists for years. Though many had made half-hearted attempts at getting to the source, a brutal combination of lack of funding and lack of specimens had doomed efforts for years. Finally, the Alolan lab had what they needed: A private donor just as curious as they were, and a dugtrio that seemed a bit less ornery than the rest.
They started their investigation. Digging was involved, of course. They kept the dugtrio immobilized not by drugs, but by a rotating cast of undergraduates feeding it whatever array of poffins and berries would keep it entertained. In many ways, they had the easiest job. For the rest, the endless digging was almost as brutal as the search for funds had been.
And so they dug. The body of the dugtrio extended almost vertically underground at first, but soon slanted away in an arc, parallel to the ground. The portion of the body underground was indistinguishable from the part above. The scientists could find no discernible morphologic changes that implied they had found the main body, and so they kept digging.
The body of the dugtrio extended across their campus, across their island, and even underneath the ocean floor. The frazzled scientists begged for more funding and collaborations across the sea, and the research was doubled. Soon, scientists and their hapless grad students on the mainland were tracking the body of the same dugtrio, seemingly stretched in and endless path beneath the surface of the earth. Though the project was initially ignored, media attention slowly brewed. What would they find at the end of the dugtrio? Did it even have an end? Were the scientists endlessly trapped in a cycle of digging, seeking funding, and digging?
It was when they tunneled beneath Diglett Cave that they finally found a change. The dugtrio body was no longer running parallel to the surface, but arcing upwards. Sensing the end to their mission was near, the grad students dug with increased vigor. Upwards and upwards they went, finally reaching the surface and finding...
Another dugtrio.
"Dugtrios Are Two-Faced!" cried the media. "Could the vast dugtrio network be used as a new method of communication?" said others. To these statements, the scientists could only sigh in relief. Their mission was over... and it was time to look for funding for another project.
