Scarlett chuckled lightly as Zak reminded her that he had won the basketball game. "Yes, yes ya did." She admitted fully, not a trace of sarcasm or irritation in her tone. "Give me anotha couple'a games though, and that might change, since I'll be learnin' from the best." She suggested with a light smile. "Ya really are a wonder on that court though. Be honest, did you ever go all out on me, or did ya end up holdin' back the whole time?" She asked curiously, leaning forward with interest. The subject of basketball was a far more pleasing one than the earlier topics of conversation. She really had enjoyed the game. If only all of their interactions were so simple and carefree.... Scarlett knew it was impossible, given how they were both complex individuals and by virtue of that, they couldn't just.... Be simple.
Though on the topic of basketball, Zak seemed to remember the other part of his reward, and Scarlett raised an eyebrow. So he did remember after all. "Ya do recall correctly, I just wasn't sure ya were interested, since ya deadn't seem ta bealieve me when we talked about it last time." She pointed out. Not only that, but he had even seemed annoyed, and when she mentioned the book as part of his reward, she didn't get any hint of interest towards the book specifically, and given they were already in rough waters with each other, she hadn't wanted to push it. Standing and stretching, she motioned for Zak to follow her to the study so that she could retrieve the book.
She was surprised that he wasn't thinking of any more tests or rewards for her though, since he had commented on wanting to keep her strong. However, it seemed she was strong now, in his opinion. "That's news ta me." She murmured neutrally, not sure if she should feel flattered or suspicious. Honestly she did feel a little of both. She wasn't on his level yet, given that he had six consecutive badges, and she had four. He probably wanted to keep that distance between them, plus he was right, she hadn't needed extra motivation. Even if he hadn't promised her a reward for four badges, she would have gone and done it anyways. It was certainly nice to reap extra rewards though. "Fair enough." She agreed, though she still felt the need to express some disappointment. Even if he understandably didn't want to reward her for more badges, she still would have liked to do more fun things like playing basketball. Her lamentation earned an ambiguous, probably sarcastic apology as he suggested he might try to think of something later. "Alright, just let me know if anythin' comes to mind." She said amicably.
As they reached the study, Scarlett opened the door and let herself in, eyes scanning the lines of books in their shelves. She was fairly certain it was here, but she couldn't remember exactly. It could have also been in the small collection in her room, she would just have to look through the organized chaos she kept everything in. At first glance, the books didn't seem to be sorted in any particular order, but there was a method to the madness, one only Scarlett knew. It was quite literally a matter of simply knowing where certain books were placed, in an arrangement Scarlett came up with based on feelings and piles of where she thought things ought to go. She worked her way around the room sporadically, glancing from one bookshelf to another and moving her finger to hover over a shelf from a large distance before finally exclaiming "Hah, there ya are...." She muttered, stepping forward to pull the somewhat large leather bound book out of the shelf. "Here it is... However, if I recall correctly, there was a little mare to my reward too, and I never ended up getting it...." She pointed out playfully. "Come on, I'll trade ya. Reward far reward. It's only fair." She insisted amiably, holding the book up lazily by her head.

Zak smirked a little as she gave his ego a little stroke and admitted to his victory again. It wasn't even necessary that she do that. She could have rolled her eyes or scoffed or make some comment to try and disregard it or play it down, but she didn't. She admitted it. Annnnd she complimented him further. His expression turned playfully, and jokingly, suspicious. "Mishka, first alcohol, now flattery? Are you sure you're not trying somesing, bringing me on zis boat of yours?" he teased lazily. He gave a low chuckle, but then shrugged a little,r olling his shoulders into the gesture and straightening up some. "Couldn't say," he answered quite honestly. It was clear he wasn't being ambiguous or secretive. "Vone can't really go all out eef zere not pushed to et, and et's hard to even try eef I'm not playing both sides of ze court," he elaborated, "I can tell you I vasn't really holding back or consciously restraining myself much by ze end, zough." He flashed her a lackadaisical sort of smirk-smile, in a "You should be honored by that", kind of way. Especially for a first timer, she had done quite well.
Zak gave a misleadingly nonchalant shrug to Scarlett's comment on his 'interest' in the second half of his reward. He... was, honestly, but he certainly didn't want to give it away. He didn't want her to think anything had change. If anything, he would play it off as curiosity. He was an intellectual, curious person... even if he "didn't believe" what she said, he was still interested to find out where she got the information to begin with. "I feegure et's vorse reading. Eef only to know vhat you're kvouting," he replied easily. Lying, practically second nature to him. At least, when he was in the right state of mind. Surprisingly.... sometimes he could be a bad liar, but that was very, very rare, and took a lot to stir him up to that point.
He raised an eyebrow at her mutter, but didn't quite catch it, or perhaps didn't care to comment. He took a final drink of his beer and set it down, with little left in it, taking a stand as she got up to lead the way. He followed her to the study, looking around much like he had when he first boarded her ship. He brought his gaze back to her when she spoke up, quirking an eyebrow, but straightening some as he realized she'd been talking to the book. Not judging. He stepped forward, but frowned when she started playfully requesting a 'trade'. He wasn't sure why, but that rubbed him the wrong way. Normally it wouldn't. Normally he'd smirk and play along or get closer, teasing back before taking the book himself. He wasn't feeling it, though. He wasn't feeling any of that lightness, or thrill, or playfulness. He wasn't sure why. Maybe work was weighing on him... maybe he was tired. Maybe it was that spending time with her felt like a constant roller coaster and he hadn't really gotten a break from this ride. Maybe it was a combination of everything, or maybe... it was something else. Either way, it only took a few seconds for his expression to give away that he wasn't amused. He remained very still for, probably, only a few seconds, but it seemed like much longer. "I'm not en ze mood, Mishka." He swept over, taking the book from her, turning, and heading back to the main cabin. His voice wasn't even it's usual low, annoyed growl. It was flat. Almost tired, but... was that what it was? Wary? It wasn't like he knew what he was feeling, let alone someone else being able to figure it out. Whatever was going on, he obviously didn't feel like sharing; by the time he got back to his seat, he was already looking through the book.
Of course, it didn't take him very long to notice something was off. He flipped through the book and grabbed his beer to take a drink, but before he could actually sit down, he stopped. He finished the beer, then set it aside, still absently looking through the pages while he waited for Scarlett to join him. "Mind eef I borrow zis, Mishka?" he asked absently. It was in some strange language, something he definitely didn't understand, but he didn't want to sit here learning the language or having Scarlett translate for him. It would be better to just scan it in and have his computer translate it.

Scarlett smirked as Zak suggested with alcohol and flattery, she most certainly seemed to try something with bringing him to her boat. "Hey, I just call it how I see it." She suggested with a smile and a shrug. "If ya think that's flattery well... That's surprisin'ly modest of ya." She chuckled, taking another sip of her water before asking if he ever actually went all out on her. His initial answer was a bit disappointingly vague, but as he thought more and elaborated, suggesting that he wasn't consciously restraining himself by the end though, she smiled having gotten the answer she was looking for. "Great, tha's all I needed ta hear." She nodded, noting his cocky smile with a grin. She was honored. She knew she wasn't as much of a challenge as a pro would prove to be, but she at least wanted to make sure he wasn't bored and babying her the whole time like he'd been at the beginning.
When he explained his reasoning behind asking for the book, Scarlett found the answer acceptable. She was still a bit irritated that he didn't believe her, or if he did, he wouldn't admit to it. All her life she'd been fighting with her father to prove that these legends held some truth to them after all, but she refused to let Zak get to her like that again, and calmly stood to go with Zak to find the book. When she teased him for not giving her other half a reward though, his reaction was surprisingly volatile. She had expected him to take the book without giving her anything, certainly, but she'd also expected him to do it in a much more charming and flirtatious manner like usual. Sure, things had been tense earlier, but they always bounced back quickly. Except.... Zak wasn't bouncing back. Scarlett had to stand there for a moment, stunned. What the hell was that? Not in the mood? He'd been playful earlier hadn't he, teasing her about flattery and how she had yet to give him his other reward. Arceus, he was acting so.... Weird, lately....
Turning to follow Zak out of the room, Scarlett half expected him to storm out of the door, but instead he sat back down in his seat on the couch and looking through the book she'd handed him. Scarlett didn't move to sit with him just yet, instead leaning against the wall with her arms folded as she scrutinized him. There were a lot of things she wanted to say to him, but now she was completely at a loss. Why was he allowed to ask for his reward, but she wasn't? Hell, she wasn't even being entirely serious about the trade, but even so, this double standard was really getting on her nerves. He could do something like flirt, but if she reciprocated, he would get irritated. He could remind her teasingly of his other reward, but if she did the same, even jokingly, he stormed off. What was going on with him....? She continued to stare quietly, feeling almost..... Concerned. Not even about their relationship, but for Zak himself. What was frustrating was that she should have wanted to grab her book and kick him out of her ship and yelled at him, but instead, did the opposite. She moved closer after giving him some space, sitting down in the chair next to him so that there was still some separation, but she could see where he was. No more games, no more messing around, she would just give him what he wanted to appease him for now, since something was clearly troubling him.
Given his mood, or whatever was going on with him, it might have taken him a moment to notice that the book was written in another language as he looked through it. Once he seemed to realize this, or notice her presence, he asked to borrow the book, which was surprisingly polite of him given the irritable way he'd just taken the book and brushed her off earlier. Frustration continued to stew over Scarlett, knowing that something was wrong, but she couldn't even ask him about it probably without him snapping at her. "Sure. This was written in Old English, since that was the language at the time the record of the first enigrake was created." She explained, her accent dropped at this point. "There are translated versions, but I always get copies of the original texts since translation depends on someone else's judgement on certain words, whereas with the original text, you can look it over and decide for yourself to compare." She reached over, flipping a few pages back and running her finger under a few words. "I can give you a rough summary if you'd like though, and you can fact check me later to make sure I'm giving you the real thing." She offered quietly, but this was starting to seem like more than just a curiosity if he wanted to take it with him and translate it on his own instead of asking her to do it.

Zak was unfortunately past the much more fun banter and flirting from earlier. He was focused on the book, now that it was in his hands, even though he wasn't able to read it. It didn't seem to phase him too much; he asked to borrow it, and while he waited for a response, he continued with looking through the pictures available. He was quiet a moment further even after Scarlett had finished, glancing at her briefly only when she reached in to touch the book herself. He pulled away and closed it, not in a snippy, short, or even combative way, but simply in conclusive manner. Scarlett wasn't all that surprised by Zak's answer, but she crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair. "Must be some good scanner you'll be using then." She suggested vaguely. Most machines gave literal word for word translations because it was almost impossible to teach a program all the possible hidden meanings and phrases of the time period. Language was something Scarlett took as seriously as archeology, since the two went hand in hand as huge parts of history. If Zak wanted to go run her book through a translator and ignore her expertise entirely because he thought it would be a waste of time, then it was no skin off her nose. He was just setting himself up to fail though, if he actually planned on following some of the book's advice word for word. She quirked a brow when he insisted he liked reading. "Well I suppose that makes sense. You've proven you're the intellectual type after all." She suggested, and though it might have seen like a compliment, her tone didn't indicate as such. She didn't understand what he was doing, flashing her a smile and acting like nothing was wrong after the way he'd been acting.
He was still being weird too. Arceus, it was bugging her, and when he asked if there was anything else to show him while he was here, she narrowed her eyes lightly, but kept her voice calm. "Only a nice view if you're willing to go for a cruise." She suggested, responding to his question as it was, no flirting, no innuendo. No, she had nothing else to really show him, but she sure did have a lot of questions.

Zak didn't really look back at Scarlett, but he did give an odd, short little tilt of his head. He was quiet a moment. "Eef I have any kvestions, Mishka," he drawled, finally turning his head just a bit to glance at her out of the corner of his eye, "I'll ask." It was hard to tell whether he somehow picked up on what she meant, or just got the gist of it, or if he was just trying to put the subject to an end-- or some combination of the three. It was starting to become clear, though, that he wasn't too keen on lingering on the subject any longer. He turned away, then rolled his eyes a bit at her comment, or rather, her tone. He was definitely leaning towards leaving at this point. In fact, he was already doing a mental check -- and physical, to some degree, as he checked his pockets to make sure he had everything and hadn't set something down -- to make sure he wasn't forgetting something before he left.
At her... 'suggestion', though, he did pause. He fell still, then finally turned, more so, to look at her. His expression seemed to be searching, reading her, as if trying to figure out what she was getting at without having to ask. Finally, though, his eyes narrowed, and his expression became more questioning-- he wasn't going to say it, but he was clearly looking for some kind of response-- whether it was an explanation, a clarification, or a dismissal.

Scarlett looked out the window and said nothing as Zak tensely insisted that if he had any questions, he would ask. She had been trying to use a neutral tone so that it came off more complimentary and less confrontational, but clearly it hadn't worked well with her own frustrations and Zak's pissy mood, so she ignored his comment and dropped the subject with silence. He caught his eye roll in her peripheral vision at her comment on him being the intellectual type though. Oops, had her sarcasm slipped through too much for his prima donna complex? Instead of engaging though, she continued to give the window a withering scowl until Zak asked if there was anything else left to show him before he left, but honestly all Scarlett had left to offer was a cruise, though the suggestion only seemed to earn her a skeptical look from Zak. It was met with Scarlett looking at him with a neutral expression, then arching a brow. There was no hidden meaning, there was nothing for him to figure out. She sure as hell wasn't flirting again if that's what he was concerned about. Finally, Scarlett sighed and stood, putting some distance between them again. "I would like, to go sailing. Do you want to see how she runs on the water, or not?" She explained slowly, restraining impatience from bleeding into her tone since she felt that her suggestion had been pretty straightforward, and Zak wasn't some idiot who needed things spelled out for him, but it seemed that's what she needed to do here.
Under normal circumstances, sure, there probably would be something suggestive in her words, but after his little display earlier, she was almost annoyed that he even suspected anything else from her offer. As if she was going to try anything when he'd been pretty damn clear he wasn't in the mood. She wasn't that thick, or desperate. If he wanted her to back off with the flirting then all he had to do was ask, but the mixed messages and double standards weren't helpful, and she didn't appreciate being snapped at for reciprocating his flirting. "It's a nice stress reliever, standing on the deck with the wind in your hair and nothing but the sea. I dunno. Sometimes I like to watch the city shrink away, and I can feel all my concerns and frustrations shrinking with it." She elaborated with a shrug. If he didn't like her offer, he could get the hell off her boat so that she could at least go for a cruise and enjoy the cool ocean air without his miserable a** bogging the mood down, she thought stubbornly, but in truth, part of her still felt concerned over Zak's weird behavior. If a cruise would help him relax, then she was all for it, since this certainly wasn't any fun.

Zak didn't look at Scarlett when she moved-- or well, he did, but his gaze lowered. It wasn't a gesture; it looked as if he was actually looking at something, something between them, even though there was nothing there but space. His gaze slid off to the side, his hand placed in his pocket as he shifted his weight to one side. He seemed to be... considering it? That, or he was annoyed and not really answering. There was just enough hints of thoughtfulness, though, that it was most likely the former. He looked back at Scarlett as she continued, elaborating a bit. This time he closed his eyes, but when he opened them just a moment later, he gave a shake of his head that pretty much answered for him.
All the same... "Nyet. I should get back. I... appreciate ze offer, zough, Mishka," he replied. His expression, and his voice, were hard to figure out. He was lucky Lidia wasn't there, because she had a tendency to smack (or even slap) him when he was being this ambiguous and broody. He was mostly trying to stay... neutral, though. He felt like he had a lot buzzing around in his head, but like it was on... mute. He couldn't grasp any of it, but he couldn't sort or settle or organize himself, either. He couldn't focus; he was all over the place. And he could tell his attitude was starting to rub off (or just affect) Scarlett. It was better he left. Besides... he had work to do, too.
He grabbed the book up and glanced back at Scarlett, holding it up in a gesture. "I'll let you know vhen I'm done vis zis. Eef you're stayeng en ze area... Scarlett could feel eyes on her, even though Zak technically wasn't looking at her, there was a feeling, something discomforting that still lingered thickly between them as she explained that she was offering him a ride in the boat, no tricks, no games, just a ride. When her offer was initially met with silence, she cast a curious glance at the Russian just as he shook his head, thanking her for the offer but insisting that he needed to get back. It was.... Hard to tell if he was being sincere or not, but still disarming nonetheless. She nodded slowly in reply, it was really the only way she could think to respond. She wanted so badly to ask what was going on with him. She wished she could, but she wouldn't, both because Zak wouldn't tell her, or would get defensive, and because she part of her wanted to be angry with him for his weird and standoffish behavior, even though she knew she wasn't. That was what made it more frustrating. She watched as he stood, suggesting that he would let her know when he was done with the book. "I don't know if I'll be staying or not just yet. I do have some work of my own to do, but...." She shrugged again. "Why don't you just let me know when you're done with it and I'll come pick it up, or you can come give it to me?" She suggested. That left the time and place of the transfer a bit more open and flexible at least.

Vandal gave Mila a simpering smile as she insisted that there was no need to apologize and that he had been a big help. He didn't necessarily believe her, but it was still a little reassuring at least. She even got a little chuckle out of him with the rest of her ramblings about entertaining her and the like. "It was my pleasure." He insisted with a soft smile, though as Mila drew near suddenly, he tensed, frozen once her lips had touched his cheek. He certainly hadn't expected that, but if the warm fuzzy look on his face was any indication, he certainly wasn't complaining as he lightly touch the cheek she had kissed. "O-oh, right.... Heh..." Scarlett watched Zak calmly as he messed with the arrangement of his team, seeming to agree to her suggestion of a more flexible book return plan for the both of them. However, as he looked at her again, she couldn't help but tense. Granted, it wasn't very visible or obvious, but she could feel the muscles in her body tighten with apprehension. She wasn't expecting him to say or do anything, but rather she didn't know how to feel about the way in which he looked at her. She felt almost.... Vulnerable, and Arceus knew she didn't like that. She did her best not to show any reaction though. The most that would show would be a slight rigidness to her otherwise relaxed demeanor. "Yeah." She responded with a curt, forced neutrality as Zak suggested he would keep in touch, looking to the window again to avoid looking at Zak any more. The weird tension she had been feeling throughout his visit had hit it's peak, and then dissipated immediately the moment Zak left the ship. Scarlett let out a sigh of relief and irritation, feeling like she could breathe again at long last. Arceus... Just what the hell was that all about? She had asked that question in her mind probably a hundred times by now, and each time she asked herself and didn't get an answer, she grew more frustrated.
She was an archeologist, a treasure hunter, a problem solver. It bugged the hell out of her when she didn't have answers or solutions, but some mysteries were just never meant to be solved. Zak was one of those mysteries, but Scarlett couldn't help but feel compelled to try and solve it anyways. It was something she loved about him, but at times like these, she could only feel irritation. Not to mention that look.... That last glance he gave her was really throwing her off. He had to be playing mind games. Yeah. That was it. That had to be the answer... Mind games for insulting his lack of leverage over her. There was no way he was actually feeling some kind of emotional turmoil or whatever seemed to have taken hold of the Russian. She'd never seen him be this moody, but then again this was... What, their fourth meeting....? "....That's it. ******** this. I need a drink." She mumbled, exasperated, turning to make for the bar. "I would not recommend consuming alcoholic beverages at this point in time Captain." Scarlett stumbled backwards in surprise as she was suddenly faced with her porygon z. "Arceus damn Cy!!! Warn a gal b'fare ya go appearin' outta nowhere." She scolded, straightening up and holding a hand over her chest, as if the gesture would calm her fluttering heartbeat.

"My apologies, Captain, however I feel that I should remind you of our prior objective, put on hold due to the Renaissance Festival." Scarlett sighed. Right, the unown in Soleceon Ruins. She still had a living collection to finish.... "I'm aware. What does that have ta do with drinkin'?" She muttered. "It would be difficult to travel while inebriated, Captain." Cypher advised. "Who says we're going back to the ruins ta'day? I ain't even heard back from Vandal yet, can't move with half my team gone off on a mission, so ifn I'm gonna be forced to sit here with nothin' but you an' my thoughts, I'd like to drown out the noise with alcohol, ifn ya daen't mind." She sneered, attempting to move around Cypher, only to be blocked by the porygon z again. "Oi. Move." Scarlett snarled, no longer feeling up to humoring the porygon. "My apologies, Captain, but I do mind, for the sake of your safety and wellbeing." Scarlett shot him a glare. "I really need to add sarcasm into yer language programming. I wasn't askin' far yer opinion 'er analysis." Cypher was unswayed by Scarlett's volatile attitude. "I'm perfectly capable of understanding sarcasm, Captain. I simply choose to ignore it's implications, and again I must insist that you refrain from drinking any more than you have already." Scarlett gave the persistent porygon another heated glare. "Why?" She demanded. "I believe the correct terminology is.... You are a lousy drunk." Scarlett quit struggling and blinked, arching a brow. This was a first. "Since when do you care....?"
