“I already know what I want to be!” Came the very loud shout from inside the little house. The owner was angry and losing her patience fast. The second voice that joined in seemed to be equally as angry and fed up with the discussion they were having.
Akeldama and her Alkidike mother were at it again. Just one of the many times in a day that they ended up arguing over small things. Ciriet was trying to get her daughter to explore all the options that were laid out in front of her before she committed to something for life. Unfortunately, the red headed Elaria was not having it. Her mind was made up and no one was going to change it for her. Not even her high strung mother.
“I told you already. I want to be a Sacred Heart not some common Amazon. Do I look common to you?” The grey girl crossed her arms in front of her small chest and glared at the yellow skinned woman in front of her. “I’m going to use a spear and I’m going to protect my sisters. I don’t want to use a stupid bow. I won't hide in the shadows to take out my enemy.” Akel knew that her mother wanted her to try to use the longer range weapon because it was what she favored but it wasn’t for her. Her aim was all wrong for that.
Ciriet tried yet again to reason with the child but when she got nowhere she gave a loud frustrated sound and turned away from her daughter, waving her hands in the air to dismiss everything. In fact, the woman walked away and into her own room so that she wouldn’t have to deal with the stress any longer. She wanted only the best for her young one but was meeting a stone wall instead. It seemed to boggle her mind that the child in question could be so stubborn. Not that she had any question as to where that stubbornness came from.
Akel took this as a win for her and grinned in triumph at the retreating back of her caretaker. She even thought about doing a little dance. Then once Ciriet was out of view she made a turn on her own heels, only she was on her way out the door not to her room to pout. She wanted to get out of the house. Why couldn’t the old woman understand that she knew what she wanted already? Despite the Elarian girl being a young prentice she knew what her life had in store for her. She’d known since she was a young thing that she had wanted to use the spear and that she wanted to be one of the most respected members in the tribe. So what was the problem? Did her mother not think that she could accomplish it?
Was knowing what she wanted really so bad? Did it hinder her in some way that she was unaware of? No, that couldn’t be it. Akeldama took a deep breath of fresh air when she emerged from the small house and smiled at the crispness. There was a last glance given with her pure green eyes, more so checking to see if Ciriet would make another appearance, and then she was off. The redhead wanted to get some running in before the sun truly set over the horizon and made the village dark. After all, she needed to be in top condition if she wanted to reach her goal. Which was funny to her because not so long ago she could remember complaining about the amount of training others did. Now she was almost certain she did just as much if not more.
A shared habit of the Elaria sisters. Something that was learned at a young age and continued on through their later years. They had to be the best. The fastest. The strongest. Just better all around. Why? Because they were the future. They were what the world had been working toward. Akel loved hearing that. It brought pride to her. And to all others she was sure.
As her feet hit the ground hard she made sure to keep her breathing as even as possible. When she had become old enough to truly have say over her hair and clothes she had made sure that she wore little and that her hair was short and it never went up. Less for an opponent to get hold of and use against her. Of course she still made sure that she looked good. There was no way she was going to walk around looking horrible and/or unkempt. Akel didn't need to sacrifice looking good in order to be practical or functional.
As she continued to run she tried to think about what her future had in store for her. Apart from the obvious. She would progress in her training just like the rest of her sisters. The daughters of Elzira would become stronger together. But she wondered what her love life would end up like. If she even had one. Her Alkdike mother didn’t have a partner. Something that made her think that that was the reason Ciriet was so pushy and bitter; she had no one else in her life to focus her attention on. Would she end up that way as well? Would she become an old cranky spinster that sought Elzira for a child only to become a stubborn mother? It certainly wasn't a fate she looked forward to.
“Ugh, I certainly hope not. I like Kanika enough.. Maybe..?” She had to think about that. The girl had been someone that Akeldama had deemed as special from the first time they had met. However, she was unsure if that level of special meant that there was anything beyond friendship there. "Or not.." Akeldama wasn't ready to explore that just yet. In fact she had to wonder if she would ever be ready.
There was a moment in her mind where she really gave it thought. Still, no definitive answer popped out. So she let the thought sit there in the back on some dark shelf to be brought forward later. Maybe when she was closer to her goal of becoming a Sacred Heart she’d ask Kanika about it. Or maybe someone else would become special to her in that amount of time, one never knew. For now she wanted to put all her energy into getting stronger.
“I will get Ciriet to see that I don’t need to try other things.” She told herself. Akel wasn’t exactly sure how she was going to get that done but there had to be a way to get through to her hard headed mother. Perhaps she could speak to another Sacred Heart and see if there was a better way to go about telling her mother what she wanted. Or she could go to the Matron. Or she could ignore the woman altogether and just do as she wanted.
In the end she settled on finishing up her exercise then going to speak to Elzira. That would give her more clarity than any other solution would.

"Come on Yava, keep up!" Akel called back to her mainland familiar as she ran through the trees. "You can do it little bug."
She had to move from side to side to avoid colliding with one of the many trunks since there was no straight path for her to take through the woods. Her Maglardilla chittered as it glided along occasionally having to stop and grab onto the trunk of one of the trees before pushing off and gliding again to the next. It was the only way for the beast to stay aloft rather than fall to the ground and have to run. Akeldama peeked over her shoulder to see where her pet was in terms of keeping pace but quickly looked forward again so she didn't collide with a tree. Running blindly through the forest was a bad idea unless one wanted to meet the trees personally. Something that she wasn't so willing to do.
"You can do it Yava! Speed is everything." Or at least it was for something so small. Since her familiar lacked in size and strength she wanted to make sure it had speed and agility on it's side. Akel might not like that Yava was from the main land but she didn't want it to get hurt. After all, it was hers now and what was hers was to be cared for. "Try pushing off just a little harder next time." She yelled over her shoulder.
The Elaria was running at her full speed to help the Maglardilla train. They had been at it for most of the morning and while her goal was to have Yava catch her she would settle for the little bug just not falling behind. When the sound of chittering grew louder she grinned to herself. That meant that her beastly bug was gaining ground. Either from it's own speed or Akel slowing down. She had no idea which it was. There was a distinct cramping in her side that told her she was pushing her own limits and she welcomed that pain but she knew she would need to stop for water soon. While she wanted to be fit she didn't relish the idea of passing out. Not only would it leave her exposed in the woods but if one of her sisters or cousins happened upon her like that she would be ridiculed. Not something she could have. Nor did she think she would be able to face it.
So when there was a screech from her pet that told her it was happy she slowed her pace just a little, hoping to find out what it was that made the little bug so pleased. Then little feet were wrapping around her shoulders and feelers were probing her antennae. Akeldama laughed and reached back to pet the beast's head as she finally stopped running.
"Good job Yava! You caught me." The girl huffed out between breaths.
Even though their exercise was done she didn't stop moving. Rather than pant in on place she walked to help her body cool down as well as to regulate her heart rate. It was pounding still, trying to keep up with the moving limbs that had been going so fast, and she needed it to slow to a calm rhythm. As Yava clung to her and screeched and chittered with excitement Akel continued to pat it's head and walk slowly back to the village. They could both use a drink. And possibly a treat for all the hard work they had put in.
"Don't worry, we'll have you trained to be a beast of battle yet." She commented to her pet.
It was her hope that she could train Yava to be a bit more formidable so that she could get some use of the bug during fights. Even if all the insect could do was distract her opponent with it's speed. She wanted to have the upper hand if it came down to it. Though most people would see what she was trying to do as cheating she saw it only as utilizing what she had at her disposal. Next she would need to train the small familiar how to avoid weapons. After all, it would do her no good if Yava were struck down by someone with lesser skills than she. It would also look bad on her if such a thing were to happen. It would mean that her beast was weak and her beast was a reflection of her.
Akeldama needed to make sure that her insect was in top condition. Even if it didn't have the physical power of some of the other familiars it could still be powerful in other ways.

"Akeldama I am serious. You should start thinking about the future." Ciriet said as she stared at her daughter with a stern expression. As a mother she wanted to take away as much stress as she could and if she had to arrange for her child to be with someone so that she could focus on other, more important things then she would do just that.
Akel had her arms crossed over her chest. The training part she understood. All Elaria were doing it. They were strong. Meant for battle. Fierce. What she didn't get was why her mother was trying to talk her into possible matches. What good would that do her? She had plenty of time to consider who to be with in the future. Besides that Kanika had been her main choice so far. Though she had considered Tos. The only problem with getting romantically involved with Tos was that she would then lose the best friend that she could tell all to. So if they were together she couldn't gripe about relationship issues to her since it would be about her. In the long run Akel had deemed that she liked having a friend in Tos more than a partner.
"There are plenty of girls in the village for you to choose from now. And Maliva just received two blooms from Elzira. We can make an arrangement for one of those to be your partner." It seemed that Ciriet wanted to make all the plans for her daughter's life. Mostly because she didn't want her child to have to worry about or be distracted by anything so mundane as love and partnership. "Once we make a match then you will only need to focus about your training. So nothing will get in the way of you being among the best."
Akel turned her head away from her mother, not wanting to look at her. She had just suggested that she make a partnership with a bloom. While she might not be that much older than the girl inside she still didn't like the idea. Mostly because she didn't want someone forced to be with her. That was never a good idea. What if they didn't get along? Plus it was like robbing the girl of her future before she even had a chance to leave Elzira's bosom. "I am fine without a partner. I can worry about such things later." Since getting Yava she hadn't been too worried about all of that stuff anyways. It was all training and hardly any play. She wanted her familiar to be obedient as well as strong and she needed to be as well if she wanted to be worthy of such a thing from the beast she called hers. Not to mention she was trying to ensure the Maglardilla's survival on Yael.
"No. Worrying about those things later in life can take your focus away from what matters. You need to be strong. If we take this off the table then there will be no need to think about it later or ever." The alkidike leveled her gaze at her gray skinned daughter. "We can't hope that one of the original or even the mystic will look your way but we can still get someone in the first generation to be your match. That will give you status." Her voice had taken on a more stern tone. Ciriet, it seemed, wanted to make sure that her daughter got the message as well as a secured position among the elders when the time came.
"Excuse me?" Now Akeldama was staring at her mother with a gaze that could turn a beast to stone. "Am I not good enough for the originals? Or the mystic?" She would never dare to assume that Nivalis would look her way but she didn't think she was unworthy of the mystic. And she'd only met two of the first three Elaria that her mother tree had produced but again she didn't think she was unworthy of them. She was just as worthy of them as they were of her. Akeldama had been born of Elzira just as they had been and she was in the first generation of the Elaria. Sure she might not have started to train as early as they had but she could hold her own if the situation called for it. "Who is to say I want any of them!?" She was more upset with her mother for thinking that she could never reach that high than against being with any of the earlier mentioned girls. "What use do I have for status? I will be strong with or without a partner of such repute!" She was shouting at the tall woman now. Her body had started to quiver as her anger was reaching it's boiling point.
"Do not take that tone with me. You know full well that they are out of your league." Ciriet placed her hands on her hips and glared. "The matron likely wouldn't allow for you to come within fifteen feet of the mystic if she thought you were trying to woo her." Not that she could blame the Matron. As a mother she would do the same thing to anyone she thought was unworthy of her daughter.
The alkidike shook her head then and lifted a hand to silence her child. "I'll hear none of it Akeldama. I will make a list of good matches for you and we will pick one together." The way she brushed Akel's protests off seemed to suggest that she was done with the argument altogether.
The Elaria gritted her teeth and moved to the wall where her practice weapon was leaning. "No, mother, we will not. If anyone gets to pick my partner it's me or Elzira herself. Do you understand?" Akel snatched her spear and faced the woman with her shoulders back and her chin up in defiance. "Not you. Never you. I'm going to train and I'll pretend this conversation never happened." It was all she could offer the woman. She might have raised Akel as her own but she was never really her mother. The only one that could claim that place was Elzira. The more Ciriet pushed the more Akel resented her. And this.. well all of this had been too much for her.
She was angry. How could the woman think that such a thing would be okay? Akeldama turned and left the house, clicking her tongue to call her familiar so that it followed. They had work to do and they would do it away from the crazy yellow skinned woman who was trying to control her life. She didn't even bother waiting to see if her mother said anything more. If she had Akel wasn't so sure she would have listened anyways. Not with how her blood was raging through her ears and making a roaring sound that made her want to act out with aggression.

"I should have listened to the other mothers." Ciriet said with venom in her voice as she stalked toward Akeldama. "Oh, but noooo.. I had to do it my way. I thought letting you have some fun as a kid would be good for you but clearly I should have trained you harder." With a quick slap she fixed her Elarian daughter's footing.
Akel gritted her teeth as she took the scolding. There was no getting around it. Her training had started in full and she was getting nothing but reprimands.Clearly Ciriet felt that speaking to her negatively would motivate her more. In truth it just made Akeldama want to smack her with the spear she held in her hands. Not that she acted on that. Though the thought did make her smirk a little. An act that gained her a glare.
"Now try that monstrosity again. I want you to lunge forward and thrust with all your might but keep your feet in the right position so you don't lose your balance." Ciriet spoke matter-of-factly to her and folded her arms in front of her chest.
She took a deep breath in, wanting to tell her mother to go away but instead drew her brows together so that she could focus. Akel moved forward, her foot going out in front of her the way she was taught, so that she could lunge and thrust all at once. She felt the spear rotate in her hands as it moved into the target. With her so close to it she hit the center easily. Then again they weren't too worried about accuracy right now. Ciriet was dead set on getting her footwork to perfection. Before her alkidike mother could criticize or tell her to do it again she backed up and got back into the starting position.
"Good." Came the single word of praise.
With her hands back to a comfortable position she repeated the move. Akeldama felt that she might as well continue to do the correct way over and over again so that her body would remember the move so her mind wouldn't have to.
Ciriet watched with mild approval as Akel did the lunge and thrust until sweat was dripping down her face. It was best that she start getting used to working harder and harder now so that in the future it wouldn't become a concern.
As the sweat moved down her face and even into her eyes she ignored it. Or at least she tried to. The sting of the salty drops in her eyes was a little too annoying to ignore. It caused her to blink furiously in an attempt to clear it away. When that didn't work she shook her head as if she could simply fling it away. With that failing as well she gave in and paused long enough to wipe the sweat away. However, once that was done and she could keep her eyes open without too much irritation she was right back at practice.
There was another noise of approval from Ciriet but this sounded more like a grunt rather than an actual word. Akel wasn't sure, maybe it was a word, but she didn't really care. Her body was in the rhythm of the lunge and thrust and the strain on her muscles felt good. She could feel them pulling taunt and then relaxing only to do it all over again.
When Akeldama had been at it for more than an hour and her mother felt she had gotten the move and footwork right enough to not need constant correction she told the girl to stop. She was even nice enough to bring her daughter a cloth to wipe off with.
"You did good. Your footwork is almost perfect now but you need to put more power behind the thrust." It seemed she always found something to nit pick at.
Rather than argue or blow up at the woman, the elaria girl simply nodded her head and went to fetch herself the water-skin so that she could get a drink. It hadn't bothered her until she wasn't moving anymore but her mouth was dry. As she gulped down the water she moved her green gaze over to look at her mother. Once her thirst was satisfied she pulled the water-skin away from her lips and wiped her mouth.
"So, you want me to work at it some more?" She might as well find out now before she decided to relax.
"Hm? No, not today." Ciriet moved toward her daughter with a triumphant smile. Clearly the woman was up to something. "I actually have something else in mind. Since you were so stubborn about it before I went ahead and poke to my friends and found someone to be your partner."
There was a dead pause for the span of a second then Akel groaned. "Ciriet, I told you I don't need to worry about that right now." Although it was obvious right now that her mother hadn't listened to her one bit.
"Yes, yes, I know what you said but trust me, I know best." She gripped her daughter by the shoulders and grinned. "I met the girl and she's a perfect fit for you. Her mother and I decided that we will allow for a 'dating' period so you two can get to know each other but we expect you to seek Elzira's blessing within the next two years."
Akel's jaw dropped open at that. Ciriet seriously expected her to go to Elzira and ask for a bloom of her own so soon? As she stood there, stunned into silence, her mother took it as acceptance and walked away muttering something about setting up the meeting. Left standing there like an idiot she could only blink. It wasn't until her familiar, Yava, made a noise that she looked down and seemed to fully understand just what her mother had sprung on her.
The tricky woman had waited until Akeldama was physically exhausted to spring it on her. The young girl sank to the ground and sat cross legged as she looked at her pet. "That vile woman tricked me."
Yava made a strange clicking sound and Akel nodded. "Yep." It seemed the girl was having a conversation with the Maglardilla.
Still, by now she imagined her mother was doing a victory dance at her lack of rebellion on the matter and had already sent word to her friend that it was a done deal. Akel could go after her and demand that she tell them it was off, but really she had no energy to. Not only that but the more she thought about it the more she could see the logic in her mother's concern. Which was a sure sign that she was more than just a little tired. As she sat there she slowly leaned back until she was laying on the ground. Any other time she would be upset to get so dirty but she was ready to pass out. Not to mention her mind was trying to figure out exactly when she had conceded.
Her familiar moved in closer so that he could snuggle up with her and she shifted to make room for him. Once they were comfy she closed her eyes. What would it really hurt to meet the girl her mother thought was perfect for her? If she didn't like her then she could always say so and be done with it. Right? Her mind started to think about it. Could she guess who it was? Or did her mother not understand her at all? "What if she is trying to pair me with a brutish girl? Or worse... a diva?" Did she really wanna risk that? The thought crosses her mind to simply ignore her mother and avoid meeting the girl altogether. There were a lot of variables but in the end she thought it couldn't hurt anything to at least meet her. Maybe her mother knew her better than she thought? Akeldama always assumed that since she was different from Ciriet that the woman didn't get her at all. Though it seemed that she might in her own, odd way. Internally she wondered if perhaps she might even like this girl.
"We'll meet this girl, right Yava?" She asked.
When he chittered tiredly she nodded and yawned. "Right. How bad can she be?" Her words were muffled until they finally trailed off. It seemed like it was official, she would be meeting her mother's choice of partners for her and actually giving it an honest shot.
(( this moment is a deciding time for Akeldama since she could have opted to run away from appeasing her mother's wishes but rather than being rebellious as she was before she instead decides to go along with her mother's idea. Not only does this demonstrate that she's maturing and accepting more responsibility as she ages into becoming a warrior but she's also showing more dedication in her training, something that she often avoided before as she was a more relaxed Elarian.))
