Happy Seventeenth Birthday Rory
Word Count:
1,057 words

The day Rory turns seventeen is a cold almost-spring day.

She gets up, gets dressed for school, then makes sure there’s food left out for the cats. She even spends sometime curling her hair so that it falls in nice ringlets against the collar of her school uniform. As always, she puts on the gold seashell necklace Bob had gifted her and then packs her lunch; a simple salad with dressing tucked away in a small container to the side.

On the kitchen counter is a note from Pops.

Sweetheart,

Happy 17th Birthday! I’m sorry work’s got me out of town on call, but there’s a cupcake in the fridge from your favorite bakery. We’ll celebrate when I’m home.

Love,

Dad

(P.S. I know you like to visit your mother on your birthday, so I left $20 in the cookie jar for flowers.)

As promised, there sits a cute box wrapped with mint ribbon and a cute tag that says Happy Birthday Aurora! It’s not much, but it’s all her dad can afford and she’s grateful for that. Besides, she stopped getting presents a long time ago. The fridge door shuts when Rory let’s go, the entire appliance rattling and creaking when the lining decompresses.

The girl has to reach up, standing on her tippy-toes to reach the goofy looking cookie jar atop the fridge. It’s some ugly, middle school project that Rory did for a class. The whole thing is misshapen, crafted by tiny unskilled hands and only a few cookies properly fit in it.

Heck, the cork top doesn’t even fit right because the mouth is just a smidge too tight.

So they use it for emergency funds and, most often, Rory fills it with her babysitting money so that on those nights where pops doesn’t come home when he’s supposed to and the fridge is empty, she can afford to order a pizza here and there. Since the pizza usually lasts her the rest of the week, she figures it’s okay to splurge on that.

Money goes into the pocket in her bag that houses her cheap pre-paid brick phone, she’ll stop by the store after school.

Homeroom is the same as always; her birthday gets mentioned and there’s a chorus of half-hearted and dry happy birthdays that fill the room. As always, Rory smiles pleasantly and hides her embarrassment behind the way she tucks her hair behind an ear and averts her gaze, continuing to doodle in her notebook at the teacher continues on.

In the margin of the page, she draws a mangy cat with a party hat.

The rest of school passes mundanely, with a swell of anticipation, maybe even anxiety, rattling in Rory’s child heart. A few times, she has to press her fingers to the coolish metal of the seashell on her neck to calm herself.

Visiting her mother always fills her with a flux of emotions and it’s not that she doesn’t want to go, but that being there is hard and it never stops being hard. So, she stops at a small flower shop, owned by an old lady and her partner who look delighted to see her.

“Getting the same thing as always sweetie?” The grandma asks, wrinkled face crinkling with a fond smile.

“If you don’t mind Miss Poppie,” Rory replies, rocking on her feet as she grasps the strap of her messenger bag tighly. “I’ve only got twenty, so whatever amount that’ll buy me.” Usually it’s not a lot, but it’s enough to at least make a small bouquet.

“It’s your birthday too isn’t it?”

“Yes, Miss Poppie.”

“I suppose we can give you a nice birthday discount.”

“Oh, that’s not - “

“Nonsense, sweetie.” Miss Poppie waves her hand and disappears into the back. When she returns, it’s with a lovely full bouquet full of sunflowers and white carnations.

“Miss Poppie - “ Rory starts, tears pricking her eyes, “she’s gonna love it.” She’s reaching for her money, offering it in exchange for the flowers.

“Happy birthday, Sweetie. Say hi to your mom for me,” Poppie says with that sweet old lady smile.

“I will,” Rory promises, cradling the flowers delicately in the crook of her arm when she leaves the shop.

The walk to the cemetery isn’t a long one from the flower shop and Rory knows it so well that she could do it with her eyes closed, she’s sure. It’s a path that usually her and Pops walk every year on her birthday, but this is the second year in a row where he’s unable to take off work.

She gets it, she really does, but it doesn’t make it any less difficult when she has to go alone.

Stray leaves crunch beneath the soles of her boots as she walks, a shiver, from the sudden gust of wind that has her hair wiping across her face, leaves goosebumps on her skin. For the most part, the cemetery is empty, with a stray car here and a few spotty visitors there.

Grass is soft beneath her shoes, the area recently watered because there’s water droplets on the blades of grass and some of the headstones are shiny with mist. Old flowers litter graves and jade eyes take in every single name and passage written in stone as she crosses the expanse of the cemetery.

For the most part, Rory keeps to the concrete path that winds through the area, but sometimes she’ll step off and pick up a stray piece of garbage that’s been blown about or adjust the placement of a left behind gift so that it remains pristine and neat.

She knows she’s doing it to delay the inevitable, but the well of sadness in her chest is almost too much to bear when she thinks about her destination.

Rory gets there, eventually.

Briar Willows’ grave isn’t something intricate. It’s a small plaque in the ground, with her name carved into the stone and the dates she lived etched in for memory. Carefully, despite the squishy ground, Rory sinks to her knees and lays the flowers across the top.

“Hey mom,” Rory says in a tiny, quiet voice. “It’s been a while…I turned seventeen today. I wish you could’ve been here to celebrate. Pops’ is working, he’s always working these days, but we miss you.”
