The Only Black Uke

Abie nodded. Yup, the calming breath didn't go unnoticed. "There's actually a few merchants who specialize in that...but you want the best. You gotta go to the twins." Abie said while beckoning the other to follow. As he walked he talked...

"The twins are hybrids. Not too much older than myself, but their stall and most of their wares are inherited through their Dad. He's a Oban, still kicking so you'll see him from time to time helping them. He had to retire because he got caught up in a trivial brawl a few years back. Cost him a arm and most of the mobility of his leg." Abie stopped to look around as if trying to remember where the twins were again. "Ah...there they are."

The twins, did indeed look Oban. Their fiery crystals and dark dread-locked hair gave that away. The rest....was all Matorian. Their skin was a dark shade of blue than normal, the Matori markings danced around their crystals. Abie and Aqio had gotten close to these two. Really close. Abie knew that both of them were interested in helping him raise the infants. To the point that they were giving him the starting point supplies. Once he had the cart. Twin pair of golden eyes locked onto Abie and Damsiaan.

"Damsiaan. Meet Macha and Masha."

Hybrids.

Of course the fish was friends with hybrids. Aloud, however, he said nothing, and followed because why not. He had made it this far. It seemed prudent to let the encounter survive at least until its natural end, and if he gained anything from it, he could consider it time well spent, regardless of the frustrations involved. If not—well, not all interactions were fruitful.

“Damissan,” he said aloud immediately after being introduced. “My name is Damissan, not Damsiaan. Damis…if you like. It is…” His attention flicked between the two of them, “…a pleasure to meet you.”

The product of a slaver’s affair with a waterling, perhaps? But then, no, his current company had said the father was still around, and even ‘helped.’ A merchant, then, without enough connections to find a wife of his own blood.

“I’ve been told you sell travelling supplies?”

The Only Black Uke

Abie had leaned on the far side of the stall. The only difference in the twins were the way they wore their hair. Macha wore his dreads completely free falling to his waist. While Masha wore them up in a single tail. The Matori male leaned his back against the stall as he let Laqui slip out and play fight with his hand. He glanced up again as the twins exchanged looks. "Be civil you two."

Macha's voice was gruff. "Damis. Welcome. Yes we indeed do. Though there is a full blood Oban further down you could do business with if you prefer."

Masha's sounded softer. "We understand not many respect hybrids just yet. Wouldn't want our customers to feel uncomfortable."

Abie smiled. The twins did take their customers into account. Damis looked like a noble, therefore his mindset must of been one as well. That being the thought the twins didn't expect him to want to stick around.

Damissan’s arched barely upwards, but his posture eased, neutral as he surveyed them, and then their wares. “I came here,” he said at length. “Not down the way. So while here, I see no reason not to inquire what you have for sale…I’ll be travelling. Alone. For a period of many weeks, possibly months, and I have nothing yet for my journey. I can’t carry all my purchases back this evening, but I can arrange to have them picked up if you have items suitable. Quality comes before everything else in terms of importance.”

His gaze flicked to Abie, and then the pair of brothers.

“Where might you suggest I start?”

The Only Black Uke

Abie leaned his head to look over the wares. Macha crossed his arms as he leaned back on one foot. Masha leaned forward with a easy smile. "All by yourself. My. That's going to be a grand adventure for sure. Considering its just you...this small group here would be perfect for you."

He let a gentle touch fall to a small grouping of items. A simple length of rope, some canvas, a small pot, a small kettle along with a simple plate with eating instruments. The hybrid smiled at Damis. "Do you have a set destination? That would help to prepare you further."

Abie nodded then chipped in his two cents. "That's a good point. If you were going to Tale, best get something good for snags. The trees there will tear up things. Going to Sauti, gunna need something to withstand the Sun and Winds. Going to Matori, water-resistance. Jauhar...eh...just watch out for the spiders from what I hear. Zena is pretty cold, so you'll need to pack warm..." he said as he accepted another wet cloth. This time from Macha, so he could wipe down the infant who let out a content hiss.

Damissan watched, and listened. The farthest from Sulburi that he’d ever been were the neighboring cities of Oba, and always with noble company, pre-arranged by his parents. Thus, he had never actually been outside the borders of his homeland and yet, on his current path—

“Each of them,” he said aloud. “In turn. I intend to visit all eventually. But…perhaps for now, preparation for the nearest, neighboring nations. Jauhar, Tale…” He hesitated before adding, “…Matori.”

He had not specifically planned on visiting Matori, and perhaps, with a little forethought, it made sense to put the fishing nation off, at least until he had accustomed himself more to other aspects of his intended journey. He suspected, after all, that simply being a young Oban walking in the lands of formerly enslaved peoples would beg controversy, never mind adding to it the message he intended to preach—already proven to displease some fairly intensely even among his own people.

So, he worked with the hybrid merchants with this in mind, focusing his attention for now on what he would need in the immediately abutting nations, and wondering all the while what the practice of being out in said lands would prove to be like.
