Mehtab had looked at his clock and sighed. It was 10 pm on a Sunday night. School wasn't due to start until noon tomorrow for his online arabic course. It was something he wanted on paper. That he could read, write, and speak it. He wanted to use his skin color to help himself, others. He wanted to get into law school one day. Advocate for the rights of those who didn't have the means to otherwise. He wanted to help. It was his greatest weakness his friends told him. He cared too much. He fought too hard for nothing. To Mehtab.. they didn't care enough. They didn't realize how bad things could be. How they could get worse.

Maybe it was just that doubt he had about the government, about the patriarchy. After all, what in his life was worth getting so worked up about? He'd left his folks, left that life behind him and now was independant. He could do whatever he wanted. People forgot about the cost. The price of freedom and having to fight for food. To going cold at night so a sibling wouldn't cry about how he couldn't sleep. To mom making soup from matchup packets. To hearing the sound of your mom's work at 14 years old and knowing exactly what was going on because if you didn't, how would you know if you had to call the police or not? Mahtab had gotten out, but he'd fought for it.

The books scattered over his desk weren't just about law or justice or languages. They were fantasy. Novels of worlds dreamed up by artists. They were his balm. The small sparks of joy in his life. They made him happy on cold winter nights alone in his drab apartment. Picking one up he thumbed the pages, smelling them. The scent of paper and ink. It was comforting and damning. Perhaps it was escapism. Retreating to fantasy novels when he should have been studying, not dwelling on the world and his life. But it was 10 pm on a Sunday night and class wouldn't start un noon and it WAS an online course. He COULD get away with it. Probably.

Opening up the book, Alphard laughed to himself as he saw the reason he'd stopped. It was a kissing scene. Knowing himself, he'd probably been high as hell, and too emotional to handle his feelings as the duo kissed under starlight. Oh it was such a trope but it was a classic one. It helped him. Plus? Eyes flicked back to the Arabic text he was supposed to read. Well, he could read something in Arabic later. Or try to at any rate. It probably wouldn't help him as much as cheesy lines though.

Snow falling in the cold winter was nothing new. He just thought it was prettier than usual. Things had taken a new meaning to him in recent months, mostly, due to his sudden powers and well. Finding out you were legit, 100% for real night? Okay, batman had nothing on him. Even if Batman had like, money and fame and tons of hot ladies AND superman secret love affair. But could Batman make a sphere of absolute darkness followed by a light so bright it could stun and or blind a person? Okay maybe but that was science. Alphard, (some star apparently. That's what google had said anyway), on the other hand did it with magic.

Could Batman use magic. No because he was a human and everyone who was human in the DC universe was either a mutant, had monies, or was going to die. Actually, in the DC universe, Mehtab was pretty sure you'd die at least once. But don't worry! You'd come back. Thanks for that too DC comics. The superman effect would tarnish every comic forever. Mehtab had feelings about that but- man.

Stars were ******** radical. The sky was radical. Snow was radical. It was all tied together in some weird cosmic way and they even had knights for that cosmic s**t. Like Teide. Who had stars in her hands with that ball and hadn't wanted to fight but had no choice and he just wished that she'd chill.

Sure, she'd had probably seen some s**t but like, why had she'd gotten so mad. He got it but then he didn't. This was a war and a fight but no matter what those monsters were going to come after them no matter where they were. Who they were right? So why worry about it? Why deny the basic facts. No where was going to be safe so why not go to iHop? Did being night mean that he wasn't safe during a time he was supposed to embody? That kind of s**t was messed up.

A heavy sigh left him as he looked around him. The rooftop was empty save for a few cans of beer someone had left in a rush, a bunch of dying plants the owner of the building had put up to make it look nice. Oh, and couldn't forget the bed some crazy homeless guy had left behind a week ago before the landlord had called the police and chased him off.

Still, looking at the sky, Mehtab had to admit, it was prettier now that he knew a part of himself was night. That he was something aside from just Mehtab. It was always better to be a part of something than to be alone after all.

Hot chocolate didn't taste the same until you added peppermint to it. If it was by syrup or candy cane didn't really matter to Mehtab. So long as it was winter, chocolate needed peppermint. That was just the way of the world. Like Ocotober it was pumpkin and September it was apples. Most people called it the season of the hipster and hey, Mehtab wasn't about to deny it. He could be a basic white b***h at heart. So ******** you patriarchy, he will embrace is so called white girl and for all of October and November get every damn drink as pumpkin spice chai tea latte soy no whip extra shot espresso name will be Batman please and thank you local barista here is a 50 cent tip for you putting up with my bullshit.

Puffing up in his overstuffed coat, Mehtab had a sudden swelling urge to go ranting to someone about how marketing had made the pumpkin spice a hated beloved drink all because of women liking it and just- man. No body he knew was up for social meet ups and protests this time of year. Everyone was chill. Not just temp wise but chill chill. Not that netflix and chill either, (but lord have mercy on his sinner's soul what he'd not give to chill with a bae on a night like tonight. Low lights, snow outside, maybe some rom-com playing while they got it on- aw yeah okay he could see why no one wanted to be out in the cold protesting damn it all).

The hot chocolate in his hand had a candy cane in it and he swirled it around his cup, musings haven taken another odd turn. This was normal however. He'd not come down from being high yet, and the chocolate was helping mellow him out a lot. It was also nice to have something to stir the drink with, as it kept his hand busy. Relaxing against a lamp post, Mehtab watched the cars drive past the tiny local coffee shop, wondering how many were like him. Just living day by day, enjoying things like hot chocolate, pumpkin spice chair tea lattes with soy no whip. He was sure someone else in the city liked the same drink. He couldn't be alone. Taking a sip it warmed his throat, going down and spreading to his fingers and toes in a pleasant hum.

Little things. Sure, nobody wanted to be out protesting, but hey, he couldn't blame them for it. It was cold, and well, there were other things to do. He figured that for things like hot chocolate, a fight against the patriarchy and capitalism and racism could wait.
At least until it was above 50.
