Teide wrung her hands together nervously and looked up and down the street. Alphard had asked her to go get waffles with him, which sounded wonderful and she liked waffles - but it also kind of felt like a date and Teide wasn't sure how to feel about that. Alphard was nice and he smelled good and she supposed he was attractive, but she wasn't sure she wanted to date him! She hoped - she hoped she hadn't given him the wrong impression, and that he would still want to be her friend even after she said so.

He was late - or she thought he might be, but she wasn't wearing a watch. Teide turned and looked into the restaurant, scanning the tables - maybe he'd gotten here way ahead of her and she was late? A wave of anxiety rolled through her chest, and she turned back to the street, looking both ways like she was ready to bolt.

And then - there he was, his aura buttercream-sweet the way all Order auras were to her. Once, the taste had make her stomach turn, but purification had tempered the flavor and made it less repulsive. (One might say it was an acquired taste.)

She raised an arm, waving hesitantly, not fully committed to the idea of catching his attention. "Alphard! Over here."

A date was as far flung from Alphard mind like most other things. Like just how someone had claimed they had a strain of orange and cream mary jane and yeah their's was soooOOoooOOOOo much better. He wasn't even going to go into that thought. All bad vibes, all bad news and gloom and bluh. Today was a good day, (night- a good him), and he was going for waffles with Teide and it would be wonderful and maple syrup and fresh fruit slices with powdered sugar and amazing.

Running up to the waffle house, he smiled at the hostess before strolling over to his party. "Hey Teide! I hope I didn't make you wait- I got stuck thinking." Which was as good a time waster as any in his point of view. "Like, how come we get called terrorists just because of what we wear? Ladies at those fashion shows wear stuff just as sparkly and crazy and no body says they're suspect." Sitting down right next to her he whispered.
"But I like it here. They don't mind, but they also serve food all the time so I think they're used to funny clothes." Lifting the menu he grinned. "Thanks for coming though. Food is better when you can share it."

Teide nodded, feeling slightly overwhelmed by how effusive he was. Nothing seemed romantic about his intentions, but then, she had very little to compare him to. What if she just didn't know what to look for? What if he tried to hold her hand? What if he tried to kiss her??? Teide had never been kissed before, and doubted she would know what to do. Where were you supposed to put your hands? How were you supposed to breathe?

She picked up her own menu, noting that it was slightly sticky, and nodded. "I'm a little worried we might be recognized," she said, after a moment's hesitation. "Power calls to power. I'm sure you've felt it. The radar in your head, the whole war spinning around." There were no Negaversers nearby right now - she felt no inky darkness, no oxidizing blood - but that didn't mean there wouldn't be. And a senshi and a knight sitting in full view of the street would attract trouble.

"It's not because of what we wear," she added. considering her options with pursed lips. She wanted bacon, decided Teide, and lots of it, and absolutely no fruit sauce. "It's because of what we do. The fighting."

She tilted her head at him. He was new, she thought. A low-level senshi, a miniature cupcake and not a wedding cake. "You have fought before, right?" Teide asked.

Alphard wasn't about to hold her hand, but he was all about being close and smiling like hardly anything might go wrong.
"You worry a lot." He said, thumbing over to a new page, this one had buttermilk waffles. "I get that weird fuzzy static feeling sometimes and chills but then I know it's something I don't want to mess with. Right now I just am next to you and it's like sitting next to a sunny day with a cool breeze. Nice, calm, you know, just a good feeling." Looking over the menu he didn't notice anyone noticing them aside from the confused hostess.

He was starting to grow fond of the buttermilk and basket plate. Chicken and waffles just with a different name. "I try not to fight really. Fighting doesn't solve things most of the time. Plus it hurts. Why hurt people?" Aside from when they deserved it, like when they called people racist names and said cruel things okay wait that was his bias.
"You been a lot of fights?" There was a feeling itching the back of his head, and it made him look past the menu once more. It was still empty, and the hostesses seemed to be more interested in chatting up the kitchen staff than bothering them.

Teide had long harbored the theory that different people perceived auras differently, and Alphard's description of her was as much confirmation as she was ever going to get. "When I'm close to a senshi or a knight," she said, "I get a sweet taste in my mouth. It used to - it used to taste rancid, like the icing they put on sheet cakes at the wholesale grocery. Now it's more like marzipan - more appealing."

She thought she had her order straight, but was too nervous to make eyes at the waitress, who seemed to know something was up.

"Yes," she said, folding her hands neatly on top of her menu. Alphard was probably going to judge her for all the fighting she'd done, she thought dismally. He wouldn't want to be friends with someone so violent. "I've had to do a lot of fighting. To stay alive."

I wasn't always good like you.

"Oh." He looked at Teide for a moment then smiled as quickly had it had left for that brief second when she'd confessed to fighting. "I'm sure it was very important at the time. That is just how it happens sometimes. Hey, you think they have an option to mix gravies for the buttermilk and basket plate? One just isn't enough you know. I want that full flavor you feel me?"

He felt himself, but then, he also felt something else now, that distinct buzzing of static, like a fly that hovered just by your ear yet you couldn't see it.
"Huh." He hoped it was just a fly. He really wanted to get his food tonight.
"If you're ready I can flag the lady over. Also, we'll need more napkins. You always need more than what they give you. It's just a thing."

The buzzing was persisting.

Teide frowned, chewing her lips nervously. She still had to fight, and fight a lot - but that didn't seem like something Alphard would want to hear about. He'd only judge her for it - he seemed like the kind of person who had a lot of opinions, even if she wasn't sure he had the experience to base them in. Alphard had never been in her shoes.

"Uhhh, yeah," she said softly, "I'm ready."

Frowning, she looked around. Something felt off - something dark and acrid, like burnt toast and chemical ash. Her stomach rolled unappetizingly. "Do you taste that?" she asked under her breath. "It's...." No. Please not here. Please. "Something's not right."

He was going for the waffles and gravy and all that chickeny goodness. Maybe they'd also have extra gravy free of charge? Yet as he got ready to wave the waitress down, that feeling in his head prickled again, and he frowned. It was that bad stuff, round two. Plus, Teide did not look any sorts of hungry any more.
"I don't taste anything but-" He looked up, wondering if they could make it outside first. No reason to get anyone else caught in the danger zone.

"Lets get some air yeah?" He was smiling, yet he felt his heart sinking into his stomach. He just wanted a nice dinner and to see Teide happy. Why was even that going to be difficult?

"I-" He didn't get to finish what he'd been about to say, as one booth over, a youma had decided to join them via the window.

Teide did her best not to scream. Screaming would only attract attention, and the youma would spot them soon enough whether or not she made noise. They'd brought it here, she and Alphard. It was drawn to their magic. To their power. To the sweet starseeds singing inside their chests.

She pushed herself to her feet. "Youma," she said under her breath. "It's a youma."

Alphard had never fought before. She'd told him about being sad, about not liking to kill them, but - maybe he'd never seen one first hand.

She called her orb to her, conjuring it lightly into her waiting fingers, the chain settling across her palm. "I don't want to hurt you," she said, turning towards the beast. "But that doesn't mean I won't. You shouldn't be here. There's nothing for you here!"

"Teide." He was tugging at her arm gently. "Teide, we need to get outside." He knew it was a youma, but he was pretty sure going towards it wasn't what they should do.

"Teide, it's going to hurt people if-" The hostess and a cook had come over, and it was too late. The woman screamed, the man was running to the back. Alphard didn't know who else was there, and he knew what would happen if he used his attack. He'd be blind and with the glass, the booths and path outside- He was afraid. He didn't want to get hurt. For Teide to get hurt. For anyone to get hurt. Why couldn't they have had just a nice meal?

"Teide-" He didn't get to finish, the youma's sights focusing on him, the weaker of the powered pair. It was nimble, and it was lunging for him.

Teide shot Alphard a wide-eyed looked. If they went outside, then who did he think was going to deal with the youma?! There wasn't anyone else around - she would have felt them if there was anyone within emergency response distance. "No," she said, shaking off his grip. "We have to--"

The youma was headed for Alphard, claws gleaming in the florescent track lighting. "No!" shrieked Teide, fumbling with her crystal ball. She threw herself in front of Alphard, arms extended, magic surging through the weapon in her hands until it shined like a small sun. The youma paused, transfixed by the light.

"Make it quick," she said to Alphard. "It doesn't deserve to be in pain."

iStoleYurVamps
Magic - Teide offers her crystal ball to a target and compels their attention for as long as she is channeling. Their perception of and reaction to surrounding events is extremely slowed for the duration of her magic, and everything becomes incredibly sparkly and pretty to look at. As a squire, she can channel for forty-five seconds, increased to ninety as a knight.

He'd been ready for impact yet when none came Alphard sucked in his breath. He wanted to explain that his powers didn't work that way, he blinded them, made them get wrapped up in the darkness. He wasn't made to hurt or fight. But if they didn't fight? His mind flashed to the small knight in front of him, who had been so against fighting and hurting asking him to do it and- His eyes looked around. All he saw in reach were the basic knives.

"I'm sorry okay?" He knew he lacked the pure brute strength some guys had, he knew the knife was dull but it was all they had.

"I'll try." Alphard focused on his breathing, grabbing the knife like it was a dagger- it would have to be like a dagger. "God, just let it work." It was slow-fast. Moving to get in a good point and then-
He moved the knife under the creature's jaw before he used his own weight to force the head down. The reaction wasn't immediate. It trashed at the sudden attack, head impaled by force and trying to open it's jaw while the dull blade was rammed into it's skull. It sent the senshi further on top of the youma, the head forced more onto the blade and then-
A cloud of dust and Alphard was on the floor, wincing as he felt pain shooting up his arm.

He'd ******** it up. It hadn't been quick. "s**t."
It was all he managed to say.

Teide let her magic lapse, the crystal ball fading from her hands and taking its light and its sparkles with it. The youma had turned to dust, to snow, to finely-swirling powder, but outside their enchanted little bubble, a crowd was gathering.

She reached down and grabbed Alphard's hand, pulling him to his feet. "We need to go," she said.

She heard sirens in the distance.

"We really need to go," she said, pulling him along as she stepped up onto the table and out through the window. She pulled him along behind her for several blocks, before finally stopping and choking out a sob.

"We shouldn't have been there," wept Teide. "If we hadn't been there, it wouldn't have been there, either. It was looking for us."

He knew she was right, but the guilt had stick him for a moment, wanting to just remain motionless and pretend that it wasn't happening. Yet it was, and Teide's tugging on his arm helped pull him back to reality.

Through the window, over a few blocks, to a safe haven we go.

He was just following her at that point, wishing things hadn't ended up that way. He'd been wanting to cheer Teide up and now? No she was crying. The complete opposite of his entire game plan.
He wasn't sure if what he was thinking was the most brilliant thing to say but-
"By that logic, we shouldn't BE anywhere." He was frowning. "They're always looking for us, that one just happened to find us. It.. happens." Sort of like him and being a bit of a failure. He wasn't sure if he should hug her or not but- he tried. If she pushed him away he'd understand but, he'd try.
"... I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it faster. My power- it doesn't work like that."

It didn't harm things.
"There was nothing we could have done Teide. It would have found us no matter where we went."

Teide swiped her hands across her face, drying her tears on her gloves. "I know," she said. She was being stupid, she thought. Stupid and irrational and Alphard probably thought she was so dumb. "But we shouldn't have gone to Waffle House. That was bad."

She sat down, letting her legs dangle over the edge of the roof. "My power doesn't work like that, either,' she said. "It just makes everything... pretty." She settled her orb on her lap, fingers tracing the swirling stars. "I can charm myself with it. I mean. I have to cross my eyes and concentrate really hard."

"The youma follow us," she said, "So we shouldn't go anywhere it might put people in danger." It had been his idea, she thought, but she shouldn't blame him. He was new. He was super inexperienced. It was okay.

Except it definitely wasn't.
