Sleepy head and Goodbye.

Nestled down in her bed she knew she should try to sleep but just couldn’t manage it. She had spent a whole day working on the harvests with the others in the settlement so she supposed she really should be able to sleep, but it was so exciting. She peeked over to her bags that were all packed and laying by the door entrance. Tomorrow she was leaving Isd for the first time! Granted she wasn’t going anywhere really dangerous.. just Yera. But it was far enough in Tale that this was sure to be and adventure! BarAmal had left ages ago it seemed. He had stopped in but before she could even say hello he was gone again. Sighing she wondered what he was up to. She really doubted she would run across him again at least for a long while. After all he had headed to fight the obans in the south. She was headed further north. She was fairly temped to head south herself, but really what could she do? She could harvest plants and cook. That was the whole extent of her skills. It was pretty sad really. Still she liked to make others happy and by traveling she might learn a few new things to make. That made her smile wondering what fruits and nuts could be in Yera. Yes it was still in Tale, but it was to the more jungle like part of Tale in comparison to Isd. There had to be a lot of changes thanks to that. Rolling onto her stomach she pushed herself up and left her room and her home. It took a bit of work to get to make sure that she didn’t cut her feet on any shards of crystal grass. There was really not enough moon light to be doing this but she went ahead with her path anyway certain she would be fine since she was so used to this route. Eventually she saw the tell tale embers still alight in her make shift cooker of sorts. It was a series of flat crystal grass blades that had been all placed carefully to make a base. Burnable manure or whatever Sawleah could find to use functioned as a good fuel for it. It was surrounded by a mix of rock and more crystal grass so she could see what was going on inside of the cooker as well as move it apart to clean if the buildup was getting bad. There was a space that was clear in the center where she could put a nice pot or whatever she was cooking actually inside surrounded by the heat, while the top was covered by more Crystal grass that she could cook on top of. In truth it was one of the prettiest things she could ever think of, but sadly it wasn’t really something she could just take down and bring with her. She ran her hand gently in the air over top of the cooker. It was still warm. There was cured meat she had soaking in water on the inside right now. She would have a nice warm breakfast to snack on for her trip. Kneeling down she used a stick and shifted a few embers about. Hopefully the scorra meat would stay tender with that little bit of water in the pot with it. She considered adding a nut glaze to it, but she was feeling a bit lazy tonight so instead she just moved to her little jars she kept hidden behind the cooker. They were made of stone and set into the ground with nice heavy lids. Lifting one she pulled a handful of nuts out so she could nibble on them while watching the embers burn. She wasn’t scared of being cold with the heat and faint light of the cooker around her. Move over the others were so used to her oddness making good results that if anyone was on night watch for predators she might get a visit by a hopeful looking for some food. It had almost become a game over the years. There were a few times that food ‘mysteriously’ disappeared from her cooker, but after threatening to never cook again she found that such thievery stopped. If she was near the cooker though it was fair game to come and ask her for food.

Sitting silhouetted by the light soon enough there was a guard who came up to ask for food. Having made sure to put some extra in she agreed and used a sharp stick to jab for a bit of meat after wrangling the pot out with another stick. Being thanked by the guard she watched as the woman strode off. Sighing Mella shoved the pot back and stayed there a while longer making sure the coals wouldn’t burn her travel food. Once that was all done she headed back to her bed finding herself quite tired. Collapsing on the bed she curled up finally able to get some sleep.

The next morning she was greeted by some intoxicating smells. Opening her eyes it seemed her parents let her sleep in and even brought her food from the cooker right to her room. It was on a plate on a small stool from the other room. Smiling to herself she grabbed her pack and the still warm meat from the plate. It was a bit cooler than she would have liked but that was what happened when people took things out of perfectly warm pots and just had them sitting on cool plates open and left to the air for any amount to time. Still the fact they were even still warm told her that she hadn’t missed her parents by too much. Wanting to get a move on she started to eat while she walked out the door and down to the harvest fields. Yes it would make her late, but it was worth it to wave goodbye to her parents. A new trip was starting and she was going to start it off right. That and she was late anyway from sleeping in what harm could it do?

Part timer.
Groaning she rolled over and into the scorra’s soft feathers. Eyes flittering open for a moment before closing again Sawleah tried not to yawn and failed miserably. Shifting her elbows she dragged her head up to check the embers of the fire from last night. She was once more staying outside and up cooking all night. She had reached Neued with little difficulty but now she was dealing with an unforeseen consequence of travel. The need to have a place to stay and not having the skills or items for a good trade. Instead she was working for an inn of sorts that had sprung up on the ground to cater to travelers from all over. She of course offered to help cook and to get an early start on the breakfast rush had been cooking much of the night. She had soft dough rising up for bread on stones placed over the cooler embers and a light soup warming in that part of the pit as well. A thick slab of meat was suspended above the fire on a spit that she had been turning all night before falling asleep outside with the fire keeping her warm on one side and her scorra on the other.

Stretching her arms above her head she winced as her joints popped even though it didn’t really hurt at all. “mmm Well I guess the day is almost ready to start.” She was talking to her scorra though the creature was still sleeping. Poking it in the neck she tried to jostle it awake. After two failed attempts she just shrugged and moved back to the food. Coaxing the coals back to a small blaze with wood that was only a bit damp with the morning dew she wondered how long it would take until someone would come out to check on her. It didn’t take long at all before the inn keeper came out and with a bemused smile asked if she had actually slept outside all night since her bed had been empty and didn’t look like it had been slept in. Blushing she replied to the kind woman. “Oh y-yes. Well I got to think about a few kinds of things I should make and some recipes take a bit of time so I started late last night to make sure I wouldn’t fall behind and before I knew it all night had come and gone on me. If you would be kind enough to set out some bowels of fruit I bet I can start making a few dishes for anyone who shows up early. Oh and I will need some more ground nuts.. and some felvie fern leaves would be nice too. I think I could make a good wrap from them.” Some stirred up eggs with fruit and chopped vegetables in the fern leaves did sound like a good way to start the day. The shifter woman looked down at her but it was a face of pleased surprise and not anything negative. Nodding the woman said she would look into it. Smiling Sawleah once more turned back to her task and used a foot to nudge her scorra awake.

The day ran by at hight seed it seemed like. No sooner than breakfast was done then it was time to start on lunch duties. It was really no surprise given that Neued was becoming so popular and was alive and thriving. Sawleah hardly had time to think much less venture out and make any new friends or scour the market for any new ingredients. By the time night fell she was sore and tired not to mention in sore need of a bath. The shifter whose name was Anlive as Sawleah had come to learn was very pleased with her services and was fine with putting her up for another night as well as actually paying her for her work. Thrilled Sawleah knew that it would work out so well for her. It might take a few days to really get enough to thrive here in Neued but she was patient and more than that willing to work. The evening routine started with clearing off a lot of dishes and clearing out the kitchen the grease drippings were saved so help flavor the pans with the leaner meats and she got a motor and pestle to grind down nuts to season things. Next she had to make stock to let boil down for the evening as well. That part was the trickiest because she wanted to have it flavorful and yet still wanted to try something new, which didn’t always work out so well. Deciding to go with something more traditional that she new worked she hunted down the aldabuck bone from the stew earlier. She would use that for the base rather then something that was hard to find like mamatu in this region. It would not only be cheaper but she would more familiar with it having grown up in Tale. Setting to work she didn’t even notice that the sun had long since left the sky. The stars twinkled over head and her scorra picked at the fruits Sawleah tossed to the side for being overripe or those who had any issues like bugs.

The mouring came once more to Neued and Anlive walked out to find Sawleah curled up with the pestle in hand curled dosing beside her scorra. Had anyone else been up they would have seen her shake her head with a smile and bring out a blanket to cover the leaf girl and let her sleep in well into the noontime rush. When Sawleah did wake up it was in a near panic until she spoke to Anlive and found out what happened. She still set to work to help the others who worked for the inn as soon as she could though. It wouldn’t be long before she would take a ‘day’ off to go hunt ingredients. Maybe she should ask Anlive about it and perhaps the woman would let her get things to play with and make a new dish for the inn!

A new trip starts?
The small camp she was in was quiet. In fact Sawleah was certain she was the only one awake at this hour. It made sense given that she was preparing everyone’s breakfast but it was still oddly a bit lonely. She still hadn’t really left Neued yet and could always head back and work at that inn a bit more. There always seemed to be someone up there to talk to. Still when she was working there she found that it wasn’t long before she had memorized all the recipes and things the inn keep used and then it became a bit of a bore just making the same dishes over and over again. The inn keeper seemed to understand well enough and was sad to see that Sawleah was ready to leave but didn’t stop her. After all Sawleah had already made several improvements to the meal recipes used and there really wasn’t anything holding her there. Since then Sawleah had been here and there in Neued staying with traveling groups and learning the different things about travel food she could from them. After all just because a meal had to keep and be ready to be used at a moment’s notice didn’t mean it always had to taste like salt or fat. The camp she was currently in wasn’t really a group per say just an odd assortment of those ended up settling down in the area together for a while. There was some conflict up toward Sauti and a part of Sawleah kind of wanted to head up that way but she didn’t feel quite safe enough for that. Not only did she not fight as a profession but she had also seen that it didn’t matter where you went there could be bandits of any kind nearby. She had been so sad to see that her own people where not exempt from this. A rustling from one of the tents near her made Sawleah pull her mind from her thoughts as she stirred the soup that was really not a soup. The fresh warm smell of the bread she was rising next to the fire permeated the air and she used a stick to spin the continuer on the rock so the fire would warm both sides evenly. The finished breads were cooling on a piece of cloth and the burned one… well Dawn took care of that for her. After a while a shifter male stumbled from his tent. She blinked and waved at him. She knew this one. He was Ta’ruk if she remembered right. He had a little sprite with him almost all the time. Cute but a little naïve he never seemed to notice when she flirted with him so she had written him off a few days ago when it came to the odds of having a bit of fun. Still she saved a few sweet treats aside for the little sprite who at least seemed to appreacte it. The said sprite was now groggly sitting on Ta’ruk’s shoulder not even willing to fly until it saw Sawleah dig into a pouch and pull out a berry for it. As the sprite darted forward to get it’s treat Ta’ruk settled crossed legged near Sawleah and looked at the bread with longing. “The bread on the cloth is done not that one by the fire so turn your gaze that way. By the way have you considered leaving the little one to sleep in the tent a while us girls need our beauty sleep you know.” She gave him a flirtatious wink out of habit which he just shrugged to. Chuckling she looked at the sprite who now had it’s head in the berry bag and likely was stuffing it’self as full as it could. “Well I suppose you might be right in this matter after all a bored sprite could be a dangerous thing to an unoccupied tent.” Or an occupied one for that matter she thought with a wicked grin. More members of the camp got up and were stumbling toward Sawleah. She started to dish out what she deemed breakfast soup which was really more of a egg mix with fruit, nuts, and a bit of meat. It had started as a joke when the inn keep asked her why she had been making soup for breakfast before looking in the pan and realized it wasn’t soup at all. The simple truth is Sawleah hadn’t had a decent flat cooking surface so she made her mix in the pot she normally made soup in that morning. Since then she referred to the mix as breakfast soup. Anyone who asked her got told the full story but few actually asked and most just gave her strange looks on the matter.

Once breakfast was wrapped up and all the laborious task of taking down the tent and packing everything up was dealt with Sawleah went off in search of a new place to sleep for the night with a new group. It would have to be small since Dawn wasn’t really all that keen on to many people and yet it would be nice if they had someone else who knew how to cook. The best way to find such a group was to hit up the market and start to talk to those who were trading for food. Spending much of the morning doing this Sawleah finally found an interesting woman to talk to. It seemed she wasn’t part of a caravan per say but traveled with a merchant and her young son. Thinking this might be a good group Sawleah spent more time talking to the matori woman before finally deciding that this would be the group to spend a few days with. Of course they would be traveling out of Neued soon but she didn’t mind a trip to another settlement. In fact it might well be fun. The woman had one more stop to make. She was headed to the animal part of the market to get a travel familiar both for use and as a friend for her son.
