Leather Wings and Scaly Things
(Class Choice Solo)

Mirin kicked out her legs from where she sat, her feet high up off of the ground. She knew she loved it up there, and it had been her whole life so far. She knew nothing more than the joys of living up in the canopy of Jauhar. But secretly - so much so she hadn't had the guts to tell anyone - most days she wished she could do the impossible. What it would be like to be able to fly. Those were the kinds of things that lingered in her mind long after the day had passed. She ran through the forest like she was pushed by the wind, she just wanted so badly to take that extra step, that extra leap and to be held by nothing, attached to nothing but air. So high up, she could rest up in the canopies like the nondwa or even the kinfa of Tale. There were so many more of them popping up in Jauhar every single day, it wouldn't even be impossible for her to get her hands on one without even leaving town.

She scooted herself up further into the tree and pushed herself to her feet, her balance steady. Maybe she could get herself one. Maybe she would do it today. She felt the idea grow in her mind and she already was moving, her body obeying what she had accepted as the only possible outcome without even the words having to come to her. She would get a kinfa. And it would be before the day was over. She ran down the tree trunk and through the twists and bends of the network of trees, her way back to the airborn village only minutes away, and she could feel every one of them bringing her closer to her goal. When Mirin set her sights on something, it would happen, that was for sure, and this was no different. She felt herself smirk to herself. Wouldn't her parents be proud of her.

She raced through the village, only stopping when she had finally made it to the marketplace. The large pavilion in the sky held all the stalls and traders posts for Sol and boy was it bustling. There were shifters everywhere, their dark skin moving and mixing from one place to the next. Mirin moved through the crowd, trying to find the right one. She knew she had seen it before... and it had to be somewhere around there... had it moved? She thought to herself, swirling on her heals and looking around at the stalls nearby. Aha! There it was. She nearly slid over to the stall, and she felt the excitement growing in her chest. This was the one. This merchant sold all kinds of critters, he had to have kinfa too. Mirin looked from cage to cage. Where was it? She looked up to the man's eyes staring back at her. "Can I help you with something miss?" He sounded hesitant, like he almost thought Mirin could be up to no good. Why else would a kid hang around a pretty pricey stall like this one? "Yeah, good eye. I'm definitely looking for a kinfa. I thought I had seen some babies around here a couple of weeks ago. You still have any in stock?"

She was hopeful, but she could see from the look on the guy's face that she was already too late. "Unfortunately we're fresh out. Just sold the last one yesterday. My supplier won't be back for a while yet." He rubbed his stubbly chin hairs before he squinted to Mirin. She could tell he was already gearing up to try to sell her something else. "I do have something else you might like though? Now, mind you, they don't grow like the kinfa do, but I bet you've never seen one in person before." He came around the back of the table and wheeled Mirin over to stacked cages. They had wings, they flew, but they were scaly. Mirin leaned in closer to the cages. What were those? She turned to ask the merchant, but he was already prepared with her answer. "Now what you have here are foreign critters. All the way from Sauti. Now, some may say that that's just a stone's throw away now-a-days, but let me tell you, they're not that easy to get a hold of. Like to hide up in the mountains those do." Mirin had to cut him off. "Oh C'mon - what're they called?" She was already exasperated. But he did have her on the hook, not only where they cute, but they looked playful, maybe even a little devious. She smirked to herself, watching one grab hold of the cage wall right in front of her face and screeching out a cocky little cry before turning in his spot to show her his butt. That's what she was talking about. Sass.

"They're sailscales." He was quiet for a moment before he coughed it out. "And they're 35 coins a piece"

Mirin laughed to herself. 35 was a bit pricey, but he had her. "Alright deal. I'll take this one right here." Mr. Shows-Off-His-Butt was going to be coming home with her. It was no kinfa, but she felt an odd sort of connection with them.

And the more she thought about it, the more she was interested in having more. Maybe she would catch them herself? Hell, maybe if she got good enough at catching them, she could catch herself a kinfa, and a nondwa, and whatever she damned well pleased. She rubbed her hands together, the idea already coming together. It made sense, her parents were both riders, though they prefer to stay on the ground, Mirin could fly with her critters. And why only have one, when she could have them all? Or... you know... just have about 30 of these guys. She could also live with that, she thought to herself. But one thing was for sure, she knew she could do it, and she would be better with her animals than her parents were with their mounts.

A Little Tough Love

Mirin tapped on the metal cage, her eyes landing on the small clasp. It was the only thing holding the little bugger inside, and boy was she making quite the fuss. She smirked and put her hand on the clasp, waiting to see if she would quiet. ”You know, I won’t let you out if you keep on fussing like that.” She called out to the sailscale inside. ”I can always just go ahead and get your replacement.” She threatened. It’s not like the little sailscale would have understood her, but she shrilled out a screech to Mirin anyways. She saw the fingers jiggle the cage door and her mouth suddenly snapped to silence. ”Yeah that’s what I thought.” Mirin countered. The little sailscale inside shimmied her shoulders, her fins fluffed up in aggravation.

Mirin blew out an obnoxious sound and rolled her eyes. ”Yeah, ok, that’s really going to show me my place, right?” She pinched the little clasp and cracked the door open just a bit. The little sailscale inside bolted forward and tried to make a break for it. She had her neck stretched out of the cage, her wings were almost clear of the door before Mirin snatched her out of her stride. ”Oh no. What do you think this is? You think I’m just gonna let you fly off into the sunset?” she laughed and wrestled the little sailscale into a harness and a leash. The little thing struggled and flittered around, desperately trying to get out of Mirin’s range before finally settling on top of the cage, crying out in near agony. Mirin couldn’t help it. She was just so cute when she was upset. She held the leash tight, but she cocked her head to the side with a smile on her face and held out a finger. Before the little sailscale could do anything in retaliation Mirin had her pointer finger on the little sailscale’s head and petting her.

The Sailscale shook her head, jerking it out of the way before looking at Mirin with confusion. It was like she had never been pet before. Mirin laughed and held her finger out again, waiting to see if the little sailscale liked it. She looked at the finger, then back to Mirin, then carefully… so carefully it made Mirin laugh out, the little sailscale rubbed her head against Mirin’s finger, nuzzling against it. ”Somebody likes attention, now don’t they?” Mirin answered the sailscale before rubbing her finger along the top of her head and then moving down to her chin. The sailscale chirruped in satisfaction. ”So does that mean you wannna hang around for a bit then?” she asked of the sailscale.

”If you’re gonna be around you’ll need a name.” Mirin added. Now what would she call her, that was the question. Well she looked spunky. And she looked pretty, so she needed a pretty name, that was for sure. ”Hmmm… well how about… Valya?” The little sailscale looked at Mirin before going back to enjoying her petting. Cool. Valya it is then.

Class Quest Solo

((Mirin is constantly bossy and wanting to take control of all situations, with her brother being hurt she has to deal with her feelings when she can’t control the outcome.))

It was already well past noon and the forest floor of Jauhar was humid and muggy in the late summer day. Mirin tugged on her shirt, it felt all too stifling in this weather that was for sure. She knelt over and scooped up Valya from the floor and onto her shoulder. She had been behaving rather well lately, and Mirin couldn’t help but scratch her under the chin. ”I think we should get you a snack, huh?” She tweeted out to Valya. The little sailscale wriggled her butt and chirruped in excitement. She knew what the word snack meant.

Mirin hitched her bag up further onto her shoulder and grabbed a hold of the bark on the nearest tree. She scurried up, her feet finding their hold easily enough and made it up to the first set of branches. With a small bounce in her step she took off toward home, knowing the way, the interwoven branches were like the veins in her blood. Within an hour she could see the lights of her village glowing, she was almost there. She reached the first rope bridge, the other end of which leading directly into the center of town. With every step the wooden floor of the bridge bounced back up to meet her, but she was home. She nearly ran to her house, the same fashion she did almost anything and only when she reached the front door did she screech to a halt, her hand ready to pull on the doorknob.

It was only when she stopped that she could hear the noises coming from inside. It was all hushed whispers and from the sound of it there wasn’t anything cheerful in their tones. Mirin thought she could hear her mother and her father from inside… and… one of her brothers? Maybe two? It was hard to tell, the three of them sounded almost the same. Mirin furrowed her brows and pushed open the door. There were three people standing, her mother, her father, and her middle brother, Masus. The looks on their faces just screamed concern to Mirin, and she couldn’t help but feel that something was very wrong. They stopped short in their conversation and turned to look at Mirin. It was almost like they couldn’t decide what to do with her. She hesitated before finally opening her mouth to speak. ”... What’s going on?” She almost echoed in the house, the others were all too quiet. Her mother pulled her forward, sitting her in a seat. ”Mirin… There’s been an accident… with Relni.” Her mother started. Mirin felt her stomach sink. Relni was her oldest brother, the one she looked up to the most in skill set, aside from her mother and father. She listened as her mother told her what had happened. There was an accident, one of the radaku was acting up, and they scared the janarim they were trying to train these past weeks. The janarim lashed out, and got Relni with its claws in the chest. Relni was being taken care of in his own home, but things weren’t looking promising for him.

As her mother finished the story Mirin couldn’t help herself. She shot out of her seat and ran for the door. She needed to be there with him. To help him! She raced for her brother’s house, her mother yelling for her to come back, but Mirin couldn’t listen. She threw open the door and called out for him. His wife was washing blood out of a cloth in the kitchen and Mirin could see the look of despair on her face. She wasn’t equipped to handle this. She rushed to his bedroom and from the doorway she could see the horrible condition of her brother. He was pale and sweating, his lips drained of color. His transitioning white skin was tinged red with the dried blood peeking out from under his bandages. He was in a restless sleep, the healer still working solidly on wrapping and patting a salve over the bandages between the layers. It looked to Mirin like each layer was quickly turning red with blood by the time the next layer was added.

Mirin slumped into a seat in the room and felt the wave of misery wash over her. What could she do? How could she help? She wracked her brain for an answer before finally realizing that there was no answer. There wasn’t anything she could do to help him. She felt defeated. It crushed her to know that there was absolutely nothing she could do to help, she had no say in the matter. All she could do was uselessly twiddle her thumbs and hope for the best. What kind of a way of life was that? To just hope things got better. She could scoff at the idea. She grumbled from her seat and pulled it forward toward her brother’s bedside. She looked down at him, the healer had already left the room, and she felt despair and anger welling up inside of her. He looked so sickly, his breathing was shallow and labored. The healer had said that things would be touch and go for a while, and he might not make it. The very idea of it was infuriating for her. How could something so simple of an accident put so much strain on a person and their family?

She huffed in discontent and slumped back in her seat. Well, until he got better - because he would get better, Mirin refused to believe otherwise - she would do everything she could to help him, no matter how small. She would change his dressings, feed him, wash him if she had to though she hoped that would be something his wife would do). She wouldn’t leave his side until he was certainly not going to die, training her sailscale was just going to have to wait. That was something she could do, and something she could control she thought with determination.
