L E A R N I N G x S O L O Sift Through the Night The White Witch came and took Pappy away.
Normally the prospect of being left alone was a delight, rather than a chore, but anytime it involved that harbinger of blinding light, Suluksati, Vazarri only felt contempt and bitterness. Why would Pappy leave with that woman when she and Keke still needed his attention? Daddy refused to come home after he'd been ganged up on (and who could blame him? Zarri wouldn't forgive such treachery, either) by Sam and his alleged 'friends.' With neither of her parents around to swoon and dote upon her, the young Diabi was losing her very valuable patience.
Sure, she and her brother were growing up well enough, but that didn't mean much if their parents weren't there to see it! Zarri muttered softly in discontent. She didn't want to be abandoned by both of them... One was quite enough. She sat at the precipice of her cave, looking down into the ravine below, with her shoulders hunched and her head tucked low. The shadowy night meant that even with her affinity to darkness, she still couldn't see more than three feet in front of herself.
Daddy would've known the best tricks to play in the night, while their Gaili family slumbered away. How was she supposed to become a practiced magician if she had no one to teach her tricks? Even Keke could get away with watching Samael practice his magic. But Zarri was supposed to... Supposed to what? Learn by herself? With no one around to praise how well she was doing or exclaim over the great strides she was making with her magical knowledge?
How droll...
She turned to peek over her shoulder at her brother's sprawled and sleeping form. "I'm going down there," she warned him, expecting and receiving no answer. She rose to all fours and daintily hopped down a few inches to land lightly on a small perch just beneath the lip of the cave, shrouded in shadows cast by the tall crags. Another hop and she was swallowed in blackness, her dark scales doing nothing to make her more noticeable to the wandering eye.
She should feel happy here. She should feel safe and protected within the element of her clan's prowess.
But she did not.
Even though she was born a Diabi, being blind in the darkness did nothing to settle her nerves, calm her heart, or ease her frustrations. With a tiny squeak, she turned tail and scrambled her way up to higher ground, clawing desperately at the rocks and sending tiny pebbles spiraling into the depths below.
Daddy would've laughed at her. He would've cooed about how adorable her cowardice was and rewarded her with nuzzles of affection for her attempt; failure though it was. He would've flicked her with his downy tail and told her the secrets of their magic; secrets Vazarri had to discover for herself now.
'Don't be frightened, little Princess.' The memory of his voice was like velvet, and it swaddled her in comfort even now. 'A proud huntress like yourself need not fear the darkness. It's everything inside; everything that can neither see nor hear you coming, everything that is smothered by this all-consuming pitch that need be frightened.' In her mind, Oblivion leaned over the precipice, touching his maw to the shadows and blowing. Like a plume of smoke, the darkness rose, catching all in its wake and covering it with thick smog.
She'd seen him use magic before. He'd defended himself with it against Pappy and his friends. Zarri puffed out her chest, inhaling a gulp of air and pinning it in her cheeks as she squinted down into the shadows. Hers to bend, if she'd only try. She shot the air from her maw, hissing it between her teeth as it ruffled at the shadows. It wasn't the enveloping smog she imagined Levi could create, but she could almost imagine the darkness shifting. tendrils of blackness reached up to caress higher grounds, flickering with Zarri';s magic for only a second before the moonbeams chased them away.
Daddy would've been proud.
'Beautiful work, Vazarri, Daddy's intelligent, marvelous girl. It's bothersome when they don't obey the first time, but they'll come around. Try again.'
Zarri shifted her claws on the rock, settling herself down more comfortably as she stared below. Another inhale, drinking the shadows in before letting loose again.
Practice would be easier if she didn't have to use so much imagination.x x Results: Practices using Diabi magic and imagination. Word Count: 744

My brother and I have decided to undertake a great new mission. I... haven't seen fit to be forthcoming with finer details, but Keke has never shied from adventure, and I don't expect him to now, even if the true purpose elludes him. he won't back away this time. Not when I need it... Not when I need to travel to foreign lands of shadows and bring Daddy home. Kekeovonnai forgets and forgives, but I do not.
We will cross the desert. We will find the shore, and from there... I do not know. I expect I'll be able to make it across the sea somehow, although... I've never tried. I've never been around so much water. It might be scary... But Keke will be with me. Keke and my hopes for the future. I still feel strong and fresh. I will go and achieve my goals! I'll bring my family back! Results: Left home with Keke. Word Count: 1045 JR Word Count: 152

P R P x R E F L E C T I O NDarkness... For a Price Two-leggers are more greedy than I imagined. In order to pass to Soudul, I must acquire something they need. Gold. I don't know where I'll find it or how I'll obtain it, but I don't have any choice. Perhaps if I'm lucky, I'll find something even better. It's such a surprise they weren't interested in having me aboard just for the sake of me being with them, though. My mere presence should be worth far more than a few shoddy minerals. Two-leggers are such stupid creatures.
For now, I'll take my leave from the docks. When I return, they won't be able to refuse me passage to Daddy's homeland. Soon enough, we can be reunited. He'll be so pleased to see me- us. I have Keke with me after all. But first, the gold. Or whatever I must obtain. I can't stray too far from here to find it, so whatever it is will have to be located close by...Results: Zarri and Keke are refused transport. Word Count: 942 JR Word Count: 160

T A M I N G x R E F L E C T I O NThe Great Vazarri Stands Alone! I didn't expect to find myself alone now that I'm so close to setting my claws on Soudul soil. Will it feel like home once I'm there? Or at least more of a home than the mountains? How long will it take me to find Daddy? Soudul never sounded as big as Eowyn. And it's supposed to have more trees and grass and leaves. It should be much more comfortable. Probably more than this sandy beach I had to wait on for Keke's return.
While I was waiting, this strange creature spoke to me. I think it said it was a gee-gee-o-mar and it seemed excited to hear of a clan that didn't keep any as pets. Or aids, or something. It was new to me, whatever it was. Kinda cute, with dragon wings and little ears. Just a little smaller than me. Even if it was a good size for a snack, it was friendly and invited me to its den for the night, so that I wouldn't have to wait out on the beach for Keke.
In exchange, I had to point it towards Pappy's clan, but that seemed fair. If Keke hasn't returned by tomorrow I'll have to find a new place to stay and find some food to eat... It's a little nervous-making, but... with any luck it won't be for long. I want to get to Soudul now. Results: Taming failed. Word Count: 942 JR Word Count: 233

L E A R N I N G x S O L O Tap, Tap, Pounce By the time midday came around, Vazarri felt nothing, if not a lingering empty pit in her stomach. The rolling rumble that shook through her frame was a testament to exactly how empty it was. The giogimar had offered her a breakfast snack before departing, but it was gone in only a few bites, and now, several hours later, it did her little good. She was accustomed to being well-fed and cared for. This... 'hunger pangs' business was nonsense. The Diabi moaned and rolled to her side in the sand, feathered tail-tip flicking up to caress her underbelly soothingly.
But no caress could yield the same satisfaction as food.
And no food would come to a khehora child that lay moaning in the sand.
Zarri knew and understood this, but it certainly didn't help her to rise any quicker.
It was only the quiet pitter-patter of a sea bird's webbed feet scuttling across the packed wet sand that made the Diabi's head rise. She looked at the small creature; watched it carry a shall off toward a rock. The bird was only worth a few mouthfuls, and the shell was practically useless. But as far as Zarri's eyes could detect, it was the only specimen worth eating within her immediate vicinity. Her tongue flicked out to curl around the side of her maw, even as the creature moved farther away.
No doubt it could fly, which Zarri could not. It could make a quick getaway to the sky if it spotted her. She could try and magic it, but her powers were weak when the sun still shone. Even the tiny bird would be able to escape. Her ruby gazed paused on the creature as it bludgeoned the shell against a rock. She'd watched Pappy (and Daddy and even Keke) stalk after their prey. She wasn't personally interested in it, since it seemed like such a disgustingly messy activity. And listening to the bones of prey-animals snap was really quite revolting.
But she was hungry. And the bird had such a small stature, it couldn't possibly feel any large degree of pain. She'd just have this one snack, and then Zarri would be fine until Keke returned with more food. Surely.
Licking her chops, Zarri silently rose to all fours. The bird had wandered of behind her, toward a small rocky outcropping near the water. The sound of the waves washing to and fro would mask any noise she made. The wind carried both of their scents off away from the water. And her shadow... Her shadow cast toward the bird, but with a strained pulse of magic she tugged the darkness from the sands and molded it into smokey wisps that cascaded over the water.
Vazarri held her focus on keeping her shadow from alerting her prey. She moved slowly, silently, carefully putting one paw before the other and holding her wings and tail stiff. The sand shifted beneath her weight, making stabs of anticipation run through her veins with each step.
But the bird knew nothing. By the time Zarri was within pouncing distance, the creature had already ripped its mealy morsel from the shell and had its head tilted back as it gobbled the insides.
She lurched forward, claws extended to hook the creature even as it screeched and thrashed and tried to scramble away. By the time it noticed her, it was too late. Zarri's nails drove through feathers, dragging it backward and toward her maw. Teeth pierced flesh, and she gave the shrieking bird a few violent shakes, sending feathers and dollops of blood spinning out around the sand.
When all was said and done, the sea bird was limp, eyes still gaping wide and bones jutting through its frame. It was disgusting to look at. Even Zarri believed so. But she was hungry; a hungry predator. And predators hunted for their meals.

H U N T x R E F L E C T I O NTasting Moonbeams I don't generally like to be left alone. It's not that I can't function by myself. I just find life is a little more boring without someone around to admire and worship me. And, to be frank, it's nice to have someone to converse and play with. I'm used to having Keke around. Yes, sometimes he wandered off, but when he did, I always had Daddy or Pappy at my side. And if Keke was gone, of course Pappy would play with me. So I'm not... entirely accustomed to being alone.
Keke went out to hunt for us, and I stayed behind on the beach to guard the two-legger gold. I didn't think he'd be gone all day... But he was, so he better bring back something good. While he was gone, I met the selala (a beach-going two-legger told me the name). They were beautiful creatures. They seemed so carefree and lighthearted (inasmuch as animals can be, I suppose). They were like tiny, glistening water-stars. Until they weren't. The whole group leaped out of the water as one. They fluttered in the sky, almost like they were singing and dancing.
But it was short-lived. Beautiful, but short. The returned to the ocean, and I didn't see them again. They were so free. I should like to be free like that. One day soon, maybe. When I'm back on my home continent, maybe. Results: +13 EXP, +5 LUK EXP Word Count: 1523 JR Word Count: 233
