Waiting on the beach had quickly become boring. Now that she realized Keke would come in his own time, sitting in the same spot whilst awaiting his return seemed like such a ridiculous thing to do. Sure, Vazarri hadn't expected him to be gone for a whole day, but that didn't mean she should sit about waiting. Waiting was a useless past time. It implied a sense of anticipation that distracted her from useful things like resting and day dreaming and hoarding new things. She was at the beach! A place she'd never been before now! There must be many interesting and new things her for her to collect.

Especially- her ruby gaze traveled toward the edge of the ocean- in the water. Pappy disliked the wet. He wasn't interested in letting his young ones venture off into the water where he could not guard them. And even if he was, there was nothing so expansive as the ocean anywhere near her home. All of the puddles she'd splashed in were shallow and dirty, with thick bulbs of mud at the bottom and covered in rocks.

But not the ocean. Vazarri strode forward toward the water, agreeably letting it lap up toward her claws. It was cool, cold even, unexpected when she was accustomed to the sun-warmed puddles of the mountains. But unlike the mountains (to her delight), there weren't sharp stones underpaw. She didn't sink into an oozing vat of mud that she'd need to spend hours preening from her feathers. Instead, the cool, smooth, shifting expanse of sand ebbed with the tug of water, leaving her with the sensation of drifting away without actually moving.

Ahead, the liquid wasn't exactly clear, but the wispy smoke clouds that sprung up at her movement were just as easily carried off, leaving her to peer down into darkening blue-green water. She waded in up to her haunches, wings and tail curling up above the water to stave off the wetness. Here the waves had less of an impact, and they rolled by her without giving her too much trouble.

Vazarri scuffed a claw in the sand, sending up a thick plume of ocean-bottom debris that hung in the water like a cloud. She scrabbled about anyway, plucking up anything that felt as though it might be of interest for inspection. Mostly she uncovered small, craggy rocks, broken bits of shell and glass, and much clinging, salty seaweed. For a time, those things held her interest, until she realized the shells came in an unbroken form as well, and noted how the seaweed was liable to get matted in her feathers.

But her most important discovery: there was something illusive in the water.

At first, she'd mistaken it as her own shadow across the smokey sand-clouds, but it moved in ways she did not, and it was small in ways she was not. It zipped and zoomed through the clouds, always constantly out of reach of Zarri's claws, and yet, always close at hand, as well. When more than one shadow crossed paths at the same time, she realized there were others. She looked closer. Several others. They were tiny, over shaped things, and they were quick like... Like little water-birds, flying through water instead of sky.

Her tail swished.

She should like to see one through more than just a plume of smoke.

Zarri waited, holding her body rigid and waiting for the sand around her claws to dissipate. She waited for the moonlight to strike the water just so, so that it speared through the murky blue-green liquid and landed on... Something glimmering. But it was gone in a wink. A second later, there was another shining flash, and then another, and then two more, all gone as quickly as they'd come.

Delighted by this new find, Zarri beamed. They were creatures of some sort! Small, shimmering water specimens! And in her mind, it was only in good fun that they fled. If they'd really wanted to escape her, they would've left already. But they didn't. They stayed at her side. They lingered and glided around her claws, swimming careful circles around her and each other.

Vazarri grinned into the water, tipping her head this way and that to try and get a read on each of the tiny bugs. "Do you want to play with me?" She asked them with a wave of her tail and a flick of her wings.

There was no answer, save for the fact that they all continued to linger around her, but that was plenty enough of a response for Zarri. Beaming, she pounced into the water after them, sending up sprays of sticky salt-water dewdrops that littered over her scales and feathers. Later she would realize (and complain) that salt water made her body feel tight and dried out, but for now, she felt excitement. The tiny fish-bugs wanted to play! They didn't flee from her!

She leaped after them, wandering deeper and deeper out into the water, and always coming up empty-clawed. The fish bugs continued to zip through the water, just out of reach, just quick enough to avoid capture. And to Zarri, that was fine. They were small and easily broken. She was under no obligation to bring harm to the creatures who wished to stay at her side. And even now, as the water lapped up against her maw, catching them would be near impossible. The liquid dragged at her movements, slowing her, and the fish-bugs were as quick as ever. Though the only evidence of their existence now was their faint twinkling in the dark water.

Vazarri's tail swished through the water in contemplation. It sure was dark down there... Too dark for even her eyes. She crouched down several inches, letting her nose dip fully into the water and closed her eyes. Stilling her breath and excitement, she reached for her magic, tugging on it to locate the rippling sensations of the fish-bugs gliding through the darkness. When she felt the hazy notion of movement, she yanked, straightening up as she did.

The creature burst forth from the water, a wispy stream of pulsating dark following after it. The animal basked in the moon's glow, kissing the moonbeams as tiny translucent wings unfurled from its side. Its wings hummed as it swam up and up into the sky, then dipped down, splashing silently back into the water.

Zarri gaped.

Because completely of their own power, the others followed. The whole swarm (school?) of them arced up. Streams of glittering water droplets followed each ascent. Glimmering wings unfurled. The bug-fish danced to the hum of their own wing beats, each one swiveling through the moon's radiance for a brief time before sailing back into the water. It happened all around her, more than the young Diabi could count. And it was beautiful, wonderful. So much so that Vazarri could not summon the wherewithal to pounce at the creatures, as much as she thought she would've liked. Alone they were interesting, but together, they were radiant. And risking harm to one may disrupt the group.

Slowly, so as not to disturb them, Vazarri shuffled back toward the bank. She didn't turn her gaze from the scene, and as she moved backward, she only opened herself up to more sky-flying fish-bugs. They flew overhead, dusted her with streams of water droplets. They hummed songs in her ears. They glowed with delight and satisfaction.

And then they dipped. One by one, the glittering creatures receded back into the water. The humming of wing beats quieted, glittering droplets splashed back into the expanse, and the fish-bugs departed. Even once back in the water, they didn't stay to temp Vazarri with play. She felt for them with her magic again, but as quickly as the shadows had started, they were gone.

By the time Zarri stood on the bank once more, everything, save for the wind in the reeds and the waves on the sand, was silent. There were no traces of fish-bug.

And yet, satisfaction blossomed in the young Diabi. She had ventured from home against her father's (and likely her brother's) wishes. It probably seemed childishly impulsive to them, but she was a growing young khehora and needed a little freedom. Something like "The Show of the Fish-bugs" never would've been possible if she'd stayed beneath Pappy's wings. And to miss something so marvelous simply because her father was a little afraid of water seemed so wasteful. Keke especially would've liked it, if he'd been here.

He was loud and probably would've scared them off, though...

Nonetheless, she'd have to explain it to him in great detail upon his return. For now, she should probably head back to the reed beds and set up a nest for the night. She'd want to depart as soon as Keke did return, and braving the two-legger's boat would require much skill and patience that she wouldn't have if she didn't sleep. If even Eowyn could offer a grand show like this, surely Soudul would have many more pleasant things to experience. Better, more beautiful. With Daddy.
