While Tink was naturally curious, she was also naturally stupid, which meant that her curiosity was easily satisfied by superficial information that might have had someone else digging for more. She knelt down to cup the water in her hand and for a moment forgot that he'd asked her anything.
"Oh," she said, when she abruptly remembered. "Oh. No. Not yet. I want to. Someone said," she commented absently, letting the water run between her fingers, the inky blood and her own washing away, "that maybe I ought to go to learn to stop bringing bad luck on myself, but maybe they were just being mean." She said this skeptically, as if the idea of someone being mean was ludicrous. "Do you think maybe they could teach me that at your school or are they too busy giving history lessons?"
From anyone else this would have sarcasm, a sly dig. From Catinka it was just a sincere and slightly troubled question.
