Solo 01: Hello Journal
Date: 20 July 2014
Word count: 448
Notes: Yaima tells a little bit about herself in the first entry of a journal given to her by her trainer.

Hello Journal,

Carlos gave this to me because I like to talk. He said it would be a good way to remember my day because I would be writing it down instead of just talking about it. I think I know what he’s getting at.

What can I say about me? Now that it’s sitting open in front of me my mind draws a blank, just like this page! I guess I’ll start small and write more as the ideas come to me. It's hard to write much without thumbs anyway.

I’ll start with Carlos. He’s a normal-sized human with blue hair. I once heard him say that the drapes match the carpet but I don’t really know what that means. We have mini-blinds. Actually, I can’t really describe our house in general. We don’t do much in there, so I rarely give it much thought.

All the interesting stuff happens in the outbuilding, our “garage.” In there you can hear sawing, hammering, soldering, engines, creaking and bending metal and wood, blow torches, hammering, ticking, and all sorts of interesting noises. It’s like music. The ceiling is over two stories high so the beams overhead don’t catch our projects. Carlos mainly works on cars and other vehicles, but sometimes we get special projects that only he seems to know how to fix. We also sometimes start new machines from scratch when work is slow. You can sometimes find him in there late at night working on a blueprint. They’re always intricate and fascinating, I could get lost in them for hours but I’m usually too tired to keep my eyes open. But when I sleep, I dream of the machines they will become.

Carlos and I met when I was very small. He says I was an eevee back then but I don’t remember much at all about my life as an eevee. He also says that I came from a breeder that he knows personally and that when I did come to live with them, I was already a vaporeon.

I vaguely remember a woman that he loved very much. Carlos says that she gave me to him as a Valentine’s Day gift. She was obsessed with pink. Then she was gone and he was very sad. I did my best back then to be his rock and grow quickly. That’s probably why I don’t remember much about life before I was a vaporeon; my focus in life was set and I don’t like to look behind me.

It’s getting late. Carlos says it’ll be a busy day tomorrow, so I guess this is a good place to stop. How does one properly end a journal entry?

Solos 2 & 3: About Frank, and, I don't understand!
Date: 20 July 2014
Word count: 1250
Notes: Yaima talks about Frank the Onix and her own wish to be something more (Star Finding solo).

Dear Journal,

Do I need to open with ‘Dear Journal,’ every time? I’m not writing to anyone else. I suppose I could say, “Dear Self,” instead. But that sounds a bit narcissistic.

Anyway. One would think by the subject at hand, Frank, that this would be about her. Well it’s not. It is written from my point of view, therefore, it’s about me. Yaima Ondine Kardunn. Naturally.

Her name is really Francisca. I know this because I helped Carlos give it to her. I mean, who names a girl Frank anyway? Who does that?

This is a much better name. It’s strong like the name Frank, but feminine too. You wouldn’t know it at first but Frank is quite feminine herself. She likes pretty things like most girls do. She wishes she was more delicate and pretty. But she’s made of rough-hewn rock, there’s little chance of that, right?

I don’t really understand the reasons for why or how Frank came to live with us. But I do know that she was owned by a spoiled brat of a boy who, get this, thought that Frank was a boy. Don’t you know how to sex your own pokémon? Really? Well, I suppose if everything in his life was just handed to him on a silver platter that maybe he simply wouldn’t know. Then it was his parents’ fault, wasn’t it?

Carlos ended up with Frank after meeting this boy. He brought her home in a pokéball and when he released her back home, she was asleep. She was huge, the biggest onix I’d ever heard of (and the only one I saw in real life!) but somehow she was really cute curled up in a little ball like that.

Oscillée was also there as usual, she’s Carlos’ other pokémon, a reuniclus. (I’m a shiny vaporeon, by the way, hence the pink.) We just took one look at Frank and said, “Aww!” I guess we were too loud because Frank woke up.

For all her size, she was the most terrified pokémon I have, to this day, ever seen. She was terrified of her old master, but he was missing, so she was afraid of that too. Somehow she recognized Carlos, but we were in the largest room on his property, the garage, and it was too claustrophobic for her. Apparently Carlos thought she’d be great help with our projects. Guess not!

Hastily, Carlos put her back in her ball and we went outside. After that, when she realized she was in the open air, she seemed to relax.

She’s been with us for about a week now. As the days passed, I showed Frank around. He thought I would be especially good at telling her all about the town. That was pretty astute of him! But we’ve known each other since I was very small so I’m not surprised, really. Oscillée was best at showing her how to move things in the shop. I guess once she realized where she was, she was okay with the “low” ceiling. Frank started to relax and we’ve been working great as a team.

Gotta go, Carlos needs me for something.

- - -

Everything has unraveled all at once. Frank and I went into town to look for some spare parts. Sometimes they are huge pieces of metal. Oscillée is able to move things with her mind but she isn’t always good at steering them, and not for long periods of time. It takes a while to walk back home. This is why Carlos needed a pokémon like Frank so badly. But all that power can be a bad thing too.

When we got home, Carlos had a visitor, so we carefully skirted around them and tried to put things away quietly so they could talk. He calls her his apprentice, Choco Rocco, but she’s still too little to help out in the garage. So when she comes into town with her family, he teaches her this and that. I think they must be relatives or something; it’s really quite strange for them to be that close, isn’t it?

Choco Rocco likes gadgets just like Carlos. But she also likes pokémon. It is her dream to become a pokémon trainer, but to pay for her travels and tournaments by fixing things. Did I mention that she’s about the age of five? How did she come up with this plan? She’s a human! They aren’t supposed to be that together at that age!

But I guess she has a lot of time to think. Carlos says she’s sick all the time. How is she supposed to travel and battle if she’s always sick? Sure, her family travels into town sometimes, but this would be all the time. I don’t understand! She calls it a dream.

I guess I can dream too. I wish to fly.

I also wish to be bigger, stronger. Big and strong enough to protect Carlos.

When we were done putting things away, we sat in the garage for a rest. It was impossible not to hear them. They were talking about pokémon instead of machines. Rocco said she wanted her very own pokémon one day. She doesn’t have any even though her family does, so maybe when she was older she could choose one of her own. She would have a team of metal and robotic pokémon. What a strange girl.

Then she said, “Did you know that onixes become metal when they evolve?”

And Carlos, he said, “Maybe one day when you’re older I’ll let you train my onix.” Or maybe he said “train with.” I don’t remember precisely because I was distracted when I heard Frank utter a very strange sound. Kind of a grunt but not? Then she reared back, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her stand so tall. And she roared and hit the wall behind us.

“Frank! What are you doing?” I still don’t understand.

I saw Carlos shove Rocco away from the building and into the street, then he came running toward us.

She destroyed the whole garage.

I didn’t see it happen though. I could only hear screaming outside. Rocco, surprisingly, has quite a set of lungs.

Oscillée tells me that Carlos was screaming too. His leg and some ribs were broken, but she tells me he was screaming our names. And he wouldn’t stop combing through the rubble until he found me.

I was okay, though I had a nasty bump on my head that had knocked me out. When I was pulled out, something gold fell from the ceiling and gave me a goose egg right next to the one I already had. A metallic golden sheen covered me from head to toe. Carlos said I looked like I had horns, like a dragon. How could he joke like that when he was in so much pain? Maybe it was the painkillers.

Carlos says he’s glad I’m all right and that I “did good”. I don’t understand. I didn’t do anything.

I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t protect him. I couldn’t stop Frank. She’s gone.

I wish I could fly. Maybe I could see from above which way she went. I wish I was stronger. Or smarter. Or a lot of things that I’m not. Wishes don’t come true just because you want them to!

So all I can do is write down what happened and try to make sense of it tomorrow when I wake up. Right now I’m just too tired.
