Noah yelped again and hopped a few steps back. She was short, and letting her get close wasn't doing him any favors. He moved sideways in a circling motion, feeling Lazarus almost thrumming in his hand. When the weapon pulled again, he lunged, going in for a rapid sideways attack, but the sand slid under his foot and he stumbled, his swipe going well wide of its target.
Lazarus noted with some satisfaction that his handler had ceased thinking of his opponent in terms of female and switched to a more prey-oriented mindset with ease. Trainable.

Noah slipped, his swing going wide, and Peyton saw an opening.
Small hands wrapped around the other trainee's arm, pulling him further off balance as she swept her foot at his legs. Throwing him down and coming down on top of him to drive one delicate fist into his stomach as she landed.

Noah scrambled for footing in the shifting sand --
-- and then something happened that he didn't quite understand, except that it ended with him on his back and the small, delicate-looking girl sitting on him. He squeaked, and the blush from before returned instantly.
The fist she drove into his stomach rapidly reminded him that yes, fighting, bad time to get distracted, and he twisted under her and threw her off with the ease of a younger sibling who'd been pinned about a million times. This time the foot he dug into the sand found purchase, and he scrambled free and aimed a kick at her butt in the process.

it wasn't really all that hard to throw Peyton around, she was tiny, light weight. Noah dislodged her, and she had to dig her feet in to keep from stumbling, at least until a well aimed kick to the rear sent her to her knees.
Well if they were kicking, two could play that game. Peyton braced her hands in the sand and kicked out behind her, nailing the other trainee in the shin before scrambling to her feet in the sand.

Jordan grinned when he saw Peyton knock the kid down and pin him. He laughed without quite meaning to when the kid then escaped, with a parting shot on his way up. "Unsportsmanlike conduct," he yelled jokingly.
Good fight, he said to Ferros. Both participants were taking it seriously and giving it their attention and energy.
Ferros rumbled contentedly in response, agreeing silently.

Spectating
"Noah, you limp d**k, hurry up and knock her down!"
At least the Lifer was getting some support . . . ? Sort of . . . ? As much support as Jack normally gave anyway.

Noah jumped when he heard a yell directed at him, and then a second one. He risked a glance up and saw that Jack had joined the unknown man in watching the battle. Ohgod people were watching now.
Distracted, his swing went wild, barely scratching Peyton.

He'd had every good intention of showing up to Peyton's fight early, but between one thing and another found it in full swing by the time he meandered up, hands in his pockets, toothpick in evidence. No sooner did he get within earshot than a yell broke out and he realized he was not the only person in the audience.
He settled in across the field from Jordan, studiously not looking at him. And equally studiously not making a single noise of encouragement.

A jump back saved Peyton from anything worst then a glancing scratch.
Where Noah was distracted by the crowd, Peyton was energized by it, and that enthusiasm and drive only seemed to increase when she caught sight of a silent individual keeping tabs on the match opposite Jordan.
She grinned, exceptionally pleased, and lunged forward, striking while her opponent was still recovering from his wild swing. Her blade came up, slashing across his chest before she drove her heel into the sand and jerked her arm back, driving the pointed tip between his ribs.

Noah staggered back, his hand clenching nervously on Lazarus's handle as his mind spun with the thought that he was going to lose with people watching, going to lose in front of Jack, and he swung wildly at Peyton, looking a bit panicked.
BITE HER, Laz barked impatiently. DOESN'T MATTER IF ANYONE SEES. BITE HER!

Another wild swing, but this one sliced a little deeper into her shields. She didn't bother jerking away, happy with the range between them. Close combat was her thing, it was what she excelled at, abd she had the perfect weapon for it.
The dainty Sun drove her elbow up to force Noah's arm away, and when his side was open she brought that hand down hard, knuckles digging for his kidneys.
<A little more, Peyton! Keep it up!>

Noah gritted his teeth at the shock of pain, the tiredness starting to set in, and refocused on Peyton. He set his feet and twisted, bringing his right elbow around to jab into her side and shove her away, then brought Lazarus snapping across to thud solidly into her body just above her hip as he pushed her back.
He might be about to lose, but if he was going to lose he was going to go down fighting.

She gasped as an elbow nailed her side, then gave a startled yelp as the clever sank deep into her hip. He shield was beginning to crack, she could feel it. Just like before, it was going to come down to the wire.
Jerking free, Peyton swung at the other trainee, but her reach wasn't long enough, and point spikes slid harmlessly past him.

END IT, Lazarus growled. IF YOU'RE TIRED, SO IS SHE.
Noah slashed at Peyton's hand as her punch swung towards and past him without making contact, then backed up, breathing hard and willing himself to stay focused. He could do this. He could.

Although he was still simply lounging around like a stray cat, face expressionless, Taym was actually watching with close interest as the obvious gap between the two fighters continued to expand and contract again.
This was clearly going to come down to the wire even more than his own fight had.
Maybe it would end up distracting her, and maybe it would have the opposite effect, but he took the risk: he allowed himself a wolf-whistle.
Please don't miss, that would make him feel really guilty.
