Disappointment and relief were an odd combination, but there you go. "Name's..." he hesitated, went with the surname, the safer, more impersonal option. "Thompson. My secondary auditory cortex is defunct," he continued, leaning back again with his hands dangling off his knees. "Tragic childhood baseball incident. Can't carry a tune to save my life. So you'll forgive me not taking you up on the music lessons." The toothpick slowly traveled from left to right, and back again.

Jerry took a moment to try to make sense of that combination of words. Secondary auditory cortex.... the meaning finally sank in and his expression turned into one of horror, followed by deep sorrow, "Oh... oh! I'm... I'm so sorry that's awful! But I'm sure you could still pick up the drums, right? I can't imagine what it must be like-"

Ahh. There it went. Obligingly, his hands tossed up a tremor, and he stretched out his fingers demonstratively. Normally he wasn't too keen on people seeing his hands shake, but thoroughly thwarting any further attempts on Jerry's part to induct him into the Island band was worth it. "I was never much into music," he repeated drily. "Can't say as I feel like I'm missing anything. But like, whatever works for you, man." Oh god. Man. He was backsliding. Jerry reminded him too much of people he'd known outside.

Jerry caught sight of the tremor, his brows furrowing in sympathy. "You know... if you gave it a chance, there's a lot of therapeutic qualities to music. It ties into an instinctual part of us, you know? I spoke with a stammer until I was like.... ten! If it hadn't been for music therapy, I p-probably still would! Ahaha..." He sighed, still looking like his heart ached for this poor, damaged trainee. "Yes. Yes, I'm going to hold a drum circle again soon, you should definitely come."

"Oh," said Taym suddenly. "With the pot. Not the pot, but the pot. How'd that go for you last time?" It was an innocent enough question--sarcastic, but innocent--because Taym genuinely had no idea what a loaded question that was. "Lots of uh... communing with nature?" Somehow the idea of Jerry communing with nature made Taym choke.

"U-uh.. um... w-well..." His expression fell as he hit a discord on the guitar and promptly stopped his tinkering. "It... um... well, it'll go better next time, I'm sure." At least Rep had shown up.
Even if he had been His Majesty and almost turned it into a very awkward evening and Jerry was glad no drums had been banged.
The important thing was someone showed up. "It was sort of last minute and sudden," He wove a hand dismissively.

He almost felt sorry for him. Almost. No wonder the poor b*****d wanted to drink. "There's a, uh--a corkboard in the cafeteria, you know. Now. You could advertise." He thought of the sad, hand-drawn flyer that would almost certainly result in, with its little untouched row of tear-off tabs, and once again almost felt bad about toying with the guy. Almost. Again. "Maybe someone's got a stash of boo--food to donate. Although given how the beach party ended up, maybe have it more inland. Yeah?"

"Well... I've given out pie and punch and things at past Choir and Band meets! There's... been a lot going on, but you're right!" Jerry beamed. "Perhaps it's time I really push it again! It's been ages... I mean... last time my heart wasn't really into it... and... it's good more people didn't show up anyway um. Things... well... you really aught to be wary of the Shadow infestation in this place," The phrase Shadow Infestation was spat out with the same disdain one would apply to wasps, leeches and in-laws.
"Not much to really go for now since the power's out... but... if we could find something to cook on a fire pit, maybe!"

He stared at him uncomprehendingly, unimpressed, for a long few seconds, the toothpick slowly navigating to and fro before it stopped entirely. "Is it possible," he asked, entirely seriously, "to have any kind of social function around here without it devolving into some sort of forces-of-darkness catastrophe? Maybe you ought to reconsider. I revoke my suggestion."

"Oh, that's just how things go around here. Dangers of the profession, and all that. So!" Jerry suddenly rocked up to his feet, guitar in hand, "Want to help me make some fliers??"

Another long, blank, uncomprehending stare. Another slow to-and-fro circuit of the toothpick. "Not particularly," he said finally. Which, honestly, caused him a twinge of guilt. Jerry had become poor b*****d in Taym's internal monologues. For example: poor b*****d probably organizes these things once a month and has no one show up, and: poor b*****d probably wants to hit the bottle again every time, and: poor b*****d probably gets really excited every time anyway. Taym suspected he'd like him better drunk, especially if he was a horrible maudlin drunk, or a ragey one. Taym liked most people better when they were succumbing to their vices. It made them more like him.

He shifted uncomfortably at the other man's expression before scratching at the back of his head, "Or I could try a different request!" He struck another chord on his battered guitar before beaming at his new friend.

"Colorful markers," his "new friend" repeated hollowly. Colorful markers."That's uh--that's real generous of you," said Taym. He started to clamber ungracefully to his feet to extract himself from the exchange. "But I just remembered I need to... not be here," he finished drily, not giving quite enough of a s**t to cushion that blow at all. Poor b*****d. "Good luck with your drum circle, I'm sure it'll be a rousing success with minimal monster interference."

"Oh," Jerry's expression fell a bit, attention returning to his instrument, "Well, er... thank you." He cleared his throat, "Well... I hope you adjust well to life here," He glanced back up again once he had regained his composure, offering the trainee an undeterred smile.

Oh god. Yeah, that made him feel bad. He didn't show it, though, just shoved his hands into his pockets and gave Jerry a nod. "Thanks," he said. And then, taking pity: "Next time our paths cross be sure and let me know how it goes."
