Subject: 13. Cookies
Berit had never been the sort to back away from a challenge. Having exhausted most of the crafts in her book and being unwilling to repeat most of them the teen had moved onto mastering the art of baking. She was starting with what was supposed to be a simple but rewarding recipe. The chocolate chip cookie, tasty, easy to make but also easy to overcook and thus burn the melty chips of chocolate that made it so desired.
Berit would have to be careful, something that was not the young woman's strong suit. Still she was ready to due this. after pre-heating the oven in her apartment she began to carry out the rest of the instructions.
In the plastic mixing bowl she usually reserved for popcorn the dragon girl carefully placed specific measurements of flour, salt, and baking soda. Basking soda was a weird concept to Berit, soda was normally just a name for a type of fizzy drink but apparently it could also be a weird powder. Did the powder become the drink under the right circumstances then?
Before the Night fury's mind could wander too far, Berit grabbed a long handled wooden spoon and began to mix her ingredients together. This neither looked nor smelled like a delicious cookie thus far and Berit was displeased with that. Also why in the name of sweet dreams did something as simple as a cookie need so many damned ingredients that needed to be combined in different ways. They didn't taste like 20 different things they just tasted like cookies.
Using a larger bowl, borrowed from the techs, Berit then combined butter sugars together, followed by eggs and vanilla. It still wasn't appetizing looking but the vanilla smell was appealing to be certain. Once the mixture was mostly smooth looking Berit picked up the smaller bowl full of dry ingredients and slowly poured them in with the wet ones while trying to stir so that it all blended nicely and wasn't just chunks of different stuff here and there.
The instructions didn't call for it but Berit dripped a finger into the bowl and scooped out a bit of batter to taste. Mmmm, better than she expected. Berit was almost tempted to just eat the cookie dough, that would be admitting defeat though.
Grabbing the bag of semi sweet chocolate chips off the counter she used her sharp teeth to tear a hole in it and haphazardly poured a bunch of chocolate chips into the dough. Again for a brief moment Berit wielded the wooden spoon, eyes narrowed in focus as she mixed the chips into the dough, making sure they weren't all bunched up which was bound to lead to burning.
When that was done the young woman spooned dollops of dough out onto her cookie sheet, spacing them so that when they expanded in the over, for reasons she didn't understand, they wouldn't touch and fuse into a giant pan sized cookie. Although to be honest Berit would have been happy with that.
A short while later once the cookies were done and cooling on on a metal rack, also borrowed, Berit stood back and admired her hard work. A little over a dozen mostly round cookies lay before her. Each had several non burn or badly melted chocolate chips in them and not a one had stuck to the pan after being taken from the oven.
Unless they ended up tasting terrible once cool, which would be weird though not impossible, Berit would be pleased with her first experiment in baking. Cookies were simple enough but a well loved treat and if she could learn to make them on a regular basis, well she might be able to give them away or bribe certain people with the offers of tasty treats. Plus there were other types of cookies that could be cut into different shapes. Someday she wanted to make special dragon shaped cookies, it could even be her signature food!
As she waited for the cookies to cool Berit grinned and began to plan her future. Perhaps baking would turn out to be less boring in the long run than crafting had been.
