Finding the crowd around her to be lifting their brooms almost flawlessly, Dew thought that her broom flying skills couldn't be that bad. She had had some bad luck in the past, so she was a little iffy about flying. Her luck and such things about her seemed to drop to bad luck when she was in a crowd. She really hoped something good would come out of this flying lesson. She really wishes to be the seeker of her team one day or at least a player. Quidditch had been everything her mother talked about when she was around the house and telling stories.
She looked to her broom and called, "up" with a steady voice, preparing herself for the broom to come in her hand.

Flawlessly, just as half-expected, the broom rose into her hand like it took no effort at all. It seemed that she had done everything right and that flying wouldn't be so bad. Maybe Quidditch wasn't a bad idea to try out for. She sighed, not feeling the need to get into that at the moment.
She turned to see the other students triumphantly holding their brooms. It seemed that Gryffindors and Slytherins were quite good at it. She wondered how the Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs were doing.

Jai was ecstatic when the broom rushed up to his hand instantly. He grinned happily and glanced around at the other students. His grin grew even bigger when he noticed everyone was doing really well. This was definitely a great day!
"Thanks Leoben." He replied with a big grin. "You didn't do so bad yourself. Looks like we're all doing splendidly so far."

Aglaia wasn't sure why she was even here. She hated heights and had no desire to get on a broom and fly. Still..for some reason the professor had insisted that she take the flying class along with the other first years.
She kicked a stray rock next to her broom and half-heartedly listened to what the Professor was saying. She stuck her hands in her pockets and glanced around at the other Gryffindors that were standing next to her. Of course they were all excited and ready to try flying. Was she the only one that wasn't looking forward to this?
When the Professor told them to pick a broom, Aglaia slowly made her way over to the broom on the farthest end away from anyone she knew in her House. She really didn't want them to see her fail. She wouldn't be surprised if the broom didn't move an inch. Or hit her in the head or something.
She reached out her right hand and murmured, "Up." and waited to see what would happen.

Aglaia was a bit surprised when her broom actually raised off of the ground, though it seemed to take it's sweet time doing so. It seemed to take at least two minutes before it made it's way to her hand. She grasped the worn smooth wood handle and stroked it gently with her thumb. The broom seemed to quiver in delight. She grinned and glanced around to see how everyone else was doing.
She could see that everyone else in her House was doing pretty well, and so were most of the Slytherins as well. "Hey Jai, Hey Leoben!" She said and waved at them.
She still had a tingly nervous feeling in the pit of her stomach, and she really hoped that nothing went wrong during the rest of the flying lesson.

"Yeah, I'm surprised! You think at the rate some of these guy can catch a ball, this really would be a challenge for them!" Leoben stated loudly, eyeing some of the Gryffindor boys who he usually played with during free time. He got a few "shut up"s for the comment, but it was generally met with chuckles from the Gryffindor's end, which caused him to laugh happily.
Before he could say anything else, Leoben caught sight of Aglaia. "Hey Aglaia--what are you doing all the way over there for? We don't bite--though I can't say much about Jai's collection," Leoben grinned, giving his roommate a sheepish look. All the Gryffindors knew about Jai's insect collection and they even knew about the many escapees. "I could've sworn I felt something gnawing at me in the middle of the night..." Leoben half teased--sometimes he did think he felt something, though. Perhaps it was just his paranoia though.

Brian walked out into the field with an air of confidence. One look at the group and he saw quite the mixture of boys and girls. Not caring about House he found a spot right in the middle. " Morning boys and girls! And of course Teach."
So broom flying, it looked so neat watching it from the ground and his mom had taken him up once or twice. Surely it couldn't be that difficult. " Well here we go! Up!"

Brian watched in slight awe as the broom seemed to smack into his waiting plam before he could even finish the word. "SWEEEET!" Now he was excited maybe he'd be able to follow after his mother and Aunt. Could he be a quiddich player? Only time would tell.

Abby's broomstick rushed into her hand so quickly that there was an audible smack, and she wasn't able to contain the small jerk her entire body did to get away from the sharp pain, nor the small squeak that she emitted. Almost instantly, she held the broom as loosely as she could without it falling, keeping the handle as far as she could from her stinging and surely red palm. Cautiously, she licked her bottom lip, frowning when she realized she'd bitten it hard enough to draw blood.
She tried to change her stance into an easy form, and sucked her bottom lip in her mouth to keep her newest injury from showing to all the other students. She hoped it looked like she was merely nibbling on it, appearing bored, but she wasn't so sure she pulled it off. For good measure, she shot the three Gryffindors across from her a glare. Why is it they were able to get their brooms to cooperate.
She shot another look to Brian who, while unnecessarily loud, would surely take away any unsavory attention from her just by being himself. "Yes, very sweet. Congratulations." She sucked her lip back into her mouth almost instantly after the words, frowning at the copper taste it left there.

Lucian glared at the Slytherins as everyone listened to the Professor. He was listening, at least enough to know what was going on, but his main concern was keeping them far away from him. He was quick to judge, especially those in Slytherin house.
As the teacher walked up towards the brooms, he followed quickly behind, grabbing as decent a broom as he could manage. Stepping quickly into line next to a couple of his housemates, he said firmly and loudly, "Up!"

His broomstick wavered on the ground momentarily, before floating lazily up into his outstretched palm. Muttering under his breath, he snatched it up before it could change its mind about staying.
Lucian glanced around the rest of the students, noticing many who were doing considerably better than him, which irked the Gryffindor. He stared at his broom while waiting for the next step, just willing it to act up again.

"Wow, I'm impressed!" Professor Drake announced, watching as broom after broom shot up from the ground. "Very good," She praised, watching even more brooms shoot up. To be expected from Gryffindors... Professor Drake thought with a smile, and then begrudgingly added, And Slytherins too. It was a bit funny to be praising Slytherins of all people--especially when just ten years ago, she was at their throats with the rest of the Gryffindors. She was more than familiar with their rivalries.
Because everyone was doing so well, it wasn't hard to spot the students having problems. However, before she could narrow someone out--even the Slytherin girl who squeaked at the broom--everyone had their brooms in their hands. "Very nice," Professor Drake chimed, nodding at the kids.
Without any further pause, Professor Drake started the second part of her instructions. "The next thing we're going to do is just hover a few feet off the ground..." I doubt this will be much trouble for this group, but it's always hard to tell so early in the game... "What you need to do is place the broom in between your legs and then push off the ground with both feet--" Professor Drake demonstrated, wedging her broom between her legs and then kicking off the ground just a few feet so she was hovering. "Feel free to tuck your feet near the broom's end but I do not want anyone higher than where I am now!" Professor Drake allowed her broom to rise up off the ground about three feet. "Got it, everyone?--Good. Now have a shot."
Round Two: - Your student is going to be placing the broom in between their legs and then kicking off the ground using both feet. They will then hover over where they were standing. -They are not allowed to actually fly yet. (Remember to roll, by the way. The rolling rules still apply)

It was time for the next step in learning to fly, and Abby was not looking forward to it. Already it had hurt her hands and she felt foolish. But the feeling of foreboding worsened when the professor taught. "You've got to be kidding me!" She started, sneering at the teacher and gripping the broom tight for a moment before the stinging worsened and she practically dropped it. Abby couldn't believe they were going to straddle the brooms like heathens. Well, she could understand perfectly for boys, of course. That was how her brother flew. But every time she'd seen her mother astride a broomstick, it was sidesaddle, like how she rode a horse. There was no way she was going to act like her brother of all people. The nerved!
"It's simply barbaric! How do you expect us to keep our dignity intact?" While she knew it was wrong and terribly foolish to screech like that at a teacher, she really wasn't able to contain herself. Her cheeks turned a bit red and she sucked her lip back into her mouth and put her free hand on her hip, turning her head away from the teacher in a dismissive fashion. Grade or no, she absolutely refused!

Belenus sighed. What a boring waste of time, in which he could be sleeping or reading... but no. This class was a mandatory waste of time. There weren't even any accidents or mishaps he could comment on. Well, at least there weren't any when it came to calling the brooms to hand. But then, why should there be. It was a skill so easy even a fluff-brained Hufflepuff should be able to do with no problems. They were coming up on the moer interesting part of flying now. Actually getting on the broom and hovering. Still simple, but better than nothing.
'You will listen and behave, broom.' He whispered under his breath. 'I am your master for now, and you will not embarass me!'
With that squared away, he mounted the broom gracefully as he had been taught by his favorite uncle. 'Well, here goes.' He pushed off from the ground firmly and controlled.

While it was nothing spectacular, the broom grudgingly rose to the height specified. It had worked just as he had expected, no better and certainly no worse. He hovered, eager to do more, but trying his best to follow the rules -at least for now. He couldn't wait to really fly.
