Startled by Desiderio, Nolan rolled over to try to face him, and sort of crab-walked and scrambled a little farther away - until the man started to hint that something could be hidden underneath the sand. Nolan hadn't ever seen nor heard of a Trapinch before, since he lived his whole life so far in Kanto, but Snivy was now glancing warily at the dips and valleys in the sand pit. The point was made and Nolan froze where he was. But now the questions were cropping up again, flooding his mind while he wasn't getting chased by a savage Cat Ferret pokemon. And this time he gave voice to those questions, timid at first, yet not only was he scared, but he was angry that he was trapped, "Why are you doing this to me? I don't have anything valuable to steal since all my pokemon are such low levels anyway. Hell, I don't even have very much money. It you want it, then take it, but please, leave us alone." Snivy added her two cents, scolding the other trainer and his two pokemon, "Nivvy niv!" But Nolan also hoped to buy a little more time for his Shinx and Taillow to get farther away. Snivy was a problem though, and even though it would tear him apart to see her hurt any more, Nolan didn't want her to leave. And who honestly would steal a Magikarp? So he would make his stand here, and since he knew he couldn't win with a battle, he tried to win with words. "Who are you anyway? Are you one of the gym leaders from around here?" Oh, now the boy was starting to ask the questions. Why? Why, why, why. Desiderio chuckled, slowly at first but then grew louder. He then looked down at Nolan.
"Why? Because I want to see what sort of people you newcomers to Etrua are like. The first one was completely oblivious to how dangerous it is to travel without the right equipment, but she was being mentored by someone from the Pokemon League. And if you must know, I'm not affiliated with those stuck-up bastards from the Pokemon League." he said coolly. "You're way too cowardly and overprotective of your Pokemon. They're going to get hurt whether or not you want them to. As long as they're not dead, you can heal them. Why do you think Pokemon Centers exist in the first place? And at the same time, you allow them to shield you while you run away? You pansy."

Angered further by Desiderio's words, a heat rose in Nolan and he gritted his teeth, but just as quickly he let it all out in a sigh. Well, Nolan already knew everything that was being said right now was pretty much true, but he didn't think he was a coward. He got nervous a lot, and scared, or just plain freaked out, but he wouldn't have left Lavender Town if he didn't have a scrap of courage. However, Nolan was regretting that choice to leave as well right that very second. Snivy was looking at him, waiting for some kind of plan or move, so they could get out of this situation already. Nolan nodded at the Grass Snake and finally, although a bit wobbly on the moving sand, Nolan stood up. "Yes, maybe you're right. I'm no better prepared, and I want to protect my pokemon the best I can. They'll get hurt, because I want to train them, but it's also a trainer's responsibility to know when a battle is useless. You wouldn't throw a Caterpie at a ... a Dragonite, would you? That would accomplish nothing. And I'm not going to let my pokemon fight you, because I know your pokemon already doesn't follow the rules!" "Niv!" In truth, Nolan didn't think he could sway the Ranger's opinion one iota with such a silly speech, but the teenage trainer had a lot to prove. He knew he was bad at this. He knew his pokemon were still puny. But he really didn't like it when someone else pointed that out to him, laughing all the while. "Everyone has to start somewhere ..." But that was more muttered to himself, and he picked up Snivy and Magikarp under the other arm, turned and started trudging through the sand in the other direction. If a Trapinch decided to eat him, well, at least that wild pokemon would just be doing what nature told it to do. It wasn't at all rude or rotten like that stranger. Desiderio listened to what the boy had to say, then shook his head.
"A Caterpie can take on a Dragonite. It's called tactics. And rules? Who determined the rules on how to use Pokemon to fight? The Pokemon League? Those bastards that come out to the beginner areas and fight new Trainers for shits and giggles?" he shook his head. "If you want to start, why not get a mentor? Have someone teach you what you need to know to survive. I know an organization that specializes in raising Trainers to be able to survive any sort of situation. I can introduce you as a newcomer and you can work your way up the ranks. That's a start, isn't it? Having peers like you that you can talk to and learn new things?"
He sighed before walking over towards the other end of the pit and had the Ariados spit out some web for Nolan to grab on to. "My methods may be crude, but I can at least get the job done. I don't have to be your mentor, but it wouldn't hurt if you learned a thing or two about Pokemon."
This twist in personality from attempting to kill the kid to now help the boy was unusual for Des, but he could see potential in Nolan. It all depended on how the boy would develop that potential, and whether he'd use his skills for good or evil.

Nolan had all types of misgivings about this, listening as the stranger went from mocking his weaknesses to what sounded like sympathy and advice. But Nolan was betting it was more like pity, and neither did he really like this guy anyway because of his recruitment methods. Yet when Nolan had already crossed the sand pit without incident nor mishap, and when the spider pokemon spit the webbing to just help, he really was about to call it quits. 'If scaring me out of my wits was seriously this guy's goal, that has already been accomplished.'Snivy clung to the back of Nolan's head as he shifted the Magikarp around to return Dosu to his repeat ball. And then with a grim expression, Nolan wearily climbed out of the sand pit, using the silken threads as purchase. Snivy slid down to hang off his bag instead, the item miraculously still strapped across Nolan's chest through all this, and she would just stare at the Zangoose stoically. But now that it seemed this whole nightmare was over, it was all Nolan could do just to stand. The adrenaline had bled from his system, his hands still shaking slightly from the after-effects, and now he had the enormous task of collecting his wayward pokemon before he could even think about resting next. But he still wasn't done here. Although Nolan couldn't quite look Desiderio in the eye, because he was still struggling with the idea of a Caterpie winning such a hopeless fight against a massive dragon. It made absolutely no sense to him, and as his father had warned, if it sounded too good to be true, then it was exactly that - too good to be true. "How then? What kind of insane tactics would actually let a weak little Caterpie possibly win like that? It would be way too slow to do anything before a Dragonite would knock it out." Nolan was mostly curious now as he focused on getting his racing heartbeat to return to normal. Except standing anywhere in view of Desiderio was making that pretty much impossible. "And the rules are there to protect pokemon, so they don't die. You said it yourself, that any pokemon can be healed so long as it's not dead. Well, the rules make it so fights don't go that far. I mean, why would the Pokemon League break their own rules, because it protects their pokemon too?" This time Snivy didn't make a noise, still staring. The boy did end up taking Skulltula's web to help pull himself out. Des waited for the boy to catch his breath before he was asked questions. Oddly enough, the Caterpie vs Dragonite bit.
"Baton Pass." Desiderio replied simply. "You have your other Pokemon buff up their Attack and Speed with their moves before you pass the improved stats onto little Caterpie with Baton Pass. Of course, a better option would probably be a Rattata, since that can at least learn Quick Attack and Endeavor to not only drop the opponent's health significantly to match the little rat, but then follow it up with a Quick Attack. But the set-up is still the same. You need to rely on your other Pokemon to strengthen the one you want to use."
"As for the League Rules... the League members are testing you. But they're not fighting at your level. You have to prove yourselves to them by fighting at their level, even if you're outmatched. The League can afford to break their own rules because they're strong. They know their Pokemons' limits. I'm sure you've seen a League member call a Pokemon back even though it had plenty of fight left in it. That's because they know that they shouldn't push their limit. To become strong is to know one's own limits, and then to become stronger you have to start pushing those limits." he continued.
Desiderio reached into his cloak and pulled out Scar's Pokeball before calling the Zangoose back. "Limits can be pushed. But don't push them too fast or too hard. They'll break. And that's my lesson. Learn your limits, and seek to raise the bar on them."

(( Gah hahaha, focus sash Rattata! Oh the inhumanity! )) When Nolan glanced askance at the other it was none too friendly, but he was thinking again, and was finally believing Desiderio wasn't actually there to maim and kill him nor his pokemon. For that matter, Nolan was really wondering what the heck Baton Pass even was since he had never come across that move. It was rather exclusive to certain pokemon in Kanto, and Nolan didn't have near enough experience to see it in use. But he'd remember the name of it and he'd find out what it was. Besides, asking Desiderio questions didn't always get clear reply, and Nolan didn't want to further look like a total dunce. However, he could even forgive and forget a little for getting a real answer instead of crud like 'believing in yourself', or talking about some rip-off 'super-secret-awesome training device'. But as for the rest of the advice, that's where Nolan got sore. 'Wasn't it me who was just talking about knowing the limitations of my pokemon a few minutes ago?' Even though he still thought it, he didn't say it out loud. Desiderio had earned Nolan's begrudging respect, and really, he didn't want to make the other trainer angry. As such, Nolan was quiet for a long time, just processing all of this new information. And to even better lift his spirits it was his Shinx that found him first. Obviously Valor and Honor didn't think run-and-go-chase was very fun unless someone was actually chasing them. The two Shinx either sauntered or bounced up to Nolan, rubbing against his legs. Snivy tried to wave them off from her perch on the messenger bag, curtly disciplining them for not coming back sooner. Nolan picked up one Shinx and now he could look at Desiderio steadily. "I know my limitations, and I know this is only my second day on my pokemon journey. And these guys are just as much as a bunch of beginners as I am. I'll get there and ... - but well, you did say something about a group for new trainers. How is that any different than a pokemon school? I know the basics already ... and my - ... I should learn how to rely on myself." SNIVY LV.11 | MAGIKARP LV.11 | SHINX LV.8 | NINCADA LV.9 | TAILLOW LV.7 | SHINX LV.6 | #ooo64 || ProfileLOCATION || Route 3.

(( Sorry, Chuu, but I'm just about to log off. I've had a headache all day, but I'll send you a PM tomorrow, 'kay? )) Hearing a friendly voice, Nincada's head poked out of the sand pit, and the bug called out to Kiera, "Niiiiiinca!" Waving his front legs frantically to help her spot him, he then easily skittered over the surface and climbed out of the hole. Nincada tapped on Kirea's foot once he caught up with her, and he would have tried to lead her to Nolan, but the Trainee had lost track of him after getting kicked. However, Nincada put his bet on Kiera that she would find Nolan pretty quickly - humans had a knack for organizing search parties. "Ni ni ni! Cada." Nincada was unsure she would understand him, but his strange eyes looked at her expectantly, letting her lead the way. The Trainee would follow. And maybe if she didn't understand, her pokemon would be better at conveying the message to her to please take Nincada to Nolan! The reason Des wasn't going to maim and kill Nolan or his Pokemon were because they were too low-leveled and thus wouldn't be any fun for him. It would just be too easy. He slid his hands into his pockets as he watched the boy's Shinx return. "The Ranger Academy. You may have attended a Pokemon School, but that only teaches you about Pokemon, not surviving out in the wilderness. What's going to save you if there's a Wild Pokemon that chooses to attack the Trainer rather than the Pokemon, like what I had Scar do? What if that Wild Pokemon is stronger than your team? What will you do? Run like you did before? That's just begging to be hunted down. Even knowing the basics of survival would keep you alive a lot longer in the wilderness. It takes time to cross some of the longer routes, so there'll be times you have to camp out." he said casually. "Anyway, you should probably head back to one of the earlier routes. Did you get back all your Pokemon?"

Nolan stood a little straighter, his expression clearing, and finally he was entirely won over by the time Desiderio was done speaking. He could buy into the idea of the Ranger Academy, since it sounded more like training the trainer, instead of intruding on his own techniques. It all now added up perfectly in his head, and right then - even though just minutes ago he had been afraid for his life - he could actually laugh off the entire incident. Nolan didn't exactly do any laughing though, because Des's question reminded him he was still missing two more from his team of six. "No ... I still need to find Taillow and Nincada. I'll ..." Now Nolan was hesitating, but for entirely different reasons. "I can't leave without them." It was now understood how ridiculous that sounded, but Nolan couldn't help himself. He had his morals to stand by, and if he did anything like abandon his own pokemon, he would never be able to forgive himself for that. He had been taught to be better than that. Sighing, he quickly went over his options. Snivy had other ideas. The Grass Snake started pointing out into the other direction, a little frown on her face. Then she looked down at Honor sitting at Nolan's feet, dispensing more curt orders, and again pointed from her perch in the bag now. Nolan started to catch on just as the Shinx began to turn to bound off. "Wait." He put down Valor, staying on a knee, and asked the cubs, "Can you find them?" "Inx inx!" Although Nolan didn't understand Valor's enthusiastic cries, he certainly did understand when Honor slowly nodded his head. The more sober of the pair let his yellow gaze slide over at Desiderio for a moment, and was already sauntering off as Nolan stood back up. "I had better go with them. It won't do me any good now to let us split up again. I'll ... well, I'm heading right back to Route One once I find them, and Kiera too. I would like to ... join, the Academy, if that's okay." While before it had been terror, now all that was left was that healthy dose of respect for the other trainer and his pokemon. Nolan was intimidated, itching to escape with his Flash pokemon, but that didn't keep him silent. He looked back at Des. "Thank you though, for that lesson. I'll- ... I'm just glad my mistakes haven't cost any of my pokemon their lives. I'll be at Blyse's pokecenter tonight, if you're serious about the offer. I would be honored to have you as a mentor, if that's okay with you, but I can- I can ..." Nolan cut himself off before he started to ramble, "Thanks, but I have to go find my pokemon now." (( Must train. ... Must help Chuu catch silly shiny. ... Must beat gym once cubs know electric attacks. ... )) Following the two Shinx, Nolan was beginning to get seriously nervous with every step he took. Even though Des made him nervous as well, he certainly could appreciate having a much more experienced trainer nearby, just in case. 'Note to self, stop going more than a hundred feet from Blyse, and stop following crazy optimistic trainers on far-off quests.' Yet then he wouldn't have run across that Zangoose. Shaking his head, Nolan couldn't believe what he was thinking, and instead just watched their path to hopefully spot any wild pokemon before they could sneak up on them. Finding Taillow actually wasn't as hard as Nolan first thought it would be. Honor and Valor stared intently up the tree that the wounded bird had taken refuge in, and Nolan had another rather disturbing thought, "You two don't ... eat Taillow, do you?" Snivy rolled her eyes from her coveted spot riding in Nolan's bag, and Valor just meowed at Nolan since the trainer was making noise! Yay! But now Nolan had Taillow back, aiming carefully and recalling the Tiny Bird to her pokeball. She didn't bother to put up any resistance, because going with the annoying human meant she'd also get into the pokecenter to be healed. As for Nincada? Even Nolan could see the clear footprints in the sand pit when he returned to the place he had gotten separated from the bug. Nincada had followed another person, and they had gone north. Heading that way again, Nolan honestly hadn't gone too far from the crossroads that lead farther north or back to Route 1 that was aimed into Blyse. He had just gone way off the path when he ran into trouble, so the walk was pretty short. Desiderio nodded. "Go. We'll meet again soon. I'll put a good word for ya if that'll help improve your chances of getting in. The guy in charge of registration is a hardass, so hopefully a recommendation will help you get in." he then grinned. "Today's lesson was free. I have some business around Blyse, so I'll try to make some time to come by for a visit. If not, I'll send someone in my stead." He then waved the boy off, watching him follow after his Shinx cubs to look for his missing Pokemon. He waited a few minutes once the boy was out of earshot and sight before bringing his hand up to his face, appearing to facepalm. But then... He laughed. That kind of laugh that started off slow and quiet and built up until it was loud and uncontrollable. He did it. Not only did he successfully deceive a Gym Leader and what appeared to be a Legendary Pokemon in his company earlier, but he had also set fire to Route 1 and had now lied to a naive little brat. Getting into the Ranger Academy? Hah! He had cut ties with those sorry bastards a long time ago! It took years of training to even get in there in the first place! A mere recommendation wasn't enough to get anyone into there! But the boy had invited him to visit him in Blyse City. That gym leader from before was probably going to linger around a little longer and check out the other Trainers, maybe mentor that retarded girl from earlier. And there was still that strange cat that was with the pair. How interesting... it seemed like a challenge. Just how much damage could he get away with under the inept eyes of the Pokemon League? He brought his fingers to his lips and whistled, calling back Wickersham. The little candle giggled with glee upon her return, and Des held his hand out for her to sit on. "We'll be burning Blyse City tonight, dear. Let's see if we can get some others in on the fun." he said with a sinister smirk before he reached into his cloak for his Pokenav to phone base. Maybe mentioning the cat with Dante wouldn't hurt. He could get someone to do some research on whatever it was so that they knew what they could be dealing with. 1

The first part of the route towards the Fort was pretty familiar by now. Nolan was even able to point out where he had caught his Hippopotas, yet he decided not to show her that - didn't know if the Hippo wanted to go back. Walking briskly now, as he drew closer to Route 3, he hesitated for a moment as he look far into the distance at the Fort. Nolan noticed that the weather was much hotter and dryer the closer to the desert he got, the wind blowing sand in. That trek was going to be difficult, and he certainly knew he was going to need help, yet between him and his new friends, Nolan wasn't too worried. Next it was just a matter of them all meeting up again, and then it would be fine. Walking a bit farther with his eyes on Ammoa way out there, hazy in the heat, Nolan didn't see he was heading right into a trap. He had just been searching for some shade to wait for Des under. Then the ground gave in under his feet, and shouting with surprise, Nolan was slip-sliding down a bowl of sand - right towards the gaping green jaws of a pokemon at the center. Nolan tried to twist around to grab the grassy lip of the pit, but it was no good. Swallowed up by the sand, he felt his right foot hit something solid, and then the bear-trap teeth clamped down. Searing pain shocked through his leg, and he groped blindly for a pokeball. Why, oh, why did he put them all in their balls? Servine had started to droop some in the dry heat on the walk, but now he cursed himself for not being more careful. Figures that something like this could happen. Gritting his teeth, Nolan threw the first pokeball his fingers touched - Dosu's Repeat ball. The Gyarados formed suddenly out of the energy of light, and roared down at the diminutive Trapinch. It let go right away, and Nolan didn't even need to give the order - Gyarados dived down and plucked the Trapinch out of the sand pit, holding it clamped between his teeth.
