A Rough Beginning

A muscular, rough-looking man sat outside a large building, hunched over a tiny form he held in his massive hands. This man was Brutus Maximilian Claudius, better known as the sensei of the Inner Strength Dojo, a remote training ground for Fighting-Type Pokemon and their trainers. And the tiny form was a newly hatched Meowth. Brutus had been given the egg from an old and dear friend; they had said it would teach him a valuable lesson. At the time he had merely chuckled, thinking his friend was hinting that he was needing to settle down and have some kids of his own, not just Pokemon; he wasn’t getting any younger. But as he sat, staring at the tiny creature he held, he could only think of his friend now.

She had been with him through thick and thin. She was beautiful, smart, and the only one that had ever truly bested him in any competition they had both entered. Her name was Lira, and he missed her dearly. Only the day before today, she had met an untimely end. Brutus felt responsible, if he had told Lira how he really felt about her… then, maybe, maybe she wouldn’t have left… and she’d still be here today.

He coughed back tears again, causing the Meowth kitten to stir from its nap. It opened its eyes, blinking into the bright sunlight. It had been curled up, but now it stretched, looking up into the face of the scruffy face of the man that held it. A squeaky little yawn escaped the baby Pokemon, causing the man’s mouth to crack into a very small smile. The smile let loose one of the many tears that this normally tough man had kept at bay. Brutus readjusted, moving the little Meowth to one hand so he could wipe the tear away from his face.

A soft, pointed, purple muzzle brushed against the occupied hand. Ayane, Brutus’ Mienshao, who had kept the egg warm while they were waiting for it to hatch, had come to view her adopted kitten. She had also come to be at Brutus’ side. She was the Pokemon that he had started his journey with, she could sense when something was bothering him. They didn’t need words.

The Meowth was placed next to Ayane and she curled around it as Brutus stood up. It felt like the hardest thing he’d ever done. The weight of his feelings were too much, too heavy right now. He had struggled against so much in his life, but this was by far the hardest thing he’d ever faced. “I’ve,” he choked, then cleared his throat, “I’ve decided to name him Yotta. I-I think Lira would’ve liked that.” There was a long, silent pause as he looked off into the distance. Ayane remained silent, watching her trainer, waiting. Several, silent moments later, Brutus turned back towards his trusted companion. Wet lines were drawn down his face. “Come on, Ayane, let’s go introduce him to the other.” He wiped all evidence of his overflow of emotions from his face and guided the Mienshao inside as it carried the newest member of their family with them.

I Wanna Be Like You!

“MEOWTH!” came a cry that rang through the crisp mountain air, followed by a muffled hit. The young Meowth, Yotta, was training on a miniature punching bag that was being held by Goomba, the soft-spoken Breloom. His punches weren’t hard enough to warrant a backer for the bag, but their master, Brutus, wanted to treat all the Pokemon he trained equally. Goomba didn’t mind either; anything she could do to help out was happiness in her mind.

“Good hit, Yotta,” she nearly whispered but kept a warm smile on her face. She was all about encouragement. Yotta smiled and continued pawing at the punchingbag as hard as he could. Training was hard work, but he enjoyed it. Anything he did that made him feel like the others was a blessing.

There were several more minutes of uninterrupted, training bliss before a sharp cackle broke Yotta and Goomba’s concentration. They stopped, directing their attention to the source of the noise. Goomba’s smile faded as soon as she saw who it was; Nix, the Blaziken. The self-proclaimed leader and overall hot-head of the team, was strutting up to the Meowth and Breloom, lackeys in tow. Goomba knew what was about to happen, and she shook in anticipation.

“Oye, whatcha doin’, Goomba?” Nix hissed as she came right up to the two. “Shouldn’tcha be trainin’?”

“I-I’m helping Yotta,” she breathed.

“Wot?” Nix now turned her attention to the little cat Pokemon that sat watching, not really understanding what was happening. “Ya mean this lit’le NORMAL-type?” Nix stressed Yotta’s type as heavily as possible. “Whatcha doin’ dat fo’? ‘e can’t fight like us. We’re FIGHTING-types.” This time, stressing their type. “’e’ll neva be one of us!” She sneered and, feeling like she had successfully crushed the little Meowth’s spirit, walked off, cackling. The Heracross and Machamp that had followed her up, followed her out.

Yotta tilted his head, he wasn’t entirely sure what’d just happened. “What was dat about, Goomba?” His innocence had not yet been ruined; he was still just a kitten by anyone’s standards. And so, he didn’t understand that some Pokemon thought that they were better than another Pokemon just because of their types. As far as he knew, or cared, they were all Pokemon and the ones that lived here were all Master Brutus’ Pokemon. What was not good about that?

Goomba gave a relieved sigh, “It’s nothing, jus-just don’t listen to her, okay?” She repositioned herself behind the bag again. “Come on, let’s get back to work.” Yotta’s enthused smile brought back Goomba’s own. They continued until their session was up without any further distractions.

~*~

Later that day, at dinner to be exact, Yotta was enjoying a nice meal of Pokechow. He had been sitting by his mother, Ayane, before she had gone to go get something to drink. This was a perfect opportunity for Nix. The Blaziken snuck up behind the preoccupied Meowth and shoved his face down into his bowl. He flailed about, unable to break the firm grip of the Fire/Fighting-type. The commotion was brought to the attention of Brutus and Ayane as soon as the returned to the dining area.

“NIX!” Brutus shouted, furious, as he stormed over to the two Pokemon. He shoved the Blaziken aside, causing her to loosen her grip on the Meowth. Yotta, gasped for air as Ayane came to his side, wiping food from his face and comforting the frightened and hurt kitten. Once he was sure Yotta would be okay, Brutus turned his ire back on Nix. “WHAT WAS THAT?!” He got right up in her face and roared. To any Pokemon, Brutus was quite formidable when he wasn’t angry. When he was this upset, he was down right scary. He grabbed Nix by the scruff and pulled her outside in one swift movement. None of the other envied her at this point.

“Are you okay, son?” Ayane cooed, trying to calm his crying.

“Wh-wh-why di-di-did she do th-that, ma-mama? Wh-what’d I do?” Yotta managed between sobs.

“I don’t know, sweetie… Sometimes Nix can be mean. But you didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Wh-wh-why’d she s-say I w-w-w-wasn’t one of y-y-you?”

Ayane paused, trying to think of how best to approach a question like this. As she thought, Yotta’s crying calmed to the point where his breathing was just staggered. She looked down at him and he looked up at her, tears still in his eyes. She sighed, knowing that there was no way around this. “Different Pokemon have different types. These types give up strengths and weaknesses. For example, I’m a Fighting-type, I’m strong against Rock-types, but weak against Psychic-types.” She cleared her throat a bit as Yotta listened intently. “You’re a Normal-type.” She was hoping she’d be able to leave it at that, but she saw the inquisitive look in her adopted son’s eyes.

“What’m I strong against, mama?” His question was like nails on a chalkboard.

“Well, honey, I’m afraid that Normal-types aren’t particularly strong against any type.”

Yotta looked like he was about to start bawling again, instead, he pushed away from Ayane’s grip and tore out of the house. Ayane called after him, but it was too late and he wasn’t listening. He ran for what felt like an eternity, until his little feet hurt and all the stars were out. He collapsed into a sobbing heap in a clearing that wasn’t too far off from the dojo. Yotta’s tear-filled eyes lifted up towards the light-dotted sky. His eyes came to rest on an unusually bright star and he whispered to it, voice hoarse from crying, “Oh wishing star, I wish I could be like Master Brutus!” He choked as another sob broke through.

A bright flash caused him to close his eyes tightly for several moments. When he opened them, a shining object was occupying the clearing with him. It almost looked like a star! His directed his gaze to the sky, where his wishing star had been and noticed it was missing. Was this really his star? Was it here to grant his wish? Eagerly, he walked towards it and reached out a paw to touch it. As soon as he came into contact with the star he began to grow very sleepy. Thinking only the fatigue of having run so far and or crying so much, he crept closer to the star. He didn’t want anyone to take it; this was his wishing star! So, him being exhausted, and the star needing to be guarded, he curled himself around the object and promptly fell asleep.

Wish Granted

Yotta awoke the next morning, feeling very sore; every limb ached. It felt like he’d gone several rounds with Nix. Groaning, he opened his eyes and noticed he was in a bed, but it wasn’t his. Then he noticed something a bit… off. Not only were his extremities pounding, but they felt further away, like he was taller. He sat up slowly, his eyes growing wider as he looked at his body. It’d changed, and not in the way one would expect. He hadn’t evolved; no, he was human! Well, human-like; he still had his soft fur and he could feel his tail… His charm! He gasped, reaching up and almost smacking himself with his unaccustomed arms. His charm was still there, but so was something else. He pushed his hands through it, it felt like really long fur. Yotta paused, clawed hands halfway through his hair; he needed to see himself!

Scrambling and nearly tripping several times over his own, larger feet, he made his way to the mirror that stood on a nearby vanity. Looking into it shocked him. His normally round, kitten face looked like it had been stretched and forced into the shape of a little boy’s. But he still looked kind of like a Meowth. A wide smile tugged at each corner of his mouth until he was grinning ear-to-ear. This was perfect! “It’s exactly what I wished for!” he yelled in excitement and then proceeded to punch and kick the air happily.

The door swung open not a moment after Yotta’s yell. Brutus, his human master, and Ayane, his Meinshao mother, were standing in the doorway, concerned and worried expressions covering their faces. Yotta immediately stopped his celebrations and snapped to a more respectable stance. After a long silence, he cleared his throat and addressed the two. “Master. Mother.” He bowed respectfully.

Brutus had so many questions; he didn’t know where to start. Ayane stood motionless, trying to figure out what was going on and what happened to her son. “What…” Brutus finally started, “What happened to you?” His voice seemed to fail him as the question struggled out. The massive hand that had swiftly forced open the door, now looked to be held up by the frame it rested on.

“I found a star last night and I wished to be like you!” Yotta answered, finding his words easily. He was still very excited about the whole thing.

“You… what?”

“I found a star!” he slowed down, trying to explain everything better. “It fell from da sky because I wished to be like you, Master!” His tail swayed ferociously back and forth. He wanted to go do stuff, like training. He was bored of standing here, just talking. He needed to test out his new body!

“I’m sorry, Yotta, but you found a star?” Brutus continued his querying, trying to wrap his head around the story.

“Yep!”

Brutus sighed, this was definitely Yotta; his enthusiasm was unquestionable. The large man turned to the Meinshao who looked back up at him. They shared some unspoken conversation which ended in them both shrugging and turning back to Yotta in unison. “Are you feeling okay?”

“Yeah!” Yotta shouted, then trailed off, “Well… I am a little sore.” He didn’t really want to tell them he wasn’t feeling 100%. He knew if he did, they’d keep him in bed. But he wasn’t sick! He wanted to do stuff!

Sensing Yotta’s eagerness to train, Brutus stated, “If you feel up to it, you can train, but if it gets too bad, you’ll need to stop.

“Yessir!” The Meowth boy beamed, bouncing on the balls of his feet.

“Alright, go on,” Brutus chuckled and both he and Ayane parted as the cream-colored blur ran past in glee. “There’s no doubt, that’s still our Yotta.”

Dodge!

Another sunny day at the dojo had Yotta training outside in the warmth. He was currently training with Goomba, his usual partner. She was one of the few of the dojo’s residents that didn’t think less of him because of him because of his type, age, of the change he’d gone through. To be honest, she was the only one that treated him exactly the same since he’d changed into the Pokemon-human hybrid. She enjoyed his company as well; he was eager, kind, and didn’t hit near as hard as Nix when they trained. Yotta too enjoyed training with Goomba; not only was he treated the same by her, but she was encouraging him to go to the next level. He saw her as the older sister he never had; and she saw the reverse in him.

One more quick jab from Yotta, easily blocked by the Fighting/Grass-type’s claws and she called time out. Normally when she paused in the middle of sparring, she was wanting Yotta to try something new. Needless to say, he grinned, interested in whatever idea Goomba had. “I was doing some reading,” she spoke in her normal, quiet voice. This statement was nothing new, she didn a lot of reading in her free time; so he waited for her to continue. “Meowths can learn a move called ‘Double Team,’ it helps with evasion. I was thinking we could have you learn it, since Master Brutus wants you working on dodging.”

“Sure! Yeah!” the Meowth boy beamed. It didn’t even occur to him that he may no longer be able to learn or use Pokemon moves. One thought that did strike him though, was how would they train for the move. His smile faltered, “How… I mean…” He growled a little in irritation, not able to voice his concern.

“How will we train for it?” Goomba anticipated his question, her sweet smile still in place. She’d already thought of that.

“Yeah,” Yotta nearly frowned, not catching her knowing tone.

“Well,” she started, clearing her throat with a soft cough, “Excuse me. You’re going to have to dodge… a lot.”

Yotta groaned and slumped on the floor, “But that’s what I’m having trouble with Goomba!”

“I know, I know,” she waddled over to him and picked him up off the floor. “Like Master Brutus says, practice.” The smile never faded from the Breloom’s face Yotta was beginning to think she has something up her sleeve… if she had sleeves.

Once she was satisfied that Yotta was up and ready, she hurried a few feet away and turned around to face the boy. “Ready?”

“For what?”

“Dodge!” She squeaked, inhaling deeply and exhaling quickly, seeds shot out like bullets at Yotta’s feet.

He yelped as a couple hit his toes before he could pull them up, out of the way. He danced around a bit, trying to avoid the seeds. The first two rounds he didn’t do so well, only avoiding one seed out of ten. They took a break, Yotta rubbing his feet as he plopped down on the mats.

“Are you okay?” Goomba asked, worry in her voice.

“Yeah,” Yotta replied, trying to sound like he meant it as he winced while hitting an extremely sore spot. This caused the Grass/Fighting-type to frown and rethink her methods. Yotta did pick up on this, so he stopped rubbing his foot and put on his bravest face. “Ya know, this is probably the only way I’mma learn how to dodge. Wanna give it another go?” Goomba studied him for a moment before nodding slowly and returning to her post. The Meowth stood and took a deep breath, readying himself for the seeds.

He did much better the third and forth times, dodging five out of ten. He was getting there, he told himself. He asked Goomba to keep going; she obliged. They kept going and he kept getting closer, but they were both beginning to tire.

“I… I think… I’ve got… one more…” the Breloom panted.

“’kay,” Yotta replied, holding his knees and breathing hard as well.

They retook their positions and Yotta nodded, ready to go. Bullet Seeds were shot out but something new happened; the image of Yotta began to phase into two. They both got excited, especially since Yotta now managed to dodge all ten seeds.

“THAT. WAS. AWESOME!” Yotta yelled, refilled with new vigor. Goomba wheezed a laugh and took a seat while Yotta hopped around. He was ecstatic to know that he could still learn Pokemon moves, but wasn’t limited to learning them like Pokemon were. This was definitely a new development!

Protecting the Innocent

Yotta was rather excited; today was going to be the day he’d get to train some of the younger students of the Inner Strength Dojo. This would be the first time he’d ever gotten to teach a class, though not the first time he’d ever taught at the dojo. He’d had a few specialized lessons for friends, but they’d only been one-on-one, nothing big like this. He was a strong teen now, though and Master Brutus thought he was ready to be a teacher, even if it was just for a small group of children and their Pokemon.

As he readied himself in his room, trying to tame his wily mane of hair, he was going over everything that he’d need to teach them today. It was the first class for these tikes, but he didn’t want to forget anything. He also didn’t want to bore them, but he was pretty confident that wouldn’t be an issue at least. Once satisfied his hair wasn’t too bad, he straightened his gi and tied his belt around his waist; then nervously restraightened his gi.

He took a few deep breaths before stepping out of his room, sliding the door closed behind him. A grin spread across his face as he strolled down the hall and into the room the class was going to be held. No one had arrived yet, and wouldn’t for a while, so he had plenty of time to set up. He pulled out various practice dummies and made sure they were all the appropriate height for the kids: short. As he was setting up, a familiar Mienshao quietly entered the room.

“Excited for your first class?” came the calm voice. Yotta had been so busy he hadn’t noticed Ayane had entered the room.

He jumped a little, “Oh, yeah, hey, mom!” He finished adjusting the last dummy before turning to her and bowing. “I think I’m just about set up.” He motioned to the room and awaited her opinion.

“It does look that way.”

Yotta smiled again and turned towards her, noticing a rare thing, a smile on her face. This just caused him to grin bigger.

“I am very proud of you, my son.”

He chuckled, “Aw, mom…” He leaned down, since he was much taller than her now, and gave her a hug. “Thanks.” After a few touching moments, he had released the hug and she let him get back to setting everything up.

~*~

The class was going well, there were about a dozen kids and their Pokemon, not all Fighting-types, which surprised and delighted Yotta. There hadn’t been any fights, other than those against dummies, and everyone was grasping the various concepts nicely. It was only natural that everything was going so well, that something terrible had to happen. And it was only natural that that something terrible would be Nix.

The Blaziken walked right in on the class as Yotta was teaching them how to punch properly. She wasn’t one for hiding her presence, so she stomped right up to Yotta, who greeted her with a smile and a pleasant, “Hello.” It infuriated her. He was so happy all the time, and here he was, TEACHING! He wasn’t even a Fighting-type! AND he was a freak! Look at him! He wasn’t Pokemon OR human; he was some weird mixture. How was she the only one that saw this? She snarled at him. “Whatdya think you’re doin’?

Yotta’s smile faltered for a second. “I’m teaching this class, Nix.” The hairs on the back of his neck began to stand on end; he could tell this wasn’t going to end well. “Nix,” he spoke in a hushed voiced so only he and the Blaziken could hear, “This isn’t a time for a fight. You’re gonna give these kids the wrong impression.”

“Don’t TELL me what to do, ya freak!” the Blaziken roared, shoving Yotta back. The kids and their companions all stopped and stared. The humans had no idea what she had screamed, but the Pokemon knew exactly what she’d said. Some looked on with fear, other were a little confused.

“Nix,” Yotta semi-growled, “Don’t.” He straightened, getting between her and the children. He knew she wouldn’t stop, but he had to try. “You’re better than this.”

“DON’T EVEN SPEAK TO ME IN THAT TONE!” She lunged at him, claws out stretched. She was enraged.

“Nix!” Yotta pleaded, easily redirecting her back the way she came with a few moves Master Brutus had taught him. “Stop this.” His tone was serious now; he was done with her constant bullying. “I mean it.” He stared hard at her, preparing for her next attack.

Nix huffed as she stumbled forward after the spin. Her anger was only growing. She spun, temper flaring in her eyes. She rushed him again and Yotta took her arm and laid her out, flipping her over his leg until she hit the mats. Releasing her arm, he tried to show her a last bit of goodwill by outstretching his hand to help her up. She glared at him and swiped at his hand, claws wreathed in flames. Yotta stepped back, clinching his hand in pain; that’d leave a mark.

The foul-tempered bird stood, fire beginning to encircle her hands. Yotta’s eyes went wide, she wasn’t playing. “Nix, don’t! We’re inside!” He was pleading more for the safety of the children than anyone. The children and their Pokemon, by this time, had huddled in a group, many were crying.

She rushed him again, this time more focused on his movements. She took a few swipes, missing him by mere inches. On the third one, though, she connected, catching fire to his gi top. He stopped to pat it out, giving her the opening she needed. A quick adjustment of her feet and grab around his wrist, she pulled him over her back and sent him flying. He landed with a hard thud against the wall.

At this point, she was feeling pretty good about herself, and thought it a good time to boast. She stood up straight and threw her hands out, flames disappearing. “You see, I’ll always be better than you. You’re no Fighting-type, you never will be! And you’re no human either! So stop pretending to be one!” She snarled and spit flame, scaring the children and their Pokemon, alike. At this point, those Pokemon that were not young themselves, moved to the outer perimeter; guarding the younger Pokemon and the children.

Yotta saw this and hoped that there’d be no need for the defensive positioning. He rose, very sore and beat up already, and issued one more warning. “Nix, don’t.” His voice changed from its normal perky tone to one of serious flatness. He was done playing around and he was done with Nix’s constant harassment and bullying. The sudden change in character threw the Blaziken off. She was so used to the plush kitten that the fierce lion that was now coming through scared her a bit. “I mean it.” He glared daggers at her, his fists clenched. An uneasy laugh began to well up on the Blaziken. She was terrified. That look in his eyes was too much for her. But she wasn’t about to give up.

What happened next seemed to happen far slower than it actually did to Yotta. He saw Nix smirk as flames licked at the edge of her beak. As she turned towards the young group, Yotta bolted towards them. He knew there was no way he’d be able to save all of them, but damned if he wasn’t going to at least try. He saw the flames erupt like they were in slow motion, but he too felt that his limbs were not moving nearly as quickly as he wanted. Placing himself between the flames and the group of students, Yotta threw his hands out wide in defiance, shut his eyes, and braced for the flames to engulf him.

But they didn’t. Yotta felt no heat and heard no screams of pain. Bewildered, he opened one eye, then another. The sight before him was a confusing one. There was a glistening wall of shimmering light that seemed to not only be blocking the fire, but it was absorbing it. Yotta thought back, what could be causing this?

~*~

Days before.

“I want you to have this, my son,” Ayane spoke in her calm, collected tone as she handed him a disc in a case.

“What is it?” the Meowth teen asked eagerly as he accepted the case.

“It is a TM. I feel you will find it useful one day, hopefully not anytime soon, though.”

“Protect,” he read, then opened the case and began to go over the instructions on how to use the disc inside. Ayane left him to it.

~*~

Of course! It was Protect! But, this seemed so much grander than what he had read about the move. It was supposed to block the attack for himself, not others. He was astonished, to say the least.

As the flames began to die, Yotta’s resolve returned. The flames dissipated and so did the shield; but as soon as it dropped, Yotta rushed Nix. The Blaziken had had a large grin on her face that immediately vanished when she saw Yotta flying at her, fists clenched. The attack came much to her surprise, leaving her no time to block. Yotta used Fury Swipes in conjunction with his own punches to land several devastating hits on Nix.

The attack left Nix gasping for air on the ground, Yotta standing over her. At this time the noises had brought the rest of the inhabitants of the dojo to the room. Trying to thinking quickly, Nix began to cry fake tears. Yotta’s expression twisted from anger to confusion. The students too, were thrown off.

“What’s going on here?” Brutus burst in, seeing the beaten and crying Blaziken. A very disappointed expression on his face as he looked at Yotta. “Yotta, explain.”

“I… she…” he fumbled for words, unable to find what he was searching for.

“It wasn’t him!” a small, squeaky voice came from the center of the group of students. The tiniest child pushed his way to the front of the group followed by an equally small Machop. “He saved us.” At this, the rest of the group began to chime in with explanations and agreements, that were only lost in the mass of voices.

“Silence!” Brutus’ voice boomed. It seemed to quiet even the birds and wind outside. “Now, please, little one, tell me what happened.”

The tiny child recounted the whole incident while everyone else listened intently; everyone, but Nix. She knew she’d been had. She used the opportunity to sneak out of the room and run off, completely out of the dojo. When the child was done, Yotta turned to face Nix, only to find her gone.

“Where-?!”

“She left,” Brutus spoke without looking at Yotta. “I am sad that I could not save her, but it would seem her jealousy has gotten the best of her.”

“Jealous? Of who?”

“You, Yotta.”

“Me?” at this Yotta was thoroughly confused. “But I’m nothing special.”

Brutus laughed at this, “My boy, how further you could be from the truth, I don’t know.”

Yotta stood still, trying to take it all in when the child from before and his Machop came running up to him and hugged his legs. “Thank you fer savin’ us.”

“You’re most welcome,” Yotta smiled, but silently wondered what would become of Nix.
