Red was silent for a few moments, her story and the fact that she had shared it sinking in. He hadn't even shared a real story, just that he loved his plants. He glanced to the sky, trying to see the impression of the stars through the sunny sky.

"The night sky full of stars is one of the most beautiful things I have seen," he agreed. "The sky is always full of wonders."

"When I was little...," he began, deciding to share one of his stories in return, "I found an injured songbird lying almost dead in the woods. I could hardly see its colors through the blood. I took it to a stream to wash it off, and put some herbs on it that my mom said were healing herbs. After I washed the blood off, I realized it was one of the most beautiful songbirds I'd ever seen. I took care of that bird until it was completely healed, and watching it fly off is one of the best memories I have." He paused, a realization dawning on him. "I suppose that's when I started to love taking care of things. It's why I love my plants so much, they depend on me, taking care of them brings me joy. Just like that songbird."

Suddenly, he was embarrassed, sharing such deep thoughts. He fell silent, hoping Only Dreaming wouldn't think he was silly.

Having offered him a chance of insight into her life, Only Dreaming had felt it necessary to at least make it something meaningful. She continued to wind her way through the swamp, following a precise path she remembered from the last time she had come this way.

The doe listened and was silent for a long time after Red had finished speaking. By that time they had reached a sprawling berry bush that had taken over a wide space of a small rise of ground and looked intent on continuing its march.

After plucking one of the berries into her mouth with her tongue, she turned to regard him. “Surely even if the bird was as drab as mud you would still have considered it beautiful, because you saved it.” She smiled at him warmly. “That is a nice story.”

She ate another berry, taking time to savour the taste.

“You have a kind heart.”

She had made a good choice. Only Dreaming shifted a bit closer, flicking her tail at him invitingly.

Red stared into the bush she had brought him to, her statement filling his chest with the most amazing feeling, just like a hot liquid on a cold night.

"You're right, it would be beautiful no matter what."

He took her compliment, not selfishly, but he was happy that she had seen that quality in him. It was the quality he most wanted to have, and for her to praise him with that quality made him very content with himself.

He slowly reached forward to nibble off a berry for himself, following her lead and chewing slowly, but not really tasting it, the breeze from her tail hitting his flank was very distracting.

Suddenly he reached out and grabbed a berry with his teeth, being very careful with it, and held it out to Only Dreaming, hopefully for her to take it.

The doe leant forward when the berry was offered, her nose bumping against his and her tongue carefully curling around to grab and draw it back into her own mouth. Her eyes twinkled with mirth as she dipped her head slightly in thanks.

Time for the main event. The walk had been a good starter and she had intended on dragging it out further, but the male was more charming than anticipated. He deserved what he wanted.

“Red-like-fire…” She spoke his name softly and nuzzled his cheek.

Red's mind was a peaceful blank. He opened an eye and peered at the beautiful doe laying close to him. He nuzzled his nose closer to hers, unable to hold onto consciousness.

The last thought he had was of future babies, how they were beautiful like their mother.

Only Dreaming had not fallen asleep. She had waited until Red’s breathing had become deep and regular. Then she shifted gently and rose. The restlessness that had been within her body had gone. Now she was satisfied.

The doe stared down at him. He was a kind buck and she had grown fond of him in their short time together. However he deserved somebody who would love him deeply and always stand by his side. She could not be that Kimeti. Her desire for companionship had been filled and she would prefer to be alone for many months to come. If their union brought her young, she would care for the sacs tenderly and once foals she would let them go their own way. It was how it should be.

Without a sound, Only Dreaming slipped away into the night.

The bright sun shone through his eyelids, waking Red. He opened his eyes a crack and stretched, briefly forgetting where he was.

Then he remembered, and he realized his hooves should have bumped into Only Dreaming. His eyes flew open and he looked everywhere around him.

She was gone.

His heart fell and his ears drooped, but he hadn't been expecting her to stay forever anyway. Not that he had been expecting her to leave so soon, or so suddenly. He had caught a small glimpse of who she was, though, and this didn't really surprise him. She seemed like someone who only needed her own company.

He only hoped that he would one day see his children, if she had them.

He sighed and looked to the sky, a smile spreading across his face. This would be one memorable trip, he thought to himself, and if the new drink his friend had promised was as good as she insisted, then that would make it all the better. His thoughts returned to his excitement and recipes, but Only Dreaming would stay at the back of his mind for quite some time.
