Canoake had been keeping an eye for days so was no more surprised than the eggs themselves when they started to hatch. Though truly a pitiful clutch, the eggs themselves were the main reason to stand. And there was no way that Canoake was going to miss any chance to Impress. After all, the high spirited girl could only be so self absorbed when it came to another life.

The bellow, along with shouts, gave clue as Canoake shrugged into her white shift. She was sure that her family would be there. Another turn or so and her siblings would be standing as well. Moving forward, she spotted that Silly girl and K'la's son Kadayon. She gave a small grin and stood just as tall and as proud as if she were the Weyrwoman herself. Who almost seemed to be doing neither. Another pity.

With one green on the sands strangely digging away, Canoake noticed another green hatching and moving about towards the girls. Really? What was it with that strange creature? It wasn't like there was going to be a gold egg buried in the sands, no matter how much any one wanted it. Biting her tongue, she moved so that she was noticable but not upfront. No point in getting mauled.

The paler green had reached the boys now and was moving among them, nosing a few then turning away. She was neither large nor small for a hatchling green but she seemed rather reserved in the way she picked through him, working her way to the back of the ranks before mewling. Her was here, she could sense him! She just had to find him...

There! Wait....

She turned then, something having caught her attention. With patience she started towards that flicker of hope. And there, again, admist the boys!

Aha! She spotted him and then the crowds shifted and obscured the boy that was Hers once more. Huffing, she sat down stared in his general direction, Oh Talisanmine, won't you tell your Danath where you are? She keeps losing you.

Meanwhile, the green who had been digging finally seemed satisfied with her efforts and plunked her dragon butt into the whole with a proud expression, lounging in the Sand as if that was all she needed in the world.

Behind, the other eggs began stirring.

Tia had to stifle a laugh, covering her mouth with the cord of her braid and pretending to chew on it as the digging dragon curled up and sat proudly in her hole.

It was hard to tell if the little greens had found their partners, since both of them had sat down and looked like they might just be staying there, waiting for... well... whatever little dragons waited for. Food she guessed.

Anyway it was an very amusing image.

"Huh?" Winderick glanced up, surprised to see Kadayon standing beside him. Normally he wouldn't take kindly to unwanted criticism. However, he was too distracted by the green to think about it. After he straightened his posture he furrowed his brow. Realizing what happened he opened his mouth, about to tell Kadayon to keep his smart comments to himself, but he thought better of it. Getting angry probably wouldn't attract a dragon either. He only couldn't stop himself from giving Kadayon a dirty look.

Fortunately for Kadayon the green distracted Winderick before he could lose his temper. She nosed him once and pushed past him to the back of the group. When she started to move again he felt some flicker of hope. Finally she settled in front of some other boy and Winderick's hopes fell. Unable to hide his disappointment, he sighed lightly and glanced back onto the Sands. No new eggs had hatched yet. That other green seemed quite content in her hole. Curious, Winderick turned back and studied the boy who had just become a rider. He wondered how he would react.

Bronze and green wings slashed the air in front of Galeia as she sprinted down the halls. Tide and Dew, the two flits she’d Impressed, were still only a few days old, but they screeched and dipped in the air expertly around her leggy strides. Her Candidate robes whirled around her in a flurry as she pulled the cloth over her head. Dew screamed an unholy note and Galiea, blinded by a wide swath of white, sidestepped left as she ran. An oath followed her from behind, from the person she’d nearly crashed into.
”Out of the way!”[ she cried in a strong, carrying voice that cleared the path ahead of her as well.

Not a minute later she burst onto the sands, just barely on time. Her firelizards burst through the entrance as well, but only by their noses before realizing their error at the sight of the huge queen. The two popped Between in terror and Galeia dashed unceremoniously to the end of the girl’s line, nearly crashing into Sileny. Her eyes were wild and her hair tangled, but she was on time, and here gaze was already locked on the green.

--------------------------------------------------------------

K’la crossed the benches late late, but with considerably more grace than the latest girl Candidate. The clutch looked depressingly scant after her little visit to Trine some weeks ago. Of course, that had been a double hatching, but her face was vaguely worried as she looked from the clutch to the line of Candidates. Her son was out there. She had been playing with the hem of her fine blue-tinted riding clothes she’d arrived in, and by the time she found a forward bench that some acquaintance rider granted her, she’d wrinkled it rather badly. She sat, smoothing the sleeve while scolding herself.

And Canoake too. She wanted them both to Impress so badly. She gave a long, aching sigh and fiddled worriedly with her curls.

Yvoth, of course, was ecstatic with the idea of hatching. She’d lodged herself along a ledge, eyes whirling giddily and humming as loudly as her throat would allow. She had no worry over the clutch side. The green was simply thrilled at the idea of babies!. It will be okay, Mine. Look, the green Impressed! She creeled eagerly and squirmed on her perch before redoubling her efforts to tune the new dragons out of their shells.

B'tar edged his way into the stands a little behind the late K'la, ducking, nodding, and making polite comments to excuse himself as he worked his way toward a place, hoping to be somewhere close to his fellow green rider, if only for pleasant conversation from someone who also could appreciate the value of a green. S'raid was all very well and good, but he had barely any appreciation for greens.

That's because he and his are a pair of bronzes with their heads in the...

Don't finish that thought, Pri... please... B'tar cajoled, a forced smile fixing itself on his face as though he were concerned that everyone could hear Primath being opinionated... again. Not that her attitude was a massive secret in the Weyr, but it wasn't something he cared to deal with when late to watch the Hatching. Primath had all but dragged him physically away from what he was doing, but he'd really only needed a couple more minutes...

It wasn't like -he- was going to impress today, the candidates didn't really need him in the audience it was just a formality...

I'm so lucky you weren't late to my hatching, my distracted-one Primath sighed, finding her own perch and hunching her shoulders, as though ready to fend off anyone who might challenge her space, humming brightly for all her grumbles.

Eliaza blinked a few times, then laughed quietly as the first dragonet plonked her backside into the sand and seemed content to wait. It must have seemed chilly, coming out of her shell and into the air, no matter the fact that the heat in here had gone a great way toward drying Eliaza's curls already.

She turned her attention to the other green, the one giving the boys a thorough snuffling. When that one sat too, Eliaza stole glances at the girls around her. What did that mean? Had the little dragon found her rider? Surely one of the boys would say something if she'd chosen him, wouldn't they?

She'd spotted Hers nearly as soon as she'd walked out to greet the female Candidates so she was taking her time now. But... really, after a moment or two... she whuffed and arched her head high, even if she stayed well settled in her neatly dug hole.
Eliazamine, won’t you come sit with your Halifanth?

Thumping her tail against the ground, the green bugled her greeting as her gaze came to settle on Hers. Was she going to come?

That curious look, however, was disrupted as the Green Eel egg burst open and a pretty green tumbled out, shaking her head clear of goo as she mantled her wings and rose up on her hind legs, surveying the scene as if she owned the whole thing. Her eyes whirled orange when she caught sight of her sister and she snapped at the spotty dragonet before rumbling her irritation and moving to circle the eggs, apparently ignoring the candidates all together.

The second green was on her way to meet Her's when the wherhandler Lukah appeared under the archway with Zhac in tow. He stopped and gestured to the green with a huge smile. "Look!" he whispered.

He could hardly believe his good luck, an Impression was happening right in front of his eyes. How magical! He wished he could take that girl's place for just one second to experience the joining of two minds. His bond with Lukask was strong, but it could never be as strong as the bond between dragon and rider. No matter how much he enjoyed his job he always longed to experience that feeling. Alas, none of the Search Rider's dragons ever showed any interest in him. He stood up on his toes to see over the crowd, eager to see the lucky young girl meet her dragon for the first time. In spite of all his travels he had never been fortunate enough to witness a hatching. He wouldn't miss this for the world.

Those should be your eggs on the Sands, Galvanth, S'raid informed his Bronze, staring out with an almost bored expression over the paltry offerings of Benden's latest clutch. He was entirely unimpressed... though it was possible that some good would come of this new batch. Possible, but not probable. At the very least, it gave him a standard to beat. If they were mine, there would not be so few of them, Galvanth shot back, his attention firmly on the eggs themselves. Inside were good, Benden dragonets, just waiting to be hatched. If S'raid could not see that, that was his problem.

The Bronzerider's mind wandered back to Trine, and the triumphant Hatching he had witnessed there, a double hatching. Such things were unheard of at Benden. He had been quite interested to see what would come of it, and, after the tragic loss of the Crimson, it had been rather intriguing to note the proprietary behavior of the Queen toward eggs that were not her own. Was that... usual? Perhaps her mothering instincts had been kicked up into high gear because of her own clutch. Hmmn. It was worth pondering.

They hatch! Galvanth bugled, wrenching S'raid's attention with immediacy to the Sands. Two little Greens. Well, that was not as good as the Bronze that Trine had rated. How entirely... disappointing. He quirked an eyebrow as the tiny dragonets. How pitiful. And yet, they were good, Benden Greens. Perhaps there was some worth to be found in them-- after all, they were certainly useful enough, in their way. Hatchlings are hatchlings his dragon told him stubbornly, and he suppressed an amused snort.

Galvanth would think that. And that is where you would be wrong, old friend. Dragonets were not all created equal. The course of their existences was determined the moment they stepped out onto the sand, in the glimmering hue of their very hides. Heedless of S'raid's scorn, Galvanth hummed at the newly hatched Greens, encouraging them as they made their baby way into the world, and went to find their riders. You are feeling very cynical, S'raid, the hulking Bronze tossed in S'raid's direction, and the rider had to work to forestall a bark of laughter.

Cynical. As though being concerned with the color of the dragonets were cynical! Ah, but no. Having a laugh at my expense? he inquired, but did as he was bade, and observed the hatchlings. If he was not mistaken-- and he very likely was not, the very first Impression had been made. ... No, he was right. Those were Yvoth's tones that he heard, and if it was Yvoth, it was very likely indeed. If only S'raid had been aware of B'tar's thoughts, he would have agreed that he did have very little use for Greens. Certainly not in their babyhood.

When the second Green Impressed, Galvanth rumbled, delighted that all was as it should be. No dragonets between, so far. All to the good. And then, to S'raid's disgust, yet another Green had hatched! Bah! This was almost not worth his time. But he would not look away, not yet. How unfortunately predictable. The glance that he cast in the Weyrleader's direction was anything but supportive. Was this all Benden had to show for the change in leadership? It should have been your clutch, S'raid insisted, and this time the Bronze made no protest, but sent back faint amusement at his rather disgruntled rider.

"Oh. Oh." Eliaza moved without even thinking. She was only half aware, maybe less than that, of the girls she nudged aside as she stepped forward. She didn't knock anyone over, didn't put anyone in harm's way, but she had to be out there, in the sand, next to Halifanth. "Of course I'm coming," she murmured on a laugh, heedless of the tears that streaked her cheeks.

She knelt by the burrowing green for a moment, caught her nose between her hands and rested her forehead against the knobby head. Just for a moment. Just long enough to get her breath.

And then she remembered that there were other eggs hatching and other dragonets that probably wouldn't like finding them in the way. She climbed to her feet, dusted sand of her knees, and said, "Come on now, love. We should move to make way for the others. Come on. We'll have food and oil and oh, come with me, silly girl."

Well. Sileny wasn't sure whether she was annoyed that the other vintner girl had gotten the first dragon to hatch or if she should jut be pleased for the hall for producing her. She had been studying both of the hatchlings critically and come to the conclusion that the one which dug, the one from the oddly giddy egg, probably had something wrong with her. Digging like that just didn't seem to indicate mental health. And both eggs seemed to have produced lazy dragons who wanted their humans to do all the work. Oh, she understood that baby dragons needed a great deal of caring for, but she remembered that they weren't always so unwilling to do a bit of legwork to find their rider. The clutch seemed unimpressive, Sileny thought. Small in size, lots of greens, and nothing spectacular. Though the spots were quite attractive, in all fairness.

Aislin had barely had time to pull her white robes over her head before the hands of authority were shoving her onto the sands, packed in close with dozens of other white-robed hopefuls. It was a familiar procedure by now, but one which still came with a pounding head and a racing pulse. The excitement was almost nauseating in it's intensity, and Aislin found herself swaying slightly as she took her place once more upon the sands. Shoulder to shoulder with the other girls, Aislin twisted the fabric of her robes in her hands and watched, lost in a sea of eager faces.

The clutch had been a disappointment to much of Benden, common folk and Weyr leadership alike. Holding themselves in high regard as one of the “pure” Weyrs, nearly all of Benden had been hopeful that the clutch might have finally brought an end to their streak of bad luck. Or, at the very least, given them some small fragment of hope. What they had received was a small clutch of mostly tiny eggs, adding insult to the stinging injury that was first Malvren and then Trine's successes. Two new queens. Two unnatural Weyrs. It was a slap in the face for the proud Old Weyr.

'This will be your last chance, kitten,' S'raid had reminded the twenty-one turn old Candidate as she had pinned up her hair the previous day, offering no kind softening of the meaning behind those words, 'What are you going to do if you don't Impress?'

The question, dismissed at the time with a glare and a skillfully executed storm-out, now ate at her. As the first green Impressed, followed swiftly by her sister, the gnawing grew stronger. The days of girlish goldrider dreaming were long gone, crushed first by Benden's curse and then by her own increasing age. She was nearly ineligible; this clutch would undoubtedly be her last.

It was S'raid's gaze she sought – and easily found – in the crowd of onlookers.

'Now or never,' she mouthed the words.

Already two dragons down and only seven left with another green on the sands. Canoake was not so stupid as to reject the possibility of Impressing a lesser color, it just meant changing her plans so that they reflected her new position. Either way, she stood with her arms crossed watching the joy and excitement on the faces of the two who had Impressed.

For a fleeting second, she felt truly sad and alone.

But insecurities got you nowhere and nothing. SO instead, Canoake looked around and saw K'la settling into a seat. She would come out to see if her son Impressed. A truly fine green rider, if Canoake did manage to find her dragon on the Sands, she planned on modeling herself in manners and actions to the green rider.

And there went a second one. K’la made a vaguely distressed sound and eyed Canoake and her dear Kadayon. It seemed the least their new over-enthused Weyrleader could have done was give them a worthy clutch rather than having swooped down on the queen so quickly.

She shook her head, and glanced up to see B’tar coming near. She blinked and summoned a winning smile despite her distress. Whenever he saw B’tar she usually thought of his dragon, Primath, one of Benden’s ‘less-whimsical’ greens. The thought of that unsettled dragon usually bothered her, put her off, but she needed the distraction. “B’tar, you should join me here,” she said, moving slightly as a signal for him to sit. Not knowing of hi intention to pass by, she presumed she was accosting him and tilted her head in a way she thought was endearing. It might have been a bit more effective if she had all her youth still about her. “I’ve hardly seen you since our little trip to Trine.”

------------------------------------------------------------------

Zhac yawned in Lukah’s wake. It was probably bad manners. The Hatching grounds were abuzz with excitement, but the to wher handler it was just a bright, hot, and overcrowded room. Well, he did understand the importance of a hatching of course, but Lukah had dragged him away from his ‘late night’ or rather, early morning search through the record room. Not for the herbs that had been setting people’s curiosity ablaze, but the wher’s breeding records. It was of more accordance of his work anyway.

“I see,” he said, splitting a slight smile as Lukah gaped at the green toddling across the sands. He wouldn’t have come had it not been for his friend’s excitement. “You should see how they eat when they hatch. Bigger than when our whers hatched.” He glanced over the Hatching grounds and was surprised to see that although only three eggs had hatched, it made up a large portion of the clutch. This was likely to be a miserably short hatching.
