How Will You Welcome In NaNo?
I will be staying up until Midnight and start crunching out words then.
I will be going to bed like usual and starting when I wake up on the 1st.
  Eh. Dunno. Whatever.

I'm pretty sure that you can work on something old, no re-writing or anything, but the word count you upload onto the site can only count those words that you've written since November 1st. So if you've already started your novel and start counting from, say, chapter 5, I'm pretty sure that's okay now. They used to be a bit more concerned about it, but now they've realised that a lot of people use NaNo just to get stuff finished.

Just curious, has anyone actually won NaNo here? (Yes, yes, we're all winners, I know, but you know what I mean.)

I did last year, which would've been my first :3
Couldn't really tie everything up in the 50k length so rather, I finished the goal but not quite the story. If that makes sense.

Sugar: Yeah, it certainly does come in handy!

I did 86k last year. I may do 150k this year or however many words it takes to get the novel done. 5k words a day. Not bad. After that I'm sure I'll tack the whole thing down 20k words...I hope. crying

Buuuut I've been editing all year and I'm pretty much done with the first novel. Editing....I hates it so.

To comment on the discussion, NaNo also works on the honor system. It's not like anyone could find out and actually penalize you if you worked on an old project or continued one.

Now, now, lets not (officially) promote cheating. XD Lol. Nah, I would probably try my best not to go against the rules. I'm so goody-two-shoes on the internetz.

Sugar - I wouldn't do it, just because I want to actually win. But it's a silly writing contest. I wouldn't find my panties in a bunch if somebody said they bent the rules.

Erm, I mean, cheat! It's the only way you'll win, suckers! xD [/promote]

Lolz. Ah, I have to finish my outline before I can even consider actually writing 50k in a month. I think if I get my outline done though, it might be possible. I could probably pump out a couple thousand words a day if I REALLY tried to.
PostPosted: Wed Oct 06, 2010 7:39 pm

You could definitely pump out a few thousand words a day. Once you get into the groove of it, it gets easier. Sometimes it's making the push to get going that's hard.

I'm trapped doing mostly weekend work. I'm shooting for about 15k on the weekends, because my weekdays are so crushed for time.

Maybe I should do an outline. Maybe that would be smart. Actually, no. I'm not sure it would be with me for NaNo. My NaNos will stall and die if I don't keep the plot moving at a decent pace. Sometimes I get stuck on a scene. During NaNo, I either cut straight through to where I intend to go without the middle stuff, or I create a new, more interesting rout. Trying to outline it all would put me in a position to get stuck fast.

It makes me worried. I'm basically going in without a map. Yes, this is my normal style, but it still worries me every time I have to pull through a NaNo.

Now I'm ranting. Sorry.

Luckily we all rant here, so you fit right in.

I was pumping out that word count about a year ago, but I've gotten so crazy busy since, I just haven't been able to recently. Also, for some reason I write best at the butt-crack of dawn (not dusk), so I'll get most of my writing done between 5:30am and 7:00am, when it starts getting light out. The problem is, no way can I wake up at 5:30 every morning. I do it three times a week and that about exhausts me.

I never start out with an outline, I generally start out with a specific scene that has been in my head and I need to get out. From that scene everything kind of flows from it. Sometimes I'll write another scene or sometimes I'll get right down to creating a (basic) outline for it. From my outline I'll write more, then I'll get stuck and have to expand my outline in order to continue. Rinse and repeat. My outlines are kind of a living, breathing, growing, annoying child.

Right now I'm going through my third set of outline expansion. The ending was so vague, however, that it's slowing my progress down a bit. O.O I only have one week left for my goal to complete it.

Finally, the plot is willing. I'm planning to set up a thread for my NaNo this November in the original book area, will I see anyone else put their NaNos in there?

I might do NaNo this year, still deciding. Well, it will depend if I find a job. If I get a full time job that's all crazy and busy with tons of stuff to learn, I probably won't. But if things keep going as they have been, I should do something with my free time to keep me off WoW.

50% off the upcoming PC version of Scrivener if you reach 50k isn't too bad. ninja

I'm definitely doing it this year, and I will get it done, damnit.

*Always got massive writers block during November every other time attempted*

There are methods to push through writer's block during NaNo. None of them are pretty, and none of them benefit your plot, but there are ways. Usually I only employ them during NaNo, all other times letting blocks resolve themselves naturally, but during NaNo it's important to have contingency plans.
