Orphie TtheHero Hashire Kazemeijin Weasel-chan I'm feeling dumb for asking, but what is TVTropes? Here's the main site. Don't mind Reg. He just hates things. It's an awesome place.
This.
Also, it's very useful for when you're trying to do things like weave a story of your own; you can look at what makes each scenario work and what to try and avoid, such as making a character a Mary Sue, or Boring and Invincible.**
Just try not to stuff them in carefree abandon though, no good will come of that. It's not really useful at all. You can't write a good story if you're trying to achieve some stereotyped character or story.
Feh, if you say so...

Feh, if you say so... No, really. That is probably the worst way to write a story. Ever.

So I take it you have better sage advice to impart to me for my story, then? I'm already delving into alternate ways to say 'said'.

I'm just saying that you're probably going about it the wrong way if you're trying to fit a character into specific cookie-cutter molds.

Well, I can't say I'm TRYING to tailor my characters to any tropes. Moreso, if I see a certain one, I then think back on my story and then it's like, "Huh, so they do that. Interesting."
For instance, my character T; he has a move where he spins into an enemy, this was something I've established long before that site was probably ever conceived. Then one day I then see the entry, "Spin Attack"*. In a sense, it applies to him, because of that move. And I can't just change it to something else because of that.
And another example I've found that applies to him, Drop the Hammer*, because of the very hammer he wields.
And I won't even go into how the Elemental Powers entry apply to the protagonists as a whole.

I never knew about tropes for character writing. I mean, now that I know, I'd probably just use it as a basis, but not something to follow completely. Maybe to make sure what I'm doing isn't just narmy.

Orphie It's not really useful at all. You can't write a good story if you're trying to achieve some stereotyped character or story. I've heard people say that everything has already been thought of. I look at TVTropes, and I can believe it. What astounds me is when writers are genius enough to find new ways to combine or refute them. A good writer may be able to look at TVTropes and say "My character falls into this, but I don't want them to completely be that way, so I'm going to try also making them this and this." A good writer can use it a a reference point to make sure their world isn't a straight example of a trope, to avoid boringness via "we've seen it all before." A good writer can look at all that's been done before and try to make something original from it. Of course, a good author doesn't need it all. But an aspiring amateur might find it very, very useful.

The thing is, refusing to adhere to stereotypes has been done so often that it, too, is now a stereotype. The most original thing you can do is be completely ignorant of them and let your mind create what it creates. If it's been done before, oh well, at least you didn't let that limit you.

I think that's what I was trying to get at, but I couldn't really get that across very well.
