It took a moment for the meaning of the words to sink in, but once they did, Ari, spectacularly, managed to choke on air in surprise.

He was a giant mass of tangled and confused emotions: surprise, confusion, hope, shock, guilt, more emotions than he could possibly put a name to.

"I see er that is I mean she is," and Ari had to quite literally bite his tongue to stop even more words from spilling out in a jumbled mess like that.

Ari told himself quite firmly that he was not going to stare at Lumos, even now (or was that especially now?) that he knew he was a possibility.

And Ari had always been terrible at listening to himself, as he found himself staring anyway.

Lumos blinked at Ari's...well, was that a reaction to Lumos being gay? He wasn't sure, but still, what could have choked the other male up so badly...Once again, he forced himself not to think that Ari was interested.

"Maybe she'll find herself a mate one day, then."

Lumos felt eyes on him, and he turned his blue eyes onto the Elder. Sure enough, Ari's gaze wasn't exactly...entirely innocent.

"You know, we've both been doing this for awhile now," he remarked easily, clearly referring to staring when the other wasn't looking. Only now Ari had been caught and Lumos had willingly turned himself in.

So what happened now?

Ari was going to respond to the thing about Thea--nice neutral conversational topic there--but then Lumos went and kept on talking and pointed out the fact that the 'phim had been staring, too.

Ari, king of obliviousness that he was, hadn't even noticed until just then.

So. What did happen then?

What should happen, part of Ari said, was that he should say something that amounted to 'thanks, but no thanks' and then pretend like the whole thing had never happened. He hardly even knew Lumos. This was too fast.

And part of him was remembering another fox whom he had barely known, where things had also moved quickly, and...well, what had happened there was history.

He had been alone for so long.

What was just a bit more?

If he was alone for even a second more, he was going to explode.

The sentiments were complete opposites, and yet Ari wasn't sure which one actually applied to him.

Everything was just a giant jumbled confused mess in his mind. The only two clear points were that he wanted Lumos. And that he shouldn't want him. Not this soon.

That was it. Ari was very definitely going to explode.

"So, what do you plan to do about it?" Ari finally asked. There, the ball was in Lumos' court now. Let him deal with this for a bit.

Lumos stayed quiet while Ari did. Unlike Ari, Lumos knew what he wanted--and he had the sneaking feeling he was going to get it.

But he could wait, if need be. Maybe not for long, but if Ari wanted to pretend he didn't want this too...let him try to live in the denial.

The silence kept looming, and Lumos shifted his wings into a more comfortable position. The Elder was clearly having a mental debate with himself, so Lumos let the other stew in his own juices.

Finally, Ari spoke up again. Lumos glanced over at him and smirked lightly. "Mm..." The Modiphim pretended to think for awhile, keeping the other male on his toes.

Eventually Lumos gracefully stood back up to his full height. "This." The winged male leaned over and nipped Ari's ear flirtatiously, then turned and sauntered down the hill, in the direction opposite of the tribe.

So, maybe he wasn't quite all that oblivious--Ari could see the invitation for what it was, for all the little experience he had with them--and it only took him a minute to decide that there couldn't be any harm in just following Lumos to wherever he was going.

Obviously away from the tribe, at any rate...

And then several things clicked in Ari's brain at once, and he stopped dead in his tracks for a moment, realizing exactly what 'this' was. Was going to be. Whichever.

And...?

And he was coming to realize that he minded less and less with each passing moment, as he started on again, following Lumos deeper into the woods.

((...timeskip? biggrin ))

Lumos lazily cracked open one eye as the sun began to give way to the darkness. It was still very early to be awake, and the Modiphim yawned hugely, then winced at how sore his muscles were. Why..

Oh.

He blushed, then looked over at the sleeping male next to him. Despite the red tint to his face, Lumos grinned as he remembered what had happened last night. Sure enough, he hadn't had to wait.

But Lumos also knew that there was a very good chance that Ari would eventually freeze up about what they'd done, since he had lost a mate within only the last year. And Lumos really hadn't been trying to take advantage of that--but what happened had happened.

Pulling his eyes away from Ari, Lumos glanced up at the sky; the sun had probably set an hour ago at most. Rather than wake up Ari, lumos yawned again and set his head on his paws, content to enjoy the silence and let his muscles recuperate while he watched the landscape around them.

Ari woke up slowly, with the comforting presence of a warm body besides him. It was so nice to be back to this, he found himself thinking, until he realized that something seemed...off.

The fox next to him had wings.

Wasn't Kazuki.

He panicked for a second, until the memories of last night, and the explanation of who that fox was, and exactly why he was there came rushing back to him.

Ari felt his face turn red at those memories, but whether from pleasure, embarrassment, or shame, he couldn't quite say. He was definitely feeling all three right then.

Moon Fox above, he had missed this...

But he found himself missing Kazuki again, too.

And on top of all that, Lumos was still there, and he had no idea what to even start to say to him after all...that, so all he could come up with was the very bland: "Good night." And, a second later, not much better: "Did you sleep well?"

Because avoiding talking about what had happened was the natural thing to do.

Of course it was.
