Meh, backgrounds are a "dime a dozen"

Actually, they're not. Most backgrounds are bundled into MCs, evolving items, or other "premium" items, for which you have to pay real money or a LOT of gold on the MP. Definitely not a "dime a dozen". However, one could argue that since most avi art and siggy art is free, those are a "dime a dozen", intrinsically. xd Naturally, tho, I would factor in sentimental value and the beauty of the art itself, but those are subjective values and not quantifiable in terms of dimes or any other currency.

I don't care too much for backgrounds in items. There are just a few that I like to use from time to time...but overall they make most avatars seem way too cluttered.

Rini: I have to agree background can make an avi seem cluttered or out of place, but sometimes it gives that feel that you're going for too. I guess it just depends on if you can really get the look you're going for or not too. Though there are some backgrounds that yeah are just to...clutter feeling compared to others.
And I have to agree your siggy is really CUTE!!! 4laugh

Awww. Thank you -very- much guys for the compliment on my signature artwork. <3 My best friend does adorable artwork and she has a shop here on gaia. *inserts shameless plug here* surprised
.....Well, like your avatar (current) Moonracer, the background does not look bad at all. It goes along with the feel of the general avatar and does not clutter it. But, I have seen other avatars ...and created some of my own, where too much in the background seems to just cause the avatar to loose appeal.

Rini: Why thank you I do take my time to figure things out and tinker with things till I like it or it feels right. But I totally understand I've done the same as you tried some and they just seem way to cluttered and I've seen some that are just over the top with the background. I'm probably guilty of it myself. *shrugs* I guess whatever makes people happy. ^_^
