While I certainly don't deny the Baudilaire's chances of a happy ending are slim, to me that still just meant "in this book" not "in this series of 13 books"

the reason the other books didn't have happy endings was because then the series couldn't continue -- so we COULD get a happy ending, a sad ending or an ambiguous ending that leaves us wondering what happens. But I think because of what i heard in The Reptile room about hte Baudelaires looking back on the day count olaf arrived and wishing they'd done something differently. With that said, I don't think any of them will die.

One can only hope that one of the three of them won't die.. But my prediction is that at least one of the good minor characters will die. Like one of the triplets.. Not that I want them to, but something unpleasant is bound to happen.

My prediction: the Baudelaires and Olaf are heading to an island.

How do I know this? The notes in the Rare Edition make mention of an island where Female Finnish Pirates live and it is against the law to remove fruit from the trees. The Quagmires mention Olaf planning to take them to an island he uses as a hideout. And where else would Olaf go when he's on the run? They're going to some island, and I have a hunch they might run into the Incredibly Deadly Viper when they get there.

They'd better not die... crying

I will seriously cry if they die...I really, really will.

I think that Lemony Snicket'll explain everything that we're all confused about...and I think that maybe one of the Baudelaire parents will be found..or maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic about the 13th book having a happy ending...
I think like Charles...
^^

I agree, though I think we may be left with more questions than answers.
I hope that the baudelaires DO NOT join up with olaf it would just be too ...horrid exclaim

Many things will happen in the last book; that's the only thing that we can be really sure of.

I'd say it's pretty likely that while on the boat, Olaf will as usual, blab his mouth off and tell the Bauldelaires many things about himself or VFD. I doubt that all the mysteries are going to be solved though.

In case anyone's interested, I found this Handler quote on the internet.

"Happiness is a comparative term," he said, "so the ending you imagine is happier than some [possible endings], less happy than others."

I take it that this means that the children live. I don't think that them dying could be happier than other endings. I thought they lived before, but I thought this might support my claim a little better.

In book 13:

-I guessing either Olaf or Orphans will die
-Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler will become part of the story
-At least one of the orphans will die; my guess Violet will sacrifice herself for her siblings
-Poe will be revealed as a villian
-The two parts of VFD will have a final confrontation
-VFD will be destroyed
-the quagmires will die
-bauldilaire parent will be alive

that's about all I can guess

I like that quote! ^_^ Yeah I don't think the Baudelaires are going to die. I do hope some of the answers get revealed, but I for one don't want ALL of them answered. The clues are one of the things that intrigue me the most. A final showdown between the VFD would be cool as Oridaius said. It would be neat if Lemony showed up (again, for those who think he was the mysterious taxi driver in TPP). I would like to see what happens to Kit as well. I think the ending will be bittersweet. 3nodding

Olaf was actually a spy the hole time getting information on the bad schism and is actually The Baudelaires grandfather.

Whoa! That's one hell of an assumption! Although no theory can be proven wrong, I very strongly have to disagree. I don't believe that anyone on the good side of the schism would beat the children, try to force them into an incestuous marriage, kidnap their friends, or make them run laps for hours every night. Although I suppose that last one could be some part of VFD training, I doubt the others have anything to do with that. I could see maybe one of his henchmen being a spy though. After all, those two women split in TSS, maybe there are others who aren't really all that into the villain game...

No matter what type of research you're doing you don't put innocent people in a situation where they're going to die. If this was true Olaf wouldn't have murdered Dr. Montgomery & his assistant, allowed Josephine to die by leaches (although whether she died at all has come into question, i've notice on wiki), supposedly forced people to eat tacks or jump out of windows, be burned alive, allow them to get eaten by lions, or threaten with poisonous spores. I don't think Olaf is really old enough to be their grandfather.
